Chapter 5
"Obelisk the Tormentor"
Inside the Domino Museum, Yami, Tea, Fluttershy, Spike and Rarity were looking around at the many artifacts on display in the exhibit. 'This exhibit has to have some clues that can help Yami uncover his past.' Fluttershy thought. "You're sure you want to go through with this, right?" Tea asked. "I have no choice. It's my destiny" Yami answered. Soon, who should show up but Twilight and the others. "Twilight?" Spike asked. "Spike? Fluttershy? Rarity? Yami? Tea? What are you all doing here?" Rainbow asked. "They're helping me uncover some of the mysteries around my past." Yami explained. "What are you all doing here?" Tea asked. "Well, as you know, we come from another world, so we're trying to find some kind of connection between Egypt and a similar land where we live called Somnambula." Twilight explained. "Then perhaps we can help each other." Yami suggested. "That should work. After all, nine heads are better than five." AJ said. Suddenly, looked towards a roped off, but open, door.
"What is it, Yami?" Fluttershy asked. "I sense something in here." Yami answered. "Down in the basement?" AJ asked. "I wonder if this is part of the exhibit." Twilight said as the Eye of Anubis appeared on Yami's forehead. "Something down there is calling out to me. I feel that the answers I seek, are near." Yami said before making his way down. Spike and the girls followed him, unsure of what could be calling to the ancient Egyptian spirit. And that's when they found it, the very tablet that Ishizu showed Seto Kaiba. "It looks like a giant tablet." Twilight said. "And those carvings look like Duel Monsters!" Spike added. They examined the tablet further and saw the carving of the Nameless Pharaoh, and it struck them all as familiar.
"No way! That guy looks just like you!" Tea said in shock. "Does that means this could be the clue to your past?" Rainbow asked. "I assure you, Rainbow, this is real. Somehow, I know it is. And look, around his neck." Yami responded. "Well, I'll be. That's the Millennium Puzzle!" AJ said in surprise. "You're right. That appears to be me playing an ancient form of Duel Monsters back when I was alive and as human as you are." Yami said. "This is exactly the clue I've been searching for, but I wish I was able to decipher its meaning." he continued. "Yeah. For one thing, who are you dueling against in this carving?" Spike asked. "And what was this game all about?" Twilight added. "I'm not sure if it was even just a friendly game at all." AJ pointed out. "Just when I think I've found one answer, a thousand new questions arise." Yami said. Suddenly, the curator of the exhibit, Ishizu Ishtar, appeared behind them. "My Pharaoh. I've been expecting you." she said before the group turned to see her.
"Who are you?" Yami asked. "Are you the curator of this exhibit?" Twilight asked. "Yes, I am. I am Ishizu Ishtar. And I have uncovered many mysteries about you and these ancient carvings using the magic of my Millennium Necklace." Ishizu answered as her Millennium Item gleamed in the light. "Another Millennium Item. That makes five that we've seen put together." Rarity said in amazement. "Like your Millennium Puzzle, this necklace affords me certain powers. With it, I have gazed 5,000 years into the past, to a time when evil sorcerers threatened to destroy the entire world." Ishizu explained, shocking most of the group. "However, there was one king who possessed a magic powerful enough to stop this evil threat." she continued. "And who was this king?" Yami asked. "The Pharaoh who saved the world was you, Yami. And now the time has come for you to save mankind once again." Ishizu answered, revealing she knew Yami's name the whole time. "To save mankind? From what? How do you know the world is in danger once again?" Yami asked. "My Millennium Necklace also showed me visions of the future, my Pharaoh. I believe the events from the past are unfolding once more, and that same great evil will return to threaten all of existence" Ishizu explained.
"But how will Yami recognize this evil?" Twilight asked. "I know that my Pharaoh's memory has faded, and that he seeks many answers. I also know that a Duel Monsters tournament will soon begin. Perhaps, if you win it, you will find your answers." Ishizu responded before turning to walk away. Suddenly, Twilight had a thought. "Miss Ishtar, did your Millennium Necklace show you visions of strangers from a far away land appearing in Egypt during Yami's reign as Pharaoh?" she asked. "Yes. But there was only one stranger. They wore a cloak and claimed to be from a land far beyond our own." Ishizu answered. "Did they take anything with them back to their land?" Rarity asked. "Yes. An incantation that implied something known as world to world transference. It is said that this incantation could bring objects from one world and into another. There was also another incantation they took with them that would grant incredible photographic memory." Ishizu answered, proving that there may be a connection between the Duel Monsters tablets falling in Equestria and the goings on in this world. "When you return home, my Pharaoh, you will discover an invitation waiting for you. And as for you, Miss Twilight, I believe that someone will give you a chance to do some good for the benefit of both the tournament and Domino City. All you need to is wait. Farewell to you all, especially you, King Yami." she added before leaving the room.
"I guess at one point in life, you were the ruler of Egypt, huh?" Rainbow asked. "If this guy saved the world from some sort of evil 5,000 years ago, then that makes him some kind of hero." AJ pointed out. "Yes, but I still have so many questions. Wait... the opponent opposite of the carving of me. It looks like Kaiba!" Yami said, realizing that the sorcerer look similar to his great rival. "You're right. But wouldn't that mean...?" Fluttershy began to ask. "No, I doubt Kaiba would want to destroy the world. Maybe that the guy in the tablet is related to Kaiba, like his ancient ancestor." Twilight clarified. 'Maybe, but could it be that I have to face Kaiba before I can get the chance to save the world? Well, there's only one way to find out. Whatever kind of tournament it is, I have to win it!' Yugi thought.
Meanwhile, at the KaibaCorp building, in one of the labs, Kaiba was about to test something. That being the final version of the Duel Disk. "As you requested, Mr. Kaiba, all the safeguards have been removed from the computer." said the head scientist in the control station. "Seto, you're crazy to go through with this. With the safeguards off, the shockwaves from the holograms could do actual damage to your body." Mokuba warned, trying to get his brother to reconsider. "I can't start second-guessing myself, Mokuba. Now let's do it!" Seto responded before strapping on his Duel Disk. 'Since I invented this Duel Disk system, I'll be the one to test it. I have to make sure the KaibaCorp satellite tracking system is working perfectly. It traces all the signals given by KaibaCorp Duel Disks, which will allow me to keep an eye on every duel in the tournament, and I can't afford any hitches. But more importantly, I want to test the power of my new Egyptian God card. If I'm going to use it to destroy Yugi, and reclaim my rightful title as world champion Duelist, I need to make absolutely sure it's as powerful as Ishizu claims. She may have revealed to me that I had an ancient ancestor in Egypt, but she's absolutely right about me and Yugi having to face each other again. And this time, with a deck full of rare cards and one Egyptian God monster, I will be victorious.' he thought, determined to prove to the world that he, and not Yugi, was the number one Duelist in the world.
"Duel Disk is online, activating duel robot." said one of the scientists before said robot came down from the ceiling. "We've updated the robot's hard drive with the rules for the tournament that you discussed with Industrial Illusions. Setting skill level to max. Ready to begin on your command, Mr. Kaiba." he said. "Seto, are you sure you want to go through with this?" Mokuba asked. "Keep the medics on standby, probability of injury is at 95%." said the head scientist. "Please, keep your calculations to yourself." Mokuba said. "I'm only doing my job. The robot is armed with your brother's deck from Duelist Kingdom, so the risk of injury is high." the lead scientist responded. "Wait, all three of the Blue-Eyes White Dragons are in the robot's deck?" Mokuba asked. "Right. Those were your brother's direct orders." the head scientist answered. 'Man, Seto's gonna be in major trouble if he gets attacked by one of those Blue-Eyes. I sure hope he knows what he's doing.' Mokuba thought, clearly not wanting his brother to go through with his crazy test. Soon, Seto placed his new deck in the Duel Disk, setting his life points to 4000, instigating one of the new rules for this tournament, which was every Duelist would have 4000 live points per duel instead of 2000 like at Duelist Kingdom.
'Ishizu claimed that Obelisk may be too powerful for me to control, but there's no way I'll know how strong an Egyptian God card is until I see it with my own eyes. And the best test of strength for Obelisk the Tormentor is against the might of, not one, but three of the most powerful dragons in all of Duel Monsters.' he thought. "Three on one does seem unfair, but if Egyptian God cards are as powerful as Ishizu claims, Obelisk should easily destroy them. Let's go!" he stated. "Switching on the main computer's auto-duel system." said one of the scientists. "Active." the lead scientist said. "Duel robot standing by." the other scientist added. "Engage." the lead scientist said before the robot activated. "Good luck." Mokuba said, worried. "Launching hologram projectors." said one of the scientists before, from the bottom of Seto's Duel Disk, four hologram projectors launched outward, sprouted wings, and glided into position in the four corners of the battlefield before activating.
"With my new portable projectors, there's no need for oversized dueling arenas." Seto said as the robot drew its first five cards and its life points set to 4000 while he drew his hand. "It's time to duel." he added. "Draw card. Accessing dueling database for optimal battle. Set monster card in defense mode." the robot said before setting its chosen monster. "I'll play, this card, facedown. Next I summon the mighty Battle Ox." Seto said as he made his move and the Battle Ox appeared. "Destroy that monster! Axe Slam attack!" he commanded before his monstrous bovine attacked, only to reveal that the target was a Cyber Jar. "Oh no! The Cyber Jar!" Seto said in shock. "Monster; Cyber Jar. Special Effect 1: Destroy all monsters on field." said the computer before Battle Ox was destroyed along with Cyber Jar. "Cyber Jar, special effect 2: Each player picks up five cards from deck and summons or sets any level four monsters onto field." it added before both players picked up their five cards. "Set two monsters onto field." it continued before the two facedown monsters appeared. "I summon four monsters onto my field and set one!" Seto responded as his four unset monsters appeared.
First was Maha Vailo, a level four, Light attribute spellcaster/effect monster with 1550 attack points and 1400 defense points. Next was Dark Zebra, a level four, Earth attribute beast/effect monster with 1800 attack points and 400 defense points. Followed by Boar Soldier, a level four, Earth attribute beast-warrior/effect monster with 2000 attack points and 500 defense points. And lastly was the Hitotsu-Me Giant. "What a digital dummy. The robot just gave Seto the chance to bolster his forces." Mokuba said. "Analyzing new tournament rules. Must sacrifice two monsters to summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon." said the robot as its two monsters, a level four, Water attribute Spellcaster with 1200 attack points and 2000 defense points named Aqua Madoor, and a level four, Dark attribute fiend/effect monster with 1000 attack points and 1850 defense points called Wall of Illusion, appeared before disappearing for the tribute summoning. "What?!" Seto said in shock before his signature beast of destruction appeared before him. "Now I'm in trouble." he simply said. "Turn off the machine before he gets hurt!" Mokuba shouted. "The robot already mastered the new sacrifice rule to summon the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. It may have been inspired by whatever it was that Ishizu showed me, but the robot quickly got the hang of it." Seto said, clearly impressed that a machine of his own design mastered one of the tournament rules he made.
"If it attacks me now, it'll be the beginning of the end." he added. "Opponent has card face down. End turn." the robot said. 'The duel robot didn't attack because it thinks that my facedown is a trap intended to destroy the Blue-Eyes White Dragon.' Seto thought. "Big mistake! I sacrifice Hitotsu-Me Giant to summon, Dragon Seeker in defense mode!" he declared before his giant vanished and his new monster, a level six, Dark attribute fiend/effect monster with 2000 attack points and 2100 defense points, took its place. 'The Dragon Seeker's special effect allows it to destroy one dragon instantly when it switches from defense to attack mode. On my next turn, that Blue-Eyes is history.' he thought. "Analyzing Dragon Seeker. Processing countermeasures." said the robot before it drew. "Set one card face down on field." it continued as it made its move. "Summon Lord of Dragons in attack mode." it added. "What?!" Seto said in shock, clearly not expecting for his machine to bring out the monster known either as Lord of Dragons or Lord of D., a level four, Dark attribute spellcaster/effect monster with 1200 attack and 1100 defense points. In no time, it appeared.
"Lord of Dragons special effect; protects dragons from all magic, trap and monster cards. Dragon Seeker's effect negated." the robot concluded. "If I can't destroy the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, at least I can protect myself. I switch my remaining monsters to defense mode." Seto said upon drawing before his other three creatures went on the defensive. "You can't lose, Seto, do something!" Mokuba said in worry as he watched on. "Processing battle strategy. Playing magic card, Flute of Summoning Dragon." said the robot, which worried Seto. Soon, the flute appeared and the Lord of D. took hold of and blew into it. "Magic effect, summons two dragons from hand onto field. Selecting dragons. Processing. Summon two Blue-Eyes White Dragons" it continued. "There's no way!" Seto said in shock. "Seto!" Mokuba shouted as the last two Blue-Eyes appeared. 'Three Blue-Eyes.' Seto thought. "Playing magic card, Polymerization. Fuse three Blue-Eyes into Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon." said the robot. "No!" Seto shouted, clearly more shocked that the robot was summoning his former ULTIMATE monster. In no time, the three-headed Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon appeared in all its glory.
"Analyzing tournament rule book. Fusion monster cannot attack on same turn it was created. Must end turn." said the robot. Seto looked at his three-headed beast of destruction, knowing the feeling that Yugi/Yami must've had when they first seen it, but merely smiled. "Just great." he said. "Seto!" Mokuba shouted. "I don't want to say it, but he's doomed. None of his monsters come remotely close to that dragon's attack strength." said the head scientist. "The damage from the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon's attack could be catastrophic!" said another scientist. "Say what?!" Mokuba asked. "With the safeguards disabled, the force from the shockwave of the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon's Neutron Blast could cause serious injury to Mr. Kaiba!" the scientist answered. "Seto, get out of there! Stop the duel!" Mokuba pleaded. But Seto just ignored him. 'So, this is what it's like to face fear. This must be how Yugi felt when he stared into the eyes of my Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon at Duelist Kingdom. He came close to bringing my powerful beast to its doom, but in the end, due to his conscience and morality, even Yugi couldn't defeat the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. So, if I'm to reclaim my title as world champion and cement myself as the greatest Duelist in history once again, I must beat the monster that even Yugi couldn't defeat!' he thought as he stared his beast down, determined to do what Yugi/Yami couldn't.
"Prepare to face the end! It's time for my final test! Now I'll see what an Egyptian God card can do!" he declared as he drew the one and only, Obelisk the Tormentor. "Obelisk the Tormentor, I summon you by sacrificing three of my monsters!" he added before his face down monster, a level four, Earth attribute warrior/effect monster with 1200 attack points and 1000 defense points called D.D. Warrior, along with Boar Soldier and Dragon Seeker, to summon one of the three Egyptian God Monsters, the almighty Obelisk the Tormentor. In the control room, the scientists and Mokuba were flabbergasted. "No way! That Egyptian God Monster is humongous!" Mokuba said in shock. "Obelisk the Tormentor, let's see just how powerful you are! I now offer you my two remaining monsters." Seto said as his new Egyptian God Monster took hold of Maha Vailo and Dark Zebra. "Absorb their power to increase your own!" he added before Obelisk drained them away to nothing. "I've never seen anything like this! Obelisk's attack points are climbing off the charts! Dare I say they're close to equaling if not outmatching the power of Exodia!" said one of the scientists, totally shocked at the power of an Egyptian God Monster. Suddenly, the controls started to short-circuit.
"Obelisk, attack now. Show the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon why you're known as the tormentor! Strike it down, with Fist of Fate!" Seto commanded. And with one THUNDEROUS punch, the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon was destroyed. The force of the blow was so great, not only did it drop the duel robot's life points to 0, it started to make it malfunction. "System error. System error. Power overload. Danger. Danger." the robot said before completely exploding, and sending the cards in Seto's deck from Duelist Kingdom flying. "The robot's been destroyed!" said one of the scientists. "Shut down the power source right away!" the head scientist ordered. "Obelisk the Tormentor. He defeated the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon with a single punch!" Mokuba said in total shock as Seto looked at his Egyptian God card. "Incredible. If this is the power of one Egyptian God card, with all three of them, I will become unstoppable. I will finally defeat Yugi and claim my title as world champion Duelist!" Seto said before laughing in triumph.
Meanwhile, back in Domino City, Yami and his friends from Equestria, along with Tea, were walking along. "The invitation said that the tournament would be announced tonight. Guess Ishizu really did see into the future." Fluttershy said. "And we each got a call from someone claiming to be from KaibaCorp security, saying they wanted to have a word with us." Rainbow pointed out. "I'm not sure if everything will turn out as she believe it will, but I do know this; I must enter and win this tournament to fulfill my destiny." Yami stated. "Just promise me that you'll be careful, Yami. I'm sure there's something dangerous ahead of you in this tournament." Fluttershy said. "You're right. Whoever is after the Millennium Puzzle is still out there. But you have to trust me, Fluttershy, because this deck has never let me down before. As long as Yugi and I stay connected to one another, I am confident that we can use this deck to win this tournament, unlock the mysteries of my ancient past, and realize our destiny." Yami responded as he took out his deck and looked at it.
"And you can count on our help." Twilight said, knowing that he would always have the help of his friends. Suddenly, Yami heard a psychic laughter in his head. He looked around but saw no one. "What's wrong, Yami? Is everything okay?" Fluttershy asked. "Yes, it was nothing." Yami answered. "Hey, Yugi! There you are!" shouted a voice. Everyone turned and saw nonother than Mai Valentine. "Well, well, the Harpie Queen herself, Mai Valentine." Rainbow said with a smile. "I know you all must've missed me since Duelist Kingdom." Mai suggested. "Yeah, it's sort of a shame we don't hang out more often." Rainbow said. "Well, Rarity, Fluttershy, you're both looking snazzy. Is this a double date?" Mai said, remembering full well how Fluttershy declared her love for Yugi and what Spike did to Rarity in the virtual world. "It is if you ask my Rarity." Spike said before hugging her. "I assume you've come here for the tournament?" Yami asked. "But of course. I presume you also got an invitation?" Mai responded. "Yes, I did. But it didn't say who it was from." Yami said. "And we all got a call from someone claiming to be from KaibaCorp security." AJ pointed out. "Maybe they're connected. Do you know who's hosting this tournament, Mai?" Twilight asked. "No idea. It's a mystery." Mai answered.
"So nobody knows? Making it a surprise?" Pinkie asked. "That's right. Everyone I spoke to got an anonymous invitation. But there is a buzz going around that says the host is someone with a ton of cash and an obnoxious attitude." Mai answered. "Can't be Pegasus, he sure wasn't obnoxious at all." Rainbow suggested, with a hint of sarcasm. "My guess, it's got to be Kaiba." Mai suggested. "That explains the phone calls we got today!" Twilight said in shock. 'That also explains why Ishizu told me to enter the tournament! If the events of the past are happening again, I must face Kaiba in this tournament!' Yugi thought. "Anyway, nobody knows for sure who it is that's throwing this thing." Mai stated. "I suppose we'll find out soon." Rarity suggested. "And like you said, Rainbow, it's not Pegasus." Mai pointed out. "Speaking of Pegasus, this is beginning to look like Duelist Kingdom all over again." Yami stated, confirming what Twilight, deep down, was thinking. "You can say that again, there are quite a few familiar faces in this crowd. Most of whom I'm sure we're not all too happy to see." Twilight said before they all saw two familiar faces, Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor.
"You're right. I spy Weevil "Underoos" and Rex Raptor." Rainbow pointed out. "And over there is Espa Roba, they say he uses psychic powers in his duels." Mai said, pointing Espa out. "And Mako Tsunami's here, too." Fluttershy said. "If what Mai said earlier is correct, than this tournament is going to have a one new wrinkle, that being the host." Yami suggested. And then, right on cue, up on a big screen, Kaiba's face appeared. "Well, looks like you were right, Mai. Kaiba is the host." Rainbow said. All over Domino City, Kaiba's face appeared on every screen. "Greetings, Duelists. For those of you who aren't locals, welcome to Domino City. But more importantly, welcome to my tournament." he said. "I don't know what's bigger; his ego or that melon of his on the big screen." Mai pondered. "Let's hear him out about this tournament." Yami suggested. "I see you each received your private invite to KaibaCorp's very exclusive Duel Monsters tournament, and you had enough brains and courage to show up here tonight." Kaiba continued, getting the crowd riled up.
"Being that you're all elite Duelists, I've added special rules to my tournament, just for experts. For example, you will duel using these devices called Duel Disks." he continued before the camera showed the Duel Disk that he had strapped on him. "Looks like Kaiba kept the name I suggested for his device at Duelist Kingdom." Pinkie pointed out. "Not to mention he upgraded it." Twilight added. "Another new rule that I designed for the tournament is that before each duel, both players must ante up their rarest card, and the loser of the duel forfeits their card to the winner." Kaiba continued. "Then that means I'd have to forfeit my Dark Magician?!" Yami asked in shock. "I sure hope they don't expect us to compete in this thing." Rainbow said, clearly not looking to lose her rarest cards. "That means looking one duel could ruin my deck!" Mai said. "My competition will Pegasus' Duelist Kingdom tournament look like a joke." Kaiba continued, confidently, riling up the crowd once more.
Suddenly, a helicopter came down and hovered overhead with Kaiba aboard. "Kaiba!" Yami shouted. 'I knew you'd come, Yugi. We'll see which one of us is the number one duelist and the world champion by tournament's end.' Kaiba thought. "Don't forget to register and pick up your Duel Disk at the nearest stores that carry KaibaCorp products, because exactly one week from today, my tournament, known as Battle City, begins!" he shouted. "You're on, Kaiba!" Yami declared. Soon, a KaibaCorp representative approached the girls and Spike. "Begging your pardon, but are you known as Princess Twilight, Applejack, Rainbow, Fluttershy, Pinkie, Rarity and Spike?" he asked. "We are." Twilight responded. "Good, then Mr. Kaiba's younger brother, Mokuba, has an important job for you." the representative said before pulling out a laptop that showed a video of Mokuba. "Listen carefully, Twilight, both you and your friends. My brother and I are in charge of security and rule enforcement for this tournament, but we found you to give you an important job as repayment for helping me and Seto escape the Big Five's trap." he said. "What sort of job?" Fluttershy pondered.
"This tournament is meant to attract, track down and arrest a sect of underground Duelists known as the Rare Hunters, they steal rare cards and sell them on the black market. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to search around the city and challenge these Rare Hunters to a duel, unless they challenge you first. This doesn't make you participants in the tournament, but each of you will be allowed to carry a Duel Disk. Your contact will give each of you a ring that is connected directly to KaibaCorp security. One you turn the dial under the jewels of these rings, it will transmit a signal and we'll send it directly to the Domino City police, as we made an agreement with them and with Ishizu Ishtar to use the tournament as a trap for the Rare Hunters." Mokuba explained before a picture of what a Rare Hunter would look like appears on the screen right next to him.
"This is what we assume the Rare Hunters look like. They wear dark robes like what we heard Bandit Keith was wearing the day of that warehouse fire, they'll be hard to miss because they should have the Eye of Anubis on the hood. Remember, if you challenge one of them or if one of them challenges you, turn the dial on the rings and we'll get the signal and send the police before the duel is over. You keep the rarest card your opponent or opponents may have, while the Rare Hunters get jail time. Good luck, everyone. KaibaCorp is counting on you." he concluded before the video feed cut off. "Alright, now that you have your mission, do you accept?" asked the representative. "Yes, sir. We accept." Twilight answered. "Twilight, are you sure about this?" Fluttershy asked. "Of course I am, Fluttershy. If this is for the good of Domino City and Duel Monsters as a whole, we're going to accept." Twilight responded. The others all agreed before the representative gave each of them a ring.
"The dial is underneath, turn them now to test the signal." he said. The group did so, sending the signal to the KaibaCorp satellite and down to KaibaCorp. "I have confirmation, the signals are working. Good luck, everyone. You will be rewarded for this after the tournament." the representative said before walking off. "Well, ladies, Spike, we've got a new mission...and we're going to see it through." Twilight said confidently. Meanwhile, the puppet master that controlled Bandit Keith had heard of Battle City about to take place. "Battle City, eh?" he asked. "That is correct, master. The world's most elite duelists have assembled for this tournament." said one of the hunters.
"How very convenient for us that so many of our targets are gathered together in one place. Now, my Rare Hunters, go to Domino City at once!" the puppet master said. Yes, sir!" the Hunters answered. "It's time to begin the hunt!" the puppet master declared as he held his staff/rod up with a chuckle.
