Chapter 40: Detective Darnell White
July 15th. Me and my friends were at Café du Pécheur for brunch.
"Charlie's been acting real quiet to us lately." Lars said to me,
"Yeah…" I said,
"Huh, you guys don't mean that–" Willow said as she was interrupted by someone in the Café,
"--Hey! That Darnell guy is gonna be on Channel 666!" One hellborn said,
"Ain't he that hellborn from Greed?" An Imp wondered,
"He is, but he's really charming!" Another Imp replied, "And he's a detective helping out in both Greed and Pride!"
We overheard the conversation.
"Huh… Darnell White…" Selene said,
"Who's he and why are people talking about him?" Lars wondered,
"Oh, someone's gonna put the news on right now!" Cattleya said, "Let's see what's up!"
The TV in the Café turned to Channel 666 where 666 News was on. Katie Killjoy was with a shark hellborn in a suit.
"Thanks for joining me on this interview, Darnell!" Katie said to him,
"Don't mention it." Darnell said, "A detective like me has to take a break every now and then."
"Now you're making the talk here in Pride plus in your home in Greed! How does it feel to be this popular?"
"Ehh, I don't really care. I'm just out doing my job."
"You don't care about your fame, huh? That's surprising!"
"Why it sure is."
"Another question, do you know about The Phantom Thieves running around here in Hell changing hearts of anyone they held a grudge for?"
"I have heard of them when they changed Overlord Vox's heart. I also found out that they changed Valentino and Velvette's hearts a while ago before Vox's. They really know how to find out what makes these scumbags the scumbags we know of today."
"Do you have anything to say to The Phantom Thieves?"
"Not really, but I have something to say to you, Katie Killjoy."
"Oh? What is it?"
"Recently I've been hearing reports of those in the LGBT getting harassed and abused by a familiar woman with blonde hair and is a news anchor. Would you know anyone with those similar features?
"Uhhh… Ha ha, what are you talking about, Darnell?!"
"Before we had this interview, you wanted to interview me for money and you viewed me as a scum of Pride only because I'm Trans."
"Now why would I say–"
Darnell then showed a recording device of Katie saying some horrible things to Darnell. Katie gasped and gulped. She then grew serious.
"You asshat…" Katie said with anger,
"But that's not all." Darnell said as he snapped his fingers,
Police arrived to put Katie in handcuffs.
"Hey! What's going on?!" She shouted,
"Katie Killjoy, we are placing you under arrest for abuse, disturbing the peace and scamming." Darnell said, "You scammed those in crisis by making a fake hotline just for money. The pieces of the puzzle are now solved. It was you that did it all!"
"YOU CUNT! UNHAND ME!"
One cop made her stop resisting by tazing her. The news then stopped airing and put on a technical difficulty screen on-air. Every one of us were shocked.
"My Satan…" Selene said, "How in the…"
"That Darnell guy is crazy…" Lars said, "He arrested that bitch on live television for all of those things?!"
Willow then saw something pop up on her phone. It was a news article on the exposure of Katie Killjoy and her arrest.
"Oh wow, it is true!" She said, "She really did all those horrible things!"
"Man…" Cattleya said, "We really gotta be careful with Darnell around… He might expose us for being The Phantom Thieves…"
July 16th. Me and Lars were working at The Hazbin Hotel until someone entered. It was Darnell White.
"Oh Satan, it's that guy." Lars said, "Detective Darnell White."
I went over to Darnell as he was talking to Charlie.
"Oh, hello there." Darnell said,
"Oh! Darnell, this is Ren!" Charlie said, "He's working with us!"
"Really? What does this hotel do?"
"It can give sinners another chance to go to heaven or something?" I wondered,
"Something like that, yeah!" Charlie replied as she laughed nervously,
"Really… Interesting." Darnell said, "I'm only a Hellborn from Greed, but I'm looking forward to the results of it. Have you gotten any customers?"
"No."
"Oh, well, that's sad. Not one after Extermination Day."
"Wait, what are you here for?" I asked,
"Just coming by to talk to Charlie about Katie Killjoy. You won't have to worry about her or anyone talking smack about your hotel anymore, Princess."
"And I appreciate it!"
Darnell looked at me.
"We shall meet again." He said as he gave out his phone number to me, "Here."
Darnell walked away. I was a little confused.
"Well I'm going back to work." I said,
Charlie then took a deep breath.
"Darnell… Does he also know about Ren being a possible leader of The Phantom Thieves here?" She wondered, "We gotta get to the bottom of this…"
