A/N: This is a short chapter, but I made up for it by throwing in a healthy amount of Kelly and Gabby fluff.
Kelly had only been home for a few days when he was woken up in the middle of the night by screaming coming from Gabby's room. "No! No! Help!" He threw the covers back and jumped out of bed, instantly regretting it when the pain reminded him of his injuries. He ran to Gabby's room, throwing open the door, afraid of what he might see, terrified that something was wrong with Gabby or the baby. His heart slowed a little when he saw that Gabby was still in bed asleep. She was obviously dreaming.
"Shay! No! Someone help! Kelly!" Gabby screamed again.
Kelly knelt next to the bed and gently shook Gabby. "Gabby," he called softly. "It's ok; it's just a dream."
Gabby opened her eyes slowly, as though she was afraid of what she'd see when she did so. "Kelly?" she whimpered.
Kelly reached out and brushed her hair from her face. "Shhh, it's okay. You were having a bad dream."
"I'm sorry I woke you up," Gabby apologized softly, looking away from Kelly in hopes that he wouldn't see the tears that were filling her eyes.
Kelly stood up and sat next to her on the edge of the bed. "Do you want to talk about it?" he asked gently.
Gabby shook her head, still refusing to look at him.
"You were yelling Shay's name," Kelly said gently. "Was it about Shay?"
Gabby nodded. "It was happening all over again," she told him. "The building exploded, and Shay…" She paused before continuing. "But this time you didn't come," she whispered. "You weren't there. I kept calling for you, but you didn't answer. It seemed so real."
Kelly knew exactly where this was coming from. He cursed himself for not realizing it earlier. Gabby was scared. The incident at the movie theater had terrified her, and now she was having nightmares.
"Hey, look at me," Kelly told her. He waited for her to do so before continuing. "I'm not going anywhere, okay? I'm here, and I'm okay. It was a dream." He placed his hand on her cheek, wiping away the tears that had fallen. "I'll always be here, Gabby, no matter what. I promise."
"Will you stay with me tonight?" Gabby asked hesitantly. "Please?"
Kelly nodded, and Gabby scooted over so that he could lay down next to her. "She would have been happy for us, you know? Shay would have been so excited." Kelly chuckled, "She probably would have demanded naming rights for the baby."
"She would have been furious with us at first, but then she would have been unbearable," Gabby agreed.
The two continued talking about Shay and their memories of her until they drifted off to sleep.
When Kelly woke up the next morning, he found that, at some point in the night, Gabby's head had ended up on his chest and his arm had ended up around her. He could tell by her breathing that she was still asleep, and he contemplated whether or not to move before she woke up. He decided against it, wrapping his arm tighter around her instead.
So much had changed since they'd first slept together just over five months ago. That first night, when Kelly was drowning his sorrows in alcohol, he couldn't imagine ever wanting to be with someone else in any way other than a casual fling or a one night stand. At some point since Gabby's arrival two months ago, all of that had changed.
He hadn't realized it until he'd almost died, but somewhere along the line he'd begun to think of Gabby as more than just the mother of his child and his friend; she was so much more than that, and he couldn't imagine her not being in his life. He tried to fight it, afraid of being hurt again, afraid that Gabby wouldn't feel the same way, or worse, that she would think he only cared about her because of the baby. But he couldn't.
He'd tried flirting with random women that he rescued and with the nurses in the hospital, but his heart wasn't in it. He wasn't that man anymore; for better or for worse, his time with Stella had changed him. He ended up just feeling guilty afterwards, as though he were cheating on Gabby, even though he knew that wasn't the case; they'd both agreed that they were just friends.
Gabby stirred then, shifting in her sleep. He waited, holding his breath to see if she'd wake up, but she didn't. She simply moved closer, her growing stomach pressing against his side, which, unfortunately for him, was the side his injured ribs were on. He clenched his teeth and tried to move over a bit to get some relief. That only worked for a minute before Gabby moved over as well.
He wasn't able to stop the hiss of pain that escaped through his clenched teeth, waking Gabby up.
"Kelly? What's wrong?" she asked worriedly.
"My ribs," gritted out Kelly through his clenched teeth.
Gabby quickly realized what the problem was and scooted over. "Sorry," she mumbled, embarrassed. "I must have moved in my sleep."
"You were obviously sleeping good," Kelly teased. "I'm just glad I didn't wake up to drool on my chest.
Gabby blushed. "I don't drool in my sleep," she insisted.
"No, you don't," Kelly agreed. "Thankfully for me." He reached out a hand to stroke her cheek. "You actually look beautiful when you sleep," he murmured.
Gabby's face flushed some more. "You really shouldn't watch people sleep," she scolded. "It's creepy."
Kelly shrugged. "You're the one that keeps falling asleep on me."
Gabby laughed. "I'm pregnant; I have an excuse," she replied, pushing the covers back and getting out of bed. "Now excuse me; your child is pressing on my bladder, and I need to pee."
Kelly watched as she walked to the bathroom wearing only one of his shirts and her underwear. She'd taken to wearing his shirts to sleep in, insisting it made more sense than buying new pajamas, and he hadn't argued because he liked seeing her in them.
Kelly Severide, what the hell did you get yourself into? he thought to himself while Gabby was in the bathroom. Since their conversation a few weeks ago, there hadn't been any more talk about what was going on between them despite them. But Kelly knew they were due for another one. Gabby deserved to know how he felt about her.
