Let Them Eat Cake
Ben shifted nervously, looking over at Charlotte. "Do you think I'm making a mistake? I mean… marriage is a life long commitment."
"One second," Charlotte said. "Jonathan, I trust you to be able to handle things. You're the best assistant I've ever had. One day you are going to be a CEO, I just know it, so think of this as merely a trial run! Now, I need to head inside for the wedding, okay?" She smiled after a moment. "Bye Jonathan." Hanging up her cellphone Charlotte turned to Ben. "So, what truly has you worried?"
"I… I'm just worried that this isn't the right thing to do!" Ben whimpered.
"Let me ask you something: if you saw Elaine with another man how would that make you feel?"
"I… what?"
"If she was with someone else how would you feel?"
"Startled because it's our wedding day."
Charlotte rolled her eyes. "Let me try again. Assume you decide not to go through with this… how would you feel if a year from now you saw Elaine with another man?" Ben frowned at that. "Or learned they'd moved in." He swallowed. "Had kids?" He truly thought about that and paled. "Would you be okay… or would you begin thinking how that should be you? That you should be the one with her?"
"I… I see what you're saying." He smiled. "And that makes a ton of sense."
"Its good you are worried," Charlotte told him. "It means you're thinking. Too many people rush into marriage blind. You are actually considering what this means for both of you."
"…thanks Charlotte," Ben said softly, relieved.
Didi, who'd overheard Charlotte's conversation, smiled… and thought that it might be a smart idea to talk to Elaine and give her that speech.
Just in case.
"Oh, sorry champ," Stu said, picking Tommy up as the baby tried to crawl off the pew in order to go searching for the cake. "We need to sit through the ceremony, okay? Can you be good and be quiet?" Tommy, putting it together that if he was quiet he'd get cake, smiled and accepted the small squishy picture book his daddy gave him to play with, happily flipping through it even as Angelica threw flowers and some pretty lady walked down the aisle in a white dress and everyone applauded at the end.
And it turned out that being quiet DID mean he got cake! And other food too!
He looked at Chuckie and grinned before diving in for more, both babies quite content as the bride and groom danced away the night.
