Chapter 2
Alex was worried, he had heard about Arizona's double loss and knew she'd be upset, how could she not be. A mother and her child both dying on her table would be devastating, if he knew his boss, she would be holding it together, trying to be a good man in a storm and as soon as she knew everyone else was okay, she would lose it, he wanted to be there for her when that happened. He owed her that, her list of friends had dwindled since Callie had gone so he wanted to step up, make up for his absence in the custody case, at least he would if he could find her. Truthfully he knew she hadn't been okay for a long time and was worried that every event would be enough to push her over the edge. Life wasn't fair, and for Robbins it had been one loss after another.
"Have you seen Robbins" he asked one of the nurses for the third time, this time she didn't even bother to reply instead glaring at him. Alex sighed, he had checked everywhere he could think of and yet his mentor remained AWOL. Another nurse walked over having overheard, she was dressed in surgical scrubs.
"She took Mr Jenkins into the relative's room but that was 10 minutes ago. I'm guessing it's a long conversation; I mean how do you tell a husband he has lost everything?" the nurse sympathized.
Alex wasn't listening, instead he was walking to the relative's room. Something inside him was screaming at him, that same thing that had forced him to seek her out on the first place was now screaming loudly at him.
He knocked, his ear at the door listening, trying to hear voices, to hear anything to stop him going inside, if she was genuinely trying to comfort a distraught husband and father he didn't want to interrupt. Hearing no sounds, he opened the door. Arizona was lying on the floor a puddle of blood around her head and a bruise to her left forehead. Her eyes were closed, she looked as white as a sheet, her leg had popped off and was lying at a 45-degree angle to where it should have been. Most concerningly was that she wasn't moving. Alex ran to her side, checking her breath relieved to feel it against his hand.
"I need help, get me a gurney and page Shepard" Alex screamed loudly, seeing one of the nurses pass the door, his hand at Arizona's neck taking a pulse relieved to find a strong one pulsating against his fingers. He moved her head to make sure her airway was open,
"Arizona," he said shaking her shoulder gently, and squeezing her trapezium muscle, there was no response, footsteps were running behind him, Meredith and Amelia arrived along with the nurse who had directed him here she'd brought a gurney.
"What happened?" Meredith asked,
"I don't know I found her here like this" Alex explained, watching as Amelia examined her pupils, whilst Meredith's hands found where the blood was coming from and put pressure on,
"Both are reactive, we should get her on the gurney get her to CT" Amelia ordered, stroking some of Arizona's hair out of her face.
"I got the obs machine" the nurse said, Alex could see her tag said Natalie, she quickly paced the blood pressure cuff, the pulse ox, did a temp and a blood sugar.
"BP 104/54, pulse 76 reg, sats 97% temp 36.7 BM 5.6 resps 12" the nurse reeled off,
"Great" Amelia said, they were all relatively normal, which in some ways was more worrying because it meant whatever was keeping her unconscious was most likely neurological.
Alex easily lifted her carefully placing her on the gurney, Meredith applied high flow O2, while Amelia called CT making sure there was space. She ordered Natalie to page Bailey to the scanner 911 knowing the chief would want to be updated.
"Let's go" she ordered. Alex pushed the trolley, Meredith and Amelia jogging either side.
They made it to the lift when Arizona groaned her hand moving to rub her head and pushing the oxygen off as she did so. Meredith gently captured her wrist holding it securely.
"Arizona, you're okay, can you open your eyes" Amelia ordered, she was rewarded with blue eyes opening, then closing groaning at the bright light.
"Great, do you know where you are?" she asked.
"Callie, where is Callie?" Arizona asked mumbling though her mask. She tried to take the oxygen off and sit up, but Alex pushed her down while Meredith secured the mask.
"Callie is New York" Alex said, Arizona glared at him, before she tried to turn her head, and groaning at the pain,
"Where's the truck?" she muttered again before falling back unconscious,
"At least her humor is intact" Meredith joked, as the lift opened, and they ran to CT. Bailey was waiting there having answered her page straight away. As she told the interns when you were paged 911 you ran. Seeing Arizona on the trolley the sheets stained red with blood under her head, she was pale and most worrying she was unconscious. Next to her Alex, Meredith and Amelia while to the casual observer appeared calm but to Miranda, she could tell they were worried and panicking slightly.
"What happened?" Bailey asked, Alex stopped to update her as Meredith and Amelia aided Arizona onto the CT scanner.
"I don't know I found her like this she was updating a relative, I think he might have attacked her" Alex guessed. "She came around briefly but otherwise she has been unresponsive."
"I'll alert security" Bailey decided stepping into the scanner to use the phone.
Meredith and Amelia had just stepped out of the scanner and had pressed go on the machine; Amelia was seated tapping her fingers as she waited for the scans to load up.
They came up quickly, the technician knowing not to go slow today, Amelia sighed, as did the rest of the room, you didn't need to be a neurosurgeon to see the bleed, it was clear, bright white in and around her temporal and frontal lobes.
"A subarachnoid hemorrhage" Amelia diagnosed, as she flicked back through the scans trying to work out, how much of her friend's brain would be affected and whether she'd need surgery.
"We need to intubate, and place her in a coma, we need to relieve the pressure. It's in a tricky place, one small slip and she could lose everything that makes her Arizona" Amelia debated, turning her head to get a different view, "Do we know who her medical power of attorney is?" She questioned,
"It's not Callie, she changed it after the divorce, I guess April or Webber" Alex suggested,
"We need to find out, I need to take them through the options" Amelia said grimly, the options were bad and worse.
"We'll need to move fast" Meredith noted, her stint in neurosurgery giving her insight,
"You want to scrub in" Amelia offered, while normally she'd request a resident this was Robbins, she deserved the best.
Meredith's answer was cut off by Arizona seizing in the scanner, the alarms from the portable monitored bleeped loudly and flashed red. Everyone was on their feet running in.
"Get her out, Alex I need 4mg Lorazepam, Bailey intubation kit, Mer call the OR let them know we are on our way and prep and OR" Amelia ordered. The situation had worsened, there was now no longer time to get family consent, not if they wanted Arizona to live.
The team worked quickly moving her out the scanner, Alex gave the lorazepam and her seizure stopped.
"Let's move" Amelia ordered, she ran ahead scrubbing in as they shaved Arizona's hair and draped the surgical field. Meredith joined her moments later,
"Bore holes?" she questioned,
"No, with the seizures I think an open craniotomy is best" Amelia decided, "I'll try ligate the vessel stop the bleed"
"It's a lot riskier" Meredith noted. Amelia nodded there was no denying it. Still, she had to trust her instincts if she wanted to save her friend, she had so far and was now one of the top 10 neurosurgeons in the country today wasn't the day to ignore them.
"I know but it's our only option" she said confidently.
"No superhero pose?" Meredith asked as she scrubbed her hands. Everyone knew that Amelia did it before every surgery.
"I would but I don't think we have time" Amelia replied, her grey eyes meeting Meredith's conveying just how scared she was that she couldn't pull this off.
"You got this; I know you got this" Meredith told her confidently. Amelia gave her a grateful nod before putting on her game face and stepping into the OR. Quickly they were gowned and gloved,
"10 blade" Amelia said as the lifesaving surgery began.
