Jonathan Babysits

"Charlotte… do you have a moment?"

"Well of course, Jonathan," Charlotte said with a smile, motioning for her assistant to sit down across from her. "What can I do for you?"

"…I want to know why?"

"Why what?"

"Why are you so nice to me?" he asked. "The other assistants… they do minor tasks but you are always giving me these huge projects. Not because you are passing off the work but because you want me to get experience. And you never take credit for yourself and you always tell me you believe in me and-"

Charlotte let him ramble for a few moments more before gently cutting him off. "Its simple, Jonathan. I know what its like to start at the bottom. I didn't get where I am now instantly… I was just like you. And a lot of my bosses… well, they were jerks. Especially after Angelica was born." She looked over at a photo of her daughter and Tommy smiling and laughing. "They all thought just because I was a mother I couldn't do the job. Some because they were rude… and others because they were being too nice. I swore to myself I'd never be like that.

"my brother-in-law and sister-in-law were a massive help with Angelica and I swore I would pay back that kindness to the world. I know your talents, Jonathan. You are smart and you are determined. And I know one day you are going to do amazing things. And when you are ready I will give you every recommendation I can. That's why I am the way I am with you Jonathan: because I know you can do it."

"…thank you Charlotte," Jonathan said, moved.
