Don't You Remember – Chapter 3
"Darling, I do not want you to work after you graduate. I would like to start a family and for you to stay home with our children."
"What? You are crazy! We have talked about this, I have spent the last three years going to medical school. I have worked hard and am completing the program ahead of schedule. I am due to start my residency a week after graduation. I will not give all of that up. I want to have children but not right now. You don't understand me, you never have. I don't know why I agreed to marry you."
"You agreed to marry me because you love me and besides our parents have agreed that it would be a great way to merge our family's wealth."
"I thought I loved you but I am not sure anymore. I think I might have loved the thought of you and of us, but you are not the same person I have grown up with. You never mentioned that I cannot work after I graduate. Why would I spend all this time studying to become a doctor if I had no plans on working as a doctor?"
"Come on, you want to be a coroner, is that really even a doctor?"
"Garrett, you are really something, of course a medical examiner is a doctor. How come you have never mentioned that you desire that I stay at home."
"I thought you knew. When we talked about having children, I assumed you knew that I would like for you to stay home with our children."
"Garrett, you cannot and should not make assumptions. I do not desire to have children at this point in my life. I would like to wait. I would like to … you know what I don't want to have this conversation with you right now. I'm not sure I want to have any conversations with you. I am going for a ride on my motorcycle."
"Darling, you know you shouldn't ride that motorcycle it is too dangerous. Why can't you just drive that nice convertible I just bought you. Matter of fact give me the keys to the death trap. I will have it taken back to the dealership where you purchased it and maybe they can retrieve some of the money you had paid for it." He attempted to take her keys. She was able to maintain control of the keys.
"No, I love my motorcycle and you cannot tell me what to do. We are not married, not that you could tell me what to do if we were married. Matter of fact, I no longer want to marry you." She felt a little rebellious as she took off her engagement ring and threw it at him and walked away. She put on her helmet and took off on her motorcycle.
They were to be married later that year but she just couldn't do it. He was becoming too controlling. He thought he could tell her what she could and couldn't do. She didn't like that, she wanted to be her own person. He didn't want her to work after they got married. He wanted her to stay home and be a mom.
She wanted to be a medical examiner. Why go to college if she could not become a doctor liked she had planned. She was getting ready to graduate and would then start her residency. She was years ahead in school and she decided right then that she would rather work towards her goal than marry him.
She felt that maybe someday she would meet someone that understood her and wanted to make a life with her without having to change who she was. She did want to be married and have children one day. If she didn't meet someone when she was ready for children, she told herself she would adopt a child. She was adopted and she knew there were plenty of children that would love to be adopted.
She took off on her motorcycle a little faster than she had meant to. She was upset and was a little aggressive with the throttle. She had slowed down but a few miles down the road a SUV pulled out in front of her having not seen the motorcycle. Her motorcycle was struck and flipped over on her as it slid a few hundred feet from the SUV that had struck it.
She was upset because she had just broken off her engagement with Garrett Fairfield. She had tears rolling down her cheeks.
She woke up in the hospital. She had been unconscious when she arrived. The doctor explained the injuries that she had sustained and told her that she would no longer be able to have children. She spent a few days in the hospital and then left the hospital knowing that her dream of someday giving birth to a child and becoming a mother was gone.
When her first year of residency slowed down a little, Dr. Maura Isles, checked into adoption. One of the nurses, Bella, that worked at the hospital she was doing her residency at also worked at a free clinic. Bella knew that their client, Jane, from the Free Clinic was putting her baby up for adoption and told Maura about Jane without giving any names. Bella thought it would be a great match.
Bella knew that Jane was drug-free and had a great health history. Jane had told Bella enough about the baby's father to know that he was also drug-free with a great health record. That was a huge item on Maura's list.
"Bella, this sounds like a great opportunity, this could benefit both of us. The young mother and myself. Let me contact my attorney. Please let your friend know that I am interested in adopting her baby."
"Of course, Dr. Isles."
"Bella, please call me Maura. You are one of the few people around here that even treat me nicely. I would like to think that we are friends."
"Of course, Maura. I do consider you a friend. I will talk to my friend and let her know that a lawyer will be contacting her."
"Thank you, Bella. This means a great deal to me."
When their conversation finished Maura went into the break room and immediately contacted her lawyer. Her lawyer gave her the name of a reputable adoption lawyer. Maura phoned the adoption lawyer and made an appointment for later that day. She was fortunate that he had a break in his schedule and could meet with her that day.
At the meeting with Maura, the adoption lawyer drew up a contract and the two ladies just needed to sign it. No names would be exchanged, all of the transactions would be conducted through the adoption lawyer. Maura signed all the papers and her name and signature were blocked so that Jane could not see the name of the woman who would be adopting her baby. Maura's lawyer, the adoption lawyer and Bella were the only people that knew the identity of the two women.
Maura had her lawyer set up an account for the baby's mother so that she could be provided a monthly stipend. The mother was to turn over all medical bills and they would be paid for. The lawyer let Maura know that the mother didn't have reliable transportation so Maura paid for a vehicle for her.
Maura basically explained to her lawyer that she wanted the baby's mother's medical expenses to be paid as well as her college tuition. She also stipulated that the mother would continue to receive her monthly stipend until she graduated from college. She wanted the mother to achieve her dream after college. The lawyer had free reign to make that happen.
Maura thought about how that sounded, she felt the mother might think that she was buying the baby. Maura felt that way at times, but basically, she just wanted the mother to have every advantage that she had had. She wanted a baby and through circumstances beyond both of their control, Maura was achieving her goal and she wanted the baby's mother to obtain her goal as well.
It took her lawyer two days but he drew up an amendment to their contract and presented the amendment to the contract to Maura for review. Maura approved it and he took it to Jane for her signature. Jane couldn't believe that this woman was being so generous. "I don't understand, why is she agreeing to continue paying me the stipend after she has the baby?" Jane asked.
"It is simple, Miss Rizzoli, my client desires for you to achieve your goal of graduating from college and she is so thankful that you are willing to let her adopt your baby, thus achieving her goal of becoming a mother. She fears you will feel as she is buying your baby and that is not her intention. She is a very generous woman and the gift you are giving her is priceless, she doesn't want you to worry about your finances or having to work while you are going to school." He answered her.
"Please tell her thank you for me."
"I will pass along your message. Thank you for coming in and signing the amendment to your contract. Let me make a copy for your records.
Ten Years Later
Dr. Maura Isles walked into headquarters of BPD. She was well dressed and everyone was staring at her. She was quite used to this behavior from people. She had on 4-inch heels and a very expensive dress and blazer. "Hello, I am Dr. Maura Isles, I have an appointment with Lieutenant Sean Cavanaugh in the Homicide Division."
"Yes, Dr. Isles, he is expecting you. Let me get someone to take you up to Homicide." Officer Johnson told her.
Jane was walking out of the Division One Café and overheard Officer Johnson saying she is going to Homicide. "Hey, Johnson, I can take her up to the lieutenant."
"Thanks, Detective Rizzoli, I guess, do you remember how to get there?" Officer Johnson said as he giggled slightly.
"Really Johnson. You had to go there?"
"Hey Rizzoli, I couldn't resist. Dr. Isles, here is your visitor badge. You must wear the badge the entire time you are in the building. Don't let Detective Rizzoli tell you otherwise."
"Thank you, Officer Johnson. I will leave the visitor badge on during my stay." Maura stated as she placed the visitor badge on herself slightly behind her left shoulder.
"Dr. Isles, I am Homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli. I guess we will be working together. Nice to have another female on the team." Jane said as she escorted her to the elevator. "I am assuming that you are our new Chief, Medical Examiner?" She stated as they stepped into the elevator. Jane pushed the number '3' to send them to bullpen.
"I don't make a habit out of assuming things, but yes, I am the new Chief Medical Examiner. If I continue with your assumption then I would state with absolute confidence that there is a strong possibility that we will be working together."
The elevator chimed signifying that they have arrived at the third floor. Jane continued to escort Dr. Isles to the Lieutenant's office. Jane knocked when they arrived at the door. She heard him say 'come in' so she opened the door and told him, "Sir, Dr. Isles is here to meet with you." She allowed Dr. Isles to enter the office upon a nod from Lt. Cavanaugh.
"Oh, glad you two have met. Rizzoli, can you ask Korsak and Frost to come in, please?"
"Sure, lieutenant." Jane said as she stepped out of the office to call for Korsak and Frost. They quickly rose and met her at the opened door. She knocked just to let him know that they are there. He motioned them in.
"Please, everyone please have a seat. This is Dr. Isles, she is our new Chief Medical Examiner. I don't know or care what they did with Dr. Pike, as Dr. Isles will now be our medical examiner as well as the Chief for the Commonwealth. She comes highly recommended. Dr. Isles, you have met Detective Rizzoli already. This is the rest of her Homicide team, Detective Sergeant Vincent Korsak and Detective Barold Frost. They are my best homicide team and I hope with your help they will become even better."
Maura shook each of their hands and said, "It is a pleasure to meet you." She returned to her seat and told the lieutenant, "I will do my best to help all of your teams. I will have a few new lab technicians starting this week as well. The Governor is also letting me hire an assistant medical examiner within the next three months. He increased my budget so I can order some updated equipment that will speed up the processing time of evidence. If there is anything else I can do to speed up our processing time I will take it up with the Governor's office."
"Thank you, Dr. Isles, it sounds like you are hitting the ground running."
"Yes sir, I am very well versed in the duties of my office and I plan on doing my very best."
"Rizzoli, can you escort Dr. Isles to her office downstairs and introduce her to Sr. Criminologist Chang? She in turn will introduce Dr. Isles to her staff. Once you introduce them you may return to your paperwork on your desk."
"Yes sir." Jane said as she frowned, she was hoping to get a bigger break from her paperwork. Jane did as she was instructed, she escorted Dr. Isles down to the morgue and introduced her to Sr. Criminologist Chang and promptly returned to her desk to work on her paperwork.
