A/N: This is a bit of a shorter chapter, but it does include a brief Gabby/Matt interaction! And don't worry, more people will find out about the baby soon.

Kelly had only been back to his quarters for a few minutes after seeing Gabby off when he heard a knock on the door. He looked up, expecting to see one of the squad guys standing there, and was surprised to see Brett instead.

Kelly and Brett had grown to be friends after Casey and Stella left due to their mutual sadness over missing their partners. Ever since Kelly had returned from New York, though, Kelly had distanced himself from the blonde paramedic. He had been shocked and disappointed to find out that Brett hadn't told Gabby about her relationship with Casey considering how close the two of them used to be.

"Hey, Severide. Do you have a minute?" Brett asked.

"Sure," Kelly replied, turning around in his chair and motioning for her to come in. "What's up?"

Brett stepped into Kelly's quarters and leaned back against the foot of Kelly's bed, facing him. "I saw you talking to Gabby outside, and I was just wondering if she'd said anything to you."

"Said anything about what?" Kelly questioned, unsure of what exactly the paramedic was getting out. Brett had a worried expression on her face, but Kelly wasn't sure if that stemmed from the possibility of her and Casey's relationship being revealed to her former best friend, or if it was something else.

"About why she's in town. Why she came back now," Brett explained.

Kelly laughed mirthlessly. "If you're worried that she came back for Casey, don't be. She's not here for him."

Brett looked shocked and then chagrined. "No, I, uh, no, that's not what I meant," she rushed to explain. "It's just…she looked really pale. And she's lost a lot of weight. She just…" Brett paused for a moment, trying to gather her thoughts. "I'm worried about her, Kelly. She didn't look good; she looks like she's sick. I was just wondering if she'd said anything to you about that. I just…I want to make sure she's okay."

Kelly was surprised at the blonde's response. While he had expected at least someone to question Gabby's health, he hadn't expected it to be Brett. She had seemed to be the least interested in the fact that Gabby had returned, hanging back and not saying anything at all to her former partner. Kelly had wondered if she would have even been out there had it not been for the grilling she'd get from her shiftmates afterwards. No, his money had been on Herrmann being the one to voice his concern about Gabby's appearance.

He thought for a moment, trying to figure out what to tell her. "She came back from Puerto Rico for health reasons," he began finally, "but it's not serious." Well, that wasn't exactly the whole truth, but it was mostly true. She had come back for health issues surrounding her pregnancy, and it wasn't serious right now, at least. "She's getting treatment, but she'll be okay."

Kelly's words did nothing to assuage the younger woman's concern; in fact, she seemed to look more worried now than she did before.

"What do you mean by it's not serious? What's wrong with her?" Brett questioned worriedly.

"That's not really any of your business, Brett," Kelly replied, his voice sharper than he'd attended. The next part slipped out before he had a chance to stop it. "I'm not really sure why you care anyways; you couldn't even be bothered to let the woman who was your partner and, at one point, your best friend, know that you were dating her ex-husband. She had to find out by accident when I told her about Casey moving to Oregon and how you were considering moving out there."

Brett's eyes dropped to the floor. At least she had the decency to look ashamed. "You're right, Kelly. I'm sorry. I have no right to know anything about her life." She stood up and started for the door but turned back to him. "I know I should have told her," she said softly, "but I was scared; I didn't know how. But I know that Casey and I were wrong for not telling her. Will you tell her I'm sorry?" She slipped out of Kelly's quarters before Kelly had a chance to reply.

"Hello?" Gabby answered her phone when a number she didn't recognize flash across the screen.

"Uh, hey, Gabby; it's Matt," came the voice from the other end of the phone.

Gabby almost dropped her phone in shock. She hadn't heard from Matt since he'd slipped out of her room while she was still sleeping during her last visit to Chicago. "Matt? Is something wrong?"

"No, nothing's wrong. I just…Brett said you showed up at the firehouse today." Gabby heard him pause, clearing his throat before continuing, "I- uh, I-, she said you were going to be in Chicago for a while."

"Yeah, I have some things I needed to take care of here," Gabby replied, still confused as to why he'd called.

"Look, Gabby. I'm sorry. I know I should have told you about me and Brett; I was wrong not to. You should have found out from one of us, not from Severide."

Now Gabby was even more confused. How did he know that Kelly was the one to tell her? And why was he calling to apologize now?

"Why didn't you?" Gabby asked, trying to keep any hint of accusation out of her voice. "Matt-, you had my number. All you had to do was pick up the phone and call. Is it because of what happened the last time I was in Chicago? Is that why you left the way you did?"

"I-, uh, I-, well, yeah, I guess. I was scared. Brett and I, we weren't together then, but we definitely both had feelings for each other. But then you were back, and you invited me to the fundraiser, and things felt so normal again. I thought-, for a moment, I thought things could go back to the way they had been. But then I thought about Brett, and I just, I couldn't do it. I'm sorry, Gabby.

"You and I, the way we ended, it was hard. And Brett was hurting, too. You were her best friend and you just left. So we talked a lot. At first it was mainly about you, but then we started getting to know each other better and talking about other things. Then one day, shortly after the fundraiser, Ambo was in an accident and all I could think about was Brett and making sure she was okay. I don't really even know when it happened; one day we were friends and then the next it was something more."

"You could have told me," Gabby replied softly. "I would have understood, Matt. I didn't expect you to stay single forever. It's just, Brett. She was my best friend. It would have taken some time, but I would have been okay with it. I am okay with it," she hurried to add. "I just wish it had been one of you to tell me rather than Kelly.

"I know, Gabby, and I'm sorry. We both regret it, believe me."

Gabby did. She knew that neither Casey nor Brett would ever intentionally hurt her. "Thanks, Matt." She paused for a moment and then added, "It was weird today, being at 51 and you not being there."

"It's weird not being there. But Ben and Griffin needed me, and I couldn't just leave them alone. I had to help them. And the best way for me to do that right now is to be here in Oregon. Maybe in a year or two I'll be able to move back to Chicago with them, but right now Portland is the best place for them."

"Tell them I said hi?" Gabby asked. She'd enjoyed helping Matt with the Darden boys years ago while Heather was in prison and had grown fond of them. She'd often wondered over the years how they were doing. She was glad that Matt was with them again.

She and Matt talked for a few minutes longer before hanging up. Once they did, she sat on the couch for a while, thinking about everything. She wasn't sure what prompted Matt to call her, but she had a sneaking suspicion that Kelly had something to do with it.

Kelly jumped as his phone vibrated on his desk, drawing his attention away from the report he'd been working on.

I just got a phone call from Matt.

Kelly wasn't completely surprised. Given the way Brett had reacted to their talk earlier, he'd assumed that the paramedic would call Matt and fill him in on everything. He was surprised that Matt had called Gabby so quickly, though. He quickly typed out his response: Oh yeah? How'd that go? You okay?

It was…good? He apologized for not telling me about him and Brett. It was weird talking to him again, but it was good. It…it gave me the closure I didn't know I needed.

Good, I'm glad, Kelly replied. I'm only a phone call away if you need to talk.

I'm actually going to try to get some sleep. It's been a long day. Stay safe, okay?
