While the others were desperately searching for the card, tearing the lounge apart piece by piece, Quinn stayed true to her word and kept Logan busy. She had pulled him into her dorm, making sure to lock the door behind her as she pulled him into a kiss. He eagerly returned her gesture, never once stopping to question her sudden behavior change. They had moved from standing in the center of the room to get more comfortable on her bed. He was lying half down but had his back propped up against some pillows. She was seated on his lap as she kissed him passionately, hands cupping his cheeks while he wrapped his around her waist. When the need for air became too great, she pulled away—giggling to herself when she saw the blissful expression on his face.
"Whoa," Logan gasped, chest rising to get air back in his lungs. He needed a moment to get his thoughts in order. "You must really love me today because…whoa." There was no other way to describe it. Not that he believed he could; her lips made his brain shut off.
She tries to smile and act like everything is fine but she had never been a very good liar. "What's wrong?" He immediately noticed the change in her expression. The look of guilt that she stared at him with made his mind start reeling.
Adjusting herself on his lap, she chewed on her bottom lip. "Okay, don't be mad, but, I've kind of been distracting you."
"Distracting me? From what?" He adjusted himself to sit up better. Part of him wanted to forget she said anything and go back to kissing, but he knew from her expression that this was a matter they had to talk about.
She grimaced, "Chase and Michael took your new credit card, but now they can't find it, so they asked me to distract you while they look for it."
"My credit card?" He gives her a confused look, shaking his head as he processes her words. Pushing away from her a little bit, he saw she tried to speak, but he put a hand up, preventing her from speaking, but he made sure he had a reassuring smile on his face. Reaching down on the floor where their backpack had been half hazardous throw, he reached inside the front pocket and pulled out his wallet. "You mean this one?" Opening up the smooth black leather, he takes out the unlimited black card he had received in the mail earlier this week.
Quinn stares in shock and takes the wallet out of his hand. "Wait, if this is your wallet, then what do they have?" She remembers them showing her the very same wallet just moments ago outside the lounge. But now, here it is again in front of her.
"Probably my old one," he reached out to take his wallet to place his card back inside. "I ordered this when I saw my other was starting to get creases on the leather. It just came in today from Milan."
Now it all made sense. "But if that's your old wallet, why was there still money inside?"
Crossing his arms behind his head to get himself back into a comfortable position. "I didn't have much left inside, mostly just chump change."
Quinn tried hard not to twitch when he called $500 chump change. She really needed to teach this boy the value of a dollar. "So, are you mad?"
He cocked his head to the side. "About what?"
"About me," her voice rose an octave higher as she asked. "I lied to you and didn't tell you what was really going on." She brushed a few strands of hair out of her face and behind her ear. A nervous twitch because she didn't know what to do with herself.
Shrugging his shoulders, he gave her a relaxed smile, appearing nonchalant. "Not really, but if you're really worried, you could put your legs behind your head. That'll really help me forgive and forget." She snorted, grabbing one of her little throw pillows to whack him in the arms with it. He laughed with her, grabbing at the pillow. "Hey, is this any way to ask for forgiveness?"
"I'm being serious," she giggled; putting away the pillow, she crawled off his lap to sit beside him. "I really am sorry. I swear, I never wanted to lie, but I was worried what might happen if they didn't find the card and you would have to call your dad. You were so happy when he told you how proud he was of you and-!" He stopped her rambling by covering her mouth with his hand.
"Look, I'm not mad at you. A little hurt that you lied, sure. But I can think of a few ways you could make it up to me." He let go of her mouth to open up his arms, waggling his eyes brows as he beckoned her in. Giggling at his gesture, she happily crawled into his embrace, wrapping an arm tight around his chest with her chest resting on his shoulder. He sighed, relaxing more into the pillows and held her close. "I get why you did it. You're the only one who knows about my weird relationship with my dad, so thanks for thinking of me." He kissed the top of her head and sat there momentarily, collecting his thoughts. It sucked learning that his friends tried taking advantage of his wealth for their own purposes and that she had gone along with it. Growing up, he had become used to kids only liking him because of his dad or money. He had learned early on in life that most people care more about money than you, so you might as well flaunt what you have. He found that to be the exact opposite here at PCA. Sure, many of the students definitely only wanted him for his money, but the friend group he had now, he knew, liked him for him. Which is why learning they took his credit card really sucked. "But I am annoyed you guys hid it from me, so be warned, comeuppance will be getting dished out."
She couldn't help but laugh, thinking back to the last time he tried to dish out some comeuppance. "Thank you," she looked up at him, staring at his beautiful face.
He was confused, "What for?" Shouldn't she be upset that he wanted revenge and was a little annoyed with her?
"For telling me all that and for still trusting me," she leaned up to kiss his cheek. "I want you to be open and honest with me about your feelings. If I'm ever doing something you don't like, I want you to speak up." She knew this was his first real relationship. Before her, the longest he had ever gone out with a girl was two days tops. She knows from experience that first relationships can be hard, and you worry that saying or doing the wrong thing could be the end. She didn't want him to feel that way with her.
Feeling his heart swell, he rubbed his cheek against the top of her soft locks. "I don't think we'll have any problems with me telling you what I like and don't like." He may be changing, but he is still Logan Reese. He has no issues expressing himself when he doesn't like something. Cracking his neck, he sighed softly and stretched out his muscles. "Guess we should probably wrap things up before your roommates come back." He had already gotten wet from the rain; he did not feel like getting soaked from their stupid spray bottles.
Quinn pursued her lips together, the tip of her tongue sticking out. "Actually, they're helping the guys too, and I kind of took their keys away so they can't come back in the room."
"Well, in that case." He picked up their bodies and gently slammed them down to lie on the bed. Both laughed as he adjusted both of them until they were lying side by side and facing each other. "Hi,"
She giggled, "Hi,"
He stared at her lovingly. In the safety of her room, away from the judgmental eyes of their schoolmates, he let himself and his emotions be on full display for her. "I like being here with you like this." It was paradise to have her so close to him, lying in the comforts of her room that smelled so much like her, with her warmth only a few inches away.
She smiled, hand reaching out so that she could intertwine their fingers together. "I like having you here too."
"Any chance we could swing for a sleepover since your roommates are locked out?" He suggestively waggled his eyebrows, but no ulterior motives were behind it. He just wanted to wake up in the morning with her in his arms.
Shaking her head, she smiled. "Don't think so," as much as she wanted to wake up in his arms as well, but she didn't think her roommates would feel the same. "We should probably tell the guys you have your credit card so they can stop searching."
"No way," Logan waved her off, making sure to hold her closer when she tried to get up to call their friends. "Let them stew in their panic a bit more, besides I wanna spend more time alone with you."
If you told her last year that Logan Reese was such a big advocate for cuddles, she would have asked to study your brain. "Alright, I won't tell them just yet." This year and last year are so different. Now she loved being in his arms and eagerly returned the cuddles. "By the way, what made you buy a new wallet?" She didn't think there was anything wrong with his old one.
"Because who wants an old one that has creases in it? That just ruins the image," Suddenly, he perked up, pulled back to turn around, and grabbed his backpack. Sitting up, she tried looking over his shoulder to see what he was doing, but all she saw was him reaching inside his bag and pulling something out. Turning back around to face her, he presented her with an emerald green fabric. "I also got you this head scarf when I was checking out online, and look, it kind of has the design of that DNA model thing you like. How great am I?"
Taking the smooth fabric in her hands, she held it to her chest. "Baby, it's beautiful, but you didn't have to get me anything." She was holding her tongue back to ask how much this had to of cost. The touch of it alone told her this was pure genuine silk, and if it was coming from Milan, it had to cost him a pretty penny.
"But I like getting you things." Growing up, he never understood people who said they preferred giving Christmas presents as opposed to receiving them. Once he got with Quinn, he finally understood what those people he deemed crazy were talking about. Now whenever he shops, he looks for both himself and her. He thinks of what he can get her that will make her eyes light up the same way when one of her Quinnventions works.
She placed a hand on his bicep. "And I appreciate everything you give me, but I don't want you to feel like you have to give me stuff or that I'm only with you because of your money." She loved that he wanted to give her things, but she felt a little bad about it at the same time. There was no way she could ever reproduce the same results that he does. She did not have that kind of cash flowing in.
He smiled, putting his hand on top of hers. "Out of all the girls at PCA, I know you're not after me for my money." He knew that from day one. Having billions and the latest in entertainment didn't impress her. Anything he had, she could easily recreate on her own.
"Because you're all I need." She leaned forward to kiss him, and he sighed with contentment. Hearing those words did such things to him. The reassurance and emotion that was behind them made him feel invincible. That no matter what comes their way, so long as they are together, nothing can break them apart. Leaning into each other's touch, they fell down on the bed once more to resume kissing.
"Find that card!"
The lounge was left in utter dismay, and chaos are the four friends turned it upside down. Tables had been moved; cushions were thrown off, bean bags had been flipped so many times they were starting to deflate; shelves had been emptied out onto the floor. No corner had been left unscathed as they searched high and low. Those few who remained inside the room with the four were huddling in fear on the pool table, watching in fear as they searched wildly. Many had already been yelled at to move or were chased out.
"It's not here!" Zoey called from behind the counter where the Blix machine was; cups, lids and straws were scattered about.
Lola and Michael were moving and throwing chairs and tables around, groaning whenever it turned up empty. "Not here either."
Chase was letting out grunts and groans that were starting to sound more goat-like by the minute. "Why isn't it here?" He filled out the couch by this point, his frustration reaching its breaking point. They had searched high and low all over the room, torn apart their bedroom, and beaten down every bush in the quad, but there was still no credit card to be found.
"Uh…?" Turning their heads sharply towards the door, James stood there, looking very confused and uncomfortable. "What's going on in here?" He had received multiple messages and people banging on his door, telling him to come to the lounge and get things to calm down. He hadn't known what they meant until now, and he really wished he still didn't know.
Lola cried out, "We're looking for Logan's stupid credit card because these two idiots had to take it for their stupid fruit snacks." She stomped her foot; the aggravation she had been feeling since this whole mess started was finally starting to come out.
Michael scoffed, "You didn't think they were so stupid when you and Zoey ate the last pack." He retorted back, giving pointed looks to both girls.
Soon the four friends started yelling and arguing with each other, pointing fingers and blaming one another for the mess that had happened. "Hey!" James yelled as loud as he could, his voice echoing in the room full of destruction. "Look, I don't care whose fault it is or who is the stupidest of the bunch. You guys are all best friends, so start acting like it." He put his foot down, trying to use the same tone his parents used on him to make him feel bad about his actions and want to make up for it.
It seemed to work because all four turned to each other, giving apologetic expressions as they said sorry to one another. "James is right," Zoey said, coming from behind the counter to be right next to Chase. "We are friends, and we messed up big time."
Lola came to stand next to her roommate. "We should have told the guys to return the card instead of going along with it." The more she thought about it, the worse she felt.
"This wouldn't have happened if we didn't take Logan's credit card in the first place." Michael walked up next to Chase, running one hand down his face.
"We're bad people," Chase would kick himself if he could. What kind of friend takes another friend's money to use for their own personal gain? "We should go apologize to Logan."
"A fine idea." Dean Rivers walked in, wearing a tight smile on his face as he surveyed the surrounding next to James. He gave a low hum of disapproval before that fake smile turned into a deep frown. "But first, you are going to clean up this mess you all made, and then this weekend, report to Saturday detention." James wasn't the only one who received a call about the lounge being thrown apart. A few teachers had been passing by when they started their little escapade, and he had rushed over to see what the damage was. Anything broken or in need of repairs, their families were going to be hearing about this.
"Saturday!" Lola gasped, her voice crying out in despair.
Zoey was right there with her. "Come on, Dean Rivers, don't you think that's a little harsh." Sure, they had messed up the lounge but not enough that she thought they should get detention on a Saturday.
The older man shook his head, "I don't think so; in fact, I think the punishment fits the crime." He walked forward to stand right in front of Zoey but turned his head to look at all four of them in the eye. "Not only did you kids disrupt and tear apart this lounge, but I heard you openly admit to stealing and attempting to use a credit card from someone you say you consider a friend." He shook his head, the look of disappointment clear as day on his face. "Now, I don't know about Logan, but I know for a fact that Mr. Reese is not going to be happy when he hears about this." He was already dreading that phone call. Having to call the kid's father to tell him his son's credit card was stolen and lost by his own friends.
"Actually," James pipped in, raising his hand in the air hesitantly. He bit his lip when he saw five sets of eyes stare at him. He walked over to the wall where the TV was mounted and reached for the mini trash can that was off to the side underneath the device. Somehow it had been the only thing in the room that was left untouched. Reaching in, he pulled out a familiar-looking black credit card that had been bent in half. "I found his card in the lounge a little while ago, and when I called to tell him about it, he said that he had canceled the old one and just to throw it out."
All four friends stood there, with their mouths hanging wide open, looking absolutely dumbfounded.
"You mean to tell me all this time we have been panicking when it wasn't even the right card?" This time Michael didn't stop himself from crying out. The others didn't bother trying to stop him either because they felt like crying themselves right now too.
Dean River let out a low hum, looking rather relieved. "It seems that crime really doesn't pay," he took the folded-up credit card and threw it back in the trash. "Now clean this up until it's spotless, and I'll see you kids this Saturday." He would ensure that they would attend, or else there would be consequences.
All four friends gave each other a sad look before collapsing onto the ground in defeat.
James could only sigh and shake his head. "I know the weirdest people." He muttered to himself as he walked out of the room. No way was he getting stuck cleaning up that mess.
~X~
After Dean Rivers had given them the bad news about their weekend plans, he made sure to send another teacher in to supervise them while they cleaned up the room. The few kids who had been in the lounge ran out of the room the moment the brooms started coming out. Leaving just the four friends to get to work and return the lounge to its former glory. By the time they had finished, it had been well into the night, Quinn texted that Logan had returned to his room, so it was safe for them to come back. They had done about half of the lounge when that message came through. When they finally returned from the lounge after showering off the sweat and dirt, it was well into the early morning. Quinn rested peacefully in her bed while they practically threw themselves into their own beds from complete exhaustion.
They swore they had just shut their eyes when their alarm clocks rang out, indicating it was time for school. Classes had been torturous; the lessons seemed extra boring when running on little to no sleep. Zoey and Lola felt like they were zombies, just going through the motions. Even now, as they sat down for lunch, all they really wanted was to go back to their dorm and take a long and much-needed nap.
"Hey," Chase and Michael sat down, sounding just as tired as they were.
The two girls returned the greeting, heads nodding off as sleep was starting to take effect. Only when they noticed what the two had on did they finally wake up.
"What are you two wearing?" Zoey asked, trying hard not to laugh. She felt fully awake now as she looked at her boyfriend and good friend, wearing matching lime green suits that had multiple fruit-shaped gummy candies on them. Lola had to put her hands over her mouth to keep from bursting out laughing.
Michael didn't try to hide the embarrassment he was feeling. "This is Logan's comeuppance for us taking his card without permission."
"He said we needed to learn a lesson in not touching his things." Chase poked at his food. Somehow, Logan had conned the lunch ladies to give them both only a fruit salad. He felt both humiliated and somehow very wrong looking at the bowl of produce.
"He took all our clothes and said we can get them back after a week." Michael wanted to bang his head on the table. For a week, he was going to have to suffer looking this ridiculous. Lisa already said she was disappointed in him for his actions but that while she thought he looked cute, she would see him after he got his regular clothes back.
A chuckle escaped Lola, "So you guys are stuck dressing like this for a whole week?"
"Oh, it gets worse," Chase propped his elbow up on the table to rest his chin against his fist. "He has a different variety of colors and costume designs for us to wear this whole week."
Lola didn't stop herself from laughing this time. "You know, now I don't feel so bad about our comeuppance."
Michael raised an eyebrow, "Why, what did he make you guys do?" He bit into his apple, taking a huge chunk of it. Biting it down hard enough that it could feel the same suffering he was.
"He took away our spray bottles for the rest of the week and said we're not allowed to kick him out until it hits curfew," Zoey told them, popping a grape inside her mouth. She gave Chase a playful wink as she gestured to the grape style on his suit.
Michael threw his half-eaten apple down. "So, while we're stuck looking like a bunch of freaks,"
"You two lost your only defense against the make-out fiends and have to put up with Logan being in your room until curfew?" Chase said with a huff, shaking his head as he thought about things. "Yeah, that seems fair."
The four laughed together, the girls sharing some of their food with the boys so they wouldn't starve. Even as they grew older, they did not like eating their fruits and vegetables. Plus, they all had a pretty good idea that Logan would have the lunch ladies enforce the fruits only on them from breakfast till dinner.
"What's up, guys?" Logan approached the table, holding hands with Quinn, who gave them all an embarrassed smile.
Lola took one look at her best friend and spat out her drink at the sight. "Oh my god, what are you wearing?" She started cackling, hands holding her stomach.
Zoey nearly choked on the grape she had in her mouth when she saw her roommate's outfit. "I take it this is Logan's punishment for you?"
Sighing through her nose, Quinn looked down at herself. Her attire for the day was simple, a pair of dark denim jean shorts with her favorite wedge sandals, but it was her top that was attracting everyone's attention. She wore a black t-shirt with an image of Logan making a kissy face on the front, and on the back was a giant pink heart with the same image.
"Hey, how's everyone doing?" Vince and James walked up to the group with their lunch trays full. Vince looked at the group, noticing the girls cackling, the guys sitting with their mouths wide open wearing the most ridiculous outfits, and Quinn had Logan's face on her shirt. "Do I want to know?" He asked, pointing at each one of them.
James patted his friend and roommate's shoulder. "Trust me; I don't think we do." He patted his arm again and motioned for them to go sit at the table next to them. He figured a little distance was probably for the best right now. Less of a chance they could get caught up in whatever it was they were doing.
Shrugging his shoulders, Logan held up his conjoined hands with Quinn. "Since you guys corrupted my girlfriend, I told her if she wears this today and then to bed for the rest of the week, I'll forgive her."
Zoey scoffed, "Oh, come on! You mean we not only have to deal with you in the room all day, but now we'll be stuck seeing your face at night after you leave?"
He gave them a victorious smirk, reaching across the table to take a grape off her plate. "Have sweet dreams tonight, ladies, but remember these lips belong to Quinn, so try not to cry so much when you dream of me." He rang a finger across his lips, looking very smug before placing a chaste kiss on his girlfriend's hand.
Lola stopped laughing as waves of nausea started to settle in. She looked at the boys, who gave the girls a sympathetic look. It seems there was a bit more to their own punishment than they originally thought.
Micheal was starting to question who had a worse outfit, his and Chase, or Quinn being forced to wear Logan's face on her chest. Laughing silently to himself, he ate the rest of his apple but was interrupted by a blinding light that seemed to bounce off something. Squinting, he noticed the beam of light was coming from the glasses-wearing girl's wrist. "Quinn, you're starting to make me glow blind with what you have on your wrist."
Zoey sat up in her seat to see what he was talking about and dropped her fork at the sight. "Are those diamonds on your watch?" She gasped out.
"Just another extra accessory as part of her punishment," Logan said with a wink in his girlfriend's direction.
Reaching forward to grab her friend's wrist, Lola let out a gasp of her own. "You gave your girlfriend a diamond-encrusted zap watch as a punishment!?" To her, that sounded like the complete opposite of a punishment.
Quinn took her wrist back, feeling embarrassed that so many eyes were on her. "He said since I keep telling him not to buy me things, he's going to force me to allow him to give me stuff since I lied to him."
"Hey Logan, I've lied to you before!" Vince said from the next table over, laughing with a hot dog in his hand as he pointed at the diamond watch. "You can buy me shiny things."
"Me too!" James waved, gesturing to his empty wrist.
Logan paid them no mind and waved them off.
"Dude, your ideas of punishments are so weird." Chase shook his head, trying to wrap his mind around everything that had transpired, but it was so crazy.
He gave each of his friends a good long look. "We'll maybe this will teach you guys from trying to commit embezzlement against me."
"Word of the day calendar?" Michael asked.
Logan nodded proudly, "Yeah."
Zoey sighed in her seat, turning to face the curly-haired boy. "Logan, we're really sorry. We weren't good friends, and you didn't deserve that."
"So sorry."
"We're sorry."
"We are bad people."
He tried giving them a mean look, but their sad expression made it hard. "Look, I get it. You guys got blinded by the money. Trust me; I know how it feels." He knew better than anyone else what money can do to you. It's sort of like a double edge sword. Money can do so much good for you, but it can also do so much harm. "But, to make sure you guys never try that again, let's all enjoy your comeuppance for the rest of this week." Giving them a mock salute with two fingers, he turned to Quinn. "Come on, sweetie. Let's get some lunch."
