A/N This is based on Four Little Engines.
Hey, it's us, Duke and friends, Sir Handel and Peter Sam, along with Rheneas and Skarloey, telling about something that happened on our new at the time railway to Rheneas's friend Skarloey, who both are engines on this railway. Skarloey also had befriended Edward, who was being mended during this story, like Rheneas. We shall let Skarloey tell this, except I, Sir Handel, tell about my trouble with coaches.
If you visit a place that has a lake in the woods and a beautiful waterfall, then you may also find us, two little engines called Skarloey and Rheneas. Rheneas is my friend and I'm Skarloey. We know everybody and everybody knows us. There were two more engines when this story I'm telling happened: Sir Handel and Peter Sam, but their old friend Duke joined us four since. They used to be called Stuart and Falcon, bu tthey like their new names better. One day, Sir Topham Hatt sent Edward to the Works to be mended. A big surprise awaited Edward.
Edward saw me, his friend and said, "It's Skarloey. What's he doing here?"
I was pleased to see Edward. "I've been sent here for a rest," I sighed. "I was put in the shed so I could see everything and not be lonely. But I do miss Rheneas. He's going to be mended. I wish I can be mended, too, and pull coaches again."
Just then, some workmen arrived.
"We're going to take you to the Works now, Edward. Come along.". I wished I could go with him, but I had to wait until my other friend Rheneas was back before I could go be mended. I'm old, like my friends being mended in this story.
"Good-bye, Skarloey. Your railway's a lovely line."
"Oh, it is, it is! You cheered me up, Edward. Good-bye." Edward likes to help other feel happier. I've been told he's got empathy. I turn it over to Sir Handel, so he can tell about his trouble with coaches.
Hey, it's me, Sir Handel. Meanwhile, I was having trouble with some coaches. I tried to be kind, but the coaches didn't trust me. They were awkward and rude. There was worse to come. Some careless sheep strayed onto the line.
"He's bumped us!" screamed the coaches. "Let's get back at him."
They surged into me and pushed me off the rails. No one was hurt, but I limped sadly to the shed. Driver comforted me.
"No more work for you, today", said Driver. "How are we going to pull the vistors' train without an engine?". Back to Skarloey now.
"What about me, sir?" I, Skarloey was the only other engine there.
"Skarloey, can you do it?".
"I'll try," I said. I was old, but I wanted to do my duty, because I'm like that, loyal.
The coaches stood at the platform.
"I'm ashamed of you," I scolded. "You might have hurt your passengers."
The coaches quivered. I knew Sir Handel was unkind to them before, but later he told me how he tried to make things right and be kinder that day.
"We're sorry, Skarloey."
The conductor blew his whistle and the journey began. I remembered all the gates and stiles where I had to stop. The sun shone and the rails were dry.
"This is lovely," I sang. I was a happy little old engine.
Presently, the line grew steep. I felt short of steam.
"Take your time," soothed Driver.
"It'll be better downhill," I said to myself.
But it wasn't. My springs were weak and the rail joints jarred my wheels. At last, a spring gave way.
"I feel all crooked," I cried.
"We'll need a bus now for our passengers," sighed Driver.
"No!" I pleaded. "I'll get them to the station or bust.".
James was waiting at the platform. Clanging and clanking, I steamed in.
"I'll do it, I'll do it. I've done it."
James collected his passengers and respectfully puffed away. Everyone was pleased with me, but I was still worried.
"Old engines can't pull trains like the young ones can.". I wondered if I was too old to pull trains anymore.
"They can if they're mended, old faithful," smiled Driver. "And that's what's going to happen to you. You deserve it." Probably after Rheneas was back, we were thinking, Driver and me, I could be mended..
A/N How Sir Handel was comforted's open to imagination. Maybe his driver patted his buffers or stroked his face and maybe some words, dried his eyes if you imagine him sad enough to tear up and just comforting touching and words, if you imagine him not that sad. Driver canonically comforts a sad engine in the era of the show this story's from, so I include it for the sake of readers senstive to the engine. When I'm sensitive to a character, like Thomas or an OC of mine, I need to have someone comfort them when they hurt. This story in the book came after one in which Sir Handel was unpleasant to the coaches, but that episode came after in the show. Sometimes, I mish-mash show and book with a story that's been in both. Respect my Thomasverse, if you review.
