It is a rewritten cycle. The events are going differently. Eragon doesn't start out as a farm boy. A dragon does not hatch for him right away. This is, in my opinion, a more realistic version with a more involved Galbatorix that uses its abilities rather than just sitting in a castle. It is necessary to read the cycle. The ending of Inheritance(the fourth/the "last" book of Eragon Series) is a little bit meone thinks that Eragon and Arya should be together at the end of the story. Eragon didn't make the journey with only Brom and Saphira. He had Riley too, a tough spirited young woman. Follow her adventure with Eragon as she also reveals the secrets of her past. It follows the book closely and gives it a woman's touch.
