Chapter 28: Interlude

June 1, 1998 - Monday

Sunnydale High School

Principal Snyder sat at his desk, looking grim and uneasy. Suddenly, there was a forceful knock on the door. "What now?" he said, annoyed at the disruption. "Can't a man get any peace around here?"

The door swung open, revealing two lawyers, Aurora Hope, and Thomas Paine. They stride into the office without hesitation.

"Principal Snyder, I'm Aurora Hope, and this is my colleague, Thomas Paine. We're from Paine and Hope Law Firm out of Los Angeles," Aurora said, making the introductions.

"We're here to discuss a matter of great importance regarding two of your students," Thomas added, his tone serious. "The wrongful expulsion of our clients Dawn Summers and her cousin Buffy Summers."

Snyder's eyes narrowed as he remained seated, trying to maintain an air of authority. "Ah, Buffy and Dawn Summers," he said derisively. "Cleared of murder yet still causing trouble, I see."

Aurora cleared her throat and spoke firmly. "Principal Snyder, we've carefully reviewed the case involving Kendra Young's murder and have found no evidence connecting Buffy and Dawn to the crime. They were also cleared by the police after not only their own testimony but witness testimony as well. Your decision to expel them is a blatant violation of their rights."

Snyder leaned back in his chair, attempting to appear nonchalant. "I expelled them for the safety and order of this school," he said dismissively. "We can't have criminals roaming the hallways, can we?"

Thomas stepped forward, his voice measured and persuasive. "Principal Snyder, it is within your duties to ensure a fair and unbiased environment for all students. The expulsion of innocent individuals based on unfounded assumptions goes against the very principles of justice."

Snyder's facade began to crumble, with a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. "I acted in the best interest of the school," he said defensively. "Those girls bring nothing but chaos and trouble!"

Aurora leaned forward, her tone cutting and incisive. "Your personal biases and prejudices have no place in the administration of this school, Principal Snyder. We demand to see the concrete evidence that justified their expulsion."

Principal Snyder fumbled through his papers, searching for a nonexistent justification. "Well, you see..." he stammered. "I don't have it right here with me, but I assure you, I had my reasons!"

Thomas maintained his calm demeanor, but his voice carried an air of authority. "Principal Snyder, an expulsion without documented evidence is baseless and arbitrary. Buffy and Dawn are entitled to a fair process and the opportunity to defend themselves."

Snyder shifted uncomfortably in his seat, realizing he had no choice but to concede. "Fine," he said begrudgingly. "Their expulsion is lifted, but don't think this changes anything. They'll still have to prove themselves worthy of staying here."

Aurora stepped closer, her eyes gleaming with determination. "Rest assured, Principal Snyder, we will make sure that Buffy and Dawn receive fair treatment moving forward. Any further prejudice against them will not go unnoticed."

With their point made, Aurora and Thomas turned to leave, leaving Principal Snyder to confront his own misjudgments.

Stardust Resort & Spa, Kauai, Hawaii

Dawn and Faith embarked on their first vacation as a couple, eager to spend quality time together away from their responsibilities as Slayers. Their time away from Sunnydale would give Buffy and Chloe time together as meant that Chloe would be the one to patrol with Buffy.

Dawn and Faith found themselves with Elizabeth in a luxurious seaside resort, with pristine beaches and stunning ocean views. As they settled into their spacious suite, Dawn placed Elizabeth in the crib, ensuring she was comfortable and content. Elizabeth cooed happily, seemingly excited for the adventure that awaited them.

"Faith, can you believe we're here?" Dawn asked.

Faith grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Yeah, Dawnie, it's much needed after the fight with Nakamura. And having Elizabeth with us makes it even more special."

Buffy sat with Marie on the couch as they watched TV. Suddenly there was a knock on the door, and after glancing at Marie, she went to answer it. She opened the door to find Aurora and Thomas standing there, their faces carrying a mix of determination and reassurance.

"Hi," Buffy said, recognizing Dawn's lawyers. "Dawn's out of town with Faith and Elizabeth on vacation."

"We know," Aurora replied. "But we have some news for her and for you. Can we come in?"

Buffy nodded as she stepped aside, allowing the lawyers to enter her living room. She closed the door behind them, her curiosity piqued.

"Hi," Marie said looking at the lawyers.

"They have some news for Dawn and me," Buffy explained to her sister. She then turned toward Aurora and Thomas. "So, what's the good news?"

Thomas took a deep breath and grinned. "Principal Snyder has reconsidered yours and Dawn's expulsion, Buffy. You are no longer expelled from Sunnydale High School."

Buffy's eyes widen in disbelief. "Wait, seriously? He changed his mind?"

Aurora nodded. "Yes, seriously. We made it clear that the expulsions lacked proper justification, and Principal Snyder had no choice but to acknowledge his error. Starting in the fall, you and Dawn can return to school as students without any restrictions."

Buffy's face broke into a wide grin. "Thank you both so much. I can't even begin to express how much this means to me."

"It is the least we can do for Mark's niece and daughter," Thomas said.

"And we'll continue to advocate for you and Dawn, should any further issues arise," Aurora added assertively. "We won't let Principal Snyder or anyone else mistreat either of you unjustly."

Buffy's eyes well up with tears as she realized how much her uncle had meant to them. "Uncle Mark was more than just an employee, wasn't he?"

Thomas and Aurora both nod in agreement. "You really didn't think we were made the executors of Dawn's inheritance simply because we were his employers, did you?" Thomas asked.

"We considered him family, and he considered us the same. We had intended before his and Lyssa's deaths to make him a full partner," Aurora said with a warm smile. "The least we could do is watch over his family for him. And since you, your sister, and your mother mean the world to Dawn, that means you mean the world to us. So please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything at all."

Buffy looked at them with tears in her eyes, overwhelmed by their kindness.

Hand in hand, they explored the resort, relishing in the warm sun and the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore. They found a secluded spot on the beach, where they spread out a comfortable blanket and watched as Lily wriggled her tiny toes in the sand.

"Look at her, Faith," Dawn said happily. "She's already falling in love with the beach."

Faith's heart swelled with pride as she observed Elizabeth. "She's a natural-born adventurer, just like her mom. I can't wait till the day when we get married next summer. I intend to show her all the wonders of the world."

They spent the day building sandcastles, taking leisurely walks along the shore, and dipping their toes in the crystal-clear water. Dawn and Faith took turns cuddling Lily, introducing her to the joys of beach life. They watched as Lily squealed with delight, feeling the gentle waves tickle her tiny feet.

During the evening, after putting Lily to bed, they indulged in a candlelit dinner, savoring an exquisite meal and engaging in a heartfelt conversation.

"Faith, I'm so grateful for this time together," Dawn informed her fiancée. "Being able to relax with you away from the pressures of the Hellmouth—it's everything I could have hoped for."

Faith's eyes softened with tenderness as she reached across the table, capturing Dawn's hand in her own. "Dawn, you and Elizabeth are my world. This vacation is just a glimpse of the future we'll build together. I love you both with all my heart."

Dawn and Faith woke up to the soft sound of waves caressing the shore. The sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow through the curtains of their suite. They looked at each other with excitement.

After getting dressed, they attended to Elizabeth's needs, making sure she was well-rested and nourished. With Elizabeth comfortably nestled in her stroller, they ventured out to explore the resort's lush gardens and scenic pathways.

As they strolled along, the scent of tropical flowers filled the air, and the gentle ocean breeze kissed their faces. Lily cooed happily, her eyes filled with wonder at the vibrant colors and interesting sights around her.

"Look, Faith, the resort has a children's play area," Dawn said motioning toward the playground. "I think Elizabeth would love to spend some time there."

Faith grinned, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. "Definitely, Dawnie. Let's give her a chance to have some fun and maybe make some new little friends."

Department of Motor Vehicles, Sunnydale

Buffy stood outside the DMV Testing Center, her heart pounding with a mix of nerves and excitement. Thanks to Dawn's help before she left on vacation, Buffy passed her driving test. Now she was sitting in a car, preparing to finally take the driving test.

"Good afternoon, Miss Summers. I'll be conducting your driving test today. Are you ready?" the DMV instructor said.

Buffy nodded, summoning her confidence. "Yes, I'm ready."

The instructor gestures toward a vehicle parked nearby. "Please step into the car, and we'll begin shortly," he instructed.

Buffy took a deep breath and reminded herself to stay calm and focused. She had practiced with Dawn for weeks and knew she could do this. As she settled into the driver's seat, she felt a surge of determination to pass the test on her first try. She adjusted the mirrors and got comfortable as the instructor settled into the passenger seat, fastening his seatbelt.

She started the engine and checked all the controls, making sure everything was in working order. She then pulled out of the parking lot and onto the road, ready to demonstrate her driving skills. As she drove, she kept a steady pace and followed all traffic laws, hoping to impress the instructor with her confidence behind the wheel.

Dawn and Faith found their way to the colorful play area, filled with slides, swings, and playful structures. Dawn carefully placed Elizabeth in a safe and shaded spot where she could observe other children playing. Elizabeth gurgled happily, clapping her hands with excitement as she watched the other children laughing and playing. Dawn and Faith stood nearby, ensuring Elizabeth was safe while allowing her the freedom to explore.

As they stood there watching Elizabeth, Dawn and Faith's fingers intertwined. "Faith, it's moments like these that make me appreciate our love even more. I'm so grateful to have you by my side, supporting and loving me and Elizabeth."

Faith's gaze held a mixture of tenderness and devotion as she replied. "Dawn, you and Elizabeth mean the world to me. Building this life with you, sharing these beautiful moments—it's everything I've ever wanted. I love you, always," she said as their lips met in a sweet and tender kiss.

They then decided to join Elizabeth in her exploration of the colorful structures. They took turns pushing her gently on the swings, their laughter blending with Elizabeth's infectious giggles.

Buffy brought the car to a stop, her hands slightly trembling. The instructor turned to her with a neutral expression on his face. "You've done well, Miss Summers. Your driving skills are commendable," he said as Buffy's eyes widen with anticipation, waiting for the final verdict. "I'm pleased to inform you that you have passed your driving test. Congratulations."

A surge of joy washed over Buffy, a wide grin spreading across her face. She could hardly contain her excitement. "Thank you! Thank you so much!" she exclaimed, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over her. As she stepped out of the car, she saw Joyce and Marie waiting anxiously. She rushed over to him. "I passed," she said excitedly.

"Oh, Buffy, I'm so proud of you!" Joyce spoke as her eyes glistened.

Marie hugged her big sister tightly and said, "You did it! I knew you could!"

Buffy embraced both her mother and her sister, overwhelmed with happiness.

"There is only one thing left," Joyce said as she smiled. She held up a set of keys. "Dawn must have known you would pass. She took some of her inheritance, and sitting next to Faith's motorcycle in Dawn's garage is your very own car."

Buffy's eyes widened in surprise as she took the keys from her mother's hand. "I can't believe it!" she exclaimed. "I can't believe Dawn would do that!"

"I know," Joyce replied, "but you know your sister. She's always been proud of you. And even though she couldn't be here for this moment, she wanted to show her support in a big way."

As the afternoon sun grew warmer, they decided to take a break from the play area and headed to a nearby beachside café. They settled at a shaded table, with Elizabeth comfortably seated in a highchair beside them.

"Let's savor some delicious food while enjoying the view, shall we?" Dawn suggested.

Faith nodded, scanning the menu with anticipation. "Sounds perfect, Dawnie. I'm ready to indulge in some mouthwatering treats."

They savored fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and refreshing drinks, all the while sharing stories, dreams, and laughter. Elizabeth happily sat between them, enjoying her own baby-friendly meal.

As the sun began to set, casting vibrant hues of orange and purple across the sky, they walked hand in hand along the shoreline, their bare feet sinking into the warm sand. Elizabeth's tiny hand clung to Dawn's finger; her eyes captivated by the beauty of the setting sun.

"Look, Elizabeth," Dawn said motioning out toward the water. "It's a magical sunset, just for us."

Faith wrapped her arm around Dawn's waist, her voice filled with awe. "Elizabeth is experiencing the wonders of the world, right here in our arms. I can't wait to show her more."

They stood together, watching as the sun dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a breathtaking panorama of colors. As the day drew to a close, they returned to their suite, with Elizabeth cozily tucked in her crib. Dawn and Faith curled up on the couch, their bodies entwined, reveling in the serenity of the evening.

"Faith, today has been incredible," Dawn said. "Watching Elizabeth explore and experiencing these precious moments together—it's been pure bliss."

Faith pressed a gentle kiss to Dawn's forehead, her voice filled with warmth. "Every day with you and Elizabeth is a gift, Dawn."

Dawn and Faith woke up to another glorious morning. The sun painted the sky with vibrant hues, promising yet another day of unforgettable moments.

After a leisurely breakfast, they decided to explore the resort's expansive gardens, with Elizabeth cradled in Faith's arms. The lush greenery and blooming flowers created a picturesque backdrop as they meandered along winding paths.

"Look at all these beautiful flowers, Elizabeth," Dawn said. "They're just as lovely as you are."

Elizabeth cooed in response, her eyes wide with wonder, as if she understood every word her mother spoke.

Buffy stood in front of the closed garage door, Chloe and Xander by her side. Buffy held the key her mother had given her the day before in her hand, her heart racing with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation.

Chloe placed a supportive hand on Buffy's back. "You ready, Buffy? I can't wait to see your reaction!"

"Neither can I," said Xander from where he stood beside the garage door.

Buffy took a deep breath. "I'm ready," she said, motioning toward Xander.

Xander smiled and pushed the garage door upward, revealing the hidden treasure inside.

The sunlight poured into the garage, illuminating the sleek and vibrant red Pontiac Firebird convertible parked beside Faith's Ducati motorcycle. Its curved body and shining chrome accents instantly caught Buffy's attention. "Oh, wow. No way," Buffy said in awe.

Chloe grinned, excitement radiating from her. "Dawn spared, well, maybe a little expense. But she wanted something she knew you might like. The insurance is all taken care of as it's coming out of her inheritance."

Buffy walked over to the car and ran her hand over the smooth surface. "I can't believe it. This is amazing," she said, admiring the attention to detail in the design.

Chloe nodded in agreement. "It's a real beauty. And who knows, maybe there's a hidden treasure inside," she teased with a wink. Buffy laughed and opened the door, eager to take it for a spin.

They found a serene spot beneath a towering tree, its branches providing a canopy of shade. Dawn and Faith settled down on a blanket, letting Lily explore the soft grass with her tiny fingers. "Faith, I can't believe how fast she's growing. It feels like just yesterday I brought her home, and now she's already discovering the world around her."

Faith's eyes gleamed with adoration as she watched Elizabeth's hands reach out to touch the grass. "Time flies, Dawnie. But I'm grateful for every single moment we have with each other and with her."

As the morning unfolded, they took turns playing with Elizabeth, blowing gentle kisses on her cheeks, and making her laugh with silly faces. Elizabeth's infectious laughter filled the air, bringing joy to everyone around.

In the afternoon, they decided to venture to the resort's pool area, where they found a family-friendly pool with a shallow end for children. Faith held Elizabeth securely in her arms as they stepped into the refreshing water, while Dawn watched nearby with a smile.

"Look at my…" Dawn started and as she watched Faith and Elizabeth, she realized that the wedding was just a formality. She and Faith were already married in all but legality. Which made Elizabeth Faith's daughter as well. "…Our little water baby. She's enjoying it so much!"

Faith gently swayed Elizabeth back and forth, the water splashing playfully around them. "Did you just refer to her as ours?" she asked as Dawn nodded. She smiled at her fiancée, she couldn't be happier that Dawn already thought of them as being married and thought of her as Elizabeth's other mother. "She's fearless, just like both of her moms. We'll have to teach her how to swim one day."

They spent the afternoon in the pool, taking turns splashing, floating, and sharing laughter-filled moments with Elizabeth. It was a true bonding experience, filled with love and joy.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the resort, they made their way back to their suite, their bodies tired but hearts full. They prepared a simple dinner, ensuring Elizabeth's favorite foods were on the menu.

After their meal, they settled into a cozy corner of the suite, with Elizabeth snuggled against Dawn's chest. They took turns reading her bedtime stories, their voices lulling her into a peaceful sleep.

"Faith, these past couple of days have been everything I could have wished for. Seeing Elizabeth's joy and spending this time together—it's been a dream come true."

Faith pressed a soft kiss to Elizabeth's forehead, then turned to Dawn with a tender smile. "Every day with you and Elizabeth is a gift, Dawn."

Summers Home

Buffy sat on her bed, holding her phone in her hand. She dialed the number Chloe had given her for the resort Dawn was staying at in Hawaii. She waited anxiously as the phone rang.

After a few moments, Dawn's voice came through the line. "Hello?"

"Hey, Dawn! It's me, Buffy!" Buffy said it excitedly.

"Hey, Faith, it's Buffy!" Dawn said.

"Hey, B. What's up?" Faith's voice came from the other end of the line.

"Everything okay?" Dawn asked.

Buffy grinned. "More than okay, Dawn," she answered. "I have some incredible news, and I couldn't wait to tell you."

"Okay, spill it," Dawn replied. "What's going on?"

Buffy took a deep breath, unable to contain her excitement any longer. "I passed my driver's test."

Faith let out a whoop of excitement. "That's amazing, B!"

"I knew you could do it," Dawn added. "Which means, mom hs likely already shown you the gift I got you in celebration."

Buffy nodded. "She did. I can't even begin to express how grateful I am to Dawn for buying me my first car. You're amazing."

There's a pause, and then Dawn's voice comes through, filled with emotion.

"Buffy, I wanted to do something special for you," Dawn said. "You've always been there for me, and I wanted to show you how much you mean to me."

Buffy's eyes filled with tears. "Dawn, you've just blown me away. I don't know what to say. Thank you so much. This car represents so much more than just a vehicle. It's a symbol of our bond as sisters."

Dawn smiled through her own tears. "I love you, Buffy. I'm so glad I could make you happy. You deserve it."

"I love you too, Dawn," Buffy said. "And you, too, Faith."

"Back at you, B," Faith replied.

"So, when are you taking me for a ride?" Dawn asked.

Buffy chuckled. "How about as soon as you get back from Hawaii? We'll go on an adventure."

"Count me in, sister! It's going to be epic," Dawn replied.

June 4, 1998 – Thursday

Stardust Resort & Spa, Kauai, Hawaii

Dawn and Faith awoke to the sound of gentle waves and the warmth of the sun caressing their faces. After a delightful breakfast in the resort's open-air café, they decided to explore the nearby nature trail. With Elizabeth snuggled comfortably in a baby carrier against Dawn's chest, they set off on their leisurely hike.

The trail wound through a lush forest, where sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting a soft glow on their path. Elizabeth seemed captivated by the sights and sounds around her, her curious eyes taking in the swaying trees and chirping birds.

"Look at all the trees, Elizabeth," Dawn said. "They're like nature's guardians, protecting and embracing us. This is our little escape, our sanctuary."

Faith smiled, her eyes sparkling with affection. "Yeah," she agreed.

They walked hand in hand, stopping occasionally to point out interesting plants and creatures to Elizabeth. The cool breeze brushed against their skin, invigorating their spirits and strengthening their bond as a family. As they reached a clearing, they found a serene meadow dotted with colorful wildflowers. They carefully set down a blanket and let Elizabeth explore the soft grass, her tiny fingers reaching out to touch the petals.

"These flowers are just as beautiful as you, Elizabeth," Dawn said. "Nature has a way of mirroring the beauty within our hearts."

Faith joined them on the blanket, her fingers gently brushing against Elizabeth's cheek. "Our little angel deserves to grow up surrounded by love and the wonders of the world."

They spent the afternoon in the meadow, enjoying a picnic lunch filled with fresh fruits, sandwiches, and laughter. Lily giggled as they made funny faces and shared bites of their food with her, creating a joyful atmosphere that echoed through the peaceful surroundings.

As the day progressed, they decided to explore the beach once again, taking advantage of the clear skies and gentle tides. Dawn and Faith held hands as they strolled along the sandy shore.

"We've only been here a couple days, but this beach holds so many memories for us and Elizabeth, Faith," Dawn admitted.

Faith nodded; her voice filled with affection. "It's like a tapestry of love, weaving together our past, present, and future."

They sat near the water's edge, building sandcastles and collecting seashells as Elizabeth watched with wide-eyed fascination. The cool seawater gently washed over their feet, bringing a sense of tranquility and contentment.

As the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow across the horizon, they wrapped Elizabeth in a soft blanket and settled down on the sand, their arms wrapped around each other. They watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. It was a moment of pure serenity and gratitude.

As they made their way back to the resort, carrying Elizabeth in their arms, they knew that their seaside adventure had brought them closer as a family.

Author's Note: 'Anne' and 'Dead's Man Party' are being skipped. This is because Buffy doesn't go to Los Angeles and Dawn would have remembered the mask and made sure it was destroyed before it started resurrecting zombies. And of course, 'Faith, Hope, and Trick' was already included all the way back in chapter 7. So, the next chapter will be Beauty and the Beasts.
