He warily opened the door into the listening room and was relieved that his soul reading was right and that Lucy was sitting inside. Wrappers from food and a half-empty bottle of tea sat on the table, while Lucy herself leaned forward, absorbed in the book she was reading. Cobra took a careful step inside. Then another. Then…another?
She still didn't give any sign of acknowledgment even as he stood to the side of her at the table. Her eyes never strayed from the page. Part impressed and part concerned, Cobra began to pull the chair out to sit down.
At the screech of the chair legs grinding across the wood floor, Lucy finally whipped her head around to stare, eyes wide in clear panic. Hands reached for her keys as Cobra put up his hands cautiously. "Easy, easy. It's just me."
She held herself in panic for another breath. Then he could feel her heart rate slow, her mind taking in what she was seeing. Lucy put a hand to her chest and exhaled. "You…how did I not even hear you…"
"Happens. Good enough book for you to get lost in?"
"It's alright." She turned back around, not meeting his eyes. He sat in the chair. Then they both sat in silence.
