A/N: Gabby and Kelly have been through so much, and now this. It serves a purpose though; I promise I'm not putting them through all of this just to torture them!

When the rest of 51 arrived at Med, they quickly filed into the ER, anxious for news of their paramedics. They spotted Kelly waiting nervously outside one of the treatment rooms and made their way over to him.

"Chief…" Kelly greeted Boden, his voice rough with emotion.

Boden rested his hand on the squad lieutenant's shoulder. "How are they?" he asked gently.

"They're both hypothermic and took in a lot of water," Kelly replied worriedly. "Brett…they called a code for her room a few minutes ago. They were able to get her back, but I don't know anything else," he filled them in. "I don't know anything other than that." He looked worriedly at Boden. "Chief, someone needs to call Casey."

"I'll take care of it," Herrmann spoke up. "What about Antonio?"

Kelly shook his head. "Not yet; not until we know something else," he replied. He didn't want to worry Antonio unless it was absolutely necessary.

Herrmann nodded, taking off for the entrance, pulling his phone out of his pocket as he went.

Will Halstead walked out of a nearby treatment room and made his way over to them. "We're still working on warming Sylvie up, but she's stable for now," he informed them. "We had to intubate her, as she was having trouble breathing. She took in a lot of water and she's hypothermic. We'll know more once we're able to get her warmed up."

Boden nodded, thankful for an update on at least one of his paramedics. He just hoped that they'd reached them in time. He couldn't bear the thought of losing either one of them.

Herrmann returned a few minutes later. "Casey will be on the next flight out," he informed them. "Any update?"

Boden was about to fill him in on Brett's status when Dr. Choi came out of Gabby's treatment room. "Gabby's stable. She was suffering from extreme hypothermia when she was brought in, and she took in a lot of water. She's pretty banged up, likely from being thrown around in the back of the ambulance when the accident happened. Nothing appears to be broken, but we're concerned about internal bleeding. We'll be taking her to CT shortly. She's still unconscious, but she's breathing on her own."

Kelly sagged with relief, leaning against the wall for support. "She's going to be okay?" he asked.

Choi looked at the squad lieutenant with sympathy. Thanks to the gossip chain that was alive and well, the staff at Chicago Med were well aware of Kelly and Gabby's recent loss and how close they'd come to losing Gabby as well. "We'll know more once we get her warmed up and get the CT results, but the fact that she's breathing on her own is a good sign," he assured the worried group of firefighters. "I'll let you know as soon as I know anything else."

Maggie came over just then. "How 'bout you guys go to the waiting room?" she suggested gently. "You can get off your feet, and we'll let you know as soon as know anything else." She knew how worried they all were about their two paramedics, but she couldn't have them hanging out in the ER and getting in the way of other emergencies.

With much grumbling and complaining, the members of Firehouse 51 slowly made their way into the waiting room, taking up vigil there.

Kelly sat slumped in his chair, Herrmann on one side of him and Boden on the other. It seemed impossible that, just barely three months later, he was once again sitting in a waiting room, waiting to hear whether or not Gabby was okay. It wasn't fair. Nor was it fair that her best friend and partner, who was also his best friend's girlfriend, was also fighting for her life.

"How could this happen?" Kelly asked angrily. "Where's CPD? They need to catch the bastard that did this."

No sooner were the words out of Kelly's mouth than the Intelligence team came walking into the ER waiting room. Boden stood up to greet Voight. "Hank, thank you for coming."

"Of course," Voight replied. He turned to Kelly and the rest of the firehouse. "We're going to catch this guy; I can promise you that. We already have units out looking for the SUV."

"This is a little outside your wheelhouse, ain't it?" Herrmann asked.

"Gabby's family," Hank replied simply. "Besides, when some coward attacks two paramedics, it's everyone's business. We're not going to rest until we find this guy." He turned back to Boden. "Thanks to the witnesses, we were able to trace the SUV back to the victim's ex-husband, who she had a restraining order against. Our suspicion is that he stabbed her, then panicked and took off when her neighbor came in, but either didn't want her to be able to identify him later or didn't want her to survive period. Like I said, we have patrol units out searching for him right now."

Dr. Choi walked into the waiting room just then. Kelly leapt to his feet, quickly walking over to him. "How is she?" he asked anxiously.

"Gabby's spleen was damaged in the accident, and she's bleeding into her abdomen. We're getting ready to take her to surgery, but she's awake and asking for you," Choi informed him. "You can see her, but just for a minute. We need to get her up to surgery."

Kelly glanced back at Boden, who nodded. "Go be with Gabby. We'll update you if anything changes with Brett."

Kelly quickly followed Choi back to Gabby's treatment room. "Hi, baby," he murmured softly as he reached her bedside.

"Kelly," Gabby whispered weakly. "How's Brett?"

"They're treating her now," Kelly evaded answering the question. "Right now you need to focus on getting better yourself."

"I thought…I thought I was going to die," Gabby admitted, tears forming in her eyes. "I told Brett to tell you that I loved you."

"Shh," Kelly soothed. "It's okay. We got to you both in time."

"Severide," Choi called gently from the door. "We need to take her to surgery now."

Kelly kissed the top of Gabby's head. "I'll be there waiting when you come out of surgery, okay? I love you."

"I love you, too," Gabby replied.

Kelly watched as they wheeled Gabby out of the room and towards the OR.

Code Blue, Treatment Room 3. Code Blue, Treatment Room 3.

Kelly flattened himself against the wall as doctors and nurses rushed past him to Treatment Room 3. Brett's treatment room. He watched the flurry of activity in her room anxiously, silently pleading for her to pull through. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw people leaving her room, relief obvious on their faces. His relief was short lived, however, as he saw them wheeling Brett's bed from the room towards the OR.

Will was headed towards the waiting room when Kelly stopped him. "What's going on?" he asked. "What's wrong with Brett?"

"She started bleeding internally," Will told him. "Her scans revealed that her liver was damaged in the accident, so we're taking her to surgery to repair it."

Kelly nodded and headed for the OR waiting room as Will headed for the ER waiting room. He knew it wouldn't be long before he was joined by the rest of the firehouse.
