Resumen:
Charlie no era el tipo que elegiría alguien como Nick; demasiado desgarbado, nervioso y nerd para ser una opción real para Rugby King y una persona increíble, Nick Nelson.
O bien, Charlie escucha a Nick mencionar un novio y comienza a girar en espiral a partir de ahí.
Notas:
No sé, tengo un problema. Se me ocurrió esta idea anoche y me dejé escribir. Es corto y lindo, creo.
Compartí esto con algunos amigos, pero nadie realmente lo editó o lo beta, por lo que cualquier error se debe a que los extrañé.

Texto de trabajo:
"Consultaré con mi novio y te lo haré saber".
Charlie se detuvo antes de que pudiera doblar la esquina hacia la sala de estudio. Esa voz era inequívocamente la de Nick, probablemente hablando con alguien por teléfono, la falta de respuesta audible casi confirmaba esa teoría.
Novio.
Nick tenía novio.
Por supuesto que lo hizo.
¿Y qué si él y Charlie habían estado saliendo casi todos los días desde que se conocieron hace dos meses en el primer evento de orgullo universitario del año? ¿Y qué si Charlie casi podía sentir la electricidad entre ellos cada momento que estaban juntos? ¿Y qué si Nick nunca le había mencionado un novio?
Charlie no era el tipo que elegiría alguien como Nick; demasiado desgarbado, nervioso y nerd para ser una opción real para Rugby King y una persona increíble, Nick Nelson.
"Sí, sí, podría referirme a él por su nombre porque me gusta decir 'novio', ¡demándame! Pero es un verdadero nerd de la música, así que estoy seguro de que le encantará". Nick se rió de algo que dijo la persona al teléfono. "Sí, por supuesto. Está bien, te lo haré saber. ¡Adiós!"
Estaba tranquilo de nuevo. Charlie debería haber doblado la esquina y encontrarse con Nick como estaba planeado. Pero estaba clavado en el suelo, tratando con todas sus fuerzas de evitar la angustia que podía sentir arremolinándose en su pecho. Sin darse cuenta, dejó escapar un pequeño suspiro de decepción, apenas audible, incluso en el silencio del espacio.
"¡Charlie!" Nick había asomado la cabeza fuera de la sala de estudio, evidentemente habiendo escuchado el suspiro. Vio a Charlie inmediatamente. "¿Por qué estás parado ahí fuera?"
No era justo que Nick le sonriera así cuando tenía novio. ¿Cómo se suponía que Charlie dejaría de suspirar por él cuando todavía miraba a Charlie con esas mejillas bellamente sonrojadas y esos ojos dulces?
Lo siento, lo escuché en el teléfono, no quería interrumpir. Entró, ocupándose de acomodarse en su asiento para poder evitar el contacto visual con Nick.
"Sin palabrotas, Char, vamos". Charlie aún no levantó la vista, pero podía escuchar la sonrisa en la voz de Nick. No. Justa. "En realidad, quería hablar contigo sobre cosas de esa llamada de todos modos".
Ya no puedo salir contigo porque tengo novio, y tu gran y vergonzoso enamoramiento por mí es tan obvio, y nunca te corresponderé porque ¿mencioné que tengo novio?
"De acuerdo." La voz de Charlie era pequeña y mantuvo los ojos pegados a la mesa.
"My friends, Tara and Darcy — you probably saw them at the event where we meant, actually — are in a band. They have their first proper gig this Friday. I know you usually have virtual film nights, but I wanted to see if you could come?"
"Oh. Um, I'm not sure." Was Nick hoping to introduce Charlie to his boyfriend at this event? That must be it; why else would he be inviting him? "Tao's pretty particular."
"No, I know, but I wasn't sure if he would be okay with moving it to Saturday or something. I'd, uh, really like you to be there. And I want you to meet my friends!"
"And your boyfriend?" He hadn't meant to say it. And he certainly hadn't meant for it to sound so bitter. But Charlie couldn't corral the words back into his mouth. They had escaped, twisted and ugly, into the world for Nick to see just how spiteful he could be.
"What?" Charlie almost looked up at that, the pure confusion in Nick's voice startling him.
"I heard you say on the call that you had to ask your boyfriend. So do you want me to meet him too?"
Nick gave a small laugh, a noise of confusion rather than an expression of amusement. "Why would I want you to meet yourself? How would that even work?"
And that made Charlie look up. But instead of finding a malicious grin on Nick's face or a gaggle of bullies behind him, he just saw Nick, eyebrows knitted together and lips pursed in puzzlement.
"I'm… your boyfriend?" Even just asking the question made Charlie feel fizzy inside.
"Aren't you?" Nick now looked embarrassed along with confused. "Oh god, did I get this all wrong?"
If Charlie weren't currently experiencing technical difficulties in his brain, he would have answered with some reassurances. Instead, he blurted out: "You haven't tried to kiss me."
"Well, no. You told me about what had happened to you with your… ex, and I didn't want to pressure you into anything before you were ready. I've been very okay with taking it slow." Nick's face was bright red.
Charlie wanted to cry. Nick hadn't been holding back due to lack of interest; he had been holding back because he cared enough about Charlie to be gentle with him.
"I didn't know I was your boyfriend. How long have I been your boyfriend?"
Nick huffed out a small laugh, more of a breath than anything, but enough to diffuse some tension. "I started referring to you as my boyfriend about a month ago? After that movie day we had?"
They'd attempted to watch the entirety of Phase One of the MCU on a random Saturday. Nick had pulled Charlie close to him almost immediately, but Charlie dared not classify it as cuddling. He'd made them lunch and dinner, played with Charlie's hair throughout all of Thor, and had entwined their fingers halfway through Captain America: The First Avenger. Charlie couldn't remember a single detail from those movies, but he had committed to memory how perfectly his head fit in the crook of Nick's shoulder, how many calluses he had on his hands from rugby.
"Oh."
"Should I… was I wrong? About us?"
"I didn't know you liked me!"
That drew a full laugh from Nick, boyish and bright. "Charlie, I've been so obvious! Do you think I go around looking at everyone the way I look at you? Finding any excuse to spend time together? Do you think I cuddle with just anyone?"
"Nick, you're like the most sought-after person on this campus. You're so sweet and handsome and funny, how am I supposed to think someone like that would be interested in me?"
Nick's smile softened until it could only be described as sickeningly fond. "The moment I saw you, I was done for."
"Hey boyfriend?" Nick beamed. "You should kiss me."
Nick leaned in close, whispering against Charlie's lips, "Happily."
