This is a one-shot I wrote just to celebrate the 99th birthday of James Buchanan Barnes.

The Winter Soldier had to save him . . . but why? This man was a target, not a friend . . . but he couldn't let him die.

The Winter Soldier makes a mistake by going after the Black Widow instead of finishing off Steve Rogers. By doing so, it's a cat and mouse game, frustrating the Winter Soldier, and eventually making him wonder who he really is in the end. This story take place when Steve and Natasha battle the Winter Soldier on the highway in CA2.

Just a short tidbit I experimented with a while back.

Set post CA:TWS, taking some liberties with the timeline and details of events in the Marvel universe. I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I'd always been wanting to post it; so here it is...dedicated to Shadows of a Dream, because her writing was a huge part of what inspired me to write my Captain America fics.
