Gabby groggily made her way out of the bedroom and into the living room. It had taken her a moment to remember where she was when she'd woken up, but the events of that morning had quickly come back to her. A glance at the clock had told her that she'd been asleep for nearly five hours, as it was now 3:30 in the afternoon.
Upon entering the living room, she smiled at the sight that greeted her. Kelly was asleep on the couch, still in the same clothes he'd been wearing that morning, one arm flung over his eyes and one leg hanging off the couch. It reminded her of all the times she'd found him asleep on the couch before when he'd been roommates with her and Casey and brought back a flood of memories.
Gabby gently lifted Kelly's leg up onto the couch and tugged at the blanket that was folded over the back of the couch, spreading it over him. He'd looked exhausted when he'd gotten home that morning, which meant it must have been a long shift the night before, so she didn't have the heart to wake him. Instead, she let him sleep and wandered into the kitchen to look at the food situation.
Just as she'd expected, Kelly didn't have much in his fridge or cupboards. While he was actually a decent cook, he'd never been good about keeping his place well stocked, opting for takeout instead. Although she wasn't eating much right now, she'd bug him about going grocery shopping to ensure he was at least eating.
Gabby glanced around the apartment, looking for her suitcase so that she could start unpacking, but didn't see it anywhere. She went back to the guest room to check there just in case she had overlooked it in her still half-asleep state, but it wasn't there, either. She was about to open the closet to check inside when a wave of nausea hit her and she dashed for the bathroom, barely making it in time. Well, there went all those crackers she'd managed to keep down earlier.
Kelly was by her side minutes later, once again pulling her hair out of her way and rubbing her back soothingly. "Is there anything I can do?" he asked, feeling helpless as she continued emptying the few contents of her stomach into the toilet.
"My suitcase…it has my medicine in it," Gabby rasped. "I couldn't find it." She felt bad about having woken him up with her puking but was also thankful that he was awake so she could take her medicine.
Kelly immediately mentally kicked himself for sticking her suitcase in his room without letting her know. His plan was to give her his room, since it has an attached bathroom, and move his own stuff to the guest room, but he hadn't had a chance to fill her in on that. He tossed Gabby's suitcase onto the bed and unzipped it. He noticed the toiletry bag laying on top of her clothes and grabbed it, quickly opening it up, relieved to see that his assumption that the medicine would be in there was correct. He hurried to the kitchen and got a glass of water before taking both the medicine and water back to Gabby.
"Thanks," Gabby murmured after she'd taken one of the pills. "Sorry I woke you up."
Kelly shook his head. "Don't apologize; I didn't mean to fall asleep, anyways."
Gabby smiled. "I could tell; you were hanging half off the couch," she teased him.
Kelly reached down and helped Gabby to her feet. "I put your suitcase in my room," he told her, choosing to ignore her comment. "I figured it would be better for you, since it has a bathroom attached. I'll move my stuff to the guest room tonight."
"Kelly," Gabby protested. "There's no need for that. I'm not taking your room. I'll be just fine with the guest room."
Kelly shook his head. "There's no sense in arguing; you're not going to change my mind," he informed her. "I also stopped at the store on my way home; I got some more crackers, as well as some bread and ginger ale."
"I hope you got some things for yourself, too," Gabby informed him. "Your fridge and cupboards are looking pretty bare."
Kelly looked slightly embarrassed. "I haven't been spending a lot of time home, lately. Most of the time I'm off shift, I'm at Molly's," he confessed.
Gabby wasn't surprised given the state he'd been in when they left New York. "Most?" she questioned.
"Okay, all," Kelly grudgingly admitted.
"Is Herrmann going to be concerned when you don't show tonight?" Gabby questioned, knowing the firefighter's tendency to worry.
Kelly shook his head. "I stopped by Boden's while I was out, too. Herrmann will get a hold of him first, and he'll tell Herrmann not to worry. I told him I needed to take the next couple of shifts off for personal reasons."
"Why the next couple?" Gabby questioned. "The appointment is on Wednesday; there's no need for you to take Saturday off, too."
"Because," Kelly replied, sitting down on the couch and tugging Gabby down beside him, "I wanted to. I figured we could use the time to discuss everything." He paused before adding, "Plus I'm worried about you. I didn't want to leave you alone that soon," he admitted.
"Kelly," Gabby protested. "There's nothing to worry about; I'm fine. It's just morning sickness. I'm pregnant, not sick."
Kelly shook his head. "Gabby, you've lost at least ten pounds since I saw you in New York. You can barely keep anything down. I'm not going to shift Saturday. That's final," he informed her, his tone making it clear there was no room for argument.
"I've only lost six pounds," Gabby muttered, making Kelly laugh.
He pulled her against him and wrapped his arm around her. "Still as stubborn as ever, I see," he teased.
"Kelly?" Gabby asked softly.
"Mhmm?" Kelly replied.
"I'm scared," Gabby admitted. "I really want this baby. Being a mother, it's something I've always wanted. I'm scared that the doctor is going to recommend…that she'll say it isn't safe for me to continue with the pregnancy. But I'm also scared of what might happen if I do continue with it."
"I know," Kelly replied. "I'm scared, too. I want this baby, but I don't want anything to happen to you, either."
"What if…what if the doctor tells me it's not safe? What if she says I should have an abortion?" Gabby asked, forcing herself to say it.
"I can't tell you what to do, Gabby," Kelly replied, running his hand up and down her arm and squeezing it gently. "The decision is ultimately up to you. Whatever you decide, I'll support you one hundred percent."
Gabby looked up at him. From the expression on his face, she could tell that he meant every word he said. "Thank you, Kelly."
"For what?" he asked.
"For being here for me. For supporting me in whatever decision I make. For," she motioned around at the apartment, "letting me move in with you. You came home to me on your doorstep this morning, and ever since you've been taking care of me. You never once hesitated, even once I told you I was pregnant," she explained.
Kelly looked down at her, surprised. "Of course," he replied. "I told you, Gabby. I'm going to be here for you, no matter what. I'm not going to let you go through this alone."
Gabby nestled into his side and rested her head on his chest. "I was scared to tell you. I know this isn't what either of us had planned on when we slept together. I should have been more careful."
"We both should have. But it doesn't matter now. All that matters is that it did happen, and what we're going to do now that it did," Kelly replied. He paused for a moment, then added, "I do have a confession to make, though."
"Hmm?" Gabby murmured sleepily against his chest, making Kelly smile.
"Boden knows about you and the baby," Kelly informed her, quickly adding, "I didn't tell him it was you; he figured that out on his own. And he promised he wouldn't tell anyone."
Gabby sighed. "We'll have to tell everyone eventually if we go through with this pregnancy. I'm glad Boden knows first," she replied.
Minutes later Kelly felt Gabby breathing deeply, fast asleep. He smiled, tugging the blanket over to him that Gabby had used to cover him earlier, and spreading it across both of them, shifting himself so they were both laying down, Gabby still nestled against his chest. Before long, he had drifted off to sleep himself.
