Cobra suspected as much. "You want them close so I can read them, correct?"
Mirajane nodded. "I know you have quite the impressive range, but even you might find it difficult to concentrate if they were, say, miles away. I want to make sure it's as accurate as possible, which is why we're doing it like this." Cobra mulled over her words. Sometimes she seemed to have a scarily good grasp on his magic. Although with what she just said, she was missing an important part. No matter how far away someone was, if he knew them well it wouldn't matter, he'd still be able to hone in on just them. Not that he was going to share any of that information now.
"Both of these lacrima have been tampered with, by the way." She moved on to explain the orbs, gesturing to the one in front of them. "They won't be able to see you two concretely, just as faint outlines. Your voices will also be modified, so they won't be able to guess your identities either. Of course, this works on their end as well."
"...Is what would be the case, if not for..."
"Precisely!" Mira made no effort to hide her enthusiasm at what she must have thought was a clever little loophole. Cobra resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
"On the room on the other side is a lacrima like this one with a table and chair. I put some fairy lights in there for atmosphere, but otherwise, there's nothing that would indicate where the people who are answering the questions are from." She paused to look pointedly at Cobra. What, did she expect a thank-you for all this? Well, he was at least grateful it wasn't just a screen like they apparently did for confessionals. Nonetheless, he remained standing as Mira went on to explain the rest.
