A/N: Sorry it's been so long since I've updated! Life has been crazy and I haven't had a chance to update any of my stories until now. This chapter brings some Dawseride drama; after all, real life relationships aren't all sunshine and roses, so why shouldn't fictional relationships have some bumps in the road?

"We just administered the medicine to reverse Gabby's sedation. She should be waking up soon," Dr. Strand told Kelly and Antonio four hours after they'd initially reduced the settings on Gabby's ventilator.

Kelly sat on the edge of his chair, still holding Gabby's hand, and reached up and stroked her cheek with his other hand. "Come on, honey. It's time to wake up now, Gabby."

Antonio watched as Kelly interacted with his sister. There was no doubt in his mind that this man was completely and totally in love with her. He'd barely left her side since Antonio had been there, and from what he'd been told by Brett, it had been the same way before he'd arrived. Gabby had never come right out and told him how she felt about Kelly, that wasn't how she was, but he'd been able to tell from their conversations that she had feelings for him.

Up until now, that had made him nervous. He knew Kelly's reputation, and he didn't want to see his sister get hurt. But seeing Kelly's devotion to Gabby, even now that there was no longer a baby to tie him to her, left no doubt in his mind that he had nothing to worry about.

Gabby's eyelids fluttered briefly and both men stood up, leaning over her bed. Antonio forced himself to take a step back. As much as he loved his sister and had been worried about her, Kelly's should be the first face she saw, not his. He held his breath as her eyelids fluttered again, this time staying open for a few minutes before shutting again.

"Come on, pretty Gabby. Open those eyes for me, please," Kelly instructed her softly. This time when Gabby's eyes opened, they stayed open. "Gabby?" he called softly, and Gabby focused on him with her eyes. "Hey, you," he whispered, tears pooling in his eyes. "You had us worried."

Gabby's eyes suddenly grew wide with panic, and the alarm on her ventilator began sounding. "Doc?" Antonio asked worriedly as Dr. Strand stepped over to Gabby's bed.

"Gabby, I need you to calm down, okay? You're on a ventilator," Dr. Strand explained calmly. "We're going to take your tube out in a minute, but I need you to calm down first, okay?"

"It's okay, baby; you're okay," Kelly soothed, stroking her hair. "Focus on me, okay? You're okay."

Once Gabby calmed down, the nurse began the process of disconnecting the ventilator and then Dr. Strand stepped in again. "Okay, Gabby. We're going to take your tube out now. But first I need you to try and cough for me. Can you do that?" Gabby obeyed, and Dr. Strand smiled. "Good. That's exactly what we want. This won't hurt, but it might feel a little uncomfortable. Now, on the count of three, I need you to take a deep breath in and then let it out, okay?" Gabby nodded and the doctor began counting. "One, two, three." On the third count, Dr. Strand swiftly pulled the tube out.

Gabby immediately began coughing, and Kelly looked at Dr. Strand with panic-filled eyes. "It's okay, this is normal. We're going to suction your mouth and airway to get rid of all of those secretions, okay?" Dr. Strand explained as the nurse began to suction. When she was finished, she slipped a nasal canula on Gabby. "We're going to keep you on oxygen for now, just to help you breathe better, okay? How do you feel?"

Gabby's voice was hoarse and raspy, "Sore."

Dr. Strand nodded. "That's normal, considering what you've been through. Do you remember anything?"

Kelly held his breath as he waited for Gabby to reply, unsure of whether it would be better for her to remember everything or nothing.

"Pain," Gabby rasped. "I remember being in pain." Her eyes grew wide and her hands flew to her stomach. Tears instantly filled her eyes and she looked up at Kelly. "The baby…"

Kelly couldn't stop his own tears from falling as he shook his head. "She-, uh, they-, they couldn't save her," he managed to get out finally, reaching for her hand again. She let him take it as she processed what he told her.

"I…I'm sorry, Kelly," she whispered through her tears.

Kelly was shaking his head before she even finished, leaning over her and stroking her hair. "No, no, it's not your fault, Gabby. You did everything right. There's nothing you could have done," he reassured her.

Antonio and the doctor both slipped out of the room, allowing the couple to be alone in their grief. Antonio slowly made his way to the waiting room, pausing just outside the doors to compose himself. The last thing he needed was everyone to panic the moment they saw him.

Brett was the first to spot him. She nudged Casey and then jumped to her feet, the rest of the room quickly following suit when they saw the reason. "How is she?" Brett asked hesitantly, unable to read Antonio's expression. His face was streaked with tears, but she was unsure whether they were happy tears, or if they meant something had happened.

"They were able to extubate her successfully," Antonio informed them. "She's awake and talking."

The room immediately erupted into noise. There were cheers, questions, and conversations all blending together. Antonio held up his hands, trying to get them to quiet down. When he was unsuccessful, Boden took control. "Alright, 51," he said in the same voice he used when taking control of a fire scene. "I know you're all excited, but let's quiet down and let Antonio speak."

Antonio took a deep breath before continuing. "From what I gathered, she doesn't remember much about what happened. She remembers being in pain, but that's about it. We, uh, Kelly told her about the baby."

"How's she doin'?" Herrmann asked gently.

Antonio shrugged. "As well as can be expected, I guess. I wanted to give her and Kelly some time alone while she processed the news. She, uh," Antonio struggled to maintain his composure. "I think she blames herself."

The room that had only minutes ago been filled with excitement and happiness now was cloaked in heavy silence. Many of them remembered when Matt and Gabby had lost their baby, and their heart broke for their former shiftmate and friend who had now suffered another loss.

Boden was the one to break the silence. "Alright, everyone. There's nothing more we can do here tonight, and we have shift tomorrow. Go home and get some rest. We'll update you if anything changes." The waiting room began to empty, and before long only Antonio, Boden, Casey, and Brett were left. Boden turned to Brett and Casey. "You two need to go home and get some rest, too." Casey started to argue, but Boden stopped him. "Casey, you've barely gotten any sleep in the past 48 hours. You're no good to anyone if you're dead on your feet. Go home, get some sleep, and you can come back in the morning."

Kelly sat on the edge of Gabby's bed, holding her in his arms as they both wept for the child that they'd lost. His heart ached at the fact that Gabby had instantly blamed herself. He knew how much she'd wanted the baby and could only imagine how it felt for her to wake up and realize that the child she'd so desperately wanted was gone. He kissed her softly on top of her head. He was so thankful that she was finally awake and that she was going to be okay, but he hated that she'd woken up to heartbreak.

"I know, baby," he whispered as he held her. "I know how much you wanted her; how much we both wanted her. There was nothing you could have done."

"We never gave her a name," Gabby said softly.

"We can give her a name now," Kelly replied gently.

Gabby looked up at him. "Brooklyn. I didn't have a chance to tell you, but I wanted to name her Brooklyn."

Brooklyn. After the city that they met in. "I like it," he whispered. "Brooklyn Elizabeth?"

Elizabeth was Shay's middle name. It only seemed appropriate that the baby was name after Leslie Elizabeth Shay, the woman who had been best friend to both of them.

"Okay," Gabby responded. "Brooklyn Elizabeth Severide."

They had never talked about whose last name the baby would have. "Severide? Are you sure? We can do Dawson-Severide, or even Dawson. Whatever you want," Kelly said gently.

Gabby shook her head. "I'm sure. I want her to have Severide as her last name."

The couple was interrupted by a knock on the door. They both looked up to find Boden standing in the door of Gabby's room, looking uncertain as to whether or not he should be there.

Gabby managed a small smile; the first Kelly had seen since she woke up. "Hey, Chief," she rasped. "Come on in."

"You had us all worried, Gabriela Dawson," Boden told her, forcing himself to sound upbeat and happy despite the fact that inside, his heart was breaking for the couple. "It's good to see you awake."

Gabby sat there for a moment, thinking, before she responded. "You were here, weren't you?" she asked. "I remember hearing your voice."

Boden nodded. "That was one of the few times I was able to convince Kelly to leave your side," he replied.

"I don't remember anything you said, but I remember hearing your voice," Gabby informed him. She then looked at Kelly. "And yours," she told him softly. "I remember hearing you tell me to fight. Antonio was here, too." She paused for a moment, looking confused. "Was Matt here, too?"

Kelly nodded. "He was at the airport when Brett got a hold of him. He said that he didn't feel right leaving until we knew you were okay." He smiled.

"You've had a lot of people pulling for you," Boden added. "Most of 51 has been here as much as possible since we got the call that you were in the hospital."

"How long has it been?" Gabby asked. It hadn't occurred to her until then that she had no idea how much time had passed.

"You were sedated for about forty-eight hours," Kelly informed her gently.

Gabby didn't have a chance to respond as they were interrupted by a nurse. "I'm afraid visiting hours are over. Gabby needs her rest."

Boden stood up. "We're back on shift tomorrow, but I'll stop by when I can," he informed them. "It's good to see you awake, Gabby."

"I'll be right back," Kelly told Gabby, sliding off of her bed and following Boden into the hallway. "Chief-," he started to say, but Boden cut him off.

"Don't worry about it, Kelly. Take as long as you need," Boden informed him. "You just focus on Gabby right now. We'll be fine without you."

When Kelly returned to Gabby's room, her eyes were closed. Kelly closed the door behind him and walked over to the chair next to her bed, trying to be as quiet as possible.

"I'm still awake," murmured Gabby, opening her eyes and turning her head to look at him.

"Hey," Kelly greeted her softly. "How are you feeling? Are you in any pain?"

Gabby shook her head. "Whatever they have me on must be good, because I don't feel a thing," she informed him. "I'm just tired."

"Go ahead and get some sleep," Kelly told her. "I'll be right here. I'm not going anywhere."

When Kelly woke up the next morning, he opened his eyes to see Gabby watching him. "Stop watching me sleep. It's creepy," he muttered, making Gabby smile. She'd said those exact same words to him when she caught him watching her sleep in New York. He stretched and blinked his eyes a few times, trying to wake up. "How'd you sleep?"

"Better than you, I'm sure," Gabby replied. "That chair doesn't look very comfortable."

Kelly shrugged. "It's fine. It's really not that bad once you get used to it."

Gabby took in Kelly's disheveled appearance. He had dark circles under his eyes, his clothes were wrinkled, and he had stubble on his face. "Have you been home at all?" she asked softly.

Kelly shook his head. "No; Cruz brought my bag from the firehouse, so I had a change of clothes, and Will Hallstead let me use the showers here. So there was no need for me to go home."

Gabby had heard what Boden had said the night before about Kelly hardly leaving her side, but until now she hadn't realized that he'd meant Kelly hadn't left the hospital at all. "Why?" she asked, biting her lip.

"Because," Kelly replied, leaning forward with a sigh, "I didn't need to. Like I said, I had a change of clothes and access to a shower. I didn't want to leave the hospital until I knew you were going to be okay."

"Has anyone ever told you that you're stubborn, Kelly Severide?" Gabby chided gently.

Kelly smirked. "All the time."

Gabby shifted over to one side of her bed, wincing as she did so. "Are you okay?" Kelly asked, worriedly. "Do you want me to get the nurse to bring you more pain medicine?"

Gabby shook her head. "No, I'm fine. Just need to remember to move more carefully next time," she assured him. She patted the bed next to her. "Come join me."

"Are you sure?" Kelly asked hesitantly. "I don't want to hurt you." When Gabby nodded, he carefully climbed onto the bed next to her. Gabby gingerly shifted until she could rest her head on his chest, and he gently wrapped his arm around her.

"You scared me," Kelly told her softly as he brushed her hair out of her face. "I thought I was going to lose you."

Gabby looked up at Kelly, searching his face. "The last thing I remember is being in pain and wishing that you were there," she began softly. "I was so scared, and I had no idea what was happening. I was afraid I was losing the baby, and all I could think of was how much I wanted you with me. I remember hearing your voice, though. You kept telling me to fight and not to give up."

"I'm glad you didn't," Kelly whispered, holding back tears at the thought of how close he came to losing her. He wanted so badly to tell her exactly how he felt, to tell her that he loved her, but now wasn't the right time. Not when the pain of losing the baby was so fresh for both of them.

"What happens now, Kelly?" Gabby asked. "Where do we go from here?"

"What happens now," Kelly replied, "is that you're going to focus on getting better, on recovering and getting out of here. For now, we take it one day at a time, at least until you're home."

"But where is home?" Gabby questioned. "Chicago was my home for most of my life, but after I left, Puerto Rico became home. Then I got pregnant, and I said goodbye to Puerto Rico, thinking that Chicago would be my home. But now; now there is no baby; there's nothing holding me here in Chicago."

"Nothing?" Kelly questioned, trying to keep his voice steady. Surely she wasn't already thinking about going back to Puerto Rico. Was he really nothing to her? Had he and Casey and everyone else been wrong in thinking that Gabby loved him? Maybe it was only because of the baby, and now that there was no baby, there was no them.

Gabby didn't miss the hurt that had flashed across Kelly's face, only for a second, before he had regained control of his emotions. She instantly regretted her choice of words. "Kelly, I didn't mean that. You're not nothing," she said quickly, trying to fix the mess she'd just made.

Unfortunately, Antonio chose just that moment to show up. "Hey, sis. How are you feeling?" he asked, coming over to the side of her bed and kissing her on the cheek."

Kelly took advantage of Antonio's appearance to slip off of Gabby's bed. "I'm going to go home and get a shower and a change of clothes," he told the brother and sister. "I'll be back later." And with that he walked out of Gabby's room.

Antonio stared after him, a puzzled expression on his face, before looking back at Gabby, who looked positively miserable. "You wanna tell me what that was about?" Antonio asked. "We could barely pry that man away from your bed the whole time you've been here, and now he's going home, just like that?"

Gabby looked up at Antonio, tears streaming down her face. "I think I made a mistake, 'Tonio," she told him.

Kelly sighed as he walked into his apartment. He tossed his keys and phone onto the counter, forever grateful to Joe Cruz for having brought his Mustang to the hospital from the firehouse, otherwise he would have been stuck taking an Uber home.

How could he have been so stupid to think that Gabby felt the same way about him as he did about her? He'd actually convinced himself that someone could actually love him, but, once again, he'd been wrong. So very wrong. It hadn't been him that she'd loved. It had been the baby. And maybe the idea of them being a family. But now there was no baby. Which meant there could be no family. And with it had left his Gabby. The one who had made him feel the way no one else could. The one who could make him smile even after a horrible shift. The one who had been there for him after he'd gotten injured, taking care of him and nursing him back to health. In her place was just Gabby. The Gabby who had been his coworker and friend for years. The Gabby who was his best friend's ex-wife.

He sat down on the couch and put his head in his hands. He should have known better. But instead, he'd let himself hope, let himself dream. And now he was back where he had been with it all began: alone with a broken heart.
