Calamitous Intervention
Chapter One - Prologue
A green-haired witch backflipped onto a cliff holding a staff, glaring up at a large, imposing figure. The figure was a huge purple snake with horns and yellow glowing eyes. "Foolish child! I could swallow you whole!" it yelled, before hissing at her.
"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake, for I am the Good Witch Azura, warrior of peace!" The witch replied, her hair blowing back and forth. She then immediately dropped to one knee, holding her staff like a rocket launcher. "Now eat this, sucka!"
The witch's staff glowed, launching blasts of fire that struck the snake and knocked it back, making it cry out. "NO! My only weakness! Dying!"
"And that's the end!" A fourteen-year-old Latina girl said, smiling innocently while holding a doll of Azura and a live snake. Her name is Luz Noceda. In front of her were her mother Camila and Principal Hal. She had gotten into trouble once again and, as a result, she ended up in the principal's office.
"The end of what?" Camila replied, not fully understanding the story her daughter had just told them.
"My book report," Luz said. "I think I knocked it out of the park."
"Your book report is why you're in here," the principal told her, pointing to the door, showing screaming students running by with snakes biting their heads. This was the result of one of Luz's experiments gone wrong.
"Oh, so that's where the backup snakes were," Luz said.
"And what were you going to do with this?" her mother asked, picking up a bundle of fireworks tied together with rope. She was concerned for her daughter's safety with dangerous equipment like that.
Luz frowned before muttering and looking down. "That was for the act three closer..."
"Mija," Camila stated, walking up to her, "I love your creativity, but it's gotten out of hand. Do you remember why you were in the principal's office the last three times?"
Two weeks ago, Luz was at an audition for Romeo and Juliet, holding a spork. "O happy dagger, give me death!" On the stage, she stabbed it into her chest before tearing the front of her outfit, making several sausages fall out. The other kids on the stage ran away screaming, ruining the scene.
At another point in time, Luz was attaching a pigeon head onto a squirrel's body, with the label "Baby Griffin" below it. "Now for the final anatomically correct touch: spider breath."
She opened the model's beak, and spiders flooded out, crawling all over her and the classroom. This caused a commotion, as everybody panicked and screamed. At another moment, she was a part of cheerleader tryouts and a student did a backflip, impressing almost everybody.
"You think that's an impressive trick?" Luz cut in. "Take a look at this."
She turned around, showing her eyelids inside out and squishing them. "Bleep bloop bleep!" In response, the other girls screamed at this and ran away from her, while others watched in disgust.
Camila continued, pulling something out of her purse. "We all love that you express yourself, but if you can't learn to separate fantasy from reality, you may need to spend the summer here." She handed Luz a pamphlet for Reality Check Summer Camp.
She took a look at it, frowning. She definitely wouldn't want to go there. She decided to reassure her mother. "Don't worry, Mom. I won't let you down!" She got up, raising her Azura figurine in the air. "No more weirdness!"
Suddenly, the live snake Luz was holding shot out of her hand and bit the principal, making him cry out. Luz winced, realizing how much she had just messed up. "That doesn't count, right?"
Anne Boonchuy, a thirteen-year-old Thai American girl, rode on her bike to school in California. She pulled up and parked her bike near the entrance, when an orange-haired girl wearing a hat walked up to her, grinning.
"Hey, Boobchuy!" Maggie greeted her mockingly. "Whatcha eatin'? A puke bun?"
Anne scowled at her, tired of her constant insults. "It's not a bun, Maggie. It's Khao Niew Bing, a traditional Thai snack made up of rice and coconut milk. My mom made it for me because… it's my birthday."
Maggie's smirk faded. "Oh, well, happy birthday." Suddenly, she reached out, attempting to yank the rice bun out of Anne's hand. "Give me that!"
"Hey! Get your own Thai mom!" Anne grunted as the two fought over the snack, yanking it back and forth.
"Hey, Margot!" a voice called out from the sidelines. The two of them looked over to see one of Anne's best friends, Sasha Waybright. Behind her, a teen with green glasses and a purple mohawk played a metal guitar solo.
"Leave her alone!" she demanded. "Also, nice guitar solo, Vince."
"Yeah!" Vince replied.
Anne looked at her, relieved to see her friend.
"Oh, yeah?" Maggie stated, pointing a finger at Sasha. "Or else what?"
"Or else you can forget coming to my awesome house party next week," Sasha said, walking up to her and crossing her arms. "It'll be really sad when the whole class is enjoying the pool without you."
Maggie frowned nervously. "Aw, jeez, Sash. I was just playin'. Here." She shoved the rice bun into Anne's hands, walking away. Anne smiled. "Thanks, dude."
"No worries," Sasha said. "You just gotta speak their language. But never mind that. Happy birthday, girl!"
The two girls squealed, dancing around in celebration, when suddenly the school bell rang and Sasha scoffed. "Buzzkill..."
Before Anne walked toward the entrance, Sasha placed a hand on her shoulder, having an idea. "You know what? Forget school. It's your birthday and we gotta make it count. Let's get out of here and celebrate in style."
Anne was unsure about completely skipping the school day. "Oof, skip school? I don't know, Sash-"
"Anne, this is your thirteenth birthday," Sasha insisted. "You only get one of these. So let's make it the best birthday in the history of birthdays."
The Thai girl thought about it for a moment. "Well... all right. I gotta be home by six o'clock, though. My parents are throwing a big party and they really want me to be there."
Sasha waved this off. "Right, right, you got it." She pulled out her phone, texting another one of their friends. "Let's get Marcy in on this too, before she goes all nerdy on us. Meanwhile, let's get this thing started!" They ran off on their way to do some shenanigans as they waited for their other friend to join them.
Marcy Wu decided to stop by the public library right before school started, as she had to return a book. She was in a hurry to get there on time. "I forgot to come here early and return this! I can't be late!"
She stumbled around, returning the book to the librarian. Before she left, she was about to say something but didn't pay attention to her surroundings, and consequently, she tripped on a cart. "Ouch!" A book fell out of it and she looked at the cover curiously. "Huh?"
She picked it up, reading the front. The book was titled, "Dr. P's Extraordinary Guide To Magic & Mystery".
Her curiosity took over, and she flipped through the pages quickly, finding some of them amusing, but she froze as she spotted a very unusual and interesting page. "Whoa! Calamity Box? Travel to other worlds?"
She thought about it before laughing at it. "Oh, goofy stuff. Cool artwork though." She picked up her phone and took a picture of it. She suddenly received text messages from Sasha saying: "Stop Studying ya nerd", "IT'S ANNE'S BDAY!", and "MEET US DOWNTOWN 🎂💃"
Marcy's eyes widened, now facing a dilemma. "Anne's birthday! But I can't skip school! My parents would kill me!"
She texted Sasha back but got the typical Sasha responses. "Dude Who cares? It's just one day," and "Youre already the top of the class. Come Join us now"
Marcy contemplated this, not wanting to get on her friend's bad side. She chuckled nervously. "Sure, what's one day gonna hurt?" She reluctantly put the book back and ran out of the library, heading to the nearby arcade.
She soon joined Anne and Sasha, and the three wound up having fun for hours straight. While Sasha was pushing Anne around in a cart, Marcy watched, laughing at their antics, but then received a voice message from her father.
She frowned and walked away while the other two were distracted, as she listened to it. Since her father was busy with work, he'd left a message for her earlier explaining everything. When it stopped, she teared up, trying to keep herself together.
Anne and Sasha came over, finding Marcy. Sasha placed a hand on her shoulder, shaking her. "Mar Mar, what are you looking at?"
Marcy didn't reply as she ran away in tears, leaving the two of them confused. "Marcy?!"
She cried, running through the streets. She didn't stop, just wanting to be alone. After a while, she panted and stopped in front of a thrift shop. She leaned on the window and looked through it, noticing something familiar on the shelf. "Huh... That's weird... Is that…?"
Marcy pulled out her phone, comparing it to the photo she took earlier. It was the Calamity Box, just sitting right there in the store. She zoomed into the picture, reading the words, "Travel to other worlds", and thinking of what the possibilities could be, she had a cunning idea.
She quickly got text messages from Anne and Sasha asking where she went and she smiled, texting back to them. "I think I just found the perfect birthday present for Anne." She sent a picture of the box to her friends. This is perfect!
Anne and Sasha walked through the streets, trying to find where Marcy went. Suddenly, Sasha got a text on her phone, and her eyes widened before she grinned. "So that's why she ran off."
She showed the picture to Anne. "She found the perfect gift for you. Ha! A frog music box for a frog lover." She rubbed her chin curiously. "I wonder if those gems are real. Come on, let's go."
Soon enough, the two met with Marcy and saw the music box in person. Sasha pressured Anne to steal it and she gave in, walking into the thrift store and stopping in front of the Calamity Box. She questioned her decision and heavily reconsidered her action, but she didn't want to upset Sasha and Marcy. "Alright, Anne, you can do this."
She reached over and grabbed it off the shelf before shoving it into her backpack and hurrying out of the store. "Alright, can we get out of here?"
Sasha rolled her eyes before she led them to the nearest alleyway. "Come on, let's check out your gift before we go back to partying." Before Anne could protest, she unzipped her backpack and pulled out the music box, handing it to her.
Anne shrugged and sat down, not expecting much from it. It was just a plain old music box, right?
Luz stood in front of her house, disappointed in herself. Behind her, Camila left the house and walked up to her, hugging her. "Oh! Oh, my baby! Now, don't worry. Summer camp is only going to be for three months. You'll be so busy balancing checkbooks and learning to... appreciate public radio, the time will fly by!"
"But I don't like any of that stuff," Luz protested. "I like editing anime clips to music and-and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories."
"Mija, your fantasy world is holding you back," her mother reminded her, wanting to do what was best for her. "Do you have any friends? Real ones, not imagined or drawn, or reptilian?"
Luz didn't respond as she knew the blunt truth, and walked over to the trash can. Her mother continued. "Summer camp is a chance to make some friends, but you have to try. Can you do that?"
"Yes, Mom," Luz replied dejectedly, placing her Good Witch Azura book into the trash. Camila's phone vibrated, and she picked it up, checking her messages. "Oh. I gotta go to work."
She walked up to her daughter and kissed her on the forehead. "Your bus is coming soon. Text me when you get there. Cuídate mucho, Mija. Qué te vaya bien." She walked off, leaving Luz alone.
"Bye, Mom," Luz muttered before she glanced to her right and noticed her book was gone. She gasped, digging through the trash frantically. "Where is it? Where is it?" She heard a hoot and looked up to see a tiny owl carrying a sack with her Azura book in it. It flew off, and she ran after it. "Tiny trash thief!"
She chased it and saw a small abandoned house. She paused, before hesitantly going forward.
Meanwhile, Anne Boonchuy opened the music box, and sparks of energy poured out, making them flinch. A bright light engulfed them, as a pillar of blue energy lit up the city, surprising many.
A wave of strange energy went through the city and the entire country. And as Luz was about to enter the portal door, it suddenly flickered unnaturally, disrupted by the Calamity energy from across the country.
"What the?!" Her eyes widened as the door cracked a little, with the portal turning blue for a split second. It pulled her in and she screamed, flying into it. "MOM!" A white light engulfed her as she opened her eyes in an unstable rift, seeing blurry figures of three different girls in front of her. A vortex of calamity energy consumed them, sending them flying in different directions.
After what felt like minutes, Luz opened her eyes in an unfamiliar place, hearing insects around her. She got up, seeing tall trees surrounding her with glowing mushrooms on the side. "Where am I?!"
She turned to see the portal door was gone. "Oh no! No, no, no!" She took her phone and tried to text Camila, but there was no service. "Not good!" She then noticed something laying on the ground next to her and picked it up. It was a strange music box. "Huh... Guess I'll take this with me..."
Anne opened her eyes, getting up in a strange tent. "Huh? Where did..." She looked around, seeing a lot of strange objects and junk. "What the heck is this stuff? ... Sasha? Marcy?"
"Finally, you're back," she heard a voice and flinched before approaching the source of it. "Hello?"
To Be Continued in Chapter Two
I hope you enjoyed the first chapter of Calamitous Intervention. This story is about what if Anne and Luz switched places right as they are isekai'd into their respective worlds.
You may notice some changes in this chapter, such as Sasha taking Anne out of school earlier, or Marcy discovering the Calamity Box earlier. I did this so these events would happen simultaneously and make as much sense as possible.
