POKÉMON SUN & MOON
THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME
"With tomorrow being an off-day for our two finalists to rest, it's sure to be bustling up here tomorrow at Manalo Stadium!" Dahlia noted from the ONBS broadcast, seated alongside her fellow Frontier Brains, "Erika and Calvin Ketchum are set to face off to not only claim victory over the Lanakila Conference," she continued, "but also the title of Alola's first-ever Champion!" she added excitedly.
"To think that it'd end up being between the twin children of Ash Ketchum…" Argenta commented, "This is such an interesting time we live in…" she added.
"And how!" Dahlia remarked in agreement, "With the day off tomorrow, both Erika and Calvin have the opportunity to recoup and figure out what teams of six they'll build to attain victory," she explained, "Of course, my more analytical partner here should be able to tell that better than me!" she added, gesturing to Thorton, who was seated to her left.
"After witnessing every battle the two have had thus far, along with what Pokémon they've used, I estimate a fifty-six percent chance that Calvin emerges victorious," he told the audience.
"Fifty-six?" Argenta repeated.
"That's quite a low percentage…" Darach commented.
"It's based mostly on the teams that Calvin has utilized throughout the tournament," the Factory Head clarified, "His Pokémon, such as Araquanid, Mimikyu, and Toucannon, have proven to be a force to be reckoned with," he pointed out, "With that, he still has Incineroar, who's gotten today and will get tomorrow off for rest," he mentioned.
"That Incineroar's definitely gonna play a huge part tomorrow," Dahlia affirmed confidently.
"Hmph," a voice huffed as the TV playing the broadcast was shut off, "If I were stronger, I'd be able to beat both of those children," he remarked.
"Now, now, Bede…" Rose's voice chimed in, standing by the door as he sipped on his glass of white wine, causing the figure at the couch to turn and see him there, "There's a reason those two made their way into the finals," he pointed out, "It wasn't just sheer luck," he mentioned seriously. Seated upon the furniture was a young boy with a curly head of platinum blond hair and purple eyes that are heavily lashed. He wore a long magenta and violet coat, a golden wristwatch, a single thumbless glove, white pants that were meshed along the back and pink tabi-style sneakers. His coat had a symbol of overlapping hexagons and a pouch stitched on the back.
"Hm," he huffed, letting off a smirk, "Then I'll have to go and see for myself," he remarked, "Wouldn't you agree?" he asked of the figure beside him. It was a small Pokémon with a round pink body and a pair of small feet. Most of her body was covered by a blue wig-like feature with a pink, hat-like protrusion on top. This protrusion was decorated with a white spot and had a blue bulbous growth on its tip. The flaps on the side of her head appeared to be able to function like limbs, as she raised them up.
"Tenn!" she squeaked, making her trainer crack a smirk.
"Erika's team isn't something to just snuff at either," Dahlia pointed out as her voice was broadcasting from the TVs throughout Malie City, including the one at the restaurant where the Ketchum family was for the evening.
"Quite true," Darach agreed, "Primarina, Lycanroc, Sandslash…" he listed off, "She has quite a few Pokémon that are more than capable of battling tough foes," he pointed out.
"Still, my statistics are accurate," Thorton affirmed confidently.
"Oh, you're always talking statistics…" Argenta grumbled, "I prefer to just see the battles unfold," she confessed.
"And the night after tomorrow, we'll see the biggest battle in Alola's history unfold!" Dahlia confirmed excitedly, "Stay tuned, everyone!" she insisted of the audience before the broadcast cut to commercial.
"Huh…" Erika exhaled, "Got a lot of hype to live up to, huh?" she assumed.
"You'll get used to it, I promise," Ash assured in reply, using his chopsticks to take a piece of gyoza on the platter before him, gorging on it heartily.
"It feels like everyone here's been staring ever since we got here…" Calvin pointed out, sounding somewhat anxious.
"Now you know how I feel…" Leslie muttered out. Her little sister gave off a blank look.
"They only stare at you because of your big b—"
"Anyway!" Mirajane chimed in, interjecting her youngest daughter in the nick of time before any bickering could ensue, "With an off-day tomorrow, you two are probably going to want to prep your teams, right?" she guessed of the twins, who looked to each other.
"I guess so…" Calvin responded, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
"Honestly, I'd rather relax a little before the final…" Erika admitted.
"Taking things a little too easy, Sis?" Leslie remarked in question.
"I-I never said I was!" her little sister stammered as a reply, making her giggle to her chagrin.
"Now, now…" Mirajane repeated, "There's no need to go teasing everyone…" she noted, slurping up some ramen noodles from her bowl.
"Peekah, pika!" Pikachu agreed, gorging on his own food like Jangmo-o, who was beside him.
"Jangmo-o's really fit in with the family," Ash pointed out, "Still, I doubt that means you'll try to use him tomorrow," he noted to his youngest daughter.
"Yeah, sorry…" she apologized in response, "But I promise, I'll get you trained up to be strong enough to compete with me and the others someday!" she vowed with clenched fists to the Scaly Pokémon.
"Jahng!" he chirped excitedly. Just then, a new plate of gyoza was set down at the table. The family looked over in surprise at the waiter.
"On the house, with compliments from the chef," he remarked, chuckling as he headed off to attend to the other patrons. The twins' eyes sparkled at the new plate set down before them. Their father laughed.
"Well, go ahead!" he insisted, "We're not stopping you!" he pointed out. Erika and Calvin grinned excitedly.
"Thanks for the food!" they yelled together, using their chopsticks to grab and eat the gyoza one after another. Looking over at them from afar at another table was Marnie, who stared curiously at the twins.
"So those are the two finalists, huh?" she inquired, while her brother was seated across from her, "Didn't know they were siblings…" she pointed out.
"Well, that's how some things play out in life," Piers remarked. Meanwhile, Morpeko was gorging on food, as her primary body color had turned purple. Her eyes were downward-slanting red semi-circles, and her right-hand patch of fur had turned from brown to black so that it matched the other side. Her mouth was also constantly formed into an angry snarl as she gobbled her dinner.
"Mor, morr!" she squeaked out.
"Slow down, Morpeko," her trainer advised, glancing back over to the Ketchum twins as they laughed with their family. A lot was bound to happen over the next several hours leading to the final round. But for now, they were just glad to be spending quality time enjoying themselves.
OPENING
Insert "Rise Above" by Rainych
Opens with the sun dawning over Mount Lanakila. In spite of its freezing air, Calvin and Erika stand firm alongside their full teams of Pokémon as the wind rushes by. Near the base of the mountain is the site of what will be Alola's first ever Pokémon League, where Kukui stands with an excited grin on his face.
A rainbow of flower petals washes over the logo as we cut to Calvin lamenting on the boardwalk of the Seafolk Village, sitting alone and wondering if he can really take on the rest of the island challenge. At the same time, Erika is lying on her bed upon her side, thinking about the exact same thing. They both clench their fists determinedly, ready to see things through.
We cut to Calvin flying aboard a Charizard, while Erika's aboard a Pelipper. They fly throughout each of Alola's islands, smiling all the while. They see Ilima, Lana, Kiawe, Mallow, Sophocles, Acerola, Mina, Hala, Olivia, Nanu, and Hapu along the way as they arrive at the Pokémon League.
There, they're greeted by their parents and their big sister, who encourage them as they enter through the doors into the stadium. Inside, they find Hau, Pyrrha, Paige, Trent, and Gladion there. Others like Ryuki, Plumeria, and even Guzma are present. The Ketchum twins both grin excitedly, prepared to engage in some amazing battles.
The scene changes to Calvin commanding his Toucannon to use Beak Blast to take down a Machoke, while Erika has her Lurantis use X-Scissor to down an opponent's Bisharp. Hau's Decidueye goes up against Gladion and Silvally. The Synthetic Pokémon evades his foe's arrow quills before landing a powerful Fire-type Multi-Attack. Decidueye endures it, while Hau prepares a green Z-Crystal with a symbol similar to his partner, cracking a smirk.
We cut to Paige revealing a Key Stone around her neck as she uses it to Mega Evolve her Blaziken, who speeds out to attack Pyrrha's Typhlosion with a Blaze Kick. He counters by using Flamethrower. In the meantime, Trent commands his Alolan Ninetales to use Blizzard on Ryuki's Turtonator. The Blast Turtle Pokémon endures the freezing winds, unleashing a Flamethrower that appears to engulf his foe.
Calvin and Erika are then facing off, with Incineroar and Primarina battling for them. The two collide via a Flare Blitz/Aqua Jet, resulting in a powerful blast. As it clears, we witness Lycanroc slamming his clenched paws against the ground for a Stone Edge aimed to take down Araquanid. However, the Water Bubble Pokémon blasts the incoming stone pillars apart with Liquidation. Oricorio in her Baile Style comes out to unleash the searing fireball of a Revelation Dance toward Toucannon, who endures the attack and retaliates with Hyper Voice.
As the dust settles, we see Lurantis enduring Trop Kicks from Tsareena, gathering sunlight to unleash a Solar Blade onto the Fruit Pokémon. Mimi comes out from the dust, unleashing Shadow Claws onto Starbright, who endures them. She then strikes back with a Meteor Mash, merely busting the costume of the Disguise Pokémon as she chases after her opponent. Finally, we have Marowak using Shadow Bone to bash the incoming icicles of Sandslash, who dives down at him with an Iron Head.
The dust clears again, revealing the Ketchum twins staring at each other confidently with their teams. They're prepared for whatever else is ahead for them as they stand outside the stadium as the sun sets…
END OPENING
Putting a Rose on it!
"Yes, thank you," Oleana said, ending a phone call before pocketing her device, "Unfortunately, Iris is unable to make it due to a prior commitment in Johto," she informed her superior, who exhaled a sigh.
"Will Alder at least be able to attend?" he inquired.
"I'll be contacting him shortly," his assistant affirmed, about to head out of the V.I.P. room. Just as she was about to leave though, the door opened to reveal Kukui standing there, much to her surprise.
"Hm?" Rose uttered, spotting the professor as he walked in past Oleana, "Ah, Kukui!" he greeted, "Excited for the grand finale?" he inquired of him while approaching, "I'm certain it'll be a worldwide spectacle to behold!" he pointed out.
"Yeah, I'm looking forward to it," the professor confirmed.
"Splendid!" the P.L.F. chairman exclaimed in response, "I've got no doubt those Ketchum twins will make for an amazing—"
"Their names are Calvin and Erika," Kukui interjected in a firm tone, causing Rose to blink in surprise, "They're not just Ash's kids," he pointed out, narrowing his eyes, "I know things are bound to get hectic with them being the finalists," he continued, "but don't just look at them as Ash's kids," he insisted, starting to head out, "They're island challengers who're vying for the chance to become champion soon," he declared. He then exited the room without another word.
"…Hm," Rose huffed, "Well, I can't say he's wrong," he confessed, "It does seem a little inappropriate of us to demean those two trainers to their father's name…" he pointed out.
"I don't see what the problem is," Oleana admitted as she walked up to her boss' side, "I would think it's an honor, isn't it?" she inquired.
"Perhaps to some, but what about those two?" the chairman questioned back, "Trying to live up to their father's name might be something that hinders more than helps…" he pointed out. He then blinked in realization. "Where is Bede, by the way?" he asked curiously of his assistant.
"Hey guys!" Calvin greeted excitedly as he and his sister smiled. Burnet had just arrived in Malie, having brought Incineroar, Poliwhirl, Togedemaru, Oricorio, Palossand, and Starbright with her.
"Sehh rawr!" the Heel Pokémon exclaimed as she went over to pick her trainer up, hoisting him into the air happily.
"Haha!" he laughed, "I missed you, too!" he remarked, letting Incineroar, nuzzle against him as Togedemaru and Poliwhirl came over to him as well.
"Fay!" Starbright squeaked as her trainer approached, petting her on the head.
"You three are probably raring go for the finals, huh?" she presumed of her partners, who all voiced their agreements passionately.
"Jah, moh!" Jangmo-o chirped excitedly from Leslie's arms as she and the others came over.
"If either of you two need to swap things around for your teams, you can just come to me!" Burnet vowed to the twins.
"Thank you so much!" they exclaimed gratefully in response. Incineroar then put Calvin down.
"I know for sure that you're gonna be coming along," he affirmed of her, making her grin proudly.
"Toh, togeh!" Togedemaru squeaked insistently.
"Polleee!" Poliwhirl croaked out, much to the Ketchum boy's surprise.
"You wanna battle too, Poliwhirl?" he inquired of the Tadpole Pokémon.
"Wurrl!" he responded with a nod.
"Oh yeah, you haven't used him in any of your battles yet…" Leslie pointed out.
"Well, I did train with him a lot during the month before the league…" her brother noted, "I guess after seeing all those battles, he really wants a shot at helping me get the championship," he concluded.
"Poll!" Poliwhirl exclaimed in agreement, raising his right fist.
"Hmph," a voice scoffed, getting his attention, "Relying on a Pokémon you've yet to seriously battle with will be your downfall," he noted, causing the boy to turn and see Bede standing there alongside his Hatenna.
"Who… are you?" he asked.
"And who's that Pokémon?" Erika asked curiously. Rotom pulled up an image of the Calm Pokémon upon its screen.
"Hatenna, the Calm Pokémon," it began, "Via the protrusion on her head, she senses other creatures' emotions. If you don't have a calm disposition, Hatenna will never warm up to you. If this Pokémon senses a strong emotion, she will run away as fast as she can. She prefers areas without people," it explained thoroughly.
"As you can plainly see based on that Pokédex's entry, my Hatenna's well-trained to handle herself," Bede affirmed cockily.
"Tenn!" the Calm Pokémon squeaked.
"You didn't answer my question," Calvin pointed out, "Who are you?" he asked, clenching his fists.
"Well, aren't you a curious one…" Bede remarked under his breath, "I'm Bede, a trainer from Galar," he introduced to the Ketchum boy's surprise, "I'm going to be taking part in their Gym Challenge after a few years," he confirmed, "I just need a bit more time to train the perfect team for myself," he mentioned on.
"Another Galar guy?" Erika noted aloud.
"He must be with Chairman Rose," Ash realized, crossing his arms over his chest, "He's got the Macro Cosmos' logo on his jacket," he pointed out.
"So you and your sister happen to be the finalists of the first-ever Alola League," Bede said, making Calvin tense up a little, "Honestly, can you even begin to comprehend what kind of position you're in right now?" he inquired of the Ketchum boy.
"What are you trying to say?" he questioned back, narrowing his eyes.
"Hm," the curly-haired boy huffed again, "That you have no idea just what you're about to get yourself into…" he pointed out. Now it was Erika's turn to tense up. She stomped forward.
"Hey, I don't know who you think you are, but—!"
"Hey, it really is them!" a voice exclaimed excitedly, getting their attentions as they looked off to the side. Approaching was none other than Leon. Beside him was a dark-skinned boy with purple hair and bright yellow eyes. He wore a blue fur-rimmed jacket, with a black T-shirt and pants, the latter with two purple stripes on the sides, along with black, white and purple colored sneakers and a comparatively smaller, green duffel bag.
"Hey, Ash!" the Galar Champion Master called out.
"Leon!" the Pokémon Master greeted, turning to face the approaching man, "So Rose must've invited you for the finals, huh?" he presumed.
"Yeah," Leon responded, placing his hands onto his hips, "I hear he's inviting every champion from all across the world!" he mentioned excitedly, "At least, those who can make it," he added in correction, chuckling a little.
"Sounds like a little much, doesn't it?" Ash inquired aloud.
"Dad, who is this?" Calvin asked as he approached with his twin sister.
"Oh, sorry," their father apologized, stepping aside, "This is the Galar Region's Champion Master, Leon," he introduced.
"Nice to meet the two finalists," he remarked with a big smile, "Bet you're gonna have a real Champion Time!" he affirmed confidently as he winked.
"Uh… thank you…" Erika replied in gratitude, somewhat embarrassed and nervous.
"I'm Lee's little brother, Hop!" the young man beside Leon introduced suddenly, causing the twins to flinch in surprise, "When he told me about the fact that this region was gonna get its first champion, I was practically on my knees when asking him if I could come!" he pointed out emphatically.
"I brought you without a second thought, little bro…" the Galar Champion Master said with a chuckle, "Anyway," he continued, turning to the others, "the chairman's got us some VIP seats for tomorrow," he noted to the Ketchum family, "You're welcome to come by and see the action there," he offered.
"Thanks," Ash replied, "but we'll stick to the stands," he decided, "It's better to see the action up close, right?" he inferred as he grinned.
"Peekah!" Pikachu squeaked in agreement.
"Can't argue with that!" Leon agreed, laughing as well. Meanwhile, Bede narrowed his eyes in annoyance.
"Let's go, Hatenna," he advised of his partner, getting her attention as he turned around and walked away, with her following. Calvin glanced back at him curiously, wondering just what he was trying to do by starting a conversation with him.
"So is your little brother a gym challenger then?" Mirajane inquired as she looked over to Hop.
"Oh, uh, no…" he responded, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head, "Haven't really gotten endorsed yet…" he pointed out.
"Endorsed?" Calvin repeated in confusion.
"Galar's got a bit of a weird system compared to other regions," Leon chimed in, "Trainers who wanna take part in the Gym Challenge have to get an endorsement from either gym leaders or league officials," he explained, "Bit of a hassle, but it all works out in the end!" he assured, chuckling aloud.
"I'll get endorsed soon enough!" Hop declared, pulling out a Poké Ball from his pocket, enlarging it with a press of its button, "And then me and my partner are gonna aim for the top!" he added, opening the spherical container as its light spilled forth before the group onto the street. It shaped into form, dissipating to reveal a black ovine Pokémon with a thick coat of white wool that makes him look spherical. His small head poked out of the front of the wool, along with two short horns. His eyes had yellow sclera, black irises, and white, horizontal pupils. Two large ears were visible behind gray strings of wool that resembled braided pigtails. His wool covered his entire body and most of his short hooved legs, along with a tail that was barely visible on his rear end.
"Baahh!" he bleated in greeting.
"Oh! So cute~!" Erika sang out, much to the shock of her brother, who then chuckled.
"A Wooloo, huh?" Leslie noted aloud, while Rotom pulled up an image of the Sheep Pokémon upon its screen.
"Wooloo, the Sheep Pokémon," it began, "His curly fleece is such an effective cushion that this Pokémon could fall off a cliff and stand right back up at the bottom, unharmed. If his fleece grows too long, Wooloo won't be able to move. Cloth made with the wool of this Pokémon is surprisingly strong," it explained thoroughly.
"Wooloo and I are gonna be at the top in no time," Hop proclaimed, picking up the Sheep Pokémon in his arms, "And then, I'll battle every champ in the world, including my big bro!" he proclaimed on.
"Haha!" Leon laughed, "Bold call there…" he remarked, "But remember, you gotta get yourself endorsed first!" he pointed out, putting his left hand atop his little brother's head.
"I know that…" he grumbled out.
"Well, I guess we better get to our room the chairman booked for us," Leon said, "Come on, Hop," he beckoned, heading off.
"Uh, the hotel's that way…" Leslie pointed out, causing him to stop in his tracks.
"Huh…" Hop sighed, "You're pants with directions, Lee…" he grumbled out, "Anyway, nice meeting you all!" he remarked, heading off in the correct path with his older brother.
"See you around!" Ash called out.
"Galar, huh?" Calvin said, "I've heard about that place a lot these past few days…" he pointed out, getting the attentions of the others.
"Maybe you oughta' go there someday," Leslie suggested, "Might make for a whole new journey!" she pointed out additionally.
"Yeah, maybe…" her brother agreed, taking a moment to think. There was a lot he was left wondering about. But for now, he needed to get ready for the finals as they lurked ahead.
X
The next morning, a couple of boats had been docked at the harbor just outside of Malie City. Disembarking from one was a small, quadrupedal, rodent-like Pokémon that had a body that was almost entirely orange, with cream colorations on his lower forelimbs, snout, and tail, and green on the insides of his ears. He had beady brown eyes and a tiny nose. His forelimbs were considerably large, and he had a tuft of fur on top of his head. He sniffed around curiously.
"Pawmi!" a female voice called out, getting his attention as he perked up, "I told you not to go wandering off!" she noted. The Mouse Pokémon stood up barely on his hind legs before hopping up onto the particular person's shoulder. She was a young girl of a moderately tall stature.
She was wearing a school uniform that consisted of a white polo shirt with an orange-like emblem on her left shoulder, an orange tie, and orange shorts with vertical stripes and pockets. She also donned black leggings, a pair of red-and-white sneakers, and a black-and-red wrist glove over her right arm. She also had a green hair streak, as well as a black ponytail, orange eyes and several freckles above her nose.
"So this is the Alola region, huh?" she noted aloud, putting her hands onto her hips, "Who would've we'd wind up getting to go here before getting to do the Treasure Hunt, huh?" she pointed out to her partner upon her shoulder.
"Paww!" he squeaked out, making her giggle.
"You are the one who insisted on coming so passionately, Nemona," another female voice remarked, coming down from the ramp.
"Oh, La Primera!" the young girl exclaimed, seeing the figure approach. She was a woman who had dark skin with black hair and blue and yellow eyes. She wore a black pantsuit with socks and loafers of the same color, blue gloves and a yellow necktie on her blue shirt. Her right glove had a sun-like emblem on it.
"Still, I'm just as excited to see who winds up victorious at the end of all this," she admitted, "From what I've learned, these two children are quite something, even without regarding who their father is," she mentioned.
"Who cares about family?" Nemona inquired to the woman's surprise, "Doesn't matter who they're related to!" she remarked, "If they got this far on their journeys, then it was thanks to their own strength!" she affirmed with her hands at her hips.
"Hm," the woman before her chuckled out, "Perhaps we may run into them in town," she inferred as she started to walk off from the port.
"Ooh, do you think I'll get to battle one of them?!" the girl beside her inquired excitedly.
"Paww…" Pawmi shivered out nervously. Down toward the cape of Malie, Starbright was preparing a pink orb of energy while a golden aura wafted around her. She then fired it out, making it tear through the ocean before a huge gush of water burst into the air. Meanwhile, Lycanroc and Sandslash were exchanging blows with each other, being at deadlocks in several instances.
"Lurraaaahhh…" Lurantis echoed as she prepared an orb of yellow energy in front of herself, raising it above her head as Palossand loomed in front of her. She then stuck her right arm up onto the luminosity, turning it into a blade of light. She swung it down, striking the Sand Castle Pokémon in a fierce blast. As the dust settled though, she blinked in surprise to see her foe still standing, much to her disbelief as her eyes widened.
"Pah, loh!" he exclaimed, making his eyes flash a bright orange. All of a sudden, the ground cracked right at the Bloom Sickle Pokémon's feet, with light emerging from it. She noticed too late as the earth burst, knocking her off of her feet.
"Blimmm!" Drifblim giggled upon noticing. With a tick mark appearing upon her head, Lurantis shot to her feet and chased the Blimp Pokémon, swiping at him angrily as he kept giggling. Palossand just watched, letting a drop of sweat roll down the side of his head.
"Hmmm…" Erika hummed from afar, seated on a bench as she stared down at a tray of the various nectars found around Alola. Her Oricorio was staring at them as well. "Huh…" she sighed out, folding her arms over her chest, "I guess it's hard to really choose what form to go for when we don't know what Cal's doing…" she admitted.
"Koree…" the Dancing Pokémon chirped in agreement. Elsewhere, Primarina was seemingly teaching Starbright about how to effectively use Moonblast, raising her front fins up as a golden aura shrouded her, forming a pink orb of energy over her open mouth. Looking at her, Erika gave off a frown. She had somewhat already made a decision in regards to the Soloist Pokémon's role in the finals.
"Mag marr!" Magmar exclaimed from afar, thrusting his hands out as his trainer spotted him trying to form a yellowish-orange orb of energy upon his palms, "Magg…" he grunted out, only for the orb to burst, causing him to fall backwards onto his bottom.
"Magmar!" the Ketchum girl called out, getting up and hurrying over alongside Oricorio to check on the Spitfire Pokémon, who sat up dejectedly, "Are you okay?" she asked in concern.
"Marr…" he groaned out.
"He'zzz probably upset about losing to Gladion'zzz Lucario last night, zzt," Rotom buzzed as it floated over.
"That's nothing to be upset about!" Erika affirmed, "You did your best!" she noted to Magmar, "You can be proud of that for sure," she added confidently.
"Marrr…" the Spitfire Pokémon groaned again.
"Aw, geez…" his trainer muttered, putting her hands onto her hips.
"Not gonna be quick fix, huh?" Leslie's voice remarked, getting her attention as she saw her older sister approaching with Jangmo-o in her arms and Mortalius walking behind her.
"Magg?" Magmar uttered upon spotting his evolved form.
"We're just trying to figure things out before the finals…" Erika confirmed to her older sister, "I think I've a got in mind, but…" she kept going, exhaling a sigh, "I know some of my Pokémon really wanna get in on the action for… redemption or something…" she pointed out.
"Yeah, I hear ya," Leslie responded, while Jangmo-o hopped out of her arms to approach Magmar, who was getting back onto his feet.
"Jah, moh," he chirped to the Spitfire Pokémon, making him perk up.
"M-Magg…" he stammered out, rubbing the back of his head.
"Was he trying to learn a new move just now?" Leslie inquired of her little sister.
"Uh, I think so…" she responded. Mortalius then stepped forward, approaching his pre-evolution, who shivered with surprise and awe.
"M-M-Maggg…" he stammered again.
"Morr," the Magmortar advised, holding out his right, cannon-like arm and aiming it towards a mass of rocks nearby. Retracting his claws and opening the portion of his arm. He then formed a yellowish-orange orb of energy over it, firing it out. It blasted through the rocks with ease as everyone except for his trainer widened their eyes in shock.
"Focus Blast, huh?" she concluded, "That's a big move…" she commented, putting her hands onto her hips.
"That's what you're trying to learn how to do?" Erika inquired of her Magmar.
"Mag!" he confirmed with a nod. He held out his right hand again, trying to form the yellowish-orange orb of energy like his evolution.
"Morr, mortah!" he instructed firmly.
"Jah, jahng!" Jangmo-o cheered.
"Ree!" Oricorio chirped. However, the orb burst over the Spitfire Pokémon's palm again, making him fall onto the ground once more.
"Marrr…" he groaned out.
"Still no good, huh?" Erika noted.
"Hmmm…" her older sister hummed, rubbing her chin with her right hand, "I think I got an idea," she confirmed to her surprise.
"What is it?" she asked, arching an eyebrow.
"Gotta do some quick shopping first," Leslie pointed out, "Come on, Mortalius!" she beckoned of the Blast Pokémon.
"Mor!" he responded, turning to his pre-evolution, "Mag, mag mor," he advised of him, making him blink in surprise before seeing him head off.
"Hey, don't go leaving us in the dark like that!" Erika shouted, only for her sister and her partner to be long gone, "Huh…" she sighed deeply.
"I guezzz we should just keep training, zzt…" Rotom buzzed.
"Yeah, good idea," its user agreed, turning around, "I wonder how Calvin's doing…" she said, looking up toward the sky. Back at the Malie Garden, Toucannon was flying about with Hau's Noivern and Decidueye in pursuit of him, soaring about the sky. Below, Incineroar was holding off a charging Tauros, grabbing his horns with her hands to bring him to a halt, gritting her teeth all the while.
"That's it!" Calvin called out from afar, standing with his cousin. They watched as Tsareena hopped about the rocks on the water, while Raichu surfed after her as if it were a race. Gumshoos and Komala were resting in the sunlight together, and Araquanid and Ariel were swimming about the ponds themselves. Togedemaru and Mimi were running about as well, while Marowak was practicing his motions with his enflamed bone.
"Looks like everyone's in good spirits for tomorrow night," Hau remarked with his hands at his hips, "Did you decide how your team's gonna be set up?" he asked of the Ketchum boy.
"Uh, not completely…" he replied, "Incineroar's definitely gonna get a shot, and I'm leaning towards getting Tsareena and Mimi in, too," he told his cousin, "I'll probably go for Toucannon, Togedemaru, and…" he continued listing off, closing his eyes in thought, "Hmm…" he hummed with concern.
"Not sure who to use last, huh?" his cousin presumed.
"I wanna use Araquanid, but he's been through a lot of battles already…" Calvin pointed out, seeing the Water Bubble Pokémon swim over to Tsareena and Raichu, much to the Fruit Pokémon's embarrassment as he rubbed her head with his front right leg, "Maybe I use someone like Marowak again?" he suggested.
"How about Poliwhirl?" Hau inquired, "From what I heard, he's really raring to go!" he noted with clenched fists.
"I haven't gotten to use him in a serious battle yet though…" the Ketchum boy responded, "It's not like my dad's Kingler, who he didn't even use until his first tournament…" he mentioned, "Speaking of which, where—?" At that moment, the Tadpole Pokémon landed down in front of him upon his back. "Ah, Poliwhirl!" his trainer gasped out.
"Polll…" he grunted, sitting up and glaring toward Crabominable, who opened and closed his pincers as he chuckled.
"So you're training with Crabominable, huh?" Hau noted aloud, "He can get a little carried away and cocky sometimes…" he recalled.
"Poll!" Poliwhirl huffed out, determinedly rushing out at his opponent. He lunged out, attempting to tackle the Woolly Crab Pokémon. However, he immediately stuck his right pincer out to punch him, knocking him back onto the ground.
"Ah!" both boys watching gasped.
"Take it easy, Crabominable…" Hau insisted as he held his hands up.
"Crahahahah!" the Woolly Crab Pokémon laughed.
"Huh…" Calvin sighed, "If Poliwhirl was evolved, maybe I'd consider using him in the finals…" he admitted aloud.
"I feel like you'd use him regardless if he's so determined," another voice chimed in, causing him to perk up in surprise. He and Hau turned to see none other than Paige there.
"Paige!" they exclaimed.
"Yo," she greeted with a wave. Moments later, the three were seated on the grass together. "To think that it'd end up being between you and your twin sister," the silvery-haired girl remarked, "Bet the winner gets bragging rights, right?" she presumed, sharing a chuckle with her rivals.
"I know Erika's going to be coming at me with everything she's got, so I don't wanna be disrespectful to her by just bringing a Pokémon that isn't really on her team's level yet," he explained to his fellow trial-goers, while the Tadpole Pokémon continued to spar with Crabominable.
"That sounds like you for sure, cuz," Hau remarked with a chuckle.
"And you're not even taking a break for this battle, huh?" Paige inferred, looking around to see each and every one of her rival's Pokémon training their hardest if they weren't sleeping or otherwise, "Kinda reminds me of the last time I was here…" she admitted aloud, blushing a little.
"The last…?" Calvin started to repeat, only to blink in remembrance as he turned away and blushed himself. Hau looked between the two in confusion.
"You guys okay?" he asked of them.
"Uh, anyway…" the Ketchum boy began, composing himself, "What are you planning to do after the finals?" he inquired of the silvery-haired girl.
"Hmm…" she hummed out, "I guess I'll figure it out after the celebration…" she decided with a shrug, "Depending on who wins the whole win, I might have an idea in mind…" she added as she winked at Calvin.
"Haha!" Hau laughed, "Sounds like you, Paige!" he remarked, while his cousin sheepishly rubbed the back of his head.
"Polleee…!" Poliwhirl grunted as he tried to push against Crabominable, only to get shoved to the ground again. His trainer winced.
"Still not getting the oomph you need, huh?" Paige guessed, reaching into her pocket for something, "You know, I was hoping to probably save this for maybe another Pokémon I'd catch…" she admitted, "but I figure this should help you out a little," she noted, handing the Ketchum boy a blue stone with a color similar to water.
"A Water Stone?" Hau said, blinking in surprise.
"Consider it my extra way of saying thanks for our battle in the quarterfinals," Paige remarked to Calvin, "It's up to you whether or not you wanna use it now," she affirmed, "But don't end up going easy on your sister tomorrow," she advised seriously with a grin. The Ketchum boy blinked in surprise. He looked back at the stone in his hand, taking on a serious expression. He then stood up.
"Hey, Poliwhirl!" he called out, getting the attention of the Tadpole Pokémon as he hopped back onto his feet, hurrying over to his trainer.
"Wurl?" he croaked, noticing the stone in Calvin's hand.
"If you really wanna get involved in the battle tomorrow, then you're gonna need to really have a way to toughen up quick," he advised seriously of his partner.
"Pol, pollee wurl!" he responded eagerly, clenching his fists. His trainer nodded.
"Okay, here you go," he offered, allowing him to take the Water Stone. Holding it for a moment, the Tadpole Pokémon witnessed the stone start to glow before he did himself. His body grew slightly as he gained fingers, becoming much more muscular. When the light faded, it revealed that he had become a Poliwrath.
"WRAAAAAHHHHH!" he bellowed out, flexing his enhanced muscles. Calvin chuckled, while Hau and Paige awed the Tadpole Pokémon's evolved form. The other Pokémon in the area were somewhat surprised themselves.
"Okay, now let's back to it!" the Ketchum boy insisted of his evolved partner.
"Wrah!" Poliwrath croaked in response, making a charge toward Crabominable again, who yelped in surprise. Something told him it wouldn't be so easy to stop him now…

"Welcome, Ash!" Rose greeted as the Pokémon Master and his wife entered the V.I.P. section of Manalo Stadium, blinking in surprise to find Steven, Cynthia, Diantha, and Leon there as well, "I suppose you being here means you'll fill in for Lance until he arrives, along with Alder," he presumed.
"All of the Champion Masters of each region…" Ash noted as he looked around in surprise.
"Peekah, pi…" Pikachu squeaked out aboard his left shoulder, just as stunned.
"I figured Leon being here was just a professional courtesy since you're the head of Galar's PLF," his trainer pointed out to the chairman.
"Now what would be the fun in just bringing one champion along to witness the birth of Alola's first?" he retorted in question.
"It's not that I'm not grateful for opportunity to be here, but I believe this should be about the competitors, not us," Cynthia admitted, folding her arms over her chest.
"I agree," Steven confirmed, "This event already seems big enough with ONBS' broadcast and the volume of hype for whomever will take the title of being the first-ever Champion of the Alola Region," he added thoroughly, "Do we have to be propped up just to add more pressure to the finalists?" he inquired on.
"Oh come now, that's not what I'm trying to do at all…" Rose assured, holding his hands up, "I want everyone who can to see this event up close and personal, just to witness what kinds of trainers will help build the world's future," he explained to the Champion Masters.
"And what do you imagine that future to be like, Mister Chairman?" Diantha asked.
"One where we won't have to worry about things like energy or power," he answered, balling his hands into fists, "Trainers will thrive, especially after tomorrow night," he pointed out, "They'll all be vying for the seat of the newest champion and growing ever stronger!" he affirmed.
"W-Wait, hold on…" Mirajane stammered out, getting his attention, "I understand where you're going with this, but…" she continued, "you seem to be focused more on the future than the present we're in right now," she noted, "Shouldn't you and everyone be certain that my kids are comfortable going into tomorrow night?" she questioned of Rose, much to his surprise.
"My sentiments exactly," Steven agreed, "We'll let the people in the stands build up what'll surely be a spectacular event," he affirmed.
"Heh, heh!" Leon chuckled, "Yeah, that sounds great!" he agreed. The chairman sighed deeply, letting off a small grin.
"Well, I suppose this does seem like a little much…" he admitted, "Still, I do hope you'll attend the opening ceremony tomorrow…" he requested of the Champion Masters, "It won't be too extravagant, but this is a big event," he pointed out.
"Quite right, Chairman Rose," a voice agreed, getting everyone's attention as they turned to see the dark-skinned woman entering through the doorway alongside Oleana, "It makes me so glad to be able to witness the birth of this region's first champion," she remarked, putting her gloved right hand over her chest.
"Everyone, Champion Master Geeta of the Paldea Region has arrived," the assistant introduced, gesturing to the woman.
"Paldea?" Ash repeated aloud in confusion.
"Haha!" Rose chuckled, "To think that even the great Ash Ketchum's never heard of such a grand place!" he noted aloud.
"Well, I uh…" he stammered out, sheepishly scratching his left cheek. Geeta giggled.
"Don't worry, I'm not offended," she assured, "You've traveled to so many places," she pointed out, "It's only natural that you'd want to take a break of sorts," she mentioned, "especially considering that you have three children," she added on.
"And we're about to witness one of them become a champion tomorrow night…" Rose chimed in.
"Peekah…" Pikachu grumbled, a little annoyed that the chairman was seemingly ignoring the warnings from his trainer about making too big a deal about the finals.
"Oh, that reminds me…" Rose started to remembered, "weren't you bringing a guest along, Geeta?" he inquired of the Paldean Champion Master.
"I let her stick around in Malie for the day," she replied, "She'll be here for the battle tomorrow night," she promised. Out on the city's outskirts, Erika's Pokémon were cheering for Magmar, who was still trying to prepare a yellowish-orange orb of energy over his right palm. He concentrated intensely as sweat was trickling down his head, grabbing his arm with his left hand to maintain control.
"That's it!" his trainer complimented, with Rotom floating beside her, "Now let it fly!" she instructed.
"Maggg… MAR!" the Spitfire Pokémon exclaimed, launching the orb. However, it veered away from the rocks he intended to strike, instead harmlessly dropping into the ocean water in a splash. "Marrr…" he groaned, falling to his hands and knees in depression.
"Aw, man…" Erika uttered out.
"I guezzz Magmar'zzz control doesn't really matter if he doesn't have the power capable of handling Focuzzz Blast, zzt…" Rotom presumed.
"I know you're really trying hard, Magmar!" the Ketchum girl affirmed of her dejected partner, getting his attention, "We'll get that Focus Blast ready in no time, promise!" she vowed confidently.
"Marrr…" the Spitfire Pokémon whimpered out.
"Maybe Leslie ran off to get something to help him out, zzt," Rotom inferred, causing its user to perk up, "Since she'zzz trained a Magmar of her own before he evolved, she'zzz got a lot of experience there," it mentioned.
"Good point…" Erika agreed, folding her arms over her chest.
'So far, I've thought up at least three of my six Pokémon to use tomorrow…' she confirmed through her thoughts, looking around at the rest of her team, 'Lycanroc and Starbright are raring to go, and Lurantis really wants to step her game up after losing in the last couple of rounds…' she noted to herself, 'Palossand seems like a pretty good choice, too,' she added inwardly, 'And I'm sure Oricorio wants to take a shot at winning against Calvin…' she affirmed on, 'Which means…' she continued, looking over at Magmar again.
"Whoa, it really is you!" a voice exclaimed, causing the Ketchum girl to blink in surprise, "You are one of the two finalists in the tournament, right?!" Nemona inquired excitedly as she ran over, with Pawmi still hanging onto her left shoulder.
"Uh, huh?" Erika uttered, only for the freckled girl to suddenly zip right up to her and her Pokémon.
"Wow, this is your entire team?!" she presumed, looking around excitedly, "Man, I've never even seen some of these Pokémon before!" she pointed out, going from Primarina to Starbright to Sandslash to Magmar, "I bet they're all really strong!" she mentioned, "You gotta let me battle them!" she insisted, taking out a Poké Ball in her right hand.
"Uh… hold on a sec…" the Ketchum girl said, holding her hands up.
"Oh, right!" Nemona yelped in realization, "You're gonna need your team at a hundred percent for tomorrow night…" she noted sheepishly, "So then, why don't I battle the ones you're not gonna use?" she requested. Erika grimaced a little.
"Excuse me, zzt," Rotom buzzed, getting the freckled girl's attention, "Who are you?" it asked.
"Oh, there I go running my mouth again!" she remarked, bonking herself on the head with her right hand, "Name's Nemona!" she introduced, "And you're Erika Ketchum, right?" she inquired of the trial-goer.
"Uh, yeah," she responded with a nod.
"Perfect!" the freckled girl exclaimed, "I actually came here as a guest to see your big battle with your brother tomorrow night," she told her, "It's gonna be all kinds of epic!" she affirmed excitedly, pumping her left fist up.
"Thanks, I guess…" Erika responded unsurely.
"So, you still up for a battle?" Nemona offered, "I'm sure some practice with another trainer won't kill ya…" she remarked.
"I… uh…" the Ketchum girl stuttered.
'It's not that I don't want to battle, I'm just so occupied with trying to figure a lot of things out…' she noted to herself, 'I've never met anyone that's this passionate about battling before…' she mentioned on, 'And…' she continued, only to end up spotting Pawmi upon the freckled girl's shoulder.
"Paw?" he squeaked out. Erika's eyes sparkled.
"So cute~!" she sang out girlishly, causing some of her Pokémon to give off looks of surprise at her sudden change in tone.
"Heheheh!" Nemona chuckled, "You like my Pawmi, huh?" she presumed, looking over at the Mouse Pokémon, "Caught this little guy not too long ago," she recalled, scratching his chin as he cooed with delight, "He's a bit of a handful…" she admitted with a grin.
"Pawww…" Pawmi cooed out.
"I've never seen that Pokémon before…" Erika noted as she looked closely at the Mouse Pokémon, "Rotodex, do you know anything?" she asked of her Pokédex, who floated over. It scanned Pawmi, while Nemona gave off a surprised expression. After a moment…
"I've got no data, zzt…" it confirmed.
"Wait, really?" its user inquired, "I thought you got updated with data on Pokémon from those other regions…" she pointed out, raising an eyebrow, "Are you sure it's not from Galar or something?" she questioned, folding her arms over her chest. The ponytailed girl behind her laughed, getting her attention.
"Nah, this little one's from mi hogar, Paldea," she told the Ketchum girl, "Here, I can show you what he's all about," she affirmed, reaching into her pocket to pull out what appeared to be a black smartphone. However, Erika noticed the protrusions upon it, making it similar to a Rotom. It even had a face like one. It floated up in front of her and Nemona, showing off an image of Pawmi.
"Pawmi, the Mouse Pokémon," it began, "He has underdeveloped electric sacs on his cheeks. These sacs can produce electricity only if Pawmi rubs them furiously with the pads on his forepaws. The pads of his paws are electricity-discharging organs. Pawmi fires electricity from his forepaws while standing unsteadily on his hind legs," it explained thoroughly.
"Huh…" Erika uttered in surprise.
"Gotta admit, I've never seen a Rotom Phone like yours," Nemona remarked, looking back at the Pokédex, "Seems pretty bulky, too…" she pointed out.
"I'm not a phone, zzt…" Rotom buzzed out in exasperation.
"Eh-heh, sorry…" the ponytailed girl apologized with a laugh, "Anyways, back to the main topic," she continued, turning to Erika, "Will you please let me battle you?!" she requested insistently, causing her to flinch, "I might not be Champion-ranked yet, but getting to battle someone so close to the title would make for a great experience!" she pointed out excitedly.
"N-Now hold on…" the Ketchum girl stuttered, "I was kinda in the middle of something with my team here…" she pointed out, looking back at her Magmar as he attempted to ready another yellowish-orange orb of energy over his right palm.
"Oh, you're trying to go for a Focus Blast with your Magmar, huh?" Nemona assumed as she approached curiously, "Seems like a lot for him to pull off…" she noted on, putting her right hand onto her chin. The Spitfire Pokémon took a deep breath, concentrating as his eyes closed. They then jolted open, followed by him firing the orb off towards the pile of rocks nearby. However, it barely wound up missing, striking a tree in the distance instead and knocking it over.
"Magg…" he groaned out.
"Hey, you got that power down!" the ponytailed girl complimented, getting his attention, "Aim'll get better soon enough for sure," she affirmed, "It seems hard, but that's the way some moves are," she pointed out, "You remember what the Pokédex said about Pawmi, right?" she inquired of Erika, causing her to blink in surprise, "He's got a hard time standing up with those heavy paws of his, so I gotta make sure he uses every ounce of power he's got when the moment comes," she explained, folding her arms over her chest, "It's the same with every Pokémon," she mentioned, "They've all got their limits and weaknesses," she noted, "But at the same time, they've got so many strengths," she added, "Huh…" she sighed happily, "Pokémon battling, right?" she remarked, looking up at the partly cloudy sky overhead as she placed her hands onto her hips, "You never know what's gonna happen…" she said.
"You're… really passionate about this stuff, huh?" the Ketchum girl presumed.
"Well, duh!" Nemona responded, clenching her gloved right hand into a fist, "I wanna be a champ myself one day!" she affirmed, "That means battling all sorts of trainers and learning all sorts of things!" she mentioned.
"Paw!" her Pawmi squeaked in agreement. Erika took a moment to think. Reflecting on her journey, she never cared once for Pokémon battles. Even when she received her first couple of Pokémon, she felt as if she couldn't care less. But it all changed after she met Tapu Koko again.
It was a rude wake-up call for her, making her realize just how selfish and bratty she had been. She then grew into a fine trainer and battled many different trainers, learning new things and adapting with time. Even when she got knocked down, she would persevere and get back up. And it made her smile a little.
"You know what?" she said, making Nemona blink, "I'm up for giving you a battle," she confirmed, much to the ponytailed girl's surprise as she gasped a little, "But don't think I'll go easy on you," she remarked additionally. Her future opponent chuckled a little.
"I wouldn't have it any other way!" she confirmed in response, readying a Poké Ball in her right hand, "Battles are the most fun when you're giving it your all!" she proclaimed. Erika nodded in agreement.
"Are you sure this is okay, zzt?" Rotom asked in concern.
"Yeah, don't worry," its user reassured as a reply, "I'll save the energy for tomorrow's team," she affirmed, "Sandslash, you wanna get a battle in?" she offered of the Alolan Mouse Pokémon, getting his attention.
"Slah!" he responded, hopping to his feet and heading over to stand in front of his trainer. The others watched on curiously, wondering just what kind of battle was about to unfold before them. Nemona cracked a grin.
"Go, Goodra!" she exclaimed, side-arming her Poké Ball out. It burst open, and its light shot out and formed upon the ground, dissipating to reveal the Dragon Pokémon.
"Gooo!" she bellowed.
"A Goodra, huh?" Erika noted aloud.
"Goodra, the Dragon Pokémon," Rotom buzzed, having brought up an image of the Dragon Pokémon upon its screen, "Goodra gets picked on because she's meek. But then, whoever teased her gets to feel the full force of her horns and a good swatting from her thick tail. Underneath Goodra's slimy skin is a thick layer of fat, and the combination of the two makes enemies' attacks slide right off," it explained thoroughly.
"Type advantages aren't everything you know," Nemona remarked, punching her left hand determinedly, "If we wanna get to the top someday, we're gonna have to take on all sorts of challenges!" she affirmed.
"Goo durraahh!" the Dragon Pokémon before her echoed in agreement.
"I hear ya," Erika responded, "But we're not losing!" she vowed firmly.
"Slahh!" Sandslash exclaimed, sharpening his claws against each other. Meanwhile, Leslie was returning to the outskirts with a red gift bag in hand. She stopped in surprise to see her little sister engaged in a battle against the ponytailed girl. But seeing the smile upon her face prompted her to smile as well. Her nerves had gotten soothed at last.

"Hah…" Hau sighed out after taking a bite of his malasada, "These are always the best…" he affirmed while chewing, "especially with the powdered sugar, too!" he mentioned happily.
"You'd think you'd go for ice cream in this weather…" Paige remarked with a chuckle. The two of them were seated outside the ice cream stand, respectively enjoying their treats. Calvin ate his chocolate and vanilla bowl of ice cream contently. With Poliwrath's evolution, he now had a full team in place for tomorrow night's battle.
"Hey, have you guys heard anything from Lillie?" Hau asked curiously.
"Figured she was still taking care of her mom, crazy as she was…" Paige replied, licking her strawberry ice cream cone.
"Yeah, Gladion said she's staying at Aether Paradise to take care of Miss Lusamine," Calvin confirmed, getting his rivals' attentions, "I'm sure she would've wanted to come and cheer us on…" he mentioned somewhat sadly.
"Even after everything that happened, Lillie still thinks of helping others over helping herself…" the silvery-haired girl pointed out, taking another lick of her desert, "She's pretty amazing in her own way, isn't she?" she assumed.
"Yeah, totally!" Hau agreed, sharing a chuckle with her. The Ketchum boy smiled. Lillie had to face her own challenges. And she overcame them with her determination and her friends.
'I wish you were here, Lillie…' he admitted inwardly.
"Hey, there he is!" a voice suddenly shouted, causing him to perk up along with the others.
"What's going on?" Hau wondered aloud. He and his fellow trial-goers gasped at the sea of paparazzi at the bridge, with one man pointing over to the trio seated by the ice cream stand.
"It's really him! The Calvin Ketchum who's in the finals tomorrow!" he noted excitedly.
"Let's get an interview and pictures!" another female reporter insisted as she and the others hurried over the bridge.
"Hey, don't push!" one man yelled. The Ketchum boy grimaced, seeing the people surround him from all sides.
"Kid, how's it feel to be in the finals in your first-ever tournament?!" one reporter asked.
"Are you worried about what kinda tactics your sister might pull on you?!" a woman inquired.
"How does it feel getting this far in the tournament?!" someone else questioned.
"H-Hey!" Hau stammered out, having been pushed out from the paparazzi along with Paige.
"We're trying to relax here, dammit!" she shouted angrily. Unfortunately, it fell on deaf ears as the reporters kept swarming, asking question after question without giving him a chance to properly respond.
"Morpeko, Aura Wheel!" a voice yelled out. Charging towards the sea of paparazzi was the Two-Sided Pokémon, who formed a light blue wheel of energy around her body that sparked with yellow electricity. She rammed into them, zapping them fiercely as they screamed. Calvin, Hau and Paige gasped, seeing most of the reporters fall down.
"Ow, ow…" one of them grumbled out, "Hey, who's Pokémon is this?!" he shouted, pointing toward Morpeko as she had come to a stop.
"You can't stop the freedom of the press!" another woman proclaimed.
"SHUT YER GOBS!" Marnie's voice bellowed angrily, causing the paparazzi to all flinch. Calvin looked up at the girl who approached, as her Morpeko made her way over to her side. "Can't ya see he's just tryin' to relax before the big day tomorrow?" she inquired of the paparazzi, picking up her partner in her arms, "Have some common decency and bugger off," she insisted of them. The group of reporters looked to each other, wondering what exactly to do.
"Well… I guess it doesn't help to look needy…" one of them finally said.
"WE'RE SORRY!" they all exclaimed, taking off with their cameras and microphones in tow.
"Huh…" Marnie exhaled afterward, "Thanks for that, Morpeko," she said gratefully to the Two-Sided Pokémon in her arms.
"Mor, mor pek!" she squeaked in response as she smiled.
"Uh… thank you…" Calvin chimed in, getting their attentions, "I should've handled it myself, but I appreciate the help…" he mentioned, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head. The pigtailed girl walked up to him, making him flinch. "Um… we haven't met, have we?" he presumed of her, blushing a little.
"Name's Marnie," she introduced, "This little girl here's Morpeko," she added, looking to the Two-Sided Pokémon.
"Pek!" she squeaked in greeting.
"Kinda looks like a Pikachu in a way!" Hau noted as he came over with Paige.
"She seems pretty strong, too," the silvery-haired girl mentioned.
"Thanks," Marnie replied, "We're training before the Gym Challenge in Galar gets started a while from now," she pointed out. Hearing that, Calvin blinked in surprise.
"The Gym Challenge?" Hau repeated in confusion, arching an eyebrow.
"Oh, I guess I never told you guys," Paige chimed in, "The Galar Region's famous for its gyms," she pointed out, "Like a lot of regions, trainers can challenge them and get badges in order to make it to the Pokémon League," she explained to her fellow trial-goers.
"Yeah, I heard the same thing from the Champion Master of the region last night," Calvin noted in remembrance.
"Wicked, you met Leon?!" Marnie exclaimed in question, "Didn't even know he was gonna show up…" she admitted, "Though I guess it makes sense with the chairman here…" she pointed out, "Bet a lotta people are gonna be watchin' you tomorrow night," she added, "Just thinking about that kinda pressure makes me a little nervous…" she confessed, holding Morpeko close, "How's it that you're dealin' with it?" she inquired of the Ketchum boy in front of her, as he blinked in surprise. He thought back to his own experiences throughout the island challenge, even before that when he first received Litten. There was a lot that had happened. And it was a roller coaster of an experience.
He struggled. It was hard to be a good trainer when he was under the weight of expectations from practically everyone who saw him as just someone in his father's shadow. But over time, he grew out of that shadow, forging his own path with his team. The journey had its bumps, but he persevered thanks to his team. And they were always going to be behind him, no matter what.
"I just know every one of my Pokémon is behind me," he told Marnie, who blinked in surprise, "Even if some of them aren't battling tomorrow, I know they're rooting for me to give my all," he affirmed, clenching his right fist, "So I'm not that intimidated by a ton of crazy fans," he said, "Though the paparazzi's another story…" he admitted additionally, earning a giggle out Paige and Hau. The pigtailed girl let off a small smile.
"You're really somethin'," she remarked to the Ketchum boy, "Do yer best out there," she insisted, turning around and heading off, with a tiny smile upon her face.
"Thanks! Later!" Calvin called out in farewell. He noticed the dusk orange sky in the distance. "Wow…" he uttered, "Didn't realize it was so late…" he confessed.
"Time flies when you're training," Paige remarked, "Let's get ourselves back to Lanakila," she advised of her fellow trial-goers, "We'll probably run into Erika there," she pointed out.
"Right," Calvin agreed, heading off with his friends in tow.

"Hah… hah…" Erika and Nemona breathed out tiredly at the outskirts of Malie. The former of the two was very impressed with her ponytailed foe. Though she wound up winning the three-on-three battle they had without losing a single Pokémon, her freckled opponent had given her quite a tough time.
"Can't believe you pulled off something like that with a Dunsparce…" the Ketchum girl noted, wiping the sweat off of her brow as she sighed with relief.
"Hahaha!" Nemona laughed, "Hey, you're the one who won!" she pointed out, "I should be complimenting you!" she affirmed, looking at her Poké Ball in her right hand, "I haven't had a serious battle like that in a while…" she confessed aloud, "I mean, I've still got a few Pokémon I could bring out…" she mentioned, making Erika grimace, "but I think I'll save them for another time," she decided, much to the Ketchum girl's relief as she sighed deeply. Just then, she heard applause from nearby, getting her attention.
"Not bad, Sis," Leslie remarked upon approaching, "I think you've got things on lock for tomorrow night," she pointed out.
"Leslie…" Erika uttered.
"Welcome back, zzt!" Rotom buzzed, while Jangmo-o hurried over like an excited puppy to the Unova Champion Master, wagging his tail as he approached. She giggled, crouching down to pet him on the head.
"So, who's your new friend?" she asked her little sister curiously.
"Oh, this is—" Before Erika could introduce the ponytailed girl, she suddenly sped over to Leslie in an instant.
"I'm Nemona!" she introduced as the older Ketchum girl flinched in shock, standing back up, "I'm a huge fan of you and your dad and would really love the chance to battle you right now!" she exclaimed rather quickly.
"Whoa, slow down…" Leslie insisted, holding her hands up, "Didn't you just finish a battle with my sister?" she inquired.
"I've got other Pokémon!" the freckled girl assured, "And if you want, I can get a whole new team together just like that!" she affirmed on.
"That girl doesn't seem to know the word moderation, zzt…" Rotom bluntly pointed out.
"Eheheheh…" its user chuckled. She found Nemona's battle-ready personality endearing. It was what she imagined all trainers being like at first, when she didn't want to be one herself. But now she met someone just like that, it actually wasn't so bad.
"I should've known you'd be looking for the finalists once you and I parted for the day," a voice chimed in, getting the group's attention as they turned to see Geeta approaching alongside Ash and Mirajane, "You can't help yourself, can you, Nemona?" she inquired of the ponytailed girl.
"L-La Primera!" she stammered in surprise, "Uh, sorry…" she apologized, "Guess I got a bit carried away…" she admitted, "In fact, I already battled Erika here…" she confessed on sheepishly, scratching her right cheek.
"Oh?" the Paldea Champion Master uttered in surprise, "And what has our island challenger thought of your battling skills?" she wondered aloud curiously, turning to the young Ketchum girl, who blinked in surprise.
"She's… really good," she complimented, "Even though she lost, she and her team gave us a hard time…" she pointed out.
"Well, that's quite the news to hear…" Geeta admitted, while Nemona's eyes sparkled as she teared up.
'You're the best, Erika!' she exclaimed inwardly, shooting a thumbs-up toward the young Ketchum girl, who chuckled sheepishly.
"So how's everything looking, Dad?" Leslie asked of Ash, getting his attention.
"All good," he replied, putting his hands onto his hips, "It's gonna be a big night tomorrow," he pointed out, looking over to his youngest daughter, "but I'm sure you and Calvin are gonna be ready for it," he affirmed confidently. She nodded in response.
"Speaking of getting ready…" her older sister chimed in, reaching into the red gift bag to pull something out. It was a small red box with what appeared to be a glowing orange light in its center. Spotting it, Magmar perked up.
"What's that?" Erika asked curiously.
"A Magmarizer," Leslie answered, "Had to find it at a market, but it was worth the price," she pointed out. Just then, the Spitfire Pokémon hurried over, reaching his hands out for the red box. "Oh, hold on!" the Unova Champion Master yelped, tossing the object to her little sister, who caught it. Magmar screeched to a halt in surprise.
"M-Mag…?" he stammered out, blinking in confusion.
"If you wanna evolve and get stronger, Erika should be sure you're ready for it," Leslie told him.
"Evolve?" her little sister repeated.
"That Magmarizer izzz what can evolve Magmar into Magmortar, zzt!" Rotom buzzed to her, making her blink in surprise, "Like how Starbright and Sandslash evolved with Evolution Stonezzz!" it mentioned.
"Hmm…" the Ketchum girl hummed. She then walked over to the Spitfire Pokémon. "Magmar…" she uttered, causing him to perk up, "You really wanna battle tomorrow, don't you?" she presumed.
"Marr!" her partner responded firmly with a nod. She smiled.
"Then here you go," she offered, handing him the Magmarizer. He took it into his grasp, feeling its warmth wash over his body. He started glowing in a fiery red light along with the red box, his form changing. He became more heavyset, with his arms taking on a cannon-like shape. As the light faded, it revealed that he had into a Magmortar as intended.
"MORRRRRRRRRRRRR!" he bellowed out. Everyone marveled the evolution, smiling brightly. The newly evolved Blast Pokémon then aimed his right arm towards the pile of rocks nearby, retracting his claws and opening the port. A yellowish-orange orb of energy formed in front of it, which he fired instantaneously. It blasted the rocks apart, much to everyone's shock.
"ALRIGHT!" his trainer exclaimed. Her other Pokémon cheered excitedly, gathering around their evolved teammate as he blinked in surprise. He then sheepishly grinned, somewhat embarrassed by all the praise.
"Awesome…!" Nemona uttered out as her eyes sparkled. Geeta chuckled, standing alongside Ash.
"I have the feeling tomorrow's going to be quite the day," she remarked, getting the Pokémon Master's attention.
"Yeah," he agreed.
"Pikah!" Pikachu squeaked out.

"Ugh…" Hop groaned out while standing at a street corner, "Where the heck are you, Lee?!" he yelled in question, "You could've at least brought Charizard out to make sure you didn't get yourself lost!" he pointed out, quite frustrated as he sighed.
"Hop?" a voice chimed in, getting his attention as he turned to see Calvin there with Hau and Paige in tow, "What's going on?" he asked in concern.
"Oh, hey Calvin!" the purple-haired boy greeted, "I just finished having some dinner with my big bro, and he took off to check out the city," he explained, rubbing the back of his head, "He said he'd be back in five minutes, but it's been twenty…" he pointed out additionally.
"I always heard that Galar's champ was a bit backwards when it came to directions…" Paige noted in remembrance.
"You want us to help you look for him?" Calvin offered.
"Oh, that'd be great!" Hop eagerly replied, "We can split up and go in all directions, too!" he added in instruction.
"Then I guess I'll go up north!" Hau decided.
"I'll head south," Paige confirmed.
"In that case, I'll go west and see if he's heading for the stadium," Hop told the group, "Calvin, checking the harbor's not a problem, right?" he inquired of the Ketchum boy.
"Yeah, no problem here," he assured as a response. The group of four split up to find the Galar Champion Master. He himself was actually at the harbor, tilting his head in confusion.
'I could've sworn it was a left turn back to the restaurant…' he noted to himself, putting his hands onto hips and sighing aloud.
"I know Hop's gonna chew me out…" he mentioned as he looked up to the starry sky. A ferry had just pulled into port, with passengers disembarking. He took notice, seeing them pass by. One in particular was hurrying off before she tripped at the end of the ramp, about to fall flat on her face. Luckily, Leon was there to catch her. "Whoa, you okay?" he inquired in concern immediately.
"Yes, thank you…" the girl responded, being none other than Lillie as she stood up, "I'm just really excited to be here," she pointed out.
"I see," the Galar Champion Master said, cracking a grin, "Here for the finals tomorrow, right?" he presumed.
"Mm-hmm!" Lillie replied with a nod, "The two finalists happen to be close friends of mine…" she noted on, "I was watching their matches on TV and thought that… well…" she continued, blushing a little, "it would be better if I were here to support them in person," she concluded. Leon smiled.
"That's kind of you," he pointed out, causing her to blink in surprise, "Come on," he beckoned, "Maybe if we wander around a bit more, we'll find 'em," he inferred.
"Um, okay…" the blonde-haired girl responded, "But… do you know where you're going?" she inquired.
"No clue!" Leon answered, giving her a thumbs-up and a wink. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of her head.
"Hey!" a voice called out, getting their attentions as they looked over to see Calvin hurrying down the steps to the port. Lillie's eyes slightly widened as they sparkled.
"Well, looks like we found our guide," Leon remarked. The blonde-haired girl ran forward.
"Calvin!" she exclaimed. The Ketchum boy blinked in surprise.
"L-Lillie?" he stuttered before suddenly being tackled into a big hug by his friend, who wrapped her arms around him warmly. She sniffled a little as happy tears pricked her eyes.
"I'm so glad to see you after so long…" she confessed, smiling a little. Calvin's eyes shook as he blushed a little. But he smiled, too.
"Yeah…" he agreed, hugging her back.
"Aw… are you sure I can't have a battle against one of the world's greatest trainers, Primera?" Nemona inquired pleadingly to Geeta as they walked alongside the Ketchum family down the streets of Malie.
"Consider your own Pokémon's feelings, Nemona," the Paldea Champion Master advised, "They're obviously worn out after getting to battle a trainer who's at the pinnacle of becoming a champion herself," she pointed out.
"Paw, paw me," Pawmi squeaked in agreement. His trainer grimaced with embarrassment.
"Yeah… you're right…" she concluded, "Sorry…" she apologized.
"No worries!" Ash assured, "We'd be happy to battle you another time," he promised, causing her to perk up excitedly.
"I too would be happy to have the chance to challenge you," Geeta chimed in, getting his attention, "That is, if you'll allow me to," she corrected.
"Of course!" the Pokémon Master responded.
"Peekah, pika!" Pikachu squeaked, letting his cheeks spark. Mirajane giggled.
"Tomorrow's going to be quite the day, huh?" she inferred.
"Yeah…" Leslie agreed, looking ahead at her little sister, "Who would've thought she and Calvin would make it this far…?" she inquired aloud, "All of us are doing way better than Dad did when he started out," she mentioned.
"Hey…" Ash said upon overhearing, earning giggles from both his wife and eldest daughter.
"I'm proud of them both," the latter confirmed, "Whatever happens in the end, they've done their best," she added. Mirajane nodded in agreement.
"So, what Pokémon do think Calvin'zzz gonna use tomorrow?" Rotom asked, floating beside Erika.
"Hmm…" she hummed out, folding her arms over her chest, "Well…" she began.
"Hey, cuz!" Hau's voice called out, getting her attention as she saw her cousin ahead of the group, waving to them alongside Paige and Hop. A moment later, they conversed over the current predicament they were facing.
"Leon got lost?" Ash inquired, arching an eyebrow.
"Well, that's no surprise…" Leslie noted aloud.
"Huh…" Hop sighed with exasperation, "It wouldn't be such a big deal if he at least had one of his Pokémon out to get him back…" he muttered, folding his arms behind his head.
"I'm sure we'll find him soon," Mirajane assured, "That reminds me, wasn't Calvin with you?" she inquired of her nephew and the silvery-haired girl.
"He went down to the port to look for Leon just a bit ago…" Hau answered, "Maybe he's still there?" he presumed unsurely.
"Guys!" a familiar voice called out, causing them to blink in surprise as they turned. Erika widened her eyes. Her brother was waving to her, walking alongside Leon and Lillie.
"Hi, Erika!" the blonde-haired girl greeted with a bright smile.
"Lillie!" the young Ketchum girl exclaimed, running over excitedly to embrace her friend, who yelped in surprise. They then laughed, holding each other close. "What are you doing here?" Erika asked, "Weren't you supposed to be taking care of your mom back on Aether Paradise like Gladion said?" she questioned on.
"She's doing fine," Lillie assured, pulling herself back, "Not completely better…" she corrected, "but fine enough," she affirmed as Calvin came over, "She was watching the tournament with me and thought it'd be best if I came to support you two," she explained.
"Lillie…" Erika uttered out.
"It's great that you're here!" Hau chimed in as he approached, "You're gonna see just how strong Cal and Eri got!" he affirmed confidently.
"Yeah, for sure!" Paige agreed. Everyone looked on with smiles.
"Thizzz callzzz for a photo!" Rotom buzzed, "Say cheezzze, everyone!" it insisted, turning around to aim its camera at the others, snapping a picture. It was mainly of Calvin and Erika, who were laughing with Lillie. The Pokédex did take other pictures, doing one of the Champion Masters, another with Hau, Paige, Hop, and Nemona, and finally, one with the whole Ketchum family. The twins looked to each other, sharing a smile. Tomorrow was going to be the biggest night of their lives…

Opens at Aether Paradise as Lillie is with her bedridden mother, sleeping by her side. In her dreams, she's imagining becoming a Pokémon Trainer herself, journeying through regions with her Pokémon by her side. She starts running along the pathway, excitedly smiling all the while.
Throughout her journey in her dream, she comes across many great things. She encounters amazing Pokémon, strong trainers to battle, and memorable sights. Her Pokémon of choice is a Clefairy which she happily lifts in her hands.
All of a sudden, the area around them darkens as a shadow looms over them. Lillie looks up in horror to see a giant version of Lusamine engulfed by Nihilego overhead. She cowers in fright momentarily, but then notices a bright light shining up above.
It turns out to be Solgaleo, who comes down with Calvin and Erika aboard. They both offer their hands to Lillie, who happily accepts them as she climbs onto the Sunne Pokémon. They hurry off, avoiding the giant rocks Lusamine chucks their way. One is about to strike, but it's destroyed as Gladion appears aboard Silvally, slashing it apart.

Let me tell you guys, it's pretty hard to write a setup chapter after so many battles. But hey, I'm happy to have gotten it done. As of the time this chapter's been drafted, I'm going to be heading to a wedding for the weekend.
This being done helps shave off a lot of time, especially considering the releases I'm expecting to have completed for the rest of the year. "Power", "Space", "Omni Force: ORIGINS", and especially this story are getting a lot of attention from. So I'm hoping that you'll enjoy them, too!
Here's a summary to hold you over until next time!
