Chapter 3

"Anything?" Alex asked April as he stepped into the neuro ICU room that had become his second home, April shook her head no, her hands holding Arizona's. She'd been deep in prayer before he had come in but knew she'd been disturbed so many times, with every attending visiting Arizona any free time they had, it was rare the room was empty, especially at key times like lunch, Arizona's room the unofficial canteen now.

"No, Amelia said it could be anytime, she was only weaned off the vent this morning" she noted,

"I know but it's been 3 days" Alex moaned, 3 long days since he had found her on the floor of the relative's room.

"The brain is a fickle thing we don't know when she'll wake up" April reminded him, "we can only talk to her, make sure she knows were here and pray".

"Are you sure we shouldn't call Callie, let her know?" Alex asked again, he knew they only needed to pick up the phone and Callie would fly out instantly. They might be separated in distances but Alex and many others knew they still loved each other.

"You heard Webber, when she made him power of attorney she said no, Callie wasn't to know anything medical about her" April said feeling just as helpless as he was. "I mean she's going to be suspicious soon when Arizona doesn't call Sofia but until then…" she trailed off instead looking at her hand. If Callie called she wasn't sure what they would do or say, a lie of omission felt much better than actually not telling Callie the truth, although anything they did say would be suspicious.

"She squeezed my hand" she told Alex, "Arizona, can you hear me, open your eyes" she begged. They both watched as Arizona squeezed her hand again, this time she groaned, Alex ran to the door flagging the nearest nurse,

"Page Shepard" he ordered. The nurse nodded hurrying to the phone. He returned to see blue eyes looking at him puzzled,

"C…C" she tried to speak, appearing more confused when the words didn't flow as she expected, "Cal…lie" she managed to say,

"Callie?" April guessed; she was rewarded when Arizona nodded.

"We haven't told her" April explained, Arizona looked even more confused,

"B…b…b" she sighed obviously frustrated, "B…baby" she spat out,

"What?" April said just as confused, before remembering the pregnant patient Arizona had been operating on, "I'm sorry, he didn't make it" she explained sympathetically surprised when a look of utter devastation crossed Arizona's face.

"Hey, look who is awake!" She greeted Arizona using her pen torch to check her pupils, pleased when they both reacted, "What do you remember?"

"SSSS?" Arizona said, against stopping frustrated, "Ssjjjj" she shook her head, giving up, instead looking expectantly at the Doctors around her,

"You hit your head" Amelia said taking pity, "You have a large subarachnoid bleed that was affecting your Frontal and Parietal lobes, you had a seizure, we had to do a craniotomy, but we managed to stop the bleeding and replace your skull." Amelia explained, "I know your speech has been effected, we have no way of knowing if that is temporary or not" she said sympathetically.

Arizona took a few breaths each time trying to speak, getting more and more frustrated. She growled slightly,

"Bbbbb, Ccccclllll, Mmmkkkkk" she tried, everyone looked at each other confused. Arizona sighed, her eyes closing, she opened them again stubbornly, before they closed her exhaustion winning.

"She'll be sleeping a lot" Amelia advised. Suddenly everyone's bleeps went off, 9-11 the pit, they exchanged worried glances, but rule one of Grey Sloan, when paged 9-11 you ran.

"She'll be okay" Amelia reassured them as they reached the lifts, "The nurses will be with her" she promised. They reached the pit; Owen was there ordering Cross to run to the blood bank and get all the O-Neg possible.

"What have we got?" Bailey asked just behind them.

"A mom had a seizure at the wheel plough into a class of elementary school pupils we have 30+ kids coming in with their frantic parents" he warned.

"What a day for Robbins to be down" Bailey moaned.

"Grey, Kepner, Wilson, Webber, Bailey, Jackson, Shepard I want you in the OR's they're bringing the worst cases in first triage and take them up, stabilization surgery only, Karev trauma 1, Riggs trauma 2, Pierce trauma 3, Edwards I need you on cubicles 4, 5, 6, DeLuca, 7, 8, 9, Warren I want you to set up the relative station, lets reunite the parents as quickly as we can, and I'll co-ordinate" Owen ordered, it was 1530 and he knew there was no way he was going to make it home tonight, the night was going to be long. Everyone went to their action stations, as the first of the blue lights approached, followed by another and another. Everyone braced taking a deep breath,

"Holly Miles 5 years old, open fracture tib/fib" the EMT said,

"Kepner" Owen ordered. April stepped forwards,

"Hello Holly" she greeted, helping the paramedics wheel her in,

One by one each attending was taken by a child up to the OR then to the trauma rooms and the cubicles as the hospital filled, Owen rotated making sure nobody was missed, that every child was being seen.

Several hours later Alex finished his third surgery of the night, it was 4am, over 12 hours since the first case had come in. He was exhausted but had one stop before he collapsed in an on-call room. Arriving at the neuro ICU he approached Arizona's room only to find it empty the bed made with clean sheets, the monitors all tidied up hanging neatly for the next patient. Arizona, her leg, and handbag missing.

"Where's Robbins?" he asked the nearest nurse as she approached the desk hoping she was just at CT, the nurse furrowed her brow in confusion checking the board,

"It says here room 4" she said,

"I know but she isn't there, when was she last checked on?" he asked, trying not to get angry.

"I don't know I'm on beds 5&6 tonight, its Sharon on bed 4" she said,

"Where is Sharon?" Alex questioned, the nurse shrugged, another nurse came over Alex could see her name tag said Skye.

"Sharon is in the ER, she did dual Peds and Adult nursing, so they called her down. She hasn't been here all shift."

"Who is looking after Robbins and where is she?" Alex shouted, letting his frustration take over.

"Robbins hasn't been there all shift, and her stuff was gone when we got here, I figured she'd been moved to the general ward" Skye said apologetically, "They moved a lot of patients when we were in handover, they thought that the PICU would overflow we were issued orders to transfer everyone well enough out. According to our handover she had woken up from her coma and wasn't requiring ICU support anymore" she explained, "I'd check the neuro ward."

"Page Shepard, and search the records, I want to know where she is?" he ordered his exhaustion gone.

Amelia appeared 10 minutes later, as did Bailey, Skye and Marianne had rung the wards and established Arizona hadn't been transferred, in fact it appeared she had wondered away.

"Robbins, have either of you seen Robbins she is AWOL?" Alex explained hoping one of them would have an explanation. They both appeared shocked,

"No, she was in her room, that was hours ago when I last came by" Amelia walked over checking the room and the bathroom verifying for herself that they were both empty, she'd been in the OR for the last 8 hours, saving the life of a 6-year-old boy.

"Call security, I want to see the CCTV" Bailey ordered.

"It's got to be a good sign if she walked out of the room, right?" Skye asked,

"That's if she did, Mr McRoy might have wanted to hide the evidence" Alex suggested his heart sinking, where was Arizona? Had she gone willingly? Was she okay? And most importantly, where they going to be able to find her?

Alex rubbed his eyes, his tiredness had now disappeared, like his friend.

Hope you liked it, i'm aiming for longer chapters,
