Kelly waited until Gabby was done heaving and had some water before he spoke. "You're pregnant." It was a statement, not a question.
Gabby nodded, sitting back against the wall across from him. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes for a moment, fighting back another wave of nausea. Once it passed, she opened her eyes and looked at him. "Yes," she replied.
Kelly nodded slowly. "And I'm guessing, since you're here in Chicago and were waiting outside my apartment, that the baby is mine?" he asked, his voice and face giving no sign of what he was feeling.
"Yes," Gabby replied meekly. "I'm sorry, Kelly. This isn't how I planned to tell you. I didn't mean for you to find out like this-" she started to explain, but Kelly cut her off, quickly getting up and kneeling next to her.
"Gabby," he said softly. "We're having a baby?" he asked, letting a hint of excitement slip into his voice while trying to ensure he didn't betray any of the panic he was feeling in addition to the excitement. While the news was still sinking in, he was both excited and terrified at the prospect of being a father.
Gabby bit her lip and nodded, searching his face to see if the excitement she'd thought she'd heard in his voice was real. She'd been unsure of how he'd react to the news of being a father, and it was made even more complicated by the fact that she wasn't sure if Matt had told him about the aneurysm and the risk that pregnancy carried for her. "But Kelly…there's something else I have to tell you."
It hit Kelly then, and he was fairly certain what Gabby was about to tell him next. The aneurysm. He'd forgotten about it until now. Casey had told him about it when Kelly was having doubts about his and Stella's relationship and had asked Casey why he and Gabby had gotten divorced. "I know about the aneurysm," he told her gently. "Casey told me."
Gabby's shoulders sagged with relief, knowing she wouldn't need to explain everything to him. But she still wasn't sure exactly how much he knew. "What exactly did he tell you?" she asked.
Kelly sat down next to her and tugged her against him, wrapping his arm around her. She laid her head on his shoulder as he replied. "He told me that the aneurysm makes pregnancy dangerous for you; that there's a chance having a baby could cause it to burst, which would put both you and the baby at risk," he told her. "He said that was one of the reasons you two got divorced; you wanted to have a baby, despite the risk, and he wasn't willing to take that chance."
It hit Kelly then. It was no wonder Gabby had looked so tired and worried. Not only did she have to worry about how he'd react, but she also had the additional concern about the risk that this pregnancy carried for her.
"Kelly, I want this baby," she whispered, "but I'm scared. My doctor in Puerto Rico…he felt I needed to see a high risk OB here in the states, both because of the better care I can get here and because if…if it ends up being too dangerous to continue with the pregnancy, it would be easier to…" her voice trailed off, not wanting to say the words out loud.
She didn't have to finish the sentence for Kelly to know exactly what she was going to say. It would be easier for her to get an abortion. "How long have you known? And when is your appointment?" he asked. "I'm assuming it's here in Chicago?"
Gabby nodded. "Yes, the doctor is here in Chicago. I figured it would be easier that way, being in a familiar place. And in case you wanted to-"
Kelly cut her off. "Gabby, I'm going to be there with you every step of the way. I promise."
Gabby looked up at him, her relief evident in her eyes. "Really?" she asked.
Kelly nodded. "Yes. I'm the one who got your pregnant; I'm not going to make you go through this yourself. No matter what happens, I'm going to be there with you, and I'll support you in whatever you decide."
"Thank you," Gabby whispered, her eyes filling with tears. She'd been afraid of how Kelly would respond. While she had no doubt that he'd be thrilled about being a father, given how he'd reacted when Renee had lied to him and told her she was pregnant with his baby, she'd been afraid that he'd respond in the same way that Matt would have responded: by telling her to terminate the pregnant. Knowing that she had his full support, no matter what, was a huge relief.
Kelly kissed the top of her head. "Of course," he replied simply. "How's the nausea? Do you think you'd be okay with continuing this conversation on the couch rather than staying on the bathroom floor? I mean, I know the bathroom is great, but the couch is better," he teased gently.
Gabby laughed softly. "I can't promise I won't need to make another mad dash here in the middle of our conversation, but yes. Someplace more comfortable sounds amazing."
Kelly stood up and then turned and offered her his hand, helping her to her feet. He frowned at how light she was. "Has the morning sickness been pretty bad?" he asked, his brow furrowed with concern.
Gabby laughed wryly. "Whoever called it morning sickness needs shot. It's more like all day sickness. I've barely been able to keep anything down the past few weeks. The doctor prescribed me some anti-nausea medicine, and it helps some, but" she motioned behind them to the bathroom as they walked down the hall, "not enough, as you can tell."
Kelly made a mental note to ask the OB about that at her appointment. Which reminded him, she never had answered his question about when it was. "So, when is your appointment?"
"Wednesday," she replied hesitantly. Today was Monday, and the fact that he'd been on shift yesterday meant that he'd be on shift again on Wednesday. She didn't like the thought of going without him, but she'd also known that would be a possibility given how quickly everything had happened.
Kelly nodded. "I'll call Boden later and let him know that I'll be taking Wednesday off," he replied.
"Kelly," Gabby protested, "you don't have to do that. I know it's short notice."
Kelly shook his head. "Yes, I do. I told you, I'm going to be there for you every step of the way. I'm not going to make you go to that first appointment by yourself, Gabby." He went to the kitchen, refilling Gabby's glass of water and grabbing some crackers he happened to have on hand. He went to grab himself a beer, then thought better of it and got himself a glass of water, as well.
When he got back to the living room, he handed Gabby the water and crackers before taking a seat on the couch beside her. He glanced over at her sheepishly. "I wasn't sure if crackers would help or not, but I figured you needed to eat something."
Gabby smiled softly at him. She'd wasn't used to this side of Kelly. She'd known he had a soft side to him, of course. She'd seen it before, especially on calls involving kids, but it had never been directed towards her. "Thanks. Crackers are pretty much all I've been eating lately. They're the only thing that stand a chance of staying down."
"How long have you known? About the baby, that is," Kelly clarified.
"About a week," Gabby informed him. "I started throwing up almost three weeks ago, but just shrugged it off to food poisoning or a virus. Antonio finally insisted that I see a doctor, so I went last Wednesday." She glanced over at him, a worried expression on her face. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you right away. I should have called…I just wasn't sure…I didn't know if it'd be better to tell you over the phone or in person. So I got an appointment with an OB and then got the first flight I could. I got in yesterday afternoon, but you were obviously on shift when I stopped by. I figured telling you at the firehouse wasn't exactly the best idea," she laughed hesitantly.
"Hey, look at me," Kelly instructed her softly. He waited for her to do so before continuing, "You have nothing to apologize for, Gabby. You did the right thing. I'm glad you told me in person rather than calling." He paused for a moment, thinking. "Where are you staying? Are you renting an apartment somewhere?"
Gabby shook her head. "Since I don't know how long I'll be here, I just got a hotel for now," she replied. "I figured, depending on how the appointment goes, I can start looking for a place in a few days."
Kelly was already shaking his head before she was even finished talking. "No; you can stay here with me. I'm not letting you stay in a hotel, and there's no need for you to worry about look for an apartment. I have an extra room; you can stay here as long as you need. As long as you're okay with that, of course," he rushed to add, not wanting her to feel pressured into staying with him if that's not what she wanted.
"Are you sure?" Gabby asked, biting her lip nervously. "I don't want to inconvenience you."
"I'm sure," Kelly assured her. "There's no sense on you spending money on a hotel or apartment when I have a perfectly good guest room here. Besides, it will be nice to have someone else around again."
Gabby was about to reply but instead made another dash for the bathroom. Kelly quickly grabbed her water and followed her, once again holding her hair back and rubbing her back in an attempt to soothe her as best he could.
"Why are you doing this, Kelly?" Gabby asked when the wave of nausea had finally passed, turning so she could face him. "All of this. Letting me stay with you, going to appointments with me, even," she gestured to their surroundings, "sitting here in the bathroom taking care of me while I puke my guts up. You don't have to do any of this, but you are."
Kelly leaned forwarded and rested a hand on her cheek, gently rubbing it with his thumb. "Because I want to be. This is my baby, too. I'm the one who got you pregnant because I was drunk and heartbroken. The least I can do is be there for you."
"Do you regret it?" Gabby asked quietly, avoiding his gaze.
Kelly laughed. "This seems very similar to the last conversation we had on a bathroom floor in front of a toilet." He grew serious and lifted Gabby's chin so he could look in her eyes. "No," he answered softly. "I don't regret it."
