Way up above them, Harry glided over the game, squinting for the Snitch. Jade watched as Angelina scored and Harry looped to show his excitement. Now he searched again for the Snitch.
"Slytherin is in possession," Lee Jordan said.
Jade cheered for her team but remained quiet as Jordan spoke again. "Chaser Pucey ducks two Bludgers, two Weasleys, and Chaser Bell and speeds towards the... wait a moment... was that the Snitch?"
A murmur ran through the crowd as Adrian Pucey dropped the Quaffle. He was too busy looking over his shoulder at the gold flash that passed his left ear. Harry seemed to see it, as he dived downwards after the golden streak. Slytherin Seeker Terence Higgs saw it, too. Neck and neck they hurtled towards the Snitch... all the Chasers seemed to have forgotten what they were supposed to do as they hung in mid-air to watch. Harry was faster than Higgs and added an extra spurt of speed to his broom till... WHAM! A roar of rage echoed from the Gryffindors... Marcus Flint had intentionally blocked Harry, and Harry's broom spun off course. Harry held on for dear life.
'Oh, wow this is more interesting than I originally thought...' Jade thought as she stood up.
Hagrid finally noticed her but hadn't talked to her yet.
"Foul!" screamed the Gryffindors.
Madam Hooch spoke angrily to Flint and ordered a free shot at the goalpost for Gryffindor. But in all the confusion, the Golden Snitch disappeared again.
Down in the stands, Dean Thomas yelled, "Send him off, ref! Red card!"
"This isn't football, Dean," Ron and Jade reminded him at the same time finally agreeing on something for once."You can't send people off in Quidditch, and what's a red card?"
But Hagrid was on Dean's side.
"They oughta change the rules. Flint coulda knocked Harry outta the air."
Lee Jordan found it difficult not to take sides. "So... after that obvious and disgusting cheating..."
"Jordan!" growled Professor McGonagall.
"I mean, after that open and revolting foul..."
"Jordan, I'm warning you!"
"All right, all right. Flint nearly killed the Gryffindor Seeker, which could happen to anyone, I'm sure, so a penalty to Gryffindor, taken by Spinnet, who puts it away, no trouble, and we continue to play, Gryffindor still in possession."
It was as Harry dodged another Bludger that went spinning dangerously past his head that it happened. His broom lurched suddenly. For a split second, everyone thought he would fall. Jade however immediately cast a sticking charm from her seat to Potter's broom so his hands could never leave the broom. Jade noticed Snape's hyper-focused stare on Harry, but it was different from how he normally looked at him. Unlike what Hermione said to her and Ron, Snape hadn't been the cause. He was trying to stop the broom from bucking him off or killing him. However, right next to him was Professor Quirrell, who stared at Harry with the same focus and murderous look. Jade's eyes widened in shock and she bolted away from the Gryffindors to find Draco and ask him how to stop them.
"DRACO!" She yelled as she entered the Slytherin area.
Soon enough she'd found him laughing at Harry. He'd, however, heard her as she got closer and stopped laughing as he realized her voice was full of worry.
"What's wrong?" He asked quickly, pulling out his wand almost instinctively.
"It's Snape. I believe Hermione might do something to him 'cause she believes he's doing that." She explained as she pointed to Harry's broom.
"What do you want me to do?" He asked.
'Hmm, I thought I'd have to bribe him to help me, but maybe not.' She thought as she smiled at him.
"I need you to help me stop her. I know who really is doing it and it's wrong for her to blindly pursue the wrong person."
Draco looked at her in silent contemplation. "What's in it for me?" He asked.
She sighed. "I'll help you with your transfiguration homework for the next month," she said.
"No, not good enough. How about you sing in front of the entire school the last day before school ends?" He was trying to see if she'd agree to it.
He already knew she loved singing and didn't mind being watched. She sang at the pond almost daily and was caught by several teachers and students.
"Deal." She smiled nervously but was excited by the idea.
"So where's Hermione?" he asked bitterly.
"Last I checked she was still in the Gryffindor area, but she's a quick thinker so we need to find Snape."
"No, we only need to follow her and find out her plans, to stop her." He said, silently scouring the Gryffindor area.
"I can't believe she's finally wrong about something." Draco chuckled more to himself than anything else.
"So who is it actually?" He asked.
"Professor Quirrell."
"Really? What's he got to do with Potter?" Draco asked.
Jade shrugged. "I dunno, but I saw the murderous look in his eyes as he looked at Potter."
As they finally found Hermione they had to run after her, as she bolted towards the Slytherin area and through another entry that neither of them knew about. They had a hard time catching up to her, as they tried to dodge people who'd gotten in their way. When they finally caught up to her, she already had her wand drawn and pointed at Snape's cape under the benches he'd been sitting on.
"Granger, don't do it!" Hissed Draco as he almost ran into another Slytherin.
"Why the hell should I?" She hissed. "He's trying to hurt Harry."
"No. He's not." Said Jade more calmly than expected.
"What? But I saw him he-"
"You only saw him, you never thought to look at anyone around him." Jade hissed.
"Then who-"
"Professor Quirrell," Draco interrupted her.
~Tiny time skip~
Draco had returned to his spot in the stands sitting next to Crabbe and Goyle. Jade waved at them as she walked past Hermione and returned to the Gryffindor stands.
"So why did Draco-"
"He came to help when I asked him to." Jade interrupted not really wanting to hear the question.
"Yeah, but why? He hates me, Harry, and Ron." Hermione asked.
"He doesn't hate you. He hates Harry and Ron and you're in the crossfire since you're always with them." Jade lied and frowned when she realized she didn't know why.
"As for the reason, I guess you'll have to figure it out at the end of the year." She smirked as they found Ron and Hagrid.
They both suddenly looked at Harry, who could move properly and remove his hands from his broom.
'Oh, crap I forgot about that...' Jade thought bitterly to herself.
'I wonder who removed the sticking charm?' She whispered quietly to herself luckily for her everyone around her wasn't paying her any mind.
She quickly glanced around, her eyes darting here and there, trying to find the person responsible. But she couldn't spot anyone out of the ordinary. With a heavy sigh, she let it go and enjoyed the rest of the day.
"Neville, you can look!" Jade said gently to Neville, who had been sobbing in Hagrid's jacket for the past five minutes.
Harry was speeding towards the ground when the crowd saw him clap his hand to his mouth as though he was about to vomit. He hit the pitch on all fours, coughed, and something gold fell into his hand.
"I've got the Snitch!" he shouted, waving it above his head, and the game ended in complete confusion.
"He didn't catch it, he nearly swallowed it," Flint yelled twenty minutes later, but it made no difference.
Harry hadn't broken any rules and Lee Jordan was ecstatic about the result. Gryffindor won by one hundred and seventy points to sixty. The Gryffindor team cheered and congratulated Harry. Professor McGonagall gave him a rare smile as she shook his hand. The crowd applauded as they marched back to the castle victorious. However, Jade wondered how it didn't break the rules to catch it that way. It was gross and Jade nearly lost her last meal as it came out of him. Harry caught the snitch unorthodoxly, but no one cared. He had won the game and that was all that mattered to everyone. It was a momentous day for Gryffindor and they celebrated accordingly. Before Jade left to return to the Slytherin stands, she told Hermione to stay quiet about Quirrell. Cause unless Hermione could personally prove it wasn't Snape, they wouldn't believe a word of what she said, that is to say, at least Ron wouldn't.
Hermione knew Ron wouldn't believe what she said, and she had no way to prove it. She reluctantly agreed to stay quiet and watched sadly as Jade walked away.
~Time skip~
Christmas is coming. One morning in mid-December, Hogwarts woke up covered in snow. The lake froze solid and the Weasley twins were punished for making several snowballs to follow Quirrell around, bouncing off his turban. Jade snickered as she watched from her seat. Hagrid was seen walking around the grounds with a grin on his face, taking in the wintery beauty. He was heard humming Christmas carols and even singing a few lines to himself. Everyone in the castle was in good spirits, looking forward to the holidays. The few owls that managed to battle their way through the stormy sky to deliver letters had to be nursed back to health by Hagrid before they could fly off again. No one could wait for the holidays to start. Soon enough, the castle was filled with decorations, music, and laughter. Everyone was in high spirits, eager to celebrate the holidays with their families.
The holidays were sure to be magical. Possibly besides for Jade, who seemed to get more and more gloomy as the holidays crept closer and closer. Despite most of her classes going well, the most difficult class she had right now was Professor Snape's, since it was in the dungeon and the room could not be heated by a fireplace. Her breath rose in a mist and she kept as close as she could to her warm cauldron as she could.
"I do feel so sorry," said Draco Malfoy, one Potions class to Harry, however, he hadn't meant for Jade to hear the next part. "for all those people who have to stay at Hogwarts for Christmas because they're not wanted at home." He looked over at Harry as he spoke it.
Crabbe and Goyle chuckled, then looked over at Jade who had tears in her eyes. Draco's face softened, and he quickly attempted to apologize.
"Jade I-"
She smacked him across his left cheek."I don't want to hear it, Draco. Honestly, you know about my parents and what I've been trying to deal with since I got here... I just... I can't right now."
She ran out of the class not caring if she failed the class or got points taken from her house cup. Draco was left standing there in shock, feeling the pain from the slap. He watched her run away. He felt guilty and helpless. He wanted to apologize, to tell her he understood, but he knew it was too late. Harry, who measured out the powdered spine of a lionfish, ignored them but smirked when Jade smacked one of them. After that class, Draco wandered off to look for her. When he found her, he was surprised to not hear her sing a song reflecting her horrible feelings.
"Jade." He said to get her to look up from her knees that she'd been crying into.
"Look I'm sorry, I only meant for Potter to hear it." He thought that was a good enough reason.
Jade laughed bitterly.
"You think that's a good enough reason? I'm surprised he didn't hit you for it... his life is a lot more miserable than mine, but unlike him, I'm not willing to sit around and let someone hurt me. I don't care if it was intentional or not Draco." She said almost telling him about Potters' home life with his aunt and uncle but remembered Hermione telling her not to inform anyone about it a while ago.
She then walked away from him, allowing him to think alone. Professor McGonagall had come round the week before, making a list of students who would stay for the holidays, and Harry signed up at once. He'd told Jade, Ron, and Hermione it was because he didn't want to return to his abusive aunt and uncle. They would gift his cousin with expensive gifts and give him nothing more than a meal or two maybe. Jade had thought about staying as well but decided she really needed to talk to the Greens and see where she stands with them. Not caring whether it's painful or not. Ron and his brothers were also staying because Mr. and Mrs. Weasley were traveling to Romania to visit their eldest son Charlie. As she left the dungeon and walked to the Great Hall, she saw Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick decorating Christmas trees.
"Ah, Hagrid, the last tree, put it in the far corner, would you?" asked one of the professors.
The hall looked spectacular. Holly and mistletoe hung around the walls and twelve towering Christmas trees stood around the room. Some sparkled with tiny icicles, some glittered with hundreds of candles. The last tree was the biggest of them all, with a shining star on top. The professors admired it and nodded in approval. They stepped back to admire their work.
"How many days have ya got left until yer holidays?" Hagrid asked.
"Just one," said Hermione, unaware of Jade's sorrowful look as she joined them.
"And that reminds me... Harry, Ron, we've got half an hour before lunch, we should be in the library." Jade looked at them curiously but didn't follow them.
"Oh yeah, you're right," replied Ron, tearing his eyes away from Professor Flitwick.
As he looked at Jade, he noticed the look in her eyes but didn't say anything.
"The library?" said Hagrid, who followed them out of the hall.
Jade couldn't hear their conversation so she decided to sit at the currently empty Slytherin table with a sigh. After about ten minutes, Snape walked up and sat next to her.
"What's bothering you?" He asks with a blank look on his face.
"Nothing." She lies not wanting to say anything.
He let it slide for now as he really just wanted to tell her what he had found out about her blood.
"Would you want to hear what I was doing with your blood?" He asked knowing if she was like Bellatrix or Tom she'd take the bait no matter how she was feeling.
She nodded eagerly, eager to know what he'd done with her blood. He smiled and began to explain, pleased that he'd been able to take her curiosity and use it to his advantage.
"I'm sure you realize, no one has ever been put in Slytherin as a Muggle-born, correct?" Again she just nodded. "Well, I tested your blood to find out your blood status..."
This piqued Jade's curiosity as she sat upright and looked at him. Snape could tell she was trying to look bored but failed and smirked. This was the reaction he expected.
"Would you like to know the answer?" Thinking about how to get another sample of her blood to determine if she really was Bella's daughter.
She nodded again.
"Ah-ah I need to hear it." He said just teasing her to see if she'd smile.
She smiled and nodded again. "Yes," she said laughing slightly in amusement. "I would like to know the answer."
"You. Are. Not. Muggle-born." He said with a pause between each word for dramatic effect. "You are also not half-blood... So what do you think you are?" He asked.
This caused her to frown at the thought. "If I'm not muggle-born or half-blood... then that leaves me as a muggle... or... no, no there's no way... I'm a pure-blood?" She asked thinking aloud.
He nodded slowly, confirming her suspicions. She couldn't believe it. She had spent so long believing she was a muggle-born, only to discover she had been a pure-blood all along. Snape nodded.
"But I was adopted by muggles... Daphne had told me when I first arrived, 'no pure-blood would give away their children, let alone to muggles'"
Snape let the information sink in, and the evidence of who her birth parents were built up more and more. However, he didn't like false hope or giving away the wrong information, so he simply nodded.
"That just means you were not given to them... but the real question you should be asking at this point is who took you from your magical parents?" He said before leaving her to think about what he'd said.
She thought about it for a few moments, before shaking her head to clear her thoughts. She had no idea who had taken her from her parents. She felt a wave of sadness wash over her as she realized she may never know the answer.
~With Harry and his friends~
Harry, Hermione, and Ron had been in the library for fifteen minutes when they were caught in the restricted section and got kicked out. The next day as the students who weren't staying left, they spotted Jade Green. She left with the same look of sadness they'd seen on her face when she slapped Malfoy. Harry chuckled as he remembered the look on the Slytherin boy's face.
"Wonder why she looks so sad?" said Harry and Ron at the same time.
Hermione shrugged. "You will keep looking while I'm away, won't you?" asked Hermione. "And send me an owl if you find anything." She hugged them before leaving school.
