Chapter 8
Nyota's first day as Spock's fiancé was uneventful. Sarek was pleasant enough. Perhaps he was too attentive for Nyota. She had heard guards discussing the things that Vulcans did to the females who caught the attention of Vulcans. For two centuries V'Tosh had captured thousands of women in Europe and North America. Then they moved to Asia and South America. Sudoc had somehow developed a liking for African women. He was quickly decimating the economies of African nations, along with the families that lived there. Men on Earth now outnumbered women two to one. Most human women were off the planet or dead.
Nyota counted herself lucky to be in the household of the planetary governor, but she also realized that if anything happened to Spock, she would be quite vulnerable, and there was nothing Kamu could do to protect her.
The Uhura family had lived under the radar during the Vulkan occupation. Their home had been in the family for centuries, and her mother's relatives developed agricultural practices that enabled the family to produce cash crops and food for subsistence. There was no reason for Alhamasi to take such a risk for such a paltry amount of money. Now, Nyota's sister Makena was vulnerable because Nyota had been kidnapped.
"Nyota," Spock said softly. "Are you awake?"
Nyota pulled the covers up around her chin. Yes, you may enter," she replied.
Spock strode across the room quickly.
"That was an inappropriate response." Spock admonished her.
"You say, yes Osu, or yes, my lord to any male Vulcan who addresses you," Spock said.
"Yes, my lord," Nyota said. She sighed heavily.
"When we are bonded, you may call me Adun," Spock said.
Nyota hung her head. Tears began to fall.
"Nyota, I will do my best to protect you, but you must comply for the sake of Kamu and your family," Spock said.
He sat down on the bed and placed his hand on her chin.
"You are so lovely. "I don't want any harm to come to you." Spock leaned forward and kissed her cheek.
"Sa-fu," Sarek said as he barged into the room. He grinned when he saw Spock touching his fiancé. Spock pulled back and stood up.
"Yes, Sa'mehk," Spock said. He was walking on eggshells, but he promised Kamu to keep Nyota safe.
"You don't have to be embarrassed. You are a high clan V'Tosh. It is your duty to produce an heir as soon as possible." Sarek said.
It was the bargain Spock had made to secure Nyota's safety. He was duty-bound to comply.
"I was instructing my fiancé on the appropriate communication protocol among V'Tosh," Spock said.
"That is wise," Sarek said. "There are cloaks in the wardrobe if you decide to venture out."
Spock looked at Nyota. He had not explained the clothing requirements.
"I had hoped to dine with you and your fiancé, but there is much to be learned. Take all the time you need. I will provide you with guards if you leave the embassy." Sarek said.
Spock sat down on the bed and took Nyota's hand in his. She forced a smile.
"She is delightful. I envy you, sa-fu." Sarek said.
'Children?" Nyota said.
"It is the only thing that he and my grandfather desire. Our clan is small. My brother has produced two heirs. I am required to do the same." Spock said.
He stood up and held out his hand. She took it, and he led her to a private elevator. They descended into a cavern beneath the embassy. Spock led Nyota around, explaining the purpose of the cavern. He held nothing back. Nyota needed to know what had happened to his mother and countless other human females and some males who had the unfortunate misfortune of catching the eye of a V'Tosh who preferred male concubines. By the time they returned to her quarters, Nyota was shell-shocked.
"Tomorrow, we will see a physician. Then I must stop by the campus to retrieve student padds." Spock said.
"Campus?" Nyota shook her head.
"I am a professor at Starfleet Academy. I have a home near the campus. Once we are bonded, I will ask to return to my home." Spock said.
"Do you think I can return to school?" Nyota asked timidly.
"We must do our best to secure the approval of my father. Once he is satisfied, I will ask. There is no reason why we cannot use a nanny to help with the children." Spock said.
"Yes, Osu," Nyota replied. She desperately wanted to go to graduate school. Starfleet was far superior to the private college in Kenya. She knew that money would be no issue this time.
"You need your rest," Spock said. He stood to go.
"Would you stay with me?" Nyota asked.
"No, come," Spock held out his hand.
He led Nyota into a room that was even more magnificent than hers.
She sighed. Spock led her to the bathroom.
"Please bathe. I will return with a sleeping gown." He said.
Nyota bowed her head. She was shocked at how quickly she was adjusting to her new life. However, Spock was part human. She hoped that his humanity would be reflected in his treatment of her. Nyota quickly showered and wrapped herself in a towel. A servant entered and helped her into a gown. Then she led Nyota to the sleeping chamber.
Spock lay on the bed in a sarong. Nyota marveled at his muscles.
"You are welcome to be with me anytime," he said.
In many ways, there were both trapped. Spock had pleaded with Sarek to save her life. He hoped it would be worth it.
