UltimateDavid: I feel like I've had to answer this before… oh wait, I did. Kiryu was made leader of Team Satisfaction for a reason, and unlike Crow and the others, he's the only one who changed his deck. Even more, Kiryu would have knowledge of his tactics and deck strategies. That's A.
B, he's only had one duel since the story started, and it was against Kiryu.
C, the anime has a different meta than the tcg/ocg. Besides, the Infernity deck was just as good if not better. Unlike BW, Infernity could put up triple Trishula.
Neo-Warkid: I assure you that giving Aki what is owed to her was one of the reasons this story exists. Also, falling unconscious? Is that what happened in a different one?
Yes, there are plans to give her an Arcadia Movement arc, and I was aware of Crow's altered fate as well. But I'm keeping him around because Crow is still a good character. He just shouldn't have taken over everyone's screen time.
Chapter 8 – Showdown At Old Momentum Part 1: The Destiny Guided by Momentum
An explosion goes off on the side of the tower, causing it to stop in its tracks and tilt.
"What?!" Aki shouts looking up in shock. Everyone's in shock, a strong wind blowing their way.
"What just happened?!" asks Lua, being sort of slow to the uptake.
"Someone must have sabotaged the tower!" Yusei realizes, gritting his teeth in anger. He becomes more enraged when he thinks about the only person who could have.
Two D-Wheels can be heard making their way to the twilit scene. "Yusei!"
"Jack! Crow!" Yusei says seeing his friends arrive.
"Yusei." Crow looks over at Aki, watching the girl adjust the power adapter in her hair. "You must be Aki Izayoi. But it looks like you can't seal the tower."
"I tried, but then this happened," Aki replies, looking over at the tower. "Rudger knew what we had to do, and planned this ahead of time."
Jack angrily pounds his fist into his Wheel of Fortune. It's as if everything they've done was just a waste. "That son of a bitch…"
"Maybe there's a way we can fix it!" Mikage suggests, taking out her electronic notepad. "If I can study the schematics we could probably-"
A hand reaches out and grabs hers, the grip causing her to drop the item. As it cracks against the floor, Mikage's hand is wretched behind her back.
"Mikage!" shouts Jack as everyone faces her. There, they see Ushio has her in his grasp. "What are you doing, you oof?!"
Yusei then notices his right arm. It's glowing purple. "No. That's not Ushio right now." The twins step away from him.
"Yusei, Signers, congratulations. You've taken out the Dark Signers protecting the towers, but the Gate is still open. So sad."
"All because of you, Rudger!" Yusei shouts, knowing who's behind this.
Through Ushio, the man smiles. "Yusei, do you want to know the truth about your father? Do you want to put an end to this never-ending nightmare your family has caused? Then come to Old Momentum. But hurry; when the sun sets, it'll be too late."
The Signer team watches as a spider falls off of Ushio.
"Looks like this is it," speaks Yusei as he heads to his D-Wheel.
"Yusei, wait! It might be a trap!" Luca tells him.
"Of course, it is, but we can't just stop. Rudger has to be stopped, otherwise, we can't rescue Martha, Rally, and the rest." His words bring an air of understanding. They can't let this go after all.
Mounting his vehicle, Yusei throws on his helmet before driving off. Everyone returns to their machines to follow after. The sky becomes darker as they travel.
Elsewhere…
Inside the dark room, all of the candles have blown out. There is no one present in the area. A bunch of cards rest on the floor. A lone man walks among the cards, his face hooded by the darkness.
He raises his left hand, clenching it into a fist. Many forms move in the darkness, all of them sluggish and drunk almost.
Later…
After a lengthy drive through a destroyed city, which happened prior to all of this chaos, eventually, the group reaches the giant crater in the ground leading to Old Momentum. The sun is already coming down. But, that's the least of their worries. Once parked, the group looks around for an entrance.
"Rudger should be inside somewhere. Everyone, be careful," Yusei warns everyone.
"Hmph. There's no need for warnings. When we came to defeat the Dark Signers, we really meant him!" Jack declares while staring at the entrance.
"Hey, look at that!" Lua says while pointing over at a second entrance to down below. There sits one of the armored helicopters that came earlier without their knowledge. Strangely, the other one is missing.
"Is that…" Crow begins.
"It is," Mikage answers while looking. "This is one of the vehicles used by Security's SWAT branch. But, why is it here?"
While that does take his attention, Yusei is more focused on Rudger at the moment than Security. But, if Mikage isn't aware of what they could be doing here, then maybe Goodwin is up to something. "Let's go that way then. It's possible it leads to a secret entrance."
The group moves to the location of the giant entrance. Once there, Crow spots a panel glowing red. He places a hand on it, causing it to turn green. This allows the door to rise, opening the path to them.
The Signer group is immediately met with opposition, in the form of armed Security soldiers toting assault rifles. Each one stands and stares at our heroes.
"Security?" Crow says in surprise, almost getting a heart attack.
The unstable soldiers aim their weapons, as if ready to shoot. Unable to defend against bullets, the crew steps back. Lua hides Luca behind him while Ushio and Yusei protect them. Mikage says, "Stop! What are you doing?"
Both Crow and Yusei immediately notice the glowing marks on their arms. The former asks if that's what he thinks it is, and the latter confirms. "Rudger."
"Did you really think it'd be that easy?" Rudger speaks through the sergeant of the soldiers. "Now that you're all together, I can easily get rid of all of my problems."
"Always with the cheap shots, Rudger!" Yusei shouts in anger.
Being near the back of the group, Aki comes up with an idea. She secretly activates her duel disk, drawing a card without anyone seeing her. 'It's risky, but it's our only option. Please.'
"I always knew I would have to settle things with you, so let's put an end to this, Yusei." They prepare to fire.
"Rose Blizzard, activate!" Aki plays her trap card, causing a blizzard of rose petals to appear in their area. The group shield against the powerful storm, feeling the wind blowing them and their clothes.
Yusei, Jack, Crow, and Ushio take this moment to rush in and assault the soldiers, knocking their rifles aside. Next step, disabling them with punches and kicks. After flipping the sergeant over and punching his lights out, Yusei rushes inside. Anger fueling his movements, the Signer makes his way inside ignoring the one cut he got from Aki's trap card.
His friends call out to him as he leaves, unable to due to the remaining soldiers still blocking their paths. Jack and Aki pursue after him.
Inside, Yusei finds nothing but complete darkness. The only light he seems to find comes from the cracks and openings leading to the surface. In the darkroom he's passing through, he steps on rocks and metal before moving on.
He feels the wind moving in a different direction before heading that way.
"Yusei!" Aki calls out as she searches for him.
Jack walks by her as they reach the room Yusei has left. "This must be Momentum's research facility."
He steps on something that cracks, before removing his foot to look down at it. He picks it up, seeing that it's a picture frame. He wipes off the broken glass and looks at it, seeing a picture of a man and his wife with their child. "This is…"
Aki examines the picture, immediately noticing something about the adult male. "Huh. That's a familiar hairstyle."
"These are Yusei's parents," Jack realizes, staring at the photo in his hand.
With Yusei, he eventually reaches a bridge. It's flimsy, made of wood, rope, and steel, and hovers over complete darkness. Narrowing his eyes, Yusei steps over to walk to the other side. He stops, however, at the sound of footsteps coming from the other end.
There he stands, hooded by his black and red cloak, Rudger Goodwin.
"Rudger."
The Dark Signer leader laughs. "Welcome, Yusei. Did you have fun shoving your best friend back into hell?"
"Any hatred between me and Kiryu was unfounded. You've just been manipulating all of their circumstances and misunderstandings in order to get what you want!"
"Oh, it was no misunderstanding." Rudger removes his hood. "It was fate that you would eventually risk your lives hating one another from the minute you were born. Demak's plight, Kiryu's betrayal, Carly's misfortune, Bomber's grief, and Misty's revenge; all of these were planned by fate. You disperse these fireworks painted with hatred and sorrow to turn the Momentum of Destruction!
"Just like with Professor Fudo and myself!" While that surprises Yusei, what really gets to him is when Rudger lifts his left arm and turns something on it before pulling. This self-destructs an item below them, and the brilliant light of Momentum illuminates the darkness.
Elsewhere in the facility, Aki and Jack are shaken by the sudden power-up of the device.
As the energy of Momentum spins, Yusei keeps his eyes on the Dark Signer. "Beautiful, isn't it? This is the door of new possibilities that Fudo and I discovered seventeen years ago. Beyond this light lies the power to change the world. Soon, this light will flood the world."
"And the sacrifices behind it?!" he shouts, thinking about Martha and Rally.
"When it comes to science, risks are a part of the process. You can't be afraid of slight sacrifices before new possibilities!" Rudger comes closer to the center of the bridge, nearing Yusei.
"Slight?!"
"Yusei, humans are insignificant in comparison to fate. Compared to the gods that rule over life, an individual's life disappears like dust. Take this light for instance; Momentum is alive, it is fate itself! It engulfed my destiny along with your father's destiny to garner life!"
Having heard enough, Yusei shouts, "You're insane! I won't let you have your way any longer!"
"I'll bury you in this light as well." Both of them activate their Duel Disks, slotting their decks inside. Their marks shine brightly as the spider geoglyph forms above ground. At the same time, the possessed men also fall down, their marks disappearing.
"DUEL!" Both players draw their cards and raise them high.
Yusei Fudo: 4000
Rudger Goodwin: 4000
Rudger draws for his turn. "Since you started in our last duel, I will begin this time. I summon Crawler Spider in defense mode."
Appearing to the field is an eight-legged violet and red arachnid the size of a school bus. This spider also has steel pincers for mandibles and ten eyes.
Crawler Spider: 1200/1900 (4)
"I'll set one card facedown and end my turn."
Yusei draws for his turn. Rudger has two cards on the field, and four in his hand. There's a good chance one of them is for bringing out his Earthbound God. This feels like a trap, but he won't be deterred.
So to begin, he reveals his card. "By sending Level Eater to the graveyard, I can special summon Quick Synchron from my hand." Appearing to the field now is a Synchron monster, this one being a Western gunman.
Quick Synchron: 700/1400 (5) Tuner
"By targeting Quick Synchron, Level Eater will steal one of Quick's levels to special summon itself." Level Eater passes through Quick to appear on the field, revealed to be a ladybug of a monster.
Level Stealer: 600/0 (1)
"So eager to perform your Synchro Summon? I activate the effect of Spider Gardna in my hand." Another spider lands on the field next to Crawler, this one having large shields for its front legs. It also has a smaller spider on top of it, holding a guide flag.
Spider Gardna: 0/2500 (5)
"Spider Gardna can be special summoned when my opponent special summons twice in a turn. As long as it remains on the field, you can't attack anything but it."
'So, that's his plan. But, it won't work.' "From my hand, I normal summon Tuning Supporter." A tiny little machine guy appears, giving a thumbs up.
Tuning Supporter: 100/100 (1)
"Tuning Supporter can become a level 2 monster if necessary, and Quick Synchron can be any Synchron I require for a Synchro Summon." A roulette forms before the latter, who shoots at his intended target. Nitro Synchron.
"I'll tune my level 4 Quick Synchron with my level 2 Tuning Supporter and my level 1 Level Eater." Quick shoots four bullets before disappearing, each one turning into rings that pass through Yusei's monsters. They become three stars before the Synchro is performed. "Clustering feelings will become a new force! Become the path its light shines upon! Synchro Summon!"
Yusei's monster becomes a green and dark blue warrior with complex fingers and a power park behind it like a hornet's abdomen. "Blaze on, Nitro Warrior!"
Nitro Warrior: 2800/1800 (7)
"When Tuning Supporter is used as a Synchro Material, I can draw one card." Yusei draws from his deck. "Go, Nitro Warrior! Attack Spider Gardna!"
Using its jetpack tail, the warrior launches forward with its fists becoming energy constructs. It slugs Gardna, before giving an uppercut. The spider flies upward before exploding. "Nitro Warrior's effect!"
As he explains Nitro Warrior's effect to attack defense monsters, Aki is traveling through the caverns of the dark room. She hears the explosion of Spider Gardna and heads in that direction. That is how she arrives just in time to see Nitro Warrior smashing Crawler Spider into bug guts. The remains splatter and hit Rudger, sending him back a bit.
Rudger: 2400
"Got a good hit in, did you?" Rudger brushes himself off. "But, you've fallen into my net. Gardna's effect!"
From a dimension connecting to the graveyard, Gardna shoots out webbing at Nitro, switching it to defense mode. "At the end of the Battle Phase it's destroyed, all monsters you control are switched to defense. And now, Crawler's effect."
The aforementioned spider crawls from the cemetery to appear before Rudger. "Once per duel, if Crawler is in the graveyard and a monster position is switched by a card effect, I can special summon it and one Spider monster in my graveyard." Gardna gets pulled up by Crawler's webbing.
"I'll set one card and end my turn." Feeling everything he did was reversed, Yusei concludes leaving Rudger to do what he needs to.
"Yusei!" The shooting star of Satellite looks behind him to see Aki approaching.
"Don't come further!"
Rudger laughs before he draws his card. "Welcome, said the spider to the fly. You're just in time to see my feast. By targeting Crawler, I activate Insect Imitation!"
The spider begins molting, turning into something new. "I'll release Crawler to summon the Dark Tuner Spider Cocoon!"
The Dark Tuner Spider Cocoon appears on the field after breaking free of Crawler. Seeing it, Yusei goes on edge. "Is this where you summon your Underground Arachne? How do you expect to do that without the appropriate level?"
"Don't rush, Yusei. There are means to this. I shall perform a Dark Tuning using Spider Cocoon and Spider Gardna!" The spider releases its stars and explodes, allowing them to enter Gardna. The guard spider shrieks in pain as all of the stars collide with one another. As a result, the spider shatters to pieces as a portal opens up just above Rudger and Yusei.
"What the? That's not right! If you subtract 5 from 5, you get-"
"That's right. Zero." The spiraling energy forms into a single crown, floating above the field. This black and purple crown gives an ooze-like appearance. "Dark Synchro! Come up, Damnation Road Line – Tunnel Undercrown!"
Tunnel: 0/0 (0) DARK Tuner
"A Dark Tuner Synchro monster?" Aki asks when she sees it, looking up at the crown. It looks more like a road tunnel.
"Wait… isn't this like-" Yusei pauses when he recognizes the appearance of the monster. It looks just like the Savior Dragon he held. Then, that means… "You're about to-"
"You're not the only one given a boost of help from their god. Since you're so familiar with handling the Earthbound Gods, the ultimate soldier would be needed."
"With no monsters on the field?"
"There's something I have." He presses a button, activating the only face-down card he has. "Dark Tune Sacrifice."
His trap card shows an image of a man being sacrificed on an altar, mutilated in a way that should not be drawn on a card. It's a gruesome sight, but what happens next is a big thing. He reveals a card from his deck.
"Earthbound God Uru?!"
"Dark Tune Sacrifice banishes one Earthbound God; in exchange, I can special summon one Dark Sacrifice Token with the same level and type." As Uru disappears, a human-sized spider appears on the field below the tunnel under crown.

"All the conditions are set. Undercrown can only be used as a Synchro Material for a Dark Tuning, and the levels of the materials used are reversed."

"A negative ten Dark Synchro!" Aki realizes.
"I shall now perform a Dark Tuning with Undercrown and Dark Sacrifice Token!" The power of darkness forms around the crown as it spirals around the token. With that, the token spider crawls skyward through the now-expanding tunnel. All ten stars form around the zenith of the tunnel, which shows a dark gateway forming.
From the gateway the token enters through, it explodes. Dark matter splatters across Rudger, making him disappear. "In the pitch-black hellscape, the king of the underworld shall rise; to turn the world into his prison! DARK SYNCHRO!"
"What's this?!" Yusei looks around before his eyes glance upward.
That's where he sees him; a towering flaming crimson black spider the size of an Earthbound God hangs from a web above the bridge. A woman's top half sticks out from the back of the spider, her chest covered by a tattered kimono. Rudger is growing off the top of the demon woman a la Yami Marik. "Drag All to Hell, Underworld Arachne!"
Underworld Arachne: 2500/3000 (-10)
'It really is just like the Savior Dragon…' Yusei realizes, seeing he's merged just like he would with Savior Star Dragon.
"Underworld Arachne's effect," begins Rudger, his words distorted by the evil coursing through him, "allows me to destroy all defense-positioned monsters you control at once. And I can deal damage equal to their combined defense points."
Arachne cackles before sending threads from her fingers at Nitro Warrior. "No! That damage with its attack will overlap Yusei's life points!"
"Trap activate; Synchro Barrier!" Nitro Warrior shatters, forming a barrier over Yusei. "By releasing Nitro Warrior, I receive no damage this turn."
A little more than upset that he can't finish him off, he has something to work with still. He picks a card from his hand and sets it, before taking out one more card from his hand. "Here is my continuous magic card, Destiny Trigger."
Appearing now is a grim hand holding a trigger. "This card activates by sending the top card of my deck to the graveyard. Afterward, during your Draw Phase, should you draw a card matching the card type, your life points will be cut in half."
He ditches a card into his graveyard. "The card I sent was a trap card. Now, let's see you escape the spider's lair, Yusei."
"We shall!" Yusei draws for his turn, revealing it to be a monster card. As he does, he and Aki end up hearing new voices. He glances back to see Lua and Luca with Ushio making their way in.
Glad that they're safe, Yusei returns focus to the duel. Rudger is honestly his worst match-up. While he's dealt with Jack's aggressive duel style before, Rudger's spiders want him to stay on the defensive. He can't play like that. He'll have to go on the offensive.
"I will normal summon Synchron Explorer!" Yusei's card appears on the field, a circular machine red in color with a hollow opening on its chest.
Explorer: 0/700 (2)
"With its effect, I will special summon Quick Synchron!" The all-purpose Synchron makes a return. It then immediately fires a shot at the roulette, sniping Turbo Synchron.
"And finally, I will summon Level Stealer from the graveyard!" The little ladybug appears after gobbling up one of Quick's stars. With his at level 4, Yusei is ready. He tunes Synchron Explorer with Quick Synchron.
"Gathering stars weave a greater force! Become the path its light shines upon! Synchro Summon!" Arriving in light is the red engine warrior with the makeshift pompadour. The sound of revving takes off as steam emits. "Rev it up, Turbo Warrior!"
Turbo Warrior: 2500/1500 (6)
"Turbo Warrior, attack Underworld Arachne!" Thrusting its arms out, Turbo Warrior flies upward.
"What nonsense is this?! Underworld Arachne's attack power is greater!"
"From my hand, I activate Rush Warrior's Effect!" Yusei ditches a card into his graveyard. From that, a warrior looking like an upgraded Speed Warrior rushes in as a phantom possessing Turbo Warrior. "Turbo Warrior's attack power will double for one battle!"
Turbo Warrior: 5000
"Accel Slash!" Arranging its right hand into a knife motion, it stabs the air releasing an energy hand to pierce Underworld Arachne.
The jorogumo raises her hand to block, the ripples of power messing with Rudger.
Rudger: 400
But, Underworld Arachne is still there. The Accel Slash has destroyed a little green spider forming a barrier over Underworld Arachne. Laughing, Rudger states, "Too bad. But, the card I sent to the graveyard off of Destiny Trigger was Life Thread. This little trap banishes itself to protect all of the Insects on my field. And if one of them was a Synchro Monster, I get to draw."
Angered, Yusei takes a look at his hand. With only two cards left, he needs to do away with that spider. Too bad it's a level negative, otherwise Turbo Warrior would have done more damage. "I'll set one card and end my turn."
Rudger draws for his turn, eyeing Yusei's field thinking of a way to do this. "Now, let's see how long you can hold off my attacks. I play the Field Magic, Spider Web."
Threads spread throughout the arena from atop Arachne, covering the entire field. Seeing it, Lua and Ushio get closer to Luca fearing an Earthbound God is close to coming.
"And, I will activate this magic card, Spider Bite." A spider slides down a web and attaches to Turbo Warrior, biting its neck. The venom spreads through its half-metal body forcing it to take a knee.
"Turbo Warrior!"
"Uwah! That's so gross!" Lua says looking at it.
"This Equip Magic card equips to a monster you control and switches it to defense mode. Your monster is then turned into an Insect." Turbo Warrior groans as it feels its body shift.
Turbo Warrior: 2500/0 (6)
"Underworld Arachne's effect!" The giant woman cackles before sending threads from its fingers at Turbo Warrior, turning it into a cocoon. One of its legs then shoots out and pierces the cocoon, causing it to explode. The damage rebounds on Yusei, knocking him back against the bridge a little.
Yusei: 2500
"Ho? You left Level Stealer in Attack Mode to avoid losing it to Arachne's effect. But that small amount of attack points won't stop a fly. Underworld Arachne, attack!" The woman opens her mouths, exposing mandibles, and fires threads coated purple at Level Stealer.
"Trap card, Defense Draw!" Yusei's trap opens up. "This trap reduces any damage I would take to zero and allows me to draw one card!"
"I've got you now, Yusei," says Rudger, surprising his young opponent as he presses a button on his duel disk. "Counter Trap, Ground Wave! While I control a Field Spell, it negates a Magic and Trap card you control and destroys it!"
As Defense Draw disappears, Yusei curses before shielding himself. The threads strike the ladybug and shatter it, the explosion sending Yusei back. His head hits the bridge floor hard.
Yusei: 100
"YUSEI!"
End of Chapter…
Kei: With that, we can comfortably end this chapter. Next time, we conclude this duel. But, there's one more problem to be had. Can Yusei defeat Rudger? Will the Signers seal off the Door to Darkness? Is there someone reading this story that has never seen 5D's before? Find out next time!
