It wasn't Ravens first time being the third wheel, but it was definitely the worst.
She and Apple had just been together, she was injured, but ready to talk. All the work to get Apple comfortable to talk had all been undone in the twenty minutes she was gone.
Raven slowly approached the bathroom door and Apple's muffled sobs became more clear.
"Are you…" Raven was going to ask if she was ok, but she obviously wasn't. "Still ok to talk?" She picked every word carefully, she couldn't afford to make things worse right now. "About your injuries I mean! The other stuff can wait!"
"Do you even know how to do first aid?" Apple sniffed.
"I've picked up a thing or two from all those times I helped Dexter patch up Humphrey, I could also use magic."
"Please don't."
Raven chuckled softly.
"Fair enough."
Raven's phone buzzed with messages which she immediately silenced and tossed on her bed.
"I wish we hadn't taken that stupid DNA test." Raven sighed, "But at least it wasn't during our second year."
Apple snorted.
"Imagine if we found out when we were kids. Maybe you would be begging me to sign."
"Would I have still gone through the magical ritual by then? If so then maybe I would cast a spell on you to make you evil! Mwahaha!" Raven cackled with an exaggerated witchy shrill.
Apple laughed weakly. It was good to hear her laugh again but it was clear that all her energy was drained.
Raven heard the sound of the first aid kit being opened and got tried to open the door.
"Raven the door is locked!"
"Well, unlock it!"
"It's locked because I want to be alone you dumb- uh… stupid-no wait I…" Apple tried to find the words. "Ugh! I'm too mad to think!"
"You don't have a lot of experience with insults huh?"
"That's a good thing."
Raven sighed, the conversation was going nowhere. She had so much to say but didn't even know where to start.
Calm down Raven, she told herself. Just act natural and ask her a casual question, work your way up to the topic at hand.
"So… um, how about that bookball game?"
What? Why would I say that?
"Book…ball?" Apple stretched out each syllable in disbelief as if she was hearing the words for the first time.
"Yeah! That was a great game! Us against… that team!" Raven blurted out in an unnaturally gruff voice. "The bookball was… thrown really far and they ran just, so fast and-"
The bathroom door opened.
"Raven please stop talking."
"Thank fairy Godmother, I don't know anything about Bookball." Raven exhaled. The gruff voice was starting to hurt her throat.
…
"OUT THE WINDOW?"
Apple rolled her eyes as if she had told a minor anecdote.
"Yes, yes I know, but to be fair it's not like that the worst fall someone in this school has taken. Besides, nothings broken."
Raven was going to tear out her hair.
"That's not the point! You were that scared of seeing Darling? Why? She was worried sick!"
"I was-ow!" Apple but her lip. "Careful with the disinfectant!" Raven put the final band-aid on Apple's arm. "I didn't want her to see me because I know what her parents are like! You of all people know how strict they are."
"But they never stopped me and Dexter from dating! Maybe you could just-"
"Raven you haven't heard the stories that Darling told me. They didn't treat the boys the way they treated her!"
"Oh I'm sure it was bad but-"
"Darling's Father wanted to lock her in a tower for years until it was time for her to be married! She's like a doll to them and…"
Apple chocked on her words.
"They wouldn't like me anymore!"
With that Apple finally broke down in tears. Her nonchalant facade washing away with it
"I-*hic* don't want them to hate me…But I don't want to lose Darling!"
Raven sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her into a hug. She was used to being hated for something she couldn't control, but Apple wasn't.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. We can figure this out. I mean, we have to!"
"I wish we never took that stupid DNA test!" Apple sniffed back her tears. "Everything was perfect! I was getting my destiny, you were getting your freedom! Everyone was happy for once!"
Raven didn't know if she would put it that strongly, but she nodded in agreement anyways.
"What did we even get out of it anyways? A few people could see who they're related to? Most of us already know that! Why did Faybelle have to suggest taking a…
Apple stopped mid-rant.
"Wait a minute…"
"What? What is it?" Raven asked.
Apple's pale face became red with fury. She grabbed some clothes out of her laundry and slammed the bathroom door shut. In minutes she opened the door dressed in a simple red one piece and threw on her apple-patterned raincoat.
Raven could barley process what was happening.
"Apple wait! What are you doing? Did you figure something out?"
Raven hadn't seen Apple this angry since Legacy Day, but this wasn't devastated and confused, it was searing hot rage.
Apple looked back at Raven, her eyes narrowing.
"That fairy is going to pay!"
The next few moments were a blur, and the next thing she knew, Raven was once again chasing after Apple.
What had she meant? Why Faybelle? Sure she was the one to suggest the DNA test, but that shouldn't have made Apple this angry.
They flew down the stairs past the other dorms. Which opened to see the commotion.
"Apple calm down, It's not Faybelle's fault!"
Well, mostly.
Apple gracefully zipped down the hall and eventually was out of Raven's line of vision.
She turned around to find a crowd of students gathered in the hallway.
"It's Raven!" A boy dressed as a cobbler whispered to his friends.
"Was that Apple she was chasing?" A sheepish girl hid behind her friends as she spoke.
"Do you think they're fighting?" A freshman exclaimed a bit louder than he probably meant to.
"No way! That would be so cool!" His friend, a tengu, said excitedly.
This was such a fairy fail! She didn't know how to talk to first years anymore. Was she getting old?
"Hey! That's no way to talk about Raven! She's not old at all! She's just bad at talking to people!"
Before their eyes Madeline Hatter had run to her side. Of course, that last comment was about me, the narrator, not the audience so I'm not sure why she said that part aloud. Regardless, Maddie pushed through the crowd and went to hug her friend.
"I haven't seen you since you left school! I know the narrator talked about you getting in a fight, but that's no reason for you to just disappear on us! You aren't a magician… well you are actually! I guess it's ok."
Raven didn't really know what she was talking about, but she was glad to see her.
"Raven!" Shouted another familiar voice.
The crowd split to let him through.
Dexter! Raven kissed him on the cheek and hugged him. He couldn't have picked a better time.
"Ooooooooh" the crowd jeered.
Raven rolled her eyes and pulled Dexter and Maddie aside.
"I need your help! Everything has gone off the rails!"
"What do you mean everything?" Dexter asked.
"I don't know! Apple said something about wanting to kill Faybelle and-"
"APPLE AND FAYBELLE ARE GONNA FIGHT!" The boy who cried wolf hollered.
"No I never said-" Raven tried to explain but she was quickly cut off as the rumour grew.
"I heard they were gonna fight over Darling!"
"I heard it was because Faybelle called Apple a failure of a fairytale!"
"No, it was because-"
"Because Faybelle wants to date Darling!"
"I heard it was because Apple wanted to kill Faybelle!"
"NO!" Raven shouted.
Everyone turned to look at her.
"Listen! I get things have been really weird these last few weeks but this isn't helping!" Raven gestured at the crowd. "We are all trying to figure this out and making up rumours will only make things worse! Faybelle isn't dating Darling, and Apple certainly isn't going kill Faybelle!"
A loud scream came from the schoolyard.
"Twisted teacups! That sounds like Faybelle!" Maddie gasped.
Everyone pushed and shoved each other to get a look out the window.
"Oh my gosh! They're fighting!"
"FIGHT IN THE SCHOOLYARD!"
The sound of mirrorpads sending messages rang through the hallway as the crowd stampeded down the stairs.
"Hey! Everybody stop this didn't you hear what we just said?" Dexter yelped as he was run over by the crowd.
"Raven! Use your magic to stop them! Maddie cried as she clung on to the ceiling.
This would be impossible, but Maddie has the power to do the impossible, so long as she doesn't know it's impossible.
Raven was about to raise her hand to cast a spell but she stopped, sometimes her magic could be unpredictable. Using dark magic against the freshman could potentially cause more panic.
By the time she finished the thought they were already gone.
"I…don't want to hurt anyone by mistake." She replied weakly.
The yelling from the yard continued.
They all looked at one another and nodded.
"We'd better get a move on then."
"Ow! What is wrong with you?" Faybelle screeched.
Apple let go of her hair.
"What's wrong with me?" She cried . "You have no shame do you?"
"I helped you! You were the one that got all weird laying out in the rain like that. I'm not even supposed to be helping people so you should be grateful I didn't just leave you there!" Faybelle scoffed, fixing her ponytail.
"Well I wouldn't have accepted your "help" if I knew you were the one that told those papers about the switch!"
The crowd surrounding them gasped. Raven, Dexter and Maddie had just arrived and had been trying to disperse the crowd.
"You did what?" Raven stared at Faybelle in shock… of all the nasty little things to do.
Faybelle laughed with indignation.
"Really? Just because you're angry at your situation doesn't mean that I'm at fault."
"How did you know that it was leaked on a forum? That information was never released to the public!"
Faybelle stopped and contemplated for a bit, she looked like she was going to argue but stopped to think again before looking up at Apple.
"They were gonna find out eventually."
Apple looked appalled, which quickly turned to anger as she lunged and the fairy, tackling her the ground.
The crowd cheered and students began recording.
"Why would you tell them? What could you possibly gain from this!" She cried, her voice cracking. "My entire life has been ripped from me! ANSWER ME!" Tears streaming down her face.
The crowd stopped cheering, and the everything fell silent.
Raven rushed forward, pulling Apple off Faybelle.
Faybelle stood up and muttered an incantation to clean off the mud, fighting in the rain had made them both look like drowned cats.
"Little psycho" she grumbled.
Raven looked down at Apple, who was still breathing heavily, she was shaking from the rain.
"You really did this? Faybelle what is the matter with you." Raven said, eyes beginning to well up.
Despite everything, Faybelle appeared completely unfazed.
"Was I supposed to lie about it? Besides you both started encouraging people to "follow their destinies" Faybelle rolled her eyes. "Just choose to stay as you are normally I don't see the big deal!"
Apple broke free of Raven's grasp and stormed towards her.
"Are you serious right now?! I told you what would happen to my kingdom if I wasn't the biological heir!"
Faybelle chuckled.
"With how crazy you've been acting? I probably did your kingdom a favour."
The crowd turned to Apple to see her reaction.
Apples face went red and she was shaking with rage, but she took a deep breath and turned to walk away.
"Besides, you might actually be able to get away with dating Darling now."
The sound of a fist meeting skin echoed through the field. Faybelle looked up and wiped the blood for her face and looked at her fingers, fury slowly creeping across her face.
"You little witch!" She screamed, lunging at Apple.
The crowd erupted in cheers.
"FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!"
Practically everyone was recording them.
"You want a fight so bad you'll get one!" Faybelle yelled. She took out her wand and her body was surrounded by magic. "Now come on then! Let's see what you're made of!"
Apple growled and charged.
But before either of them could strike, they froze mid-air, trapped a magic spell.
Madame Yaga floated towards the students, never breaking eye contact as she kept them suspended midair with her magic.
The students in the crowd quickly scattered back to their dorm rooms at the sight of Baba Yaga. Raven, Dexter and Maddie were the only spectators left.
Madam Yaga huffed and released them from her spell, dropping them on the wet grass. She moved aside and a tall figure approached them.
"What," Headmaster Grimm seethed. "IS THE MEANING OF THIS?"
