POKÉMON SUN & MOON
THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME
"Oh my goodness…" Wicke uttered in shock upon entering the bedroom, finding Calvin and Pyrrha carrying an unconscious Erika by her arms over their shoulders. Primarina, Lurantis and Sandslash watched worriedly as their trainer was brought to the bed, being gently laid down. Hau, Lillie, Gladion, Trent and Paige filed into the room from the teleporter pad along with their Pokémon, looking over at the Ketchum girl.
"Eri…" the former of the group uttered out worriedly.
"Pree…" Primarina moaned, approaching the bed to nuzzle her head against her trainer's.
"What happened?" Wicke asked immediately.
"Mother used Nebby's power and opened an Ultra Wormhole…" Lillie answered while glancing down ashamedly.
"And now it looks like this…" Gladion added, moving aside to reveal the new form of the Nebula Pokémon. The assistant approached it, adjusting her glasses to get a better look.
"We tried to stop Miss Lusamine…" Calvin chimed in, "but there were so many things we needed to deal with all at once…" he noted, remembering Guzma and Nihilego intervening.
"In the end, they all disappeared into the wormhole," Gladion finished, glancing back toward the sleeping Erika. Back in the collection room, she had screamed so many things that he himself wanted to say a long time ago. His mother truly was a monster.
"Erika got really mad and passed out from all the adrenaline… I think…" Pyrrha mentioned, worriedly looking over to her unconscious friend, "I wish…" she started to whimper out, sniffling as tears pricked her eyes, "I wish I could've done more to help…" she admitted sadly.
"In any case, what do we do now?" Trent asked of the group, "I mean… Lusamine said Ultra Wormholes were opening up all over Alola, right?" he inquired, "Maybe we should go try to help—"
"That won't be necessary, I think," Wicke interjected, getting his attention along with those of the others, "The energy readings that appeared after the wormhole here was closed vanished," she told the group, "It's likely that those wormholes are closed as well," she mentioned.
"But what if some Ultra Beasts got out?" Paige questioned worriedly.
"Yeah, it took the whole lot of us to stop that Nihilego the last time!" Hau pointed out, sounding quite panicked.
"Calm down," Gladion advised of them, "There're other strong trainers in Alola that can deal with them for the time being," he assured, "For now, we should all get some rest before tomorrow," he insisted of the group, walking away.
"Hey, Gladion!" Calvin called out.
"Shouldn't we figure out a way to go a find your mom?!" Trent questioned aloud. However, the blonde-haired boy didn't respond as he left the room, shutting the door behind him. A dreadful silence filled the room as everyone shared uncertain looks with each other. Lillie approached the stationary Nebby, cradling it in her hands.
"I…" she uttered, letting out a sigh, "Thank you for coming to help us…" she managed to say with gratitude, "I'm sorry that you've all gotten caught up in this…" she meekly apologized.
"No, it's no problem at all!" Calvin assured as he waved his hands.
"Sehh rawr!" Incineroar agreed, holding up her own hands like her trainer.
"We'd all say the same thing, Lillie," Paige promised as she approached, "I'm sure Erika would, too," she added firmly. The blonde-haired girl looked back at the sleeping Ketchum girl, knowing that she had done so much to try and help her during those final few moments. And yet, the most vivid memories she had during the whole ordeal were when Erika attacked Lusamine without a second thought.
"Would any of you mind if I stayed with Erika for now?" she asked of the group, getting their attentions, "I… want to make sure I thank her, too," she told them, looking over at the Ketchum girl.
"Oh, uh, sure!" Calvin responded with a stutter.
"In that case, I'll prepare some of the guest rooms for the rest of you," Wicke decided, heading off.
"We should go and find Gladion, too!" Hau insisted of the others.
"Yeah," Trent agreed with a nod. Everyone started to file out from the room, with some returning their Pokémon to their respective Poké Balls. Pyrrha glanced back worriedly at her friend as she remained asleep on the bed, breathing normally. With a sad sigh, she was the last one to leave before the doors shut.
"Luraahhh…" Lurantis moaned out, poking at her trainer to try and wake her up. Sandslash attempted to do the same with his claws, only for Lillie to step out in front of him.
"We should let her wake up on her own," she insisted, sitting down upon the bed beside Erika, looking over at her sadly. When she had apologized earlier before passing out, she didn't seem to be directing it towards anyone in room. Though curious as to why, all Lillie truly cared about was making sure that her friend was okay.
OPENING
Insert "Eden Through the Rough" by Takanori Nishikawa
Opens with both Calvin and Erika throwing on their respective caps as they run down a rainy road together. The Pokémon logo then appears, followed by 'The Challenge of a Lifetime' being written in a glowing, rainy blue underneath it.
We continue with Calvin observing his Z-Crystal collection as his Pokémon look on with him. They then take a look ahead down the road, seeing the likes of Team Skull, Gladion, Plumeria, and finally Guzma ahead of them. Calvin hurries forward alongside his Pokémon, all while leaving his twin sister behind.
She's standing out in the rain by herself, crying as she feels the shadows of her father and older sister cast over her, making her feel like she's inadequate. It isn't until Starbright hops into her arms and wipes away a tear that she starts to smile, seeing her Pokémon gather alongside her.
As the opening continues, we get various shots of Sina and Dexio at their lab on Route 16, the Ula'ula Meadow, the police station where Nanu and his plethora of Alolan Meowth live, and finally Po Town under its rainy sky as its littered with Team Skull members. We see Calvin enter the town, having a determined look upon his face.
The scene changes to Mimi using Shadow Claw to take down the grunts' Pokémon, fighting alongside Poliwag and Togedemaru. In the meantime, their trainer has Toucannon use Beak Blast on Plumeria's Alolan Muk before Gumshoos attacks her Salazzle with Take Down.
Back with Erika, she commands Primarina against Nanu's Honchkrow, who's easily weaving around her Sparkling Aria in order to land a Sky Attack. The island kahuna exhales with frustration, knowing that his opponent can do better.
We then see Guzma and Calvin meet again inside the Shady House, where the former's Golisopod duels against the latter's Incineroar in a clash of Poison Jabs and Darkest Lariats. The battle comes to a point where Golisopod uses Liquidation to try and counter Incineroar's Inferno Overdrive. A fierce blast results from the collision, engulfing the house in smoke.
When the second verse begins, we see a determined Lillie being led away by Team Skull. From afar, Hau lies upon his knees with his Decidueye and Alolan Raichu fainted beside him, crying as he failed to protect her. We go various cuts of Trent training with his Greninja on Mount Hokulani, Paige doing pushups alongside her Blaziken at the outskirts of Malie City, and Pyrrha overlooking the horizon from the Hau'oli City beachfront, standing alongside a Lapras and a Typhlosion.
The scene changes to Erika pumping her fist forward, commanding her Alolan Sandshrew as he uses Ice Ball to take down a Gible, followed by Palossand blasting a Krokorok away with Earth Power. They follow their trainer as she makes her way to the Ruins of Abundance, where Tapu Bulu lies in wait…
We then see Gladion command Null to attack Calvin, who counters by sending in Mimi. After they clash for a moment, Gladion and Calvin share a glance. What follows is the two of them along with Hau and Trent venturing throughout Aether Paradise, coming across several employees and having to battle them. All the while, we see Lillie clutch her duffel bag tightly as she comes face to face with Lusamine, who grins evilly.
Elsewhere in Sinnoh, we see Leslie curiously looking at the Pokédex journal before stopping at a cliff that faces towards Mt. Coronet in the distance. The page she's on in the journal has a meticulous drawing of the mountain ahead. The camera pans back to unveil a pair of ghostly figures that are standing alongside her.
The opening ends with Erika, Paige and Pyrrha arriving at Aether Paradise, joining the boys in the raid ahead…
END OPENING
Riding a New Wave!
"Huh… huh…" Leslie breathed out in exhaustion. Standing before her was Mortalius, who was evidently dirtied and worn. He was alongside a Talonflame and a Hariyama, having just dealt with the mysterious effeminate Ultra Beast that had just appeared.
"Thank you for coming on such short notice…" Hala said out of gratitude to Ash, who was next to him.
"Hey, it's no problem…" he assured in reply, returning the Scorching Pokémon to his Poké Ball in a beam of red light, "When we saw that hole in the sky once the clouds came in, we figured something was really wrong," he noted to the Melemele kahuna.
"Well, you were right to be concerned…" he responded.
"Was that even a Pokémon…?" Leslie wondered while returning her Magmortar to his Great Ball in a beam of red light.
"Whatever it may have been, it was strong enough to trade blows with each of our Pokémon," Hala noted, putting his hands onto his hips, "It may have retreated, but…" he continued while rubbing his chin in thought.
"Pika, peekah?" Pikachu asked, being perched upon his trainer's shoulder as he got his attention.
"In any case, I guess we should be glad it's over," he confirmed.
"Koh," Tapu Koko suddenly chirped, getting their attentions as they looked over to the Land Spirit Pokémon.
"Is something the matter, Tapu Koko?" Hala asked of the guardian deity. It merely glanced over to Leslie for a moment before taking off into the sky in a burst of lightning. "As fickle as ever, hm?" the kahuna noted with a sigh.
"Ash! Leslie!" a familiar voice cried out. The group turned to see Mirajane running over to them.
"Mom!" her daughter exclaimed in surprise. She and Ash went over to the Take-Over wizard, engaging in a loving group hug that included Pikachu.
"Huh…" Mirajane sighed with relief, "When I heard from Kukui that he saw you and Leslie heading to the ruins, I was worried sick!" she pointed out emphatically.
"We're okay, Mom…" Leslie assured, holding up her hands. The Fairy Tail mage smiled, going over and exchanging a quick kiss with her husband. In the meantime, Hala glanced up at the cloudy sky, seeing it slowly start to clear.
'Has the threat passed?' he wondered inwardly, 'Or is something else starting to take place?' he questioned through his thoughts. The sun was starting to set around Alola, including at Aether Paradise. The sleeping Erika was finally starting to wake up, as her eyes fluttered open.
"Huh…?" she uttered, seeing that she was lying upon a bed, "Where… am I?" she asked as she sat up, rubbing her tired eyes.
"Lurah!" Lurantis suddenly squeaked.
"San!" Sandslash exclaimed. Their trainer yelped in surprise as both of them tackled her onto the bed, nuzzling against her affectionately.
"Guys…" she uttered out, letting off a small smile. She then took notice of Primarina scooching over to join the others in their affectionate gestures. "It's okay…" she assured to them, embracing them warmly.
"Oh, you're awake," Lillie's voice chimed in, getting her attention as she saw the blonde-haired girl sitting right next to her.
"L-Lillie!" she stuttered in surprise, removing her arms from her Pokémon, "Wait… where are we?" she asked as she looked around.
"My mother's room," the blonde-haired girl answered, taking off her hat and setting it down onto the floor, "In the past, whenever I had nightmares, I'd come in here to sleep with her and my father," she told her friend, "She wasn't always like the way she is now…" she mentioned. Hearing that, Erika recalled what had happened back in the collection room. She clutched her knees anxiously.
"I'm… sorry for getting all mad…" she apologized, looking down sadly at the floor.
"Oh, uh, no!" Lillie stammered out, waving her hands, "I understand what you were…" she tried to say, trailing off as she noticed something.
"What?" Erika uttered, looking over to the blonde-haired girl.
"Y…Your eyes…" she stuttered, "They're… violet…" she pointed out in surprise. Blinking in shock, the Ketchum girl immediately shot up onto her feet. Her Pokémon watched on worriedly as she approached a mirror. She looked at her reflection and widened her eyes to find that her eyes were indeed the very color that her friend said they were, and not their usual brown. She grimaced with frustration, lowering her head.
"I really got mad, huh?" she guessed.
"Wh-What?" Lillie stammered in confusion as she blinked.
"My mom…" Erika uttered out, "back where she's from, she once worked as a wizard for her guild…" she told her friend, "They called her the She-Devil because of the magic she used," she mentioned, going back over to the bed and sitting down next to Lillie, "And… I inherited it…" she added in remembrance.
"Does… that explain your change in eye color?" her blonde-haired friend guessed, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah…" the Ketchum girl replied with a nod, "I've only ever actually used it a couple times… this being the second…" she pointed out, balling her hands into fists over her knees.
"Erika…" Lillie uttered worriedly. The Ketchum girl didn't always have a happy-go-lucky childhood. Sometimes, it had been scary…
FLASHBACK
"Erika, calm down!" Leslie yelled desperately as her little sister was snarling at the wild swarm of Beedrill. While playing in the forest, the aspiring kunoichi had accidentally hit a tree with some Kakuna upon them, causing them to evolve into the Poison Bee Pokémon and attack her. She had screamed for help, enticing her big sister to hurry in to go and help her.
However, the screams turned into snarls. And by the time Leslie arrived, she was shocked to find Erika actually attacking the swarm of Beedrill herself. Claws adorned her fingers, and her teeth were sharp. Her eyes shined a violent violet as she growled at the swarm of Poison Bee Pokémon. None of them seemed willing to provoke the little girl any further, even if she had started everything.
They flew off hurriedly, much to Leslie's surprise. But she immediately stopped worrying about that as she heard her sister snarl with rage. She saw her actually start to run after the fleeing swarm.
"Stop, Erika!" she called out, quickly running over to grab her by her right shoulder. She responded by biting her older sister's hand. "AH!" she yelped in pain, wincing as she pulled her extremity away.
However, she wasn't deterred as she reached over again and took hold of her little sister, pulling her into a tight embrace. Snarling, the aspiring kunoichi chomped her left shoulder. She winced again, but didn't let go.
"It's okay…!" she assured through the pain, "It's all over now, Erika!" she pointed out, "No one's gonna hurt you!" she promised as her shoulder and hand bled. After a few moments, the little girl blinked, removing her teeth from her sister's bleeding shoulder. She trembled in fright as she looked at the wound, with her eyes reverting to their normal brown.
"L…Leslie…?" she whimpered out, getting her sister's attention as she pulled back and smiled, sighing in relief.
"Glad to see you back," she remarked, not even concerning herself with the wounds her sister dealt her. Erika teared up, trembling before crying into Leslie's chest. She held onto the little girl warmly, letting her sob as much as she needed to.
END FLASHBACK
"Oh my…" Lillie uttered out after hearing her friend's story.
"Yeah…" she said, clutching the bedsheets tightly as her Pokémon looked on with worried expressions, "I expected my mom to get all mad at me for hurting Leslie…" she admitted, "but she actually hugged me, too…" she noted, tearing up a little, "I'm sorry I got so angry…!" she apologized through sniffles, "Hearing Miss Lusamine call you and Gladion those things…" she continued, "I just couldn't let her say that…!" she exclaimed, wiping her teary eyes. The blonde-haired girl looked at her sympathetically. She glanced back over to her duffel bag, seeing the transformed Nebby lying upon it. And at that moment, a determined expression came across her face.
"Erika…" she began, getting her teary friend's attention, "you've helped me time and time again," she pointed out, "And you said the very things I should've said to my mother a long time ago…" she added firmly, "I know I might be acting selfish…" she kept going, turning to the Ketchum girl, "but I'll need your help one more time to help save Nebby and find my mother," she told her, "There's no one I'd trust to help me more than you," she stated. Hearing that, Erika finally lifted her head up, wiping her eyes as she sniffled.
"Yeah…" she responded with a simple nod, "I'll definitely help you!" she promised as tears pricked the corners of her eyes.
"Luraahhnn!" Lurantis exclaimed in agreement.
"San, slahh!" Sandslash cried out.
"Pree!" Primarina yipped with a smile. They were all determined to help Lillie however they could. Elsewhere on the artificial island, Gladion was down in the laboratories, looking through boxes of files and papers.
He then took notice of a button behind one of the boxes he had pulled out. Cautiously, he pressed it. A secret compartment opened up on the other side of the wall, revealing what looked like a silvery blue flute. Blinking in surprise, the blonde-haired boy grabbed it and pulled it out.
"What is this…?" he wondered aloud, narrowing his eyes onto the instrument.
"Hey, Gladion?" Calvin's voice chimed in, causing him to turn around to see the Ketchum boy there, "What do you have there?" he asked curiously. Blinking in surprise, the former enforcer looked back at the flute.
"Not sure yet," he answered, setting the instrument aside onto the desk, "Anyways, you should be resting and checking in on your sister, right?" he inquired of his rival.
"Erika'll be fine," he assured in response, "More importantly, how are you holding up?" he asked. Gladion blinked in surprise.
"Me?" he inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"Miss Lusamine's your mom and she… said those things about you and Lillie…" Calvin pointed out as a reply, "I don't know how your sister's handling it, but…" he continued, "I just wanna make sure you're okay, too," he told him.
"Uh… I-I'm fine…" Gladion stuttered in claim, "Anyways, I was trying to find some stuff relating to how we could go after her and Guzma…" he explained while pulling out some papers, "I think there's something on the legendary Pokémon that could help… but I'm not sure just yet…" he mentioned.
"Hm…" Calvin hummed out, putting his hand onto his chin in thought. He then glanced over and spotted something. In the compartment where the blonde-haired boy had found the flute were a pair of shrunken Premier Balls. Curiously, the Ketchum boy reached in to grab one of them.
'Why are there Pokémon being stored away like this?' he wondered, enlarging the Premier Ball by pressing its button. Overhearing the sound, Gladion glanced over and widened his eyes.
"Wait, don't—!" However, Calvin opened the Poké Ball, causing its blue light to shoot out and form upon the floor, dissipating to reveal another Null.
"Rrrrrr…" it growled out, lifting its head up to glare at the two boys.
"Wh-What?!" the Ketchum boy stammered out in shock. The Null lunged out at him, causing him to brace himself as he had nowhere to run to in the small room. However, it was stopped by Gladion's as it had been called out. It pushed its fellow Synthetic Pokémon away, followed by the blonde-haired boy hurrying over to grab the Premier Ball from Calvin. He aimed it at the other Null and returned it to the spherical container in a beam of red light.
"Huh…" he exhaled in relief, turning to his rival, "Don't touch anything, alright?" he requested firmly of him.
"Yeah, right…" he meekly responded, "Sorry…" he apologized, glancing down ashamedly. Seeing that expression, Gladion exhaled a sigh. He returned to its own Premier Ball before gathering the boxes of papers he had found.
"Here, you take one," he insisted of Calvin, enticing him to grab one, "We'll look at them back in my room in the mansion," he told him.
"Oh, okay," he replied, looking over to see that the former enforcer had forgotten to grab the flute. Taking the initiative, he grabbed it himself, putting it atop the box he carried before following Gladion out of the lab. "Are… you going to tell me about that Null back there?" he asked of his rival.
"I'm going to tell you everything," he confirmed in reply, "You deserve to know the truth after all that's happened," he mentioned firmly. Hearing that, Calvin glanced down worriedly in thought. What other truth was there to tell?
X
"Erika's awake?!" Pyrrha asked in exclamation, shooting up onto her feet from her bed. She, Hau, Paige and Trent had been roomed up together in the mansion, having just learned the news from Wicke.
"Right now, she's with Lady Lillie," the assistant noted as a response, setting down a tray of drinks and food for the trial-goers, "I'm sure for the time being, they'd like to rest themselves before tomorrow," she inferred before exhaling a sigh, "I'm truly sorry for all that we've wound up putting you through…" she apologized, bowing to them.
"Oh, n-n-no!" Pyrrha quickly stuttered out, frantically waving her hands to Wicke, "We know you weren't involved in what Miss Lusamine was doing!" she noted aloud.
"But I was complacent…" the assistant admitted in reply to her surprise along with those of the others, "When we began research into the Ultra Beasts and the Ultra Wormhole after the Aether Tournament, I noticed a change in the president's behavior…" she told the group, "She seemed… very desperate and determined to see her goal through…" she recalled.
"And that goal involved using Cosmog, right?" Hau guessed, raising an eyebrow. Wicke nodded.
"Over three months ago, Lillie escaped with Cosmog in the effort to keep it away from the president's grasp," she told the trial-goers, "The residual energy it had left behind was what she used to open the Ultra Wormhole you had seen prior to today," she explained to them.
"That makes sense… I think…" Paige noted, arching an eyebrow as she was still somewhat perplexed.
"So Lillie was trying to protect Cosmog from being used to open the Ultra Wormhole again," Trent realized, putting his hand onto his chin, "But why would Lusamine wanna open it after the last time?" he wondered aloud.
"Yeah, that's a good question…" Pyrrha noted in agreement. Sadly, Wicke lowered her head.
"The president's husband… was engulfed in an Ultra Wormhole long ago…" she finally answered, much to everyone's surprise as their eyes widened, "He was passionate about discovering the truth about Ultra Beasts as much as his wife," she told the group with a small smile, "But one day, an experiment of theirs went wrong, resulting in him being sucked into the wormhole and supposedly lost forever…" she mentioned with sadness in her voice.
"Is that why Miss Lusamine wanted to get into the Ultra Wormhole so badly?" Hau asked.
"After all this time, I couldn't say…" Wicke admitted in reply with a shake of her head, "She seemed so hyper-focused on the wormhole that I didn't see any sign of longing for her to see her husband again," she added. The four trial-goers looked to each other worriedly, wondering what they would need to do next. Elsewhere in the mansion, Calvin was holding onto a Beast Ball in his right hand.
"So this is the Poké Ball they invented specifically for Ultra Beasts, huh?" he inquired, holding it up to get a better look at it as he leaned against the bed.
"Yeah," Gladion answered, sitting on the other side of the bed and looking through papers, "They likely used any of the energy they gathered from the Ultra Wormhole to make those," he pointed out in remembrance, "Regular Poké Balls won't cut it against monsters like them," he mentioned.
"And regular Pokémon normally can't fight them either, right?" Calvin guessed.
"…Yeah…" the former enforcer replied while narrowing his eyes, "That's what Null is supposed to be for," he noted to his rival's surprise, "The scientists here created them in order to battle against the Ultra Beasts, no matter how strong they were," he explained, "Their making was inspired by Arceus, who was said to be able to become any Pokémon type," he added, "But…" he continued as the Ketchum boy listened intently, "they became too difficult to control and thus had their powers suppressed by those wooden helmets," he told him.
"So then… was Null a different Pokémon before it got that helmet?" Calvin asked.
"I called it Silvally," Gladion confirmed in reply, "The one I took like my sister took Cosmog was probably the most ruthless of the three that were made," he pointed out, "But… I never knew how to break off its mask," he admitted in frustration, tensing his shoulders.
"Gladion…" the Ketchum boy uttered out worriedly.
"Your sister…" the former enforcer started to say, causing him to blink in surprise, "she did everything that I should've done when it came to our mother," he confessed, "Even hit her for all that she'd done to us…" he mentioned, letting out a chuckle, "She really is amazing," he commented, letting off a little smile.
"Yeah…" Calvin agreed as he grinned for a moment. He then stared down at the floor in deep thought. "Maybe the reason Null's mask hasn't come off is because it doesn't completely trust you yet," he inferred, causing Gladion to blink in surprise, "It might be a man-made Pokémon, but it's still a Pokémon all the same," he pointed out, "Like your others, it needs that bond with you," he mentioned.
The blonde-haired boy reached down and grabbed the Premier Ball off of his belt. As much as he wanted to argue the point with the Ketchum boy, he found that he couldn't. The creature he had taken from the artificial island was meant to be his partner… and probably his friend. He exhaled a sigh.
"Null…" he began, "I'm sorry if I've made you feel like you can't trust me after all this time," he apologized, holding the spherical container he had up to his forehead, "But… I really do need your help going forward…" he confessed as he trembled a little, "To stop the Ultra Beasts, to defend the people of Alola…" he listed off, "and to save my sister and my mother," he mentioned firmly. All of a sudden, the Premier Ball burst open, with its blue light pouring out onto the floor. It took shape, dissipating to reveal the Synthetic Pokémon.
Its trainer looked over in surprise as well as Calvin. They both stood up, watching the chimera-like creature approach Gladion. It stared into his eyes intently before backing up. All of a sudden, his wooden mask cracked.
"Null!" the former enforcer exclaimed, while Calvin gasped. Splinters of the mask rained off of the Synthetic Pokémon before its body glowed a bright blue just as the helmet shattered off of him. His body didn't appear to change too much except for protrusions coming out from back of the crest atop its head. When the glow subsided, both boys widened their eyes.
The being before them had become a quadrupedal, chimeric Pokémon with traits from a variety of creatures. It had a mammalian head with mechanical parts. Covering most of its head and neck was a thick, silver mane that extended down over its chest. Its blunt snout was metallic on the bridge of its nose and upper jaw. It had a triangular black nose framed by three red lines, pointed ears with bright pink and black insides, one visible fang on each side of its lower jaw, and a slight overbite. Its eyes were bright silver, having no visible pupils, and appeared to be surrounded by an empty, black space. On each side of its head was a circular, metallic drive, with a white circle crossed by a metal line. On top of its head was a large, axe-like fur or feather crest. The tip of the crest had a hooked, metallic piece, while the back had three white feathers.
Its lower body was mostly covered in short, black fur. The lower half of each front leg was insectoid and green with spikes along the back, while the rear legs had thick purple scales on the flanks, shins, and on the top of the foot. All four of its feet had three toes, but the front two toes faced forward and one backward. Additionally, the hind paws had a short, gray claw on the back of the ankle. Its fishlike tail consisted of two dark blue spines with a white fin stretched between them. The top spine had a line of short, gray spikes.
"Sivah," it huffed, approaching its trainer.
"S…Silvally?" he stammered out with shaking eyes. The evolved Synthetic Pokémon leaned toward him… and affectionately nuzzled its head against his. In that one moment, Gladion felt himself start to tear up. His partner did trust him. "Thank you…!" he whimpered out as his lips quivered. Looking on, Calvin let off a small smile. Both he and his rival had been reaffirmed. Now it was time for them to make things right.
X
"Hah~…" Hau yawned tiredly, rubbing his eyes, "Anyone else totally wiped still?" he asked of his fellow trial-goers, who were all standing at the railing outside the mansion the very next morning.
"Barely a wink…" Trent muttered in response as he leaned back against the railing, "What about you girls?" he questioned to Paige and Pyrrha.
"Same…" the former answered.
"It's just… really stressful to think about what's going on around Alola…" the red-and-yellow-haired girl admitted to the group.
"Yeah…" Trent agreed with a nod, "Ultra Beasts could be roaming about, wreaking havoc on the islands," he pointed out.
"I know Gladion said there're strong trainers aside from us…" Hau chimed in, "but I can't help but be worried for Tutu and the others if there's way too many Ultra Beasts…" he confessed, balling his hands into fists.
"If you keep worrying, you'll end up losing faith in guys like Hala entirely," another voice remarked, getting their attentions as they turned to see Gladion approaching alongside Calvin, "And you know he's strong, right?" he questioned rhetorically.
"Gladion!" the ponytailed boy yelped in surprise.
"Cal, hey!" Trent greeted as he and the others went to meet their colleagues halfway.
"So… what's next?" Paige asked after a moment.
"Yeah, do we have a plan?" Pyrrha inquired on.
"H-Hold on a second, guys…" Calvin stuttered out, holding his hands out in a placating manner, "Let Gladion explain…" he advised. He glanced over to the blonde-haired boy, who nodded. He then stepped forward and pulled out the flute he had found last night.
"What's that?" Hau asked, blinking curiously.
"The Moon Flute," Gladion answered, "It's something my mother and the scientists here had been researching in terms of its connection to the legendary Pokémon of Alola," he told the group.
"Why would she want to learn about that?" Trent inquired.
"Because it's said that the legendary Pokémon of the sun and the moon can travel through the Ultra Wormhole," the former enforcer answered, much to everyone's surprise as they gasped.
"And that's how we're going to get Miss Lusamine and Guzma back," Calvin mentioned, "I know they're both awful people, but…" he continued, balling his hands into fists, "leaving them in that place can't be good!" he pointed out emphatically, "We've gotta do something!" he insisted.
"Calvin…" Paige uttered out with a concerned expression.
"So does that flute summon the legendary Pokémon?" Trent asked of Gladion, getting his attention.
"No, not alone," he responded as he looked down at the silvery blue instrument, "When played together with the Sun Flute in harmony, then the Legendary Pokémon is said to appear," he explained, "At least, according to the notes Calvin and I read last night," he mentioned.
"But… where's this Sun Flute?" Pyrrha asked.
"We don't know yet…" the Ketchum boy answered, "But we're thinking it might be around the next island," he pointed out.
"Yeah, Poni," Gladion chimed in, "We're gonna head there next to try and get some answers," he told the group.
"If you're both going, then so am I," Paige decided as she stepped forward, "After what happened yesterday, I think you two are gonna need all the help you can get," she noted to them with a grin.
"Same," Trent agreed, stepping forward, "I'd actually be happy to help you two this time," he assured to them.
"I will, too!" Pyrrha exclaimed as she pumped her right fist up. Surprisingly, Hau didn't say a word. He was thinking a lot about all that had already happened in terms of his contributions during the whole ordeal against the Aether Foundation and Team Skull. If he was being honest with himself, he hadn't contributed much. He felt like deadweight.
"Good morning, everyone!" Rotom's voice buzzed in greeting, getting their attentions as they looked over to see the Pokédex floating towards them.
"Hey Rotom!" Calvin greeted back, seeing it approach, "Are Erika and Lillie up?" he asked it.
"Yes sir, zzt!" it responded, nodding its body, "They'll be out in a jiffy, zzt!" it assured additionally.
"Did you find out anything about what happened with Cosmog yesterday?" Gladion asked the Pokédex, getting its attention.
"I think so, zzt…" it responded somewhat unsurely. It then brought up an image of the transformed Nebula Pokémon upon its screen. "Cosmog'zzz new form hasn't moved at all since the event," it told the group, "but its mazzz hazzz increased exponentially, zzt," it mentioned.
"Its mass?" Paige repeated in confusion.
"It weighzzz nine hundred and ninety-nine-point-nine kilogramzzz now," the Pokédex explained. Both the silvery-haired girl and Pyrrha blinked twice.
"HUHHHHHHHHHHH?!" they exclaimed in disbelief.
"And is it still asleep?" Trent questioned, ignoring the shocked reactions of the girls.
"That'zzz what it lookzzz like," Rotom responded, showing off various pictures of the transformed Cosmog.
"Hmm…" Gladion hummed, putting his right hand onto his chin in thought, "Going to Poni will be for the best after all," he concluded, causing Calvin to glance over at him in confusion, "The guardian deity on that island is Tapu Fini, who's said to have water that can purify anything," he explained, "Maybe it can purify whatever happened to Cosmog…" he suggested, narrowing his eyes.
"Tapu Fini?" Pyrrha repeated as she blinked, recovering from her earlier shock like Paige.
"Here you go!" Rotom offered, pulling up an image of the Land Spirit Pokémon upon its screen, "Tapu Fini, the Land Spirit Pokémon," it began, "The guardian deity of Poni, it can control water. People say it can create pure water that will wash away any uncleanness. Although it's called a guardian deity, terrible calamities sometimes befall those who recklessly approach Tapu Fini," it explained thoroughly.
"If Tapu Fini can help Cosmog, we should definitely get it to Poni," Trent affirmed.
"Then we got no time to lose!" a familiar voice called out, catching their attentions as they turned to see the familiar face of Erika arrive.
"Eri!" Hau exclaimed happily upon spotting her. Calvin smiled, but then blinked in surprise upon spotting someone else. It was Lillie, who was dressed much differently. She was wearing a white, short-sleeved hoodie, a white pleated skirt, white socks, and matching wedge shoes. She no longer wore her large white hat, as her blonde hair was tied into a high ponytail. She also carried a pink backpack on her back instead of her normal duffel bag.
The wind breezed through her hair as she flinched momentarily, but she brushed it back, staring up at the bright blue sky alongside Erika. They looked to each other, sharing happy giggles. The others were definitely surprised. After yesterday's events, they didn't expect either of the two girls to look so… chipper.
"Lillie…" Calvin uttered out, blushing a little as he saw her turn to face him.
"I… um…" she stuttered, turning a bit red in the face herself, "I picked up these clothes in Malie…" she told him, "Not sure if they really work for me though…" she admitted with a sheepish smile.
"N-No, I think you look—"
"Fantastic!" Hau interjected as he hopped over with sparkling eyes, much to his cousin's surprise, "You look amazing, Lillie!" he complimented.
"Uh… th-thank you!" she stammered in gratitude, giggling a little. Seeing that, Calvin smiled.
"Yeah, you look great," he said.
"Ahem," Gladion coughed in annoyance, "Can you two not fawn over my sister?" he inquired of the two boys, who both flinched nervously from the sudden venom in his tone. They instantly backed away.
"S-Sorry…" the Ketchum boy stuttered as an apology, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.
"What's with the new look anyway?" Paige inquired curiously, getting the blonde-haired girl's attention.
"Well…" she began to reply, clutching the straps of her backpack, "I know that you've all helped me in many ways during our journey around Alola, so I want to return the favor," she told the group, "This is going to be my Z-Powered Form!" she declared, waving her arms around in a way similar to a person performing the pose for a Normal-type Z-Move. Though sloppy, no one could help but smile a little at the sight.
"And now we've got our Alola Lillie!" Erika added, posing with the blonde-haired girl as she skipped over to her side, laughing happily with her. The levity was nice to see, especially in the wake of what happened yesterday. Gladion then took on a serious expression.
"We got a boat ready down at the docks," he pointed out to the group, causing them to look toward him, "We'll head to Poni and get what we need there," he told them, "After that, we'll figure out our next move," he decided. Hau blinked, turning away with an ashamed look.
"Hau?" Calvin uttered upon noticing, "What's wrong?" he asked in concern.
"You know… trainers should be as strong as their Pokémon, right?" the ponytailed boy inferred, causing everyone around to blink in surprise, "The past couple of battles I've had, I haven't been able to really be a team player without someone's help…" he recalled, "and I really wanna be strong enough to give you all a hand when the time's right!" he stated firmly, "So I'm gonna go back to Melemele for a little while to figure myself out," he decided.
"Hau…" Erika uttered out. Gladion exhaled a sigh.
"If you think it'll help, then go ahead," he said, "None of us are gonna stop you," he assured.
"Thanks!" Hau replied in gratitude, "I'll try to see you all again soon!" he promised before running off. The Ketchum twins watched their cousin head off with surprised expressions on their faces. However, they did smile.
"See you later, Hau!" Erika yelled.
"We'll definitely battle the next time we see each other!" Calvin vowed firmly. It was a new day for everyone. And they would do their best to make it memorable.

"Whoa…" Pyrrha uttered out in amazement as she and the others disembarked from the boat onto the sturdy boardwalk. She and the others had just arrived on Poni Island, which was the smallest of the four that made up Alola.
"Check out those boats!" Paige pointed out, causing everyone to look towards the vessels docked along the boardwalk. There were ships in the shape of a Magikarp, a Whiscash, a Steelix, and even a Wailord.
"Cool…!" Erika exclaimed as her eyes sparkled.
"Well, we made it…" Trent noted as he, Calvin, Gladion and Lillie trotted just a few feet away from the awed trio of girls, "So now what?" he inquired.
"You all figure out where to find the island kahuna," the former enforcer advised in reply, taking out the Moon Flute and handing it off to Calvin, "I have to go back to Aether Paradise," he said, much to their surprise.
"Wait, why do you—?"
"I promised Wicke I'd help her clean up any of the mess left behind from the Aether Foundation," Gladion mentioned, interrupting the Ketchum boy's question, "And I'm going to see if I can find out what Ultra Beasts escaped the wormholes that appeared on each island," he added in explanation.
"So you're leaving us to do the hard part, huh?" Trent inferred, crossing his arms over his chest in annoyance.
"I'm the one with the Pokémon who can fight the Ultra Beasts toe-to-toe," the former enforcer pointed out in response, "Next to me, you've got the easy job," he remarked. The dark green-haired boy growled at him with a glare.
"Gladion," Lillie suddenly chimed in, getting their attentions as they turned to see the surprisingly serious look on her face, "I'm not going to stop you from going off on your own like before…" she told her brother, causing him to blink as his eyes widened a little, "You have a good reason this time," she noted, clutching the straps of her pink backpack, "But remember, you left me alone with our mother for over a year!" she pointed out somewhat angrily, "If it wasn't for Wicke, I would've…" she continued, lowering her head sadly.
"Huh…" Gladion sighed after a moment, "I'm sorry…" he apologized, "I promise I'll be there when we find a way to open the wormhole again," he assured to her.
"…You better keep it," she responded firmly.
"I will," he replied. He then turned to Calvin and Trent. "Look after her, okay?" he requested of them. They merely nodded. Afterwards, the boat left from the dock, zipping across the water.
"Gladion's really a good guy," the Ketchum boy noted with a small smile.
"I know…" Lillie said after a small sigh, "But he's changed from the person I knew before our father went missing…" she pointed out sadly. She then took a deep breath through her nose and smiled. "Don't worry, I won't get depressed over all of this," she vowed, "I'll move forward as a new version of myself!" she declared with clenched fists.
"That'zzz the spirit!" Rotom buzzed as it floated over.
"By the way, where's Cosmog?" Pyrrha inquired curiously.
"Yeah, did you bring it along?" Paige questioned on.
"Oh, of course!" the ponytailed girl replied, "It's right here in my backpack," she assured, motioning to it with a tilt of her head. Both trial-goer girls widened their eyes.
'HOW THE HECK IS SHE CARRYING IT?!' they wondered inwardly at the same time, remembering the weight of the transformed Cosmog as Rotom described earlier. Meanwhile, Erika wandered about the boardwalk, marveling the various vessels. She approached the Wailord-shaped one, seeing that there looked to be a restaurant inside. She smiled, enjoying the sights of Alola as usual and loving every minute of it.
She then took notice of a girl walking out from the ship. She had ash blonde hair with pink paint splattered on the sides and gray eyes. Her face was marked with pink paint as it had a relaxed and calm expression upon it. Her shirt was beige with a camouflage pattern of pastel green and pink paints. Her jeans and sneakers were gray, with the former being a bit ripped. She carried a gray bag with painting supplies and paintbrushes inside. Erika noticed that she wore a familiar-looking charm as a ring on her right index finger.
"That was a nice breakfast…" the paint-faced girl noted as she gave off a small smile. She then took notice of the Ketchum girl, spotting the amulet upon her bag. "Oh, a trial-goer?" she guessed, walking over to her, "It's been a while since one's come to Poni…" she pointed out.
"Who… are you?" Erika inquired as she blinked.
"I'm Mina, Poni's trial captain," the artist introduced.
"Oh!" the Ketchum girl yelped in realization, "It's really nice to meet you!" she greeted, "My name's Erika," she introduced, holding her right hand out for a handshake, which Mina quickly accepted.
"So, you're here for my trial, right?" she guessed of the dark-haired girl, who blinked in surprise.
"Well, uh…" she tried to respond, sheepishly scratching at her right cheek. As much as she wanted to take on another trial, she knew that there was a much more important task at hand. "Sorry, but I'm gonna have to take a raincheck on that trial…" she apologized politely with a bow of her head.
"Oh, that's okay," Mina assured in reply, "Is there something else you need to do?" she inquired with a curious tilt of her head.
"Yeah," Erika confirmed as an answer, "I'm looking for Poni's kahuna," she told the trial captain.
"The kahuna, huh?" she repeated as she blinked, "Hmm… sorry," she apologized after a moment, causing the Ketchum girl to blink in surprise, "I can't help you," she said.
"Wha…?" Erika uttered out, blinking rapidly, "Why not?" she asked.
"Poni doesn't have a kahuna right now," Mina answered, "We lost him almost a year ago," she noted in remembrance.
"O-Oh…" the Ketchum girl stammered, "I'm sorry, I didn't know…" she meekly apologized.
"It's okay," the trial captain assured in response with a small smile, "What'd you want with the kahuna anyway?" she wondered curiously.
"Well, me and my friends wanted to find some things relating to the legendary Pokémon and look for Tapu Fini," Erika explained as a reply, causing Mina to blink in surprise, "We were hoping to start with info from the kahuna, but…" she continued, trailing off with a sad expression.
"Hold on a second," the trial captain insisted, holding up her left hand, "I think I know someone who can help you get the info you need," she told the Ketchum girl.
"Really?" she inquired in response. Mina nodded.
"She's a friend of mine who works on the coast as a farmer," she said, "Her name's Hapu and—"
"Wait, Hapu?" Erika interjected in surprise as she blinked, "I know her!" she pointed out, starting to smile a little.
"Oh, you do?" the trial captain said as she blinked.
"Yeah!" the Ketchum girl responded with a nod, "She's the girl with the purple bonnet, right?" she guessed, pointing to her head.
"Mm," Mina replied as she nodded herself, "She lives out on the coast east of here," she noted while pointing off toward the distance, "Her farm's the only building out there, so it shouldn't be hard to miss," she mentioned.
"Thanks so much!" Erika exclaimed with gratitude as she bowed to the trial captain, "I'll be happy to take your trial as soon as I can!" she promised, jogging off and waving goodbye.
"See you later," Mina remarked in farewell as she waved herself. Moments later, the group gathered together by the Pokémon Center.
"Hapu lives on Poni?" Lillie inquired, blinking rapidly in surprise after hearing what Erika told her.
"Mm-hmm!" the Ketchum girl responded as she nodded, "We don't have the kahuna to go to, but I'm sure she could tell us what we need to know about the legendary Pokémon!" she pointed out.
"And maybe a way to help Nebby…" Calvin added, "We should get going before too long," he insisted of the group.
"You guys can go on ahead," Trent said, catching everyone's attention, "Paige and I'll stay behind to see if we can't get any other info from the islanders," he told them.
"Yeah, good idea," the Ketchum boy agreed with a nod, "We'll meet back up here later tonight!" he decided, heading off with his sister, Lillie, Pyrrha, and Rotom.
"So… what's this Hapu person like?" the latter of the group asked after a while of traveling along the coastline.
"She's a very dependable young girl," Lillie answered with a small smile, "And her Mudsdale definitely seemed very strong…" she added in remembrance.
"Yeah, I've seen him in action!" Erika mentioned, "He's incredible!" she pointed out. The group continued along the dirt road of the coastline before approaching the lone building after passing through an archway.
"Thizzz must be the place, zzt…" Rotom buzzed as it floated beside the group.
"Yeah," Calvin agreed with a nod.
"Brrrfff!" a voice suddenly neighed, getting their attentions. Galloping towards them was none other than the farm girl's Mudsdale.
"Hey, he recognizes us!" Erika realized with a smile. The Draft Horse Pokémon slowed to a stop before the group, huffing with happiness.
"It's really nice to see you again too, Mudsdale!" Lillie greeted, letting out a giggle.
"Oh, I was wondering what got you in such a fuss…" a familiar voice remarked, causing those of the group to turn and see Hapu there, walking over with a Golurk by her side.
"Hapu!" Rotom exclaimed in greeting.
"Well, if it isn't you lot!" the farm girl greeted, putting her gloved hands onto her hips, "Now I recognize Calvin and Rotom from a mile away…" she remarked with a chuckle.
"Good to see you too, Hapu," the Ketchum boy greeted.
"And we're Erika and Lillie!" his sister chimed in for herself and the blonde-haired girl.
"Oh, so you two went through some makeovers, hm?" the farm girl guessed, blinking in surprise.
"Yes!" Lillie confirmed in reply, "I'm now in my Z-Powered Form!" she declared, holding her fists up determinedly.
"Heh, heh!" Hapu chuckled, "Well, I'm sure no one would call either of you lily-livered!" she remarked.
"Thank you!" the ponytailed girl responded gratefully. Erika blinked.
'What the heck does lily-livered mean?' she wondered inwardly as she tilted her head to the side.
"Um… excuse me?" Pyrrha chimed in, getting their attentions as they turned to her, "We actually had something we wanted to ask you about…" she told the farm girl, who blinked in surprise. Moments later, they were gathered in the living room of the household, with Hapu setting down a tea tray onto the coffee table.
"So you're looking to find out more about the legendary Pokémon, hm?" she asked of the group.
"Yeah," Calvin answered with a nod, "We heard that the kahuna had passed on…" he continued, "but it sounds like you knew him," he pointed out.
"Well, you're darn right I did," Hapu remarked with a grin, "He was my grandpapa!" she noted, causing everyone to gasp in surprise.
"Your grandpa was the kahuna?!" Erika questioned, quite shocked, "Oh gosh, I'm so sorry for your loss…" she apologized, bowing her head.
"Don't worry so much about it!" the farm girl insisted in response, "Anyways, as much as I'd love to tell you all I can about the Legendary Pokémon, I can't…" she told the group.
"Why not?" Lillie questioned worriedly.
"There's a sacredness to the legends around each of the islands, and the kahunas are trusted with those secrets," Hapu explained in reply, "However, since I'm not the kahuna of Poni yet, I can't tell you anything," she pointed out.
"But… if your grandpa passed," Calvin began to infer, "then wouldn't you automatically be the kahuna?" he guessed.
"Not exactly," the farm girl responded, "The kahunas are selected not only by the one prior, but also by each island's guardian deity," she told him and the others, "And Tapu Fini hasn't recognized me as Poni's new kahuna, at least not yet," she mentioned, glancing down ashamedly, "Even after we fought that weird monster that came from the hole in the sky…" she added to the group's surprise. They glanced to each other with uncertain expressions.
"Well… maybe we can help," Erika suggested, causing Hapu to perk up in surprise.
"The truth is, we were hoping to also see Tapu Fini as well," Lillie said, reaching into her backpack and pulling out the transformed Nebby.
'HOW IS SHE ABLE TO LIFT THAT?!' Pyrrha inwardly wondered in disbelief.
"Now what might this Pokémon be?" Hapu inquired curiously, blinking in confusion as she stared at it.
"It wazzz a Pokémon called Cosmog that looked like thizzz," Rotom buzzed, bringing up an image of the Nebula Pokémon onto its screen.
"Nebby here used up a lot of its power and then changed into this form," Lillie explained, "And we had been thinking that a way to cure it…" she continued.
"…would be with Tapu Fini's help…" Hapu realized, letting off a grin, "Well, I'd be glad to help try to solve two problems in one go!" she exclaimed as she gave a thumbs up, "I'll lead the lot of you out towards the ruins!" she promised. Everyone smiled.
"Thank you so much!" Lillie exclaimed gratefully. With that, their objective had been set. But what they didn't realize was that time was running short…

"My, what a beautiful world…" Lusamine remarked, seeing the various Nihilego floating about within the dark cave that had several colorful rocks strewn about. The Aether Foundation president walked along the pathway as Guzma nervously followed her. The air felt thick and hard to breathe. And he grew all the more nervous as the Ultra Beasts roamed around the area. "Feel free to enjoy yourself as well, Guzma," Lusamine insisted, getting his attention, "It's only natural that you'd want one of these precious beasts for yourself as well…" she pointed out.
"Uh, y-yeah…" he stuttered in response. He honestly wasn't sure what to do at this point. And then a Nihilego floated out in front of him.
"Neeee…" it hissed. In that moment, the Team Skull boss cracked a wicked grin, taking out a Poké Ball and enlarging it with a press of its button.
"Might as well make the most of this…" he remarked, throwing the spherical container forward. However, the Ultra Beast flew up and evaded it. "Huh?" Guzma uttered in surprise right before seeing the Nihilego loom over him. It stretched out its limbs to wrap around him, pulling him toward it. "A-Ah…" he stammered out in fright, "AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" he screamed, all while Lusamine was blissfully unaware of what was happening…
