Mortal Kombat; A Second Chance

~Chapter 20 Oncoming Storm~

Sub-zero sat up from the bed he had been resting on, Raiden had come to him and offered him a place to rest and recover.

'Sektor has more forces then I expected' he thought 'he has to be forcing outside individuals through the cyber initiative' he clenched his fist in frustration.

"Greetings Sub-zero"

Looking up from his hands he saw the thunder god in question, the cryomancer nodded, acknowledging the god's presence.

"I know you are set on facing the Lin Kuei" he started "however I think you are foolish to face them alone"

"I was underprepared for the forces that Sektor has created" Sub-zero replied "I find it unlikely that he has cyberized only the Lin Kuei"

"Do you know why I have only contacted you now?" Raiden asked, only for Sub-zero to shake his head "Sonya blade asked me about your location, she wanted to know where allies can be found" he watched the mortal's reaction carefully "I tell you this because, fighting alone increases the odds of your failure"

"I assume you wish for me to head to the Special Forces?" Sub-zero asked with a raised eyebrow.

"That is correct" he answered "I will take you there, once your wounds have healed"

Sonya sat back in her chair, rubbing her temples in an attempt to hold off the headache that she knew would be coming.

"My doctor told me I need to avoid stress" she mumbled before looking up to address the ninja "so the Lin Kuei started turning people into robots, and then decided that just the volunteers weren't enough"

"That's correct" Sub-zero replied "from what I have gathered people are being taken from remote locations" he clenched his fists, a small amount of frost gathering up by his foot "I believe Sektor is building an army"

"This is the last thing we need" Sonya sighed "where do we start?"

"I know of a number of places the Lin Kuei would use in the past" Sub-zero answered "I can only assume that the main temple is being used as his main base of operations"

"I can probably gather a team for you to assault one of the bases, get some more concrete information" she replied "I also need to tell that, Sareena would like to talk to you"

"The demon woman?"

"That's right" she answered "apparently she knew your brother"

Sub-zero was stunned at the revelation, before nodding at the Major and taking his leave.

"I think Johnny was right to suggest I take a break" Sonya muttered.

Sareena had a feeling that today was going to be different, she couldn't explain it, but the feeling was persistent, she knew she was vindicated when the door to her room opened and it was not Mileena on the other side, but Sub-zero instead.

Almost immediately she could tell this was not Bi Han, the way he carried himself made that obvious to her, the realization causing her the slightest heartache.

"Hello there" she greeted plainly.

"I was told that you wish to speak with me"

"I wanted to know more about you and your brother" she replied "I didn't get to know Bi Han for long, but he helped me leave Quan Chi's service" she nervously rubbed her arm over the scar her sister left behind "I know that he died and was enslaved by Quan Chi"

"He is gone for good now" Kuai Liang said quietly "he was twisted into a dark reflection of himself and I was forced to kill him during Earthrealm's invasion"

"My sympathies" Sareena replied "I know what it's like to be forced to kill a sibling" when the cryomancer looked at her, she gesture to the chair near her bed, only continuing when he sat down "I was apart of the assault team that attacked the Quan Chi's fortress in the Netherrealm, my sisters confronted me, they stayed loyal to Quan Chi…"

Kuai Liang was able to understand the rest of story "you have my sympathies as well" he said quietly "it is an unequalled pain, despite everything I still cared about my brother"

The two of them sat in silence for a few minutes before Sareena looked up "can you tell me more about him?" she asked genuinely.

"Why do I have to go there?!" Mileena questioned clearly upset "they'll make me take off my mask, and look at my teeth"

"Mileena I don't do this lightly, but you have been saying about toothache for the past week" Lewis replied softly "and I trust this dentist, we can keep this secret between the three of us"

Mileena sat back in her seat grumbling under her breath "I can handle a little pain" she muttered load enough to be heard.

"But I don't want you to have to" Lewis said firmly "we're here to help you, so do you trust me?"

"Yes I do" Mileena answered with no hesitation "I trust you"

Sonya sat at a desk sorting through paperwork, trying to set up a team that could assist Sub-zero on his mission, Sareena would likely want to help as some form of gratitude, Mileena would likely sign up the moment she heard about it, Jade and Ashrah were complete unknowns until asked, Kenshi had left the special forces for now, Scorpion was visiting his ancestor's home and Jax was in therapy with little sign of returning to active duty.

As she rubbed her temples to try and push away the headache building, just as she released a monumental sigh the phone began ringing, she answered it with a rather annoyed "Hello?"

"Wow, that's a nice greeting" said the man on the other end.

"Sorry Johnny, it's just…" Sonya apologized "what are you calling for?"

"I was just checking in, it sounds like you're not avoiding stress like the doctor said to" he replied "you say the word and I'll ditch this movie and be there to help"

"No, you don't have to do that" said Sonya "I'm organizing a team for Sub-zero because it seems like the Lin Kuei are kidnapping people for cyberization"

"Geez, what is it with bad guys and slave armies?" Johnny asked rhetorically "my offer still stands"

"You already know my answer" said Sonya firmly "just focus on playing some action hero or whatever"

"I wish that's what this movie was" Johnny sighed "I'm playing a character named 'Cole Young' and spend like 90% of this movie getting the crap kicked out of me"

"In that case I might have to watch it myself" she laughed "if it's that bad, why are still there?"

"The money is too good to pass up, especially with… you know" he answered.

"Yeah… we'll face this together Johnny" she said softly "thanks for calling Johnny, but I need to get back to work"

"Alright, when I'm done here for the day I'll come by" he said "I'm gonna do right by you"

"I know you will" she replied before hanging up the phone, she sat back in her chair taking a moment to decompress before going back to work.

~A/N~ Eno-on: So is the next chapter a base assault?

No-one: Yep, Sub-zero need to have a team put together first, Ashrah and Jade are up to the readers.
