Summary: 2k12 side of 'AOtGO'. For months, Mikey was at the tender 'mercy' of the Kraang. Now he's been rescued but by the wrong family and must learn to fit in in a dimension not his own. All while searching for a way home for both himself and the missing member of his adopted family. 2k3/2k12 crossover.

ScribeofHeroes: Yeah, Leo... To be honest, I did carefully think about that and maybe he was being a little... more... but as you point out, there were episodes were he was strict and stuck on his own ideas of how things were meant to be and that's a huge part of what I was basing that on. That and he's worried and upset about his missing brother. More so than he often lets on. Mike isn't his brother, though he IS another version of his brother and he recognises and accepts that but the thought of anything happening to another Mikey is still just too much. Especially on his watch. If things had turned out better, he probably wouldn't have come down as hard but Mike was hurt and it scared him and though he didn't outright say it, he blames himself for letting Mike be topside in the first place when he knew full well he wasn't ready. When he's had some time to cool down and think, I'm sure things will be better. I'm sorry you felt it was too much though and no, I didn't even take that as criticism and didn't think of it as such until you said so don't worry. I am interested in seeing people's thoughts and opinions and they have caused me to think more about things a little more before and for the better so I do appreciate it. As for the conversation about the room, he wasn't trying to naysay it, he just didn't get how bad it could be until it was pointed out because he's had more important things on his mind.

Yeah, heh, there is no way Donnie wouldn't have told at least Splinter about Mikey's needs in regards to food. It's way too important not to.

To be honest, part of how the 2k3 family get their money for supplies was adopted from another story I read years ago and immediately became part of my own headcanon. I don't recall which story or author, however. On the other hand, Mikey using his art to supplement things is something I've been thinking of for years.

Thank you for your thoughts and comments :-)

AOtGO – Aftermath

Ch 27

Date: 12th Oct

A week had passed since he'd been injured and once again, the other three turtles had gone topside, leaving Mikey home alone, bored and antsy beyond reason so he'd headed into the now empty spare room and started painting. With Casey and April's help, it had taken the others all weekend and most of Monday to go through and move or get rid of everything. The items that belonged to the missing Michelangelo had been placed into a corner of his room so he could decide what he wanted and didn't want when he finally returned and then Tuesday and Wednesday had been spent cleaning and washing the walls in preparation for painting with the plan to start painting tomorrow after training. Meanwhile, the nights had been spent with the other turtles out searching for signs of Kraang activity in the hopes it might lead to a smaller, more easily breached base where Donnie could find a clue for finding their brother or getting him home. However, Monday night had been spent at the junkyard, looking for materials to make furniture from and Donnie had actually promised to let him come on the next trip there, provided he'd healed enough. Leonardo hadn't said anything but Mikey doubted he was happy about that.

By the time he had finished a single coat of paint on two walls, the fumes were beginning to get to him and his still tender body needed a break so he cleaned up and left the room, door wide open to allow it to air out. After grabbing a drink and a snack, he took to the pit, grimacing at the cardboard taste and texture of the plain rice cake he munched on. Hesitantly, he switched on the TV, unsure what to watch and settled down onto the bench, using the remote control to flip through the stations.

He chuckled through the antics of the crew of the 'Crimson Dwarf' for almost twenty minutes, then, when it finished, began flipping mindlessly through the stations again. Since nothing held his interest and the antsiness of being stuck inside began to attack him once more, he abandoned the TV and wandered over to the arcade games, taking up residence in front of the pinball for one sadly short game. Then he picked up the laptop to check his art site for anything new.

Having already uploaded something earlier that day, he didn't bother adding anything now so instead, he began browsing the groups he followed before sighing and switching off the computer, placing it carefully aside again.

He was bored, lonely and fed up and he needed to get out.

Mikey allowed his eyes to drift slowly around the lair where they lingered longingly on the turnstiles. Getting out, he realised, was the only thing that would curb this suffocating feeling that was taking over and the problem was that due to injury and that Leo didn't want him, he wasn't allowed out.

For a moment, he contemplated just leaving anyway because this was seriously ridiculous.

His brothers would have understood and so would his father. They all knew he had excess energy to expend and just how bad it was to keep him confined for too long at a time. There was a reason his punishments were never grounding him to the lair but instead involved taking away his video games and comics. His being confined drove everyone else just as up the wall as himself.

"You feel cooped up, don't you?"

This Raph understood and by the fact that Splinter never told them off for leaving that night, maybe he actually did too.

His gaze slid across the room to land on the steps to the dojo and he swallowed. He had nothing to lose by asking, other than the fact he wouldn't be able to just slip out and ask forgiveness later but neither did he want to worry anyone.

Mikey sighed again and steeling himself, made for the dojo.

There was no sign of the ninjutsu master within so he forced himself to cross the room and knock on the frame of the shoji screen separating Splinter's room from the dojo.

Moments later, the door slid open and the tall rat stepped out, a worried look in his eyes as he took in Michelangelo standing nervously before him.

"You wished to talk, my grandson?"

Mikey swallowed again and nodded. "Uh, yeah," he replied anxiously. "I need to get out for a bit before I go nuts," he admitted, trying not to cringe in dismay at the sight of Splinter's ears twitching unhappily.

"You are injured and not ready to go topside, Michelangelo," Splinter pointed out in a tired voice as if he'd had this argument many times before.

Was he seriously just dismissing him? In disbelief, Mikey straightened and jutted out his jaw obstinately. "I'm not asking to go topside. I just need to get out of the lair for a few hours and it's not a want, it's a need," he retorted, reeling from the instant brush-off. "I've never done well being cooped up all the time and the novelty of being in a new lair has worn off. Donnie cleared me for light exercise as long as I don't push myself too hard on Monday. I'm not badly hurt, like, nothing's broken, and, well, I figured I could borrow a skateboard and go explore the sewers for a few hours. I'll take my T-phone and keep away from humans and fights and I promise I'll take it easy."

"Michelangelo, I understand you are frustrated with your situation but this is not a good idea. I'm sorry but..."

"Sensei, I'm trying to live with your rules but I can't handle being stuck inside much longer," Mikey cut in, his hands flying out in frustration. "You don't understand! Back home, I could come and go as I liked within reason and I didn't need 'permission'."

"You are not in your world, however."

"I know and that's half the problem!" he exploded in exasperation. "I haven't had any real freedom in over nine months and I've had enough! They kept me trapped in a tiny cell almost all of that time. I couldn't even stretch out fully without touching the walls and when they did let me out, I was either tied down or worse, I was trapped in my own body while they controlled it like my body was some puppet on a string! like someone's damn toy! I'm free from there now but it still feels like I'm trapped, just in a bigger, nicer cage and I've only been let out twice now and only for a couple of hours each time and under someone else's supervision! Even criminals in human goals get time outside for fresh air! I need... I... I'm not asking for permission, Sensei. I'm a big turtle now and like I said, Donnie cleared me for light exercise so I'm going out tomorrow and if you don't like it, then... well, I guess you'll just have to lock me n a room or something because I need this!"

Splinter closed his eyes unhappily, looking sick. Then he opened them to look directly at him again. "Michelangelo, you do understand that I only have your well-being and safety in mind, don't you?"

Mikey nodded, unable to bring himself to speak again, hoping desperately that Splinter wouldn't try to talk him out of it or do as he suggested because he couldn't handle being locked up again. This was already bad enough.

"And this is what you truly believe you need?"

"Right now, more than you know," he replied softly, trying not to wilt with the admission.

Splinter sighed reluctantly. "You will keep your T-phone on you and turned on at all times."

"It'll be freshly charged," Mikey promised, hope finally rising within at the thought of getting out of this suffocating lair.

"If you do not return after two hours..."

Mikey stared suspiciously.

"... you will at least text Leonardo or Donatello so we know you are alright."

"That's fair enough," Mikey quickly agreed, nodding frantically in relief.

"Alright then," Splinter finally conceded. "I do not like this but you are technically an adult and I cannot keep you here, much as I wish you would stay until you recover. When do you plan to go?"

"After training tomorrow. I'll make lunch for everyone and then head out. I should be back by evening."

"Make sure you take a bottle of water with you."

"Already planned to," Mikey replied brightly with a relieved smile. He turned and began walking to the door, already feeling better for just having permission and a plan in place.

"And a snack!" Splinter called after him.

Mikey chuckled and waved acknowledgement before leaving the dojo.

-:-

The next day, as usual since the run-in with Rahzar and Fishface, Mikey did not join in during training, though he did come in for meditation and to watch and do his rehab. At the end of the session, as the other three cleaned up, he went to make toasted cheese sandwiches for everyone and pack the satchel he'd found with a couple of bottles of water and some snacks for the afternoon, practically vibrating with excitement.

Just knowing he'd be finally getting out for a while had improved his mood considerably but now it was getting close, anxiety began to rise. An anxiety, that while he couldn't quell it, he refused to let hold him back. He needed this far too much.

"Come and get it!" he bellowed cheerfully when he was ready, plates of food and glasses arrayed around the table.

As Donnie entered the kitchen, his gaze fell on the bag slung over Mikey's shoulder and he frowned uncertainly. "Are you going somewhere?"

Mikey nodded eagerly, "Yeah, I'm going skating," he grinned. "So~ can I borrow your board?"

Donnie groaned, "Aren't you supposed to ask before saying you're going and uh..." he glanced uncertainly behind him.

"You know you're not supposed to leave the lair before you recover," Leo said sternly, frowning at Mikey and Mikey bristled before letting it go and smiling instead.

"Actually, I talked to Sensei while you were all out last night. While he doesn't like the idea of me going out, he agreed." Mikey chose not to add that it was only because he would've just gone anyway and Splinter knew it.

"He did?" Leo asked in surprise. He turned to look behind him, seeing the ninjutsu master enter the kitchen. "You're letting Mike leave?"

"Michelangelo is not a prisoner here and he has every right to leave the lair for a time if that is what he needs," Splinter confirmed stiffly, obviously still unhappy about it but thankfully not backtracking on his agreement.

Mikey nodded again, his face saying 'See?' He turned back to Donnie. "So can I, Don?"

Donnie sighed and rubbed his face tiredly. "Skating doesn't sound like light exercise to me."

"I promise I'll take it easy. I won't go fast and I won't do any fancy tricks. I won't even jump across the streams. I just want to skate because it's relaxing and I'll get about faster."

"Alright, you can borrow my board then," Donnie agreed reluctantly with a deep sigh.

"Thanks, bro!" Mikey cheered. He dashed forward and threw his arms around the other turtle ecstatically in an octopus-tight hug.

"Hang on a moment! Are you going now? I thought we were painting your room this afternoon?" Donnie protested, attempting to push Mike off as he suddenly remembered.

Releasing him, Mikey stepped back sheepishly. "Yeah, sorry. I started it last night though so you guys can either pick up where I left off or leave it and I'll work on it again tonight while you're out," he shrugged. "It's up to you, no pressure either way, dude."

"Okay," Donnie replied reluctantly. "And what about your Kraang desensitisation session in the lab this afternoon?"

Mikey sighed, he hadn't even considered that. "Um... missing one day won't kill me."

"It might not kill you but missing it won't help and you've already missed a couple of sessions recently," Donnie pointed out tartly. "You had a much harder time returning the next day as a result."

"Well, if I get back in time before you guys leave, we could do it then?"

"And if not then, then definitely tonight after the rest of us get back from patrol," Donnie insisted, still frowning.

Right before bed? That would just open him to even more nightmares. Mikey tried not to shudder. He'd just have to try to be back on time then. He nodded reluctantly and turned to leave. "Well, I'll catch you later, guys."

"Can you at least give me a few minutes to eat lunch first?" Leo asked, giving the table a longing look. Mikey paused and looked at him in confusion.

"Dude, you can have all the time you want. Why ask me?"

"I thought you were leaving now."

"I am."

Leo frowned. "I don't think you should go alone so I'm coming with you."

"Leo," Mikey said exceedingly gently, "I don't need a chaperone. I want to get out for a few hours to do my own thing. I've got my T-phone and I'll be fine. If I need you guys I'll call or just come back early."

"Mike..."

"I'm a big turtle and I'll be fine dude," he said, repeating what he'd said to Splinter the night before.

Leonardo opened his mouth to argue but Raphael scowled.

"Just let him have some damned space before he cracks. If he needs us, he said he'll call!"

Mikey flashed Raph a grateful smile and took off before anyone could argue further.

-:-

For the next couple of hours, Mikey skated around without a specific destination in mind, just exploring and enjoying the fact that he was free to do as he pleased without someone hanging over his shoulder and watching him. A part of him longed to pick up speed and attempt a few easy jumps but the distinct twinge of his still-healing bruises and ribs reminded him of his promise and he kept to an easy speed that didn't push him too much.

After some time, he hit familiar territory and he gazed around in wonder. While some buildings topside were different from what he'd seen, most were the same, so why wouldn't it be that way down in the sewers too? Besides, the streets at least had the same layout so it only made sense that the tunnels and waterways of the damp, dank sewers would too and that made him wonder... did a version of his home or any of his previous homes exist in this world?

His heart began to beat faster in excitement at the thought and he took off again, this time with a destination in mind.

After all, there was only one way to find out and if he was going to be stuck in this world for some time, he definitely needed to know his way around.

-:-

"April!" Donnie perked up in delight upon seeing her enter his lab with a bright smile and obviously in a better mood than she'd been in for a while. Then his own mood instantly soured as he saw someone follow in behind her. "And Casey..."

"Nice to see you too, Donnie," Casey sneered, stepping in way too close to April's personal space and Donnie bit back a groan and his glare.

"Hi, Donnie! Is Mike around?" April asked, peering around the room and looking for him. "I didn't see him in the pit, kitchen or his room."

"He's gone out for a few hours. Skating."

April's gorgeous sky-blue gaze fixed on him in concern. "I didn't think he'd healed enough for that."

"He hasn't," Donnie replied flatly. If he'd had his way, Mike would've remained confined to the lair for at least another week, more likely two. Light exercises meant stretches and small weights, maybe easy kata in slow motion. Unfortunately, though, Splinter had been coerced into agreeing and had only done so because Mike had asked and if he'd said no, he would've taken off on his own without asking next time. He shrugged. "He did at least promise to take it easy and no tricks so... hopefully he won't make things much worse."

Suddenly, a movement in April's arms caught his attention and his eyes snapped down to see what appeared to be a mangy, undernourished animal in them. "Is that a cat?" he asked in surprise.

"And the zoology award goes to Donatello!" Casey cried with a shit-eating grin.

Donnie glared at him as April adjusted her grip and brought the little feline up in front of her face to coo briefly at it.

"Yeah, I found her abandoned in an ally. She had no tags or collar and looked hungry so I took her to a vet to get her checked out and to see if she was chipped. She was, by the way," April said, her voice hard with disgust. Donnie raised his eye ridge curiously. "The vet called her owner but apparently they moved out of the city into an apartment that didn't allow pets so they dumped the poor kitty."

Casey made a disgusted noise. "Some people don't deserve pets!" he said scathingly.

"No, they don't," Donnie agreed in a cold voice. He turned his attention back to the small cat. "So what are you going to do with her? Why didn't you leave her with the vet?"

April brought the cat to her chest again and for a moment, Donatello wished it were him in her arms. "Well, since the cat shelter is full and her chances of adoption are poor considering her health, I thought Mike might like to take her."

Donnie's jaw dropped in sheer disbelief. "Are you crazy? Master Splinter's a rat!"

"Yeah, what if that cat goes nuts and attacks him? She could feed off his body for months!" Casey cackled loudly.

"Not funny, Jones!"

"Actually, dude, it kinda is," Casey shot back with another laugh.

April shook her head wearily. "Why don't you go find Raph, Casey."

"And leave you all alone with him?" Casey asked, thumbing rudely towards Donnie.

Donnie and April both just looked at Casey and he laughed again before making a quick exit.

"I think she'd be good for Mike," April spoke up again once Casey left. "He obviously loves cats and..."

"Did he tell you that?" Donnie interrupted in surprise.

April shrugged. "Kind of. He used to have a cat that he found abandoned and he misses him badly. Mike showed me a couple of pictures he drew of Klunk and well... anyone who could draw like that obviously loves cats a lot."

"Or that one in particular," Donnie pointed out.

"Or that one in particular," April agreed. "Anyway, this little kitty needs a home and I think she'll be good for Mike. She isn't even two years old yet," she pointed out, the barest hint of a wobble to her lower lip.

Donnie sighed in dismay. "Emotional manipulation doesn't suit you, April." A small, knowing smile played her lips and Donnie groaned, defeated. "Have you spoken to Master Splinter yet?"

"No, I haven't," April laughed. "I figured if I convinced you first, you could help me convince him. You could explain how she'd be a good therapy animal for Mike and I'm sure he'll agree."

Donnie groaned again. "The last therapy animal we had in this home was Spike and look how that turned out." Spike hadn't been intended as a therapy pet but over the years, he'd become one as Raphael spewed out his vitriol and frustrations over his brothers to the little turtle and when Spike mutated, all that hate twisted his mind and he'd tried to kill them as a result.

And he'd very nearly succeeded.

"Mike isn't Raph. He's not the type to hate or unload hatred in the first place," April argued, shaking her head. "Besides, you're not going to let this little kitty get mutated, are you?" she asked with a sideways look at the mutagen Donnie had out on his bench.

Donnie coloured immediately. Spike mutating hadn't been his fault. It had been Raph's. "Of course not!" he spluttered in dismay.

"Then there's no problem!" April countered cheerfully. She looked about the room and then out the door. "So where should we put kitty until Mike comes back? I need to feed her and then we need to talk to Master Splinter."

Donnie thought for a moment, then pulled out a sheet of paper and a texta. "We'll put her in the bathroom for now," he said, writing as he spoke.

Beware of Cat.

Do not let her out.

"Did you bring down any litter and a tray?"

-:-

"Leo?" Mikey called loudly through the ether, reaching out with his mind and soul with everything he had. "Master Splinter?" But there was still no response and honestly, despite how hard he'd tried, he hadn't expected one. The eerie mist whirled and swirled around him, coalescing into a barrier between this world and the next. It was difficult to see it but not hard to feel it.

It had been a few weeks now since he was last in the Astral Plain and he felt further away from his family than ever before. Maybe it was because he now knew he was trapped in another reality and that knowledge and the fact he was no longer desperate for rescue affected his attempt or maybe it was because he actually was in another world and the barrier that kept the two dimensions apart made contact impossible.

But... then there was the Leonardo of this world. Twice now, he'd somehow, without even trying, managed to touch his missing brother's mind so that suggested it was possible after all.

Mikey bit his lip in frustration as he pulled his awareness back to his body and opening his eyes, gazed about mournfully.

Maybe there were special circumstances that allowed Leo to touch his brother's mind, like the fact that one was in danger or that it was their Mutation Day. A day when they felt closer than usual.

Maybe there had to be an effort from both sides in the exact same moment and if so... he looked anxiously at the time on his T-phone... now was definitely not the right time of day. Assuming both dimensions were in sync with each other, then his family would currently be training, making such contact impossible.

Or maybe... maybe despite the talent for manipulating the astral environment that his father insisted he had, he just wasn't good enough...

Mikey sighed miserably. There could be so many reasons he couldn't reach them and he'd never know. He wasn't a spiritualist like Leo and their father were and he wasn't a scientist like Donnie. He mostly operated on instinct and what he learnt by hanging around and watching Leo, Donnie and everyone else.

He stretched tiredly before carefully pushing himself to his feet, mindful of his still-healing ribs and looked around again. Coming across this place was a miracle in his opinion. His favourite of all the places he'd lived in despite the terror that sometimes visited and ultimately the destruction when Karai and her Foot had finally discovered and attacked them, destroying their home and place of safety.

This home had been so spacious and more open than any of the others and they had such good memories here. Their first friendships and expanding their family – April, Casey and Klunk. Hosting Christmas dinner with room for friends to visit from other dimensions. It had been the time they'd earnt their freedom and been allowed to just explore topside without either their father with them or for reasons other than pure survival – the gathering of supplies and such. In this home, they'd grown and learnt so much. About themselves and the world and even the universe around them and it had been amazing.

Ignoring the times the bad guys, Ultimate Drako, the Foot Mystics, Karai and her army, had invaded, they'd been happy here. They'd had a fresh start and more space to move than their previous home which he also felt nostalgia for, given that that was where he'd grown up, or their most recent.

The newest had been good too but it didn't hold the innocence of the Y'Lyntian lair. The newest home came with the terror of not only losing everything they owned but almost their lives and worse, each other.

It came with the terror of their desperate fight for survival and the loneliness and cold that followed.

It had taken months after Leonardo had returned from Japan and reunited them, but it had eventually grown on him as they worked to set it up into something livable and could be called home.

And he wanted so badly to be reunited again... If only Leo could pull off another miracle like the last time but there was no point wishing for another miracle when he'd already had more than his fair share of them. The latest of which was being found and saved at all.

Unwilling to continue thinking on that train of thought, Mikey reached down and scooped up his bag, slinging it over his shoulder again before making his way out, glancing at the time as he did.

Over three hours had passed since he'd left but he wasn't quite ready to go back yet.

He wanted to see if their water treatment home existed in this world too so he shot off another quick message to Donnie, saying he was fine and would be out for a while longer yet, then dropped the skateboard to the ground, hopped lightly aboard and took off again.

-:-

An hour later, he'd finally found the old water treatment plant but to his disappointment it was still in service, upgraded with a few workers pottering about and keeping an eye on things. Careful not to be seen by cameras he was sure were about, he stuck to the shadows and began to sneak away when something large skittered by further down the tunnel.

Catching his breath, Mikey froze, heart pounding as he stared fearfully where he'd seen the apparition but he saw nothing else and only heard the usual small squeaks and light tick of claws racing along pipes that he normally associated with rats. Still, he stayed put and kept watching for several minutes, wondering what he'd seen and somehow knowing it hadn't just been his wild imagination asserting itself despite how much he wished otherwise.

Finally, convinced by the normal sounds of sewer life continuing around him, he forced himself to straighten and begin heading back when his T-phone vibrated, making him jump in fright.

Gandalf: Sorry to cut things short but you need to come back now. There's trouble going on and I'll tell you about it when we get home. Just be careful on your way back and make sure you aren't followed.

Mikey frowned and his gaze drifted back to where he'd seen that... whatever it was. Somehow, he felt sure whatever he'd seen was tied to what Donnie referred to and for a moment, he was tempted to go see if he could find a trail to follow but then he remembered his promise not to get involved and sighed.

It wasn't like he really wanted to know what that thing was anyway. He'd had enough of monsters for one lifetime already, thank you very much.

Turtle Titan: I'm a long way off so it'll probably take an hour or so to get back but I'm on my way.

Donnie sent a thumbs-up emoji back and Mikey pocketed the phone once more, took a deep breath and resumed his way home.

-:-

He'd been skating faster than he should've for a little over half an hour when he noticed a sudden shaft of light appear from above. He immediately jumped from the skateboard, scooped it up and dashed up into the pipes just in time as a large, freaky something blotted out the light. Squeezing through the manhole, it landed below with a loud tick of claws and a thud and he stared in utter horror at the grotesque, twisted form before him.

It... was a rat.

The largest, most malformed and gross rat he'd ever seen. It had a face like something out of the nightmares he'd had after that run-in with the creep who controlled rats back in his world. They'd been playing ninja tag with Casey that day and during the game, he'd been captured and strung up as rat food in the old silo. He shuddered, remembering just how bad and terrifying that experience had been.

But at least those rats had been normal. Unlike the monstrosity before him now.

Something about it gave off the vibe of Bishop's mutagen monsters and he shuddered again as the creature readjusted itself and took off, loping easily down the tunnel to he didn't know where.

Suddenly, a terrified cry echoed loudly through the sewer, screaming for help and drawing his attention to a struggling human form held tightly in the slavering jaws of the ugly beast and without a thought, Mikey turned and raced after the creature, his expression hardening in determination.

He'd promised to stay out of any fights. He wasn't fit yet and was recently injured as his ribs and shoulder pointedly reminded him but he couldn't just stand by as that monster took an unwilling victim home for dinner.

A/N: Well, it's taken a while to get to this point, far longer than I envisioned, in fact, but finally, it's time for the cat that would-be Icecream Kitty to make her long-awaited debut! However, since this is AU, don't expect her to be the same as in the show. If this disappoints anyone, I'm sorry but circumstances are completely different so it wouldn't play out the same way.

Some dialogue quotes taken directly from the 2k12 S02E12 Of Rats and Men. I will not be rewriting the episode but as can be seen above, this and the next chapter are set during that episode and will be pretty much from 2k3 Mikey's PoV.

Comments, thoughts and concrit are always welcome.
