Episode 20: Pups Save The Lighthouse! Finding Purpose for PAW Patrol Purple!
October 29th, 2029
Today had been a long day for Alex and Ben. The wolf had been subjected to several trials and tasks in order for Ben to try and get a lock on what Alex's talent for the PAW Patrol was going to be. They had tried several things- they tried all six of the main PAW Patrol member traits, and other talents such as trucking, tracking, and other specialties.
Alex had gotten really interested in electricity, having found some books on it at the Adventure Bay Library and the Lookout tower. The wolf was really into it, but he wasn't sure how to tell Ben about his newfound passion. He mentioned it to Rocky, who was ecstatic about it. "You like electricity?! Maybe you could be an electrician, Alex!" Rocky suggested as he and Alex worked on the base of a vehicle.
"What's an electrician?" Alex asked his mixed breed pal.
"An electrician is someone who maintains and installs electrical equipment. They operate, maintain, and repair devices with wiring!" Rocky explained. Alex's tail started to wag. "I don't know what all of those words mean, but I do like fixing things! Thanks Rocky!" Alex exclaimed happily.
The two shared a long talk about the intricacies and details of such a job, which only further confirmed Alex's interest and commitment to the idea. The next creature that Alex told about his new interest was Zuma. The white wolf cub ran up to Zuma, bouncing up and down with excitement. "Zuma, Zuma, Zuma!" Alex panted.
Zuma grinned as he waved hi with his paw. "Yo dude! What's up, Alex?" Zuma greeted his pal.
"I think I found out what I'm good at! Lightbulbs! And electricity! And electrician stuff!" Alex yelled out enthusiastically.
Zuma's tail started to wag too. "Duuuude, weally? That's awesome!" Zuma cheered, tackling Alex and beginning to play fight with the wolf cub.
The two were roughed up a little when they were done. It was getting late in the day, and they were planning on having a sleep-out under the stars tonight. The sun was setting… Currently the pups were all having fun while Ben sat down and enjoyed his ice water. Rocky and Rubble were playing tug of war with a pillow while Marshall, Alex, and Skye watched. Zuma was eating snacks while watching the spectacle, and Chase was attempting to get his sleeping mat rolled out. "I love sleeping under the stars!" Chase exclaimed as he tried to get his mat rolled out.
Zuma grinned as he saw he was down to the very last pup treat. "Last biscuit, who wants it?" Zuma called out. Marshall immediately let go of the pillow, which sent Rubble flying.
"I DO! I DO!" Marshall squealed.
"Got it!" Chase proudly said as his mat finally was flattened out and was not rolling back up… then Rubble collided with Chase and ended up trapping the pup inside the mat, getting him all rolled up in it.
"Sorry Chase!" Rubble apologized.
The pups all laughed at this as the sun went down over the ocean, the skies turning from orange to purple. Alex then saw something which got him worried. "The lighthouse!" Alex yelped.
The massive beam of light that usually shone from the top of Seal Island's lighthouse was gone. This caused worried murmurs from the rest of the group, including Ben. "That's not good… the Seal Island Lighthouse provides safe passage to ships that pass by during the night." Ben mused.
"That's tewwible!" Zuma gasped.
"How will the ships see if there isn't any light coming from the lighthouse?" Chase asked.
Ben stood up and struck a pose. "Looks like our evening under the stars might have to wait! PAW Patrol-" Ben started to say.
All of a sudden, Ryder's voice came across their pup tags and communicators. "PAW Patrol, to the Lookout!" The seventeen year old boy cried out.
"Ryder's calling!" Everyone shouted, before heading inside the tower and to the elevator.
Skye and Marshall dropped the pillow that they were playing tug of war with, causing feathers to fly everywhere. One of them landed on Chase's nose, and the dog crawled after them inchworm time, Chase was the last one in, probably because he was wrapped up tightly in a sleeping bag. "Hey Marshall, you're not last this time!" Skye giggled.
The dalmatian spat out some feathers, and then giggled. Everyone laughed as the elevator began to rise up, stopping at the halfway point to dress the pups in their outfits. The arms also helped free Chase from his sleeping bag prison before reaching the top of the Lookout Tower, where the glass doors slid open and everyone leapt out. "PAW Patrol, ready for action, Ryder, sir!" Chase reported.
"PAW Patrol, we have an emergency. A thick fog is coming across the bay. Captain Turbot is stuck at sea, and the lighthouse light is out. There's a cruise ship that's scheduled to pass by Seal Island in exactly fifty-five minutes from now. If we don't fix the light, the cruise ship could hit Seal Island and capsize! We have to act fast. Zuma, you'll ride Chase across the water on your hovercraft. Chase, I need you and your flashlight to serve as the lighthouse light until the captain can get it fixed." Ryder instructed.
"Chase is on the case, Ryder, sir!" Chase barked out.
"Let's dive in!" Zuma yipped. "Ben, you'll stay here with the pups and try to keep them awake. Alright! PAW Patrol is on a roll" Ryder said, before exclaiming his catchphrase and sliding down the pole. Alex knew this was his chance, so he slid down the slide right behind Chase and got in Zuma's hovercraft along with Chase.
"Alex!? What are you doing here!?" Chase gasped as the wolf cub landed in the hovercraft. "I'm going to help. I know my way around electrical stuff!" Alex determinedly said. There was barely enough room for him to squeeze in with Chase at the back of the hovercraft.
"Darn it. I had a new amphibious mode I installed on my motorcycle recently." Ben pouted as he watched the duo of vehicles recede into the distance.
Marshall yawned, beginning to grow tired. "Marshall, we can't fall asleep just yet! Ryder might need us! Let's play Marco Polo." Skye suggested.
Meanwhile, the three pups and Ryder rode out to sea on their vehicles. As they drove out on the ocean, they were blocked by Wally the Walrus. "Come on, Wally! Let us pass! We have to get the lighthouse light on!" Ryder protested.
The walrus simply barked innocently in response. "We don't have time for this!" Alex growled, getting angry at the walrus walling them. Giving into his primal instincts, he let out a massive snarl that echoed across the bay. Wally squealed in fear and dove underwater to swim away.
"Okay… that works. Don't do that again unless we really need to, Alex. Now let's go, we're almost at the island!" Ryder said. The group drove up to the island and dismounted their vehicles before heading up to the lighthouse. Unfortunately, the door was locked. Ryder saw the ship in the distance.
"The door's locked, and the ship is almost here! We have to hurry!" Ryder gasped.
Alex spotted a window and pointed it out to them. "Window!" Alex roared.
"That's it! We'll use the window to get inside! Chase, shoot your net on the side of the lighthouse wall, just below the window." Ryder instructed.
"I'm on it, sir! RAWR!" Chase barked, shooting out his net and attaching it to the side of the lighthouse.
Ryder climbed up the window and opened it up, before running to the lighthouse door and opening it from the inside. The three pups ran up the stairwell to the lighthouse top, where they heard the radio of the lighthouse start to go off. "Seal Island Lighthouse! Come in, lighthouse! This is the captain of the cruise ship Princess Maria. We can't see your light. Over!" The radio transmission yelled out.
Ryder nodded to Chase for him to turn on his flashlight. "This is Seal Island Lighthouse, captain! Our light is going on… NOW!" Ryder exclaimed, giving Chase the signal.
The German Shepherd woofed and activated his spotlight, which shone down on the Princess Maria ship. The radio static crackled as the ship transmitted its response. "WE CAN SEE YOU, SEAL ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE! Say, you sound much younger than our usual lighthouse correspondent. May I inquire what your name is, and what might have happened to Captain Turbot?" The captain asked.
"This is Ryder of the PAW Patrol! We had to fill in for Captain Turbot when the Lighthouse went out and he got lost in the fog." Ryder answered.
"Well, Ryder of the PAW Patrol, thank you for helping guide us to safety! The Princess Maria salutes you for your help! I will certainly speak about this to my friends. Over and out!" The captain gratefully said before ending the communication. The three pups cheered as the ship turned away from the island, meaning that they would safely pass through Adventure Bay's oceans.
About an hour later, Captain Turbot arrived on the island. Racing up the stairs, Captain Turbot got to the top of the lighthouse. "Zuma, Chase, Alex, you did an amazing job! You're such good puppies!" The captain exclaimed, giving the three pups head scratches.
"Ooooooooh yeah!" Alex squealed.
The captain pulled out a lightbulb to screw in as a replacement as he put some shades over his eyes. "Let's do this!" Captain Turbot yelled out as he put the lightbulb in. The lighthouse, however, did not come back on. Captain Turbot scratched his head in confusion. "I thought that would work… what's going on?" The sailor mused.
Alex pawed at the maintenance panel, prying it open to see some wires had gotten loose. "The wires are frayed!" The wolf cub shouted.
"Oh, that explains it! Wow, Alex. I never would have thought of that." Captain Turbot said.
He grabbed some spare wires and gave it to the wolf, who pawed at the loose wires and switched them out with the new ones Captain Turbot had given.
Ryder was amazed with how Alex was able to swap the wires out, how he knew his way around the electronics. "Wow, Alex. Where did you learn about that?" Ryder asked.
"Diagrams and pictures and the internet!" Alex proudly said as Captain Turbot screwed the lightbulb back in and powered it on.
"Well Captain, whenever you're in trouble, just yelp for help!" Alex then announced.
He, Ryder, Chase, and Zuma went back to the Lookout, where Ben's eyelids were drooping as he and the pups watched the Apollo Super Pup Movie. Marshall was snoring, and Skye's eyes were fluttering open and shut. When Ryder, Alex, Chase, and Zuma came into view, though, the pups woke up and had a sudden burst of energy.
"Ryder! What happened?!" Rocky asked excitedly, tail wagging.
"We stayed up all night waiting, in case you needed us!" Marshall told them, scratching his ear.
"We couldn't have saved the lighthouse without Alex. We finally found his purpose! I'll go get some sleep-out snacks so I can tell you all about it." Ryder told them.
Ben put down his computer screen as the movie was rolling its credits now. He laid down on his sleeping bag, and dozed off. The pups did the same, so when Ryder got back, everyone was sleeping. Ryder giggled as he placed bowls next to all of the dozing pups before turning in for the night himself.
The next morning, Ryder woke up early and got to work on designing the gear for their newest member. Their skills might not be needed very often, but it'll be useful for when they do end up being necessary. At lunchtime, when Ben and everyone were awake, Ryder called them to the Lookout. "Pups, I have a very special announcement for you all. We have a new member of the PAW Patrol!" Ryder proclaimed.
Ben scratched his head in confusion, as he hadn't been told about this. "Huh? Who?" Ben asked.
Ryder walked up to Alex and wrapped a pup collar around him, complete with his own tag. "Alex, for his proficiency in electrical components and knowledge, as well as helping save the lighthouse, I'm naming you our electrician! PAW Patrol Purple!" Ryder exclaimed.
"Light or dark, I've got the spark!" Alex cried out. Everyone cheered and started to barrage Alex with questions. The future was looking bright for the PAW Patrol…
