Spike Runs Away

"Spike, get away from there," Stu said, walking across the yard and nudging Spike away from the fence. The dog had seen a bug and been trying to chase it out of the yard only to come up against the fence Stu had repaired a few days ago. "Glad I got everything nailed in tight… don't want you are the kids slipping out." He scratched Spike's head. "Come on, let's get back to bed."

And they did.

~The Next Day…~

"Billings, come here for a moment."

"What is it chief?" Billings asked, walking into his boss' office.

"I want to discuss how you've been handling missing dog cases," the head of the dog pound said.

"You aren't taking me off the Snuffles Investigation! I know the mob was involved." He shook his head. "I'll get Mendoza to talk-"

The chief just stared at him. "Billings, remember how two days ago that chunk of drywall hit you on the head and you said you didn't need to go to the hospital even though blood was trinkling out of your ears?"

"No. I remember dealing with a lost poodle. I just know she's mixed up with the drug racket."

"Billings," Marty, the head of the pound, said softly, "I think you might have brain damage."

"I don't, chief and I will stay on this case! I don't care what the mayor says-"

"You have a dog bone in a gun holster. Billings…" Marty sighed and motioned towards to paramedics who'd been standing by. "We're going to get you the best help, okay?"

"I'm a good cop!" Billings screamed as he was dragged away.

"You… no you aren't," Marty said sadly as the delusional man was dragged away.

"Don't feel so bad, I think there are some drugs in the water," another paramedic told Marty. "Just this week we had the Scalp Collector, the old man who was killed by his pet poodle, dealt with a baby who keeps eating dog food, and that crazed pet shop owner who shoved an elephant in an aquarium."

"…dog food?"
