Plot

In 1985, teenager Marty McFly lives in Hill Valley, California, with his depressed alcoholic mother, Lorraine; his older siblings, who are professional and social failures; and his meek father, George, who is bullied by his supervisor, Biff Tannen. After Marty's band fails a music audition, he confides in his girlfriend, Jennifer Parker, that he fears becoming like his parents despite his ambitions.

That night, Marty meets his eccentric scientist friend, Emmett "Doc" Brown, in the Twin Pines mall parking lot. Doc unveils a time machine built from a modified DeLorean, powered by plutonium he swindled from Libyan terrorists. After Doc inputs a destination time of November 5, 1955 (the day he first conceived his time travel invention), the terrorists arrive unexpectedly and gun him down. Marty flees in the DeLorean, inadvertently activating time travel when he reaches 88 miles per hour (142 kilometers per hour).

Arriving in 1955, Marty discovers he has no plutonium to return. While exploring a burgeoning Hill Valley, Marty encounters his teenage father and discovers Biff was bullying George even then. George falls into the path of an oncoming car while spying on the teenage Lorraine changing clothes, and Marty is knocked unconscious while saving him. He wakes to find himself tended to by Lorraine, who becomes infatuated with him. Marty tracks down and convinces a younger Doc that he is from the future, but Doc explains the only source available in 1955 capable of generating the power required for time travel is a lightning bolt. Marty shows Doc a flyer from the future that documents an upcoming lightning strike at the town's courthouse. As Marty's siblings begin to fade from a photo he is carrying with him, Doc realizes Marty's actions are altering the future and jeopardizing his existence; Lorraine was supposed to tend to George instead of Marty after the car accident. Early attempts to get his parents acquainted fail, and Lorraine's infatuation with Marty deepens.

Lorraine asks Marty to the school dance, and he plots to feign inappropriate advances on her, allowing George to intervene and rescue her, but the plan goes awry when Biff's gang locks Marty in the trunk of the performing band's car, while Biff forces himself onto Lorraine. George arrives expecting to find Marty but is assaulted by Biff. After Biff hurts Lorraine, an enraged George knocks him unconscious and escorts the grateful Lorraine to the dance. The band frees Marty from their car, but the lead guitarist injures his hand in the process, so Marty takes his place, performing while George and Lorraine share their first kiss. With his future no longer in jeopardy, Marty heads to the courthouse to meet Doc.

Doc discovers a letter from Marty warning him about his future and rips it, worried about the consequences. To save Doc, Marty recalibrates the DeLorean to return ten minutes before he left the future. The lightning strikes, sending Marty back to 1985, but the DeLorean breaks down, forcing Marty to run back to the mall. He arrives as Doc is being shot. While Marty grieves at his side, Doc sits up, revealing he pieced Marty's note back together and wore a bulletproof vest. He takes Marty home and departs to 2015 in the DeLorean. Marty wakes the next morning to discover his father is now a confident and successful science fiction author, his mother is fit and happy, his siblings are successful, and Biff is a servile valet in George's employ. As Marty reunites with Jennifer, Doc suddenly reappears in the DeLorean, insisting they return with him to the future to save their children from terrible fates.[a]

Notes:

As depicted in Back to the Future – Part II (1989).

"So, are we still doing all this time travel nonsense?" Bruce asked.

Alex nodded.

Alex clicked on a PS4, popped in the DVD for Back to the Future, waited a couple of seconds for the disc to show up, pressed X on the controller, and pressed play on the remote control.

The movie starts with a "Universal Pictures: An MCA Company" logo, before transitioning to a title screen that reads "Steven Spielberg Presents".

All the 1980s movies fan (mainly Ned-1999999 and Peter-1) screamed.

"Who's Steven Spielberg?" Steve and Bucky asked.

"He was a director responsible for a lot of 1970s and 1980s movies, mainly Jaws, 1941, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade, Hook, Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Lincoln, The BFG, and Ready Player One." Peter explained. [1]

Steve and Bucky still looked confused.

"We'll show you the movies after we're done with this." Peter said.

The title transitions to another card reading "A Robert Zemeckis Film", clocks start ticking, as the title reveals "Back to the Future". The clocks continue ticking, as the camera pans around the interior of Doc's house, as the casting credits are shown. The camera pans to a couple of news articles, one by the Hill Valley Telegraph reading "Brown Mansion Destroyed" and another reading "Brown Estate Sold to Developers", as a subtitle reads "Bankrupt Inventor Sells Off 135 Prime Acres".

Judge Brown looked horrified, as Doc looked ashamed.

The camera pans down showing pictures of Doc's favorite inventors, Isaac Newton and Thomas Edison, while showing some of Doc's inventory, a camera, an Burger King meal, and a JVC camera, it also shows a radio, which begins broadcasting.

Announcer: October is inventory time, so right now, Statler Toyota is making the best deals of the year on all 1985-model Toyota's. You won't find a better car at a better price with better service anywhere in Hill Valley.

The timer for the coffee goes off, as the water starts boiling on the coffee maker, which has no holder, some of Doc's clocks are shown, including a 1980s Denver Broncos clock.

"Boo!" came all the Giants and Jets fan.

"Boo!" Alex quietly exclaimed, as he was a Seattle Seahawks fan.

Announcer: That's Statler Toyota in downtown Hill Valley.

The camera pans to a 1980s-vintage TV that Doc has, as the TV is shown to see a news report.

Newscaster: The Senate is expected to vote on this today. In other news, officials at the Pacific Nuclear research facility have denied the rumor that a case of missing plutonium was in fact stolen from their vault two weeks ago. A text shows "Plutonium Theft ?" with a logo below showing a plutonium logo. A Libyan terrorist group had claimed responsibility for the alleged theft. An alarm starts ringing. However, officials now attribute the discrepancy to a simple clerical error. Toast starts coming out of the toaster as the camera pans away again.

"Just like politicians to start blaming things on errors without looking into actual facts." Stevw said, shaking his head disappointedly.

Newscaster: The FBI, which is investigating the matter, had no comment. The sound starts fading out as the camera pans away. The camera shows a can mover moving a can of Einstein's dog food, opening it and dumping it in Einstein's bowl, making a mess in the process, before dumping the can into the trashcan, as the door opens, as a teenager with a skateboard, Marty McFly is shown.

Marty: Hey, Doc? He puts a key under his welcome doormat. Doc? He opens the door, shutting it. Hello! Anybody home? Einstein, come here boy. He whistles, only to get no response. What's going on? Oh, God. Oh, Jesus. (referring to Einstein's dog food) That is disgusting. Where the hell is he? He moves the skateboard under a table, which reveals a case of plutonium.

Doc looked away.

"Why do you have a case of plutonium?" George and Lorraine asked.

"You'll see." Marty smiled.

The next scene shows Marty plugging a key into a guitar amplifier. He turns every switch on and turns the gauges to the highest setting, and he connects his guitar to the amplifier, before trying to play his guitar, which blasts Marty back.

George and Lorraine looked away, as some bookcase files fell on Marty.

Marty: Whoa! Rock 'n' roll. An alarm starts ringing, as Marty answers the telephone. Yo.

Doc Brown (on telephone): Marty, is that you?

Marty: Hey. Hey, Doc. Where are you?

Doc (on telephone): Thank God I've found you.

"Why?" George and Lorraine asked suspiciously.

Doc (on telephone): Listen, can you meet me at Twin Pines Mall tonight at 1:15? I made a major breakthrough, and I'll need your assistance.

Marty: Wait a minute. 1:15 in the morning?

Doc (on telephone): Yeah.

Marty: Doc, what's going on? Where you been all week?

Doc (on telephone): Working.

"On what?" everybody asked.

Marty: Where's Einstein? Is he with you?

Doc (on telephone): Yeah, he's right here.

Marty: You know, Doc, you left your equipment on all week.

Doc (on telephone): My equipment. That reminds me, Marty. You better not hook up to the amplifier. There's a slight possibility of overload.

Marty: Yeah. I'll keep that in mind.

Everybody laughed.

Doc (on telephone): Good. I'll see you tonight. Don't forget now. 1:15 a.m., Twin Pines Mall.

Marty: Right.

The clocks start chiming.

Doc (on telephone): Are those my clocks I hear?

Marty: Yeah, it's 8:00.

Doc (on telephone): Perfect! My experiment worked! They're all exactly 25 minutes slow!

Marty: Wait a minute. Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me that it's 8:25?

Doc (on telephone): Precisely.

Marty: Damn! I'm late for school.

Everybody chuckled.

Music starts playing as "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News starts playing.

The power of love is a curious thing(as Marty is skating the Burger King across from Doc's house)

Make a one man weep, make another man sing

Change a hawk to a little white dove (as Marty is clinging to a truck)

More than a feeling, that's the power of love

You don't need money, don't take fame

Marty waved to the girls in the gym.

Don't need no credit card to ride this train

It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes

But it might just save your life

That's the power of love

That's the power of love

The scene cuts to a scene of Marty approaching Hill Valley High School.

First time you feel it, it might make you mad

The song starts going out of tune as it ends.

Marty: Yo, Jennifer.

Jennifer: Marty, don't go this way. Strickland's looking for you. If you get caught, it'll be four tardies in a row.

"Aw, man, I love that song." Peter said.

Jennifer: All right, come on. I think we're safe.

Marty: You know, this time it wasn't my fault. The doc set all his clocks 25 minutes slow.

Suddenly, Principal Stanford Strickland approaches.

Strickland: The doc? Am I to understand you're still hanging around with Dr. Emmett Brown, McFly? He clicks his tongue. Tardy slip for you, Miss Parker. And one for you, McFly. I believe that makes four in a row. Let me give you a nickel's worth of free advice, young man. This so-called Doctor Brown is dangerous. He's a real nutcase.

"He is not!" everybody exclaimed.

Strickland: You hang around with him, you're gonna end up in big trouble.

Marty: Ooh. Yes, sir.

Strickland: You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You're a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.

"Marty and George are not slackers!" Lorraine exclaimed, tired of Strickland's attitude towards the family.

Marty: Can I go now, Mr. Strickland?

Strickland: I noticed your band is on the roster for the dance auditions after school today. Why even bother, McFly? You don't have a chance. You're too much like your old man. No McFly ever amounted to anything in the history of Hill Valley.

Marty: Yeah, well, history is gonna change.

The scene cuts to later in the day, during dance auditions.

Judge (using a megaphone): Next, please.

The synthesizer starts playing.

Marty (to his band): Okay, let's rock 'n roll.

"Amen to that." Marty's fellow rock 'n roll Stans said.

Marty (using the microphone): All right. We're the… We're the Pinheads.

Band Member: One, two, three.

Marty starts playing to the tune of "Power of Love" on the guitar, as Jennifer and the judges are watching.

Judge: Okay, that's enough. Thank you, fellas. Hold it, fellas. I'm afraid you're just too darn loud.

"That was awesome." Tony defended.

Judge: Next, please.

Jennifer looks at Marty, who looks dejected and upset.

Judge: Bring up the next group, please.

The scene cuts to the Courthouse Square.

Announcer: Re-elect Mayor "Goldie" Wilson. Progress is his middle name.

Goldie smiled.

"I was wrong, I admit it." 1955-Lou said at a look from everybody. "I'm proud of you, Goldie. Truly."

Goldie smiled.

Marty: "Too loud." I can't believe it. I'm never gonna get a chance to play in front of anybody.

Jennifer: Marty, one rejection isn't the end of the world.

Marty: I just don't think I'm cut out for music.

Jennifer: But you're good, Marty. You're really good, and this audition tape (holds up a tape in her hands) of yours is great. You've gotta send it in to the record company. It's like Doc's always saying.

Marty: Yeah, I know. I know. "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."

George raised an eyebrow. He said that.

Jennifer: That's good advice, Marty.

Marty: All right, okay, Jennifer. What if I send in the tape and they don't like it? What if they say I'm no good? What if they say, "Get out of here, kid. You got no future"? I mean, I just don't think I can take that kind of rejection. Jesus, I'm starting to sound like my old man.

George raised an eyebrow. He remembered saying that at least once, but that was in the past.

Jennifer: Come on. He's not that bad.

Nearby, a lady is asking for money.

Lady: Save the clock tower.

"From what?" George asked.

Nobody responded.

Jennifer: At least he's letting you borrow the car tomorrow night.

Marty stands on a bench, looking at a Statler Toyota.

Marty: Check out that 4x4. That is hot.

Car Dealer: Okay. Back her up.

George smiled, remembering that Marty had the same truck.

Marty: Someday, Jennifer. Someday.

"But you have it." George said.

Marty didn't say anything, knowing that this was before he changed the past.

Marty: Wouldn't it be great to take that truck up to the lake? Throw a couple of sleeping bags in the back. Lie out underneath the stars.

Jennifer: Stop it.

Marty: What?

Jennifer: Does your mom know? About tomorrow night?

Marty: No, get out of town. My mom thinks I'm going camping with the guys. Jennifer, mother would freak out if she knew I was going with you, and I'd get the standard lecture about how she never did that kind of stuff when she was a kid. I mean, look, I think the woman was born a nun.

Lorraine raised an eyebrow.

"I wouldn't give you a lecture!" she exclaimed.

Marty looked down, knowing that that Lorraine and this Lorraine were two different people.

Lorraine: She's just trying to keep you respectable.

Marty: Well, she's not doing a good job.

Lorraine: Terrible.

He leans to kiss her only for a lady to interrupt her, shaking a tip jar.

Lady: Save the clock tower. Save the clock tower. Mayor Wilson is sponsoring an initiative to replace that clock. Thirty years ago, lightning struck that clock tower and the clock hasn't run since. We at the Hill Valley Preservation Society think it should be preserved exactly the way it is as part of our history and heritage.

Marty puts in a quarter in the tip jar.

Marty: Here you go, lady. That's a quarter.

Lady: Thank you. Don't forget to take a flier.

Marty: Right.

Lady: Save the clock tower!

She walks away.

"Well, that was rude for her to interrupt a kiss!" Lorraine exclaimed.

Marty: Where were we?

Jennifer: Right about here.

He leans in to kiss her, only for a horn to interrupt, the car being Danny Parker Jr., Jennifer's father.

Danny Jr.: Jennifer.

Jennifer: It's my dad. I've got to go.

Marty: Right. (as Jennifer starts to walk away) I'll call you tonight.

Jennifer: I'll be at my grandma's. Here, let me give you the number. She writes down the number on the back of the flier as Jennifer kisses him. Bye.

"The Power of Love" plays again in the background.

That's the power of love

That's the power of love

On the back, Jennifer wrote "I love you!" and below the number "555-4823".

"Aww." Jennifer cooed as Marty and Jennifer looked embarrassed.

First time you feel it, it might make you sad

Next time you feel it, it might make you mad

But do be glad when you've found

That's the power of love

That's the power that makes the world go 'round

The scene cuts to Marty arriving at the "Lyon Estates" neighborhood.

And it don't take money, don't take fame

Don't need a credit card to ride this train

It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes

But it might just save your life

As Marty comes to his house, he sees a tow truck carrying the family truck.

Radio Dispatcher: Bravo, Tango, Delta 6-2-9. Please respond.

"What happened to the truck?" George asked.

Marty (sarcasm): Perfect. Just perfect.

He opens the door, running into an argument with his father, George and his supervisor, Biff Tannen.

Biff: I can't believe you would loan me a car without telling me it had a blind spot.

Marty: Blind spot?

Biff: I could've been killed.

"Biff." George grunted, ready to punch him.

George: Now, Biff, now, I never noticed that the car had any blind spot before when I would drive it. (toMarty) Hi, Son.

Biff notices Marty, before he walks away.

Biff: What, are you blind, McFly? It's there. How else do you explain that wreck out there?

"Reckless driving?" George stated.

George: Biff, can I assume that your insurance is going to pay for the damage?

Biff: My insurance? It's your car. Your insurance should pay for it. I wanna know who's going to pay for this? I spilled beer all over it when the car smashed into me. Who's going to pay my cleaning bill?

"He was drinking." George grunted, ready to punch Biff.

"I didn't do that!" Biff defended himself.

Marty stayed quiet, knowing that happened before he messed with time travel.

George: Ah…

Biff: And where's my reports?

George: Well, I haven't finished those up yet, but I figured since they weren't due till…

Biff grabs George by his tie and bangs his head with his knuckles.

Biff: Hello? Hello? Anybody home? Huh? Think, McFly. Think!

George (laughing): All right.

George was about to punch Biff for touching him like that.

Biff: I got to have time to get them retyped. Do you realize what would happen if I hand in my reports in your handwriting? I'll get fired. You wouldn't want that to happen, would you? He grabs George by the tie again. Would you?

George: Of course not, Biff. Now, I wouldn't want that to happen. Biff goes over and takes some candy from a jar as Marty watches him. Now, look. I'll finish those reports on up tonight, and I'll run them on over first thing tomorrow, all right?

Biff: Not too early. I sleep in Saturday. McFly, your shoe's untied. When George goes to tie it, Biff hits his face with his hand.

George (laughing): Oh.

Biff: Don't be so gullible, McFly.

George looked at Biff with anger.

Biff: Got the place fixed up nice, though, McFly. He goes into the fridge and takes a can of beer from it. I have your car towed all the way to your house and all you got for me is lite beer? He laughs, before seeing Marty again, this time standing in the hallway. What are you looking at, butthead? Say hi to your mom for me.

George looks at Biff with anger.

George: I know what you're going to say, Son, and you're right. You're right. But Biff just happens to be my supervisor, (we hear a car driving away) and I'm afraid I'm just not very good at confrontations.

"Supervisor? I believe it's the other way around, actually." George said.

Marty didn't say anything.

Marty: But the car, Dad. I mean, he wrecked it. He totaled it. I needed that car tomorrow night, Dad. Do you have any idea how important this was to me? Do you have any clue?

George: I know, and all I can say is, I'm… I'm sorry. The scene cuts to later in the kitchen as George is pouring peanut brittle into a bowl. Believe me, Marty, you're better off without having to worry about all the aggravation and headaches of playing at that dance.

Dave McFly (watching TV): He's absolutely right, Marty. The last thing you need is headaches.

"Am I wearing a Burger King uniform? Oh, God." Dave said.

Marty looked away, knowing that he and his family lived terrible lives before he changed the past. Maybe it is for the better that I changed the past. Biff is working for Dad, and everybody has a well-paying job. he thought.

George and Dave start laughing at a scene on the TV, as in the kitchen, an overweight Lorraine Baines-McFly is drinking scotch while taking a cake into the living room.

"Why am I so fat?!" Lorraine exclaimed disgustedly.

Marty looked away from the screen.

Lorraine: Kids, we're going to have to eat this cake by ourselves. Your Uncle Joey didn't make parole again. She puts the cake on the table. She sighs. I think it would be nice if you all dropped him a line.

Marty: Uncle "Jailbird" Joey?

Dave: He's your brother, Mom.

Linda McFly: Yeah. I think it's a major embarrassment, having an uncle in prison.

Marty sighed.

Lorraine: We all make mistakes in life, children?

Dave: Goddamn it. I'm late

Lorraine: David, watch your mouth! You come here and kiss your mother before you go. Come here.

Dave: Come on, Mom. Make it fast. I'll miss my bus. He kisses her on the cheek. See you later, Pop. Time to change that oil.

George laughs as he leaves.

Linda: Hey, Marty. I'm not your answering service. While you were outside pouting over the car, Jennifer Parker called you twice.

Lorraine smiled. She liked Jennifer. The girl reminded her of herself when she was her age.

Lorraine: I don't like her, Marty. Any girl who calls up a boy is just asking for trouble.

"I like her." Lorraine smiled at the girl.

Linda: Oh, Mother, there's nothing wrong with calling a boy.

Lorraine: I think it's terrible. Girls chasing boys. When I was your age, I never chased a boy or called a boy or sat in a parked car with a boy.

Marty smirked, knowing she did all that stuff when he was with her in 1955.

Linda: Then how am I supposed to ever meet anybody?

Lorraine: Well, it'll just happen. Like the way I met your father.

Linda: That was so stupid. Grandpa hit him with the car.

That's not how it happened. Lorraine thought.

Lorraine: It was meant to be. Anyway, if Grandpa hadn't hit him, then none of you would have been born.

Linda: Yeah, well. I still don't understand what Dad was doing in the middle of the street.

Lorraine: What was it, George? Bird-watching?

Marty looked away, knowing his Dad was a Peeping Tom in 1955.

George: What, Lorraine? What?

Lorraine pours some vodka in her glass.

Lorraine looked away, not wanting to watch her overweight, alcoholic self anymore.

Lorraine: Anyway, your Grandpa hit him with the car and brought him into the house. He seemed so helpless, like a little lost puppy, and my heart just went out to him.

Linda: Yeah, Mom, we know. You've told us this story a million times. You felt sorry for him, so you decided to go with him to the Fish Under the Sea dance.

Lorraine: No. It was the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. Our first date. I'll never forget it. It was the night of that terrible thunderstorm, remember, George? George isn't paying attention to her, he is busy watching his show. Your father kissed me for the very first time on that dance floor. It was then that I realized that I was going to spend the rest of my life with him. George laughs while watching the TV as the scene ends.

And there it is. In the next chapter, we will go over Marty traveling to 1955, called "1955".
