The First Cut

"I don't know, Flicky," Peeky said, looking out through the branches and leaves that made up their home, "I don't think it's a good idea for us to go out there. Your mom was really clear that we should stay here in the nest."

"Come on Peeky!" Flicky exclaimed, waving a stubble wing towards the sun that was peaking through the branches. "Don't you want to see what is out there beyond this bush?"

"Not really," Peeky admitted. "Its safe in the nest. We don't have to worry about buggies or fuzzy tails…"

"And you aren't really good at walking or flying yet," Fluff reminded the youngest of the three.

"And its not safe!" Peeky remined. "You're mommy doesn't want us to get into trouble!"

"Aw, come on!" Flicky said happily. "We're hatchings! We're supposed to get into trouble!" With that the little bird hopped out of the nest and began to move towards the leaves and branches. He was so excited! He couldn't wait to see what was outside-"

"Oh, no no no!" his mommy said as she flew back into the bushes. "We can't go out there… you aren't big enough yet. Now, lets get you a nice worm and then get you tucked in for bed."

Flicky began to chirp. It wasn't fair! All he wanted to do was go on adventures and his mommy wouldn't let him! Why was she keeping him from having fun!?

"…did you pick on a bird?" Trixie asked.

"WHAT IF THEY WERE COMPETENT!?" Mr. Chaos roared.

Tommy suddenly looked up, confused. He had the sense that he had just dodged a bullet… though he had no idea what a bullet was. Still, he went back to playing, happy that he got to have fun.
