CH14

She awoke on a hard surface and stirred with discomfort as the place she was laying in was now hot and stuffy. Her nose twitched at the scent of charred meat, and opened one of her eyes. Forgetting where she was, that eye shot around wildly.

The biker husky she met last night was sliding something to her. Both her eyes opened and she could barely make out that it was a snake, a dead one.

"Urm… morning." Gasket greeted awkwardly. "Brought you something to eat."

January rolled over on her stomach and and sniffed the dead reptile. Heat radiated from it and a good amount of it's diamond–scaled skin was torn off, revealing lightly cooked meat. Her stomach growled, It smelled so good.

"A rattlesnake I ran over this morning, charred on the hot pavement." She presented proudly. "It's somewhat our signature dish out here."

January scrutinized it before meeting the husky's gaze. "You haven't ate?"

"I got a half eaten noodle cup out of a trash can on the way over here, I'm good." She explained.

January nodded. "Good, the leader always eats first, and thank you."

Gasket gave a simple nod.

She took a nibble on the light red meat, then began to chew slabs of it off the bone. It definitely tasted better than the stale meat back in the labs. She looked up and couldn't hear or smell any signs of the other two.

"The boys here?" January asked.

"No, Dwayne drove off this morning with Hubcap. I think he's still pretty pissed about what happened last night." Gasket explained.

"…you didn't try to stop them?"

"Hey if they want to go off and do their own thing for the day, I can't stop them." Gasket said with her paws up. "Besides, I don't want to be around Hubcap anyway."

January didn't respond, she couldn't really blame her in that regard.

Gasket pulled something else out of her pup pack, a glass bottle half filled with clear water and placed it beside the feasting wolf dog. January eyed it but didn't say anything as she continued to chow down on the snake.

"Don't worry, I haven't drank out of yet… and it's clean, filtered from dew water from my dew collector outside, one of my most useful and proudest inventions." Gasket beamed.

January finished with the snake and tossed it's skeletal remains to the side before chugging down the water, drinking every last drop. She truly felt renewed now, fresh meat, clean water, fresh air, and a good nights sleep without hearing those dreaded voices.

"Ouuu." She winced and whimpered as a beam of sunlight from one of the windows pelted her face as she tried to stand up.

"Oh snap." Gasket muttered as she remembered one of Chase's warnings. "Hey I've got something that can help with that, follow me to the back room."

Without hesitation, January creeped close behind Gasket and followed her into said room, keeping low to the ground to avoid the rays of piercing light. The back room itself seemed like it was added and wasn't part of the original diner. The walls were mostly made up of tarnished sheet metal with a tear in a tarp wall serving as a door. January assumed it was Gasket that was behind the construction.

Gasket flipped on a dim light bulb via a cloth string that barely revealed a rather spacious interior. An old toolbox, sofa, and a few foldable tables stood against each side of the room with more tools and scrap metal scattered along the table tops. Underneath one of the tables were a few car batteries that appeared to be the rooms's power supply with insulated wires attached to them that connected to several devices including the light bulb.

On the floor beside the tarp sat a makeshift welding device, Gasket grabbed something off of it. Walking over to January she presented a pair of welding goggles in her paw. January leaned in and studied them before taking them and starting the troublesome process of putting them on.

While she worked on that, Gasket moved over to one of her tables and began work on some large object, pulling over the welder and a tinted mask. She waited until January had the goggles on before she made adjustments to the welder settings and began to make light 'taps' with the electrode.

"Fit well?" Gasket asked, her voice muffled by the mask.

"Well enough, thank you." January responded. She couldn't see much better but they definitely helped with bright light. Without them, she knew those bright arcs coming from the electrode would certainly sting.

"Don't mention it." Gasket said. "Now I can finally talk… I can handle long conversations better when I'm working."

"Talk?"

"Yeah, just want to get to know the dog that scared the sh@! out of us last night." Gasket said as she worked.

"A pup your age shouldn't use such profanity." January chastised as she moved closer to see what gasket was working on, and also to hear her better.

"Trust me, you get a mouth like this if you're in the Ruff Ruff Pack as long as I am." Something went wrong with the welder as the electrode stuck to the rim and the arc stopping, Gasket made some adjustments and got it back working again. "The first thing I want to know is why in the world Chase decided to drop you off with us, I mean, I appreciate you asserting yourself and making me the leader but that police pup isn't exactly our friend."

"He said there weren't any people here, just you and your pack, which works perfectly for me." She answered earnestly. She could see Gasket was working on a metal seat of some kind.

"…So you don't like humans?"

"I don't trust them, most of them at least."

Gasket hummed as she made some more adjustments to the welder before she continued her work. "…Are humans responsible for those scars all over you?"

"…Yes." Was January's long awaited answer.

Gasket could make out a tremble in the wolf dog's voice and could sense her heavy emotions so she decided to move onto the next question.

"So where did they rescue you from? I haven't really seen you around here or Adventure Bay."

"…The labs." January muttered.

"Okay, but where?" Gasket prodded lightly.

"Underground, far from here. I was down there for… I don't know how long but I was close to death, I could feel it." January explained through gritted teeth.

"Wow, sounds like Chase got there in the nick of time, huh."

January didn't respond. She watched as Gasket cut the welder off and lift up her mask before grabbing another tool on the table. It appeared to be a small vacuum like object with a metal disk at the end.

"Now, time for the finishing touches." Gasket said proudly as she held up the tool before wrapping the end wires around one of the battery's poles.

"What are you working on young one?" January asked, now intrigued by the object.

"Something for my bike, you'll see once I'm done." Gasket said, not wanting to spoil it.

"Oh." January muttered as she watched the tool turn on. It was apparent to her now that it was an angle grinder as sparks flew from the metal when it made contact with the welds. Most of the sparks hit Gasket's fur but the husky didn't seemed too bothered by them.

It didn't take long for Gasket to grind the welds down and she cut the grinder off before exclaiming "Ta da!"

"Is that a… sidecar?" January asked, piecing what she thought it was.

"Yep, it is!" Gasket revealed excitingly. "I've been working on and off on it for so long in case we had another member in the pack who didn't have their own bike. Now, it's finally done!"

January couldn't help but smile at the husky's excitement. She watched as she ordered her claw out of her pup pack and grabbed the sidecar.

"Hey, if it's not too much to ask, can you give me a paw?" Gasket asked as she struggled to lift the makeshift sidecar with her claw.

The wolf dog immediately went over and instead decided to grab one of the bars with her jaws. With the help of Gasket's claw, they were easily able to lift it off the table and carried out of the room before making their way out of the diner.

January felt the sun's heat assault her and was amazed by how well she can see now. They stopped at the husky's parked bike and dropped the sidecar. January scanned around and could see as far as the distant mirage.

"Ruff! Wrench!" Gasket ordered as her pup claw retrieved a wrench from her pup pack. She leaned the sidecar on it's side and attached it to her bike before tightening up the bolts with her wrench.

"Woah." Gasket muttered in amazement as the sidecar seem to fit just right. She was eager to test it out and her eyes widened as an idea struck her. She turned to face the wolf dog who was still taking in her environment.

"Hey January, you want to go riding with me and maybe cause some wheel trouble!?" Gasket boomed.

January caught the last bit of her request and she narrowed her pale eyes at the husky. "Do you think it's wise to cause trouble after what Chase did last night."

"huh?" Gasket frowned. "Hey! He said we can cause all the trouble we want and the PAW Patrol will look the other way, it was part of the deal!"

January sighed. "He goes against his code and might have broken one of his friendships just so I can stay safe, and you want to abuse that?"

"…well, that was his fault then!" Gasket blurted.

"Your pack has no sense of decency, does it?"

Gasket huffed in defeat. "Come on I really want you to go riding with me, and it will just just be a little mischief. Not enough to alert the PAW Patrol anyway and you might actually like it, please?" The husky pleaded.

"Hmm." January thought for a moment, she had never rode on a motorcycle before, much less a sidecar. "Alright, but I don't want any part of whatever trouble you're planning."

"Sweet!" Gasket yipped.

Gasket immediately hopped on her bike and cut it on. The engine starting did startle January but she didn't hesitate when Gasket patted the sidecar. It was a bit of a tight fit but she made it work.

"You might want to buckle in." Gasket warned. "I go fast."

January took the leather belt that acted as a seatbelt and fastened herself the best she could, she tightened her paws around one of the bars.

They shot off down the desert road.

January's eyes were as wide as saucers under her goggles as she fought the wind.

She does go fast!
