Set on season 9
Donna arrived at her apartment late that night. Faye had left her a stack of files as overwhelming as her desire to shout a few things in her face, which she still doesn't understand how she managed to control herself from saying. She puts the keys on the front door of her apartment, simultaneously taking off her coat. When she opens the door, her smile widens at the sight of some lights on. As soon as she steps over the threshold, Harvey walks towards her, wearing gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt.
"What are you doing here?" she asks, looking at him while she removes her shoes with her own feet.
"I wanted to spend the night with you," he tells her in a deep voice that makes her tremble. She says nothing, just shortens the distance between them and wraps her arms around his waist, hiding her face in his neck. Immediately, she feels him wrapping his arms around her as well.
"Thank you," she murmurs.
"You don't have to thank me. I love spending time with you," he murmurs and gives her a heartfelt kiss on her temple.
"I know, but thank you for being here and waiting for me. It feels good to hug you after the day I've had."
He smiles against her skin and affectionately rubs her back with his hand. "You're here now. I've got you." She nods, sighs, and realizes she has been closing her eyes too tightly, so she tries to relax a little and let herself be overwhelmed by his presence for a few seconds. "Have you eaten anything?"
"Yes, at the office."
"Okay... So, do you think it's a good idea to go to bed?"
"I'll make tea first, but I can drink it in bed with you. I would offer you one, but I know you hate tea," she says.
He laughs. "Maybe a scotch would work for me."
"Yeah, that's more your style," she giggles playfully, and her laughter spreads to him. She pulls her head back slightly, and his gentle smile brings her a sense of calm. "I had a terrible day, and I know I don't look my best, but... could you give me a kiss?"
Harvey smiles even more and gives her a warm, tender kiss. "You always look the best," he murmurs in the middle of the kiss, making her smirk.
Just a few minutes later, Donna is in the kitchen, heating water to make herbal tea. As she goes to pour the water into her cup, some of it spills onto her hand. "Damn it!" she groans, her eyes welling up with tears, and she immediately turns on the cold water and puts her hand under it.
"What happened? Are you okay?" Harvey rushes to the kitchen as quickly as he can.
"Yes, I'm fine," she sobs without even looking at him.
Harvey approaches her and stands behind her, placing his warm hands on her shoulders and giving her a gentle squeeze. "Your hand?" he asks.
"Yeah, but it's okay. The water wasn't that hot. It's happened to me before," she responds, trying to hide her tears and looking down. She then turns off the water, drying her hand with a kitchen towel.
"Okay... Do you want to tell me what's wrong, then?" he asks gently, trying not to put too much pressure on her. Donna shakes her head, biting her lip. "Are you sure?" he murmurs, his fingers massaging her shoulders.
"I don't know," she sobs.
"Do you mean you don't know if you want to tell me, or you don't know what's happening to you?"
She sighs. "I feel like I can't handle everything, Harvey," she sobs again, tears flowing freely.
"What do you mean by 'everything'?" he asks, his hands still massaging her shoulders.
"The firm... specifically Faye, and constantly having to prove to her that I can handle everything when deep down, I'm not sure if I really can," she murmurs, closing her eyes tightly and shedding more tears.
Harvey lowers his hands down the sides of her body until he reaches her waist and gently turns her towards him. "It's okay if you can't handle everything, Donna," he tells her softly. One of his hands intertwines with hers, while the other rests on her collarbone, affectionately grasping the nape, his fingers tangling in her hair. "I know we all think you're a superhero, and sometimes even you believe it too." She nods and sniffles. "But you're not. You're human, an incredible human." She smiles through her tears. "But just a human, like all of us, and it's okay if you can't do everything..." He kisses her forehead, causing her to completely let go, her body falling into his embrace as he tenderly holds her. "And it's okay if you need to ask for help. I'm here now," he whispers in her ear, and Donna nods with a small smile on her lips.
"Thank you, Harvey," she says amidst tears. "And I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize," he reassures her.
She shrugs. "I had never cried in front of you like this, not since we've been together, and... I don't know."
"Oh, Donna..." he whispers in her ear. "I don't like seeing you cry, but I know it will happen sometimes, and I want to be there to give you a hug every time it does. Okay?"
She nods. "I guess that's also asking for help."
"It is," Harvey responds, gently swaying them from side to side while still holding her close. "I love you, Donna. And it's okay if you can't be a superhero all the time. You can take off your cape when you're with me."
Donna chuckles through her tears and wraps her arms around him as well. "I love you too, Harvey," she replies, giving him a kiss on his neck, while he kisses her forehead, and they hold each other even tighter. "I don't have a cape, but I do have a dress that I can't stand anymore."
Harvey doesn't say anything. He simply reaches for the zipper on her back and lowers it to her waist. "Go change into your pajamas. I'll finish making your tea and bring it to you."
She smiles and takes a step back to look at him. "You're definitely my superhero," she says with a shy smile.
Harvey smiles and wipes away her tears with his fingers. "And you're my superhero, Donna," he whispers, giving her a tender kiss on her lips.
