ONE SHOT
...
USS Enterprise - 2254
Yeoman J.M. Colt hadn't been feeling the best as of late. She was a Starfleet enlisted crewman who formerly served in the operations division before now serving as the personal Yeoman to her Captain, Christopher Pike after the death of her predecessor in a fight on Rigel VII. She couldn't afford to fall ill when there was still work to be done. She just couldn't. But on the orders of her captain, she was to see Dr. Boyce.
The reason for her visit to see the good doctor was as simple as it was embarrassing... she'd vomited on the bridge. She was there to merely drop off some important news for the captain and after delivering it she felt queasy. A thin layer of sweat formed on her brow and her superior asked if she was alright before she turned away just in the nick of time and spewed chunks all over the floor.
That's what earned her a trip to the ship's doctor and why she was currently lying down on a table while he looked over her vitals. A small part of her was nervous that something may be seriously wrong with her while another told her she was just being paranoid and that there was nothing to worry about. Hopefully it was the latter and not the former. The monitor beeped and Dr. Boyce rose from his chair.
"Alright, you can sit up now Yeoman." He spoke softly, and Colt did precisely that. She looked to see him giving her a kind smile as he held his arms behind his back. She and the rest of the crew loved the good doctor as he was easy to talk to and genuinely cared about the people on the ship and under his care. He could even get the captain to loosen up when he was really stressed.
"So, what's the verdict doctor." She asked. "Nothing serious I hope."
"You're not dying so I guess you're all right." He joked, which earned him a small laugh. He did grow a little more serious afterward and adopted a more professional expression that made her wary. "But in all seriousness, you may not be dying but there is something going on."
That didn't sound good to the Yeoman at all. "It's nothing serious though, right?"
"Well, that depends." He continued after a brief moment of silence. "Might a pose a few questions of my own?"
"Sure." She may be wary now, but Colt didn't see the harm in letting Dr. Boyce ask her a few questions.
The medical professional nodded. "Tell me, have you been experiencing frequent urination by any chance?"
Colt was taken aback by the question. Had she been experiencing frequent urination? Yes, but why did he have to ask her that and with a straight face no less. "Yes."
Have you also felt a change in appetite or sensitivity to certain smells?" He prodded.
Had she felt a change in her appetite? Yes, yes, she did. Lately all she wanted was a cheeseburger and some onion rings. Maybe a tall chocolate shake to wash it all down with. She normally didn't eat food like that but as of late she just wanted to stuff her face with what was essentially fast food. As for being sensitive to smells, the gym reeked of sweat and death. Just going in there when everyone else was working out made her nose burn and her eyes water.
"Yes, and yes." She answered truthfully.
"I don't need to ask about nausea since I already received word about what happened on the bridge." Boyce half-smiled as the Yeoman let her face rest in her hands. Right in that moment all she wanted to do was disappear. The good doctor couldn't help but feel for the youthful redhead. No doubt word about what happened will spread like wildfire around the ship before she left the sickbay. He asked her a few more yes and no questions before finally confirming his suspicions. "There's no doubt about it now."
Yeoman Colt was confused now. "Doubt about what, exactly?"
"Well, there's no easy way to say it so I'm just going to rip it off fast like a band-aid. Your pregnant, Yeoman Colt." He revealed.
It was as if the entire Enterprise had come to a screeching halt. The sickbay was quiet aside from the medical equipment that Yeoman Colt could swear she could hear a pin drop. Dr. Boyce just said that she was pregnant. Her!? Pregnant!? The calm and cool mask she wore shattered, and her eyes became as wide as dinner plates.
"Could you please repeat that?" she asked. The good doctor knew why she wanted him to repeat himself and did so just as he'd done before.
"You're pregnant, Yeoman." He stated once more.
Her lips suddenly felt dry. "That's what I thought you said."
Hearing him confirm as much for the second time helped it feel a lot more real than just hearing him once. She was pregnant... what exactly did that mean for her? She was a Starfleet enlisted crewman; she couldn't be pregnant. She had a job to do aboard the Enterprise, she couldn't do that if she was maternity leave. What was she going to do? She wasn't ready to put her career on hold. She was still too young.
The doctor must've noticed her distress as she felt a calming hand on her shoulder, once she graciously accepted. "Are you sure doctor? One hundred percent?"
He hesitated for but a moment. "Yes."
He let his hand fall as the stunned young woman stood up from the table and paced towards the sickbay window. He could see the well of emotions pouring off of her as she pondered what would become of her and her future aboard the starship Enterprise. He knew it was a bad time, but per his job title he had to prod a little further. "Do you know who the father is?"
Did she know who the father was? That was question she never thought she'd hear, at least not for another decade or so if she ever decided she wanted to settle down. Yes, she knew who the father was. She'd only ever been with one person since coming aboard the USS Enterprise. "Yes."
"Just for clarification's sake. Everything that happened was consensual, correct?" Someone would hang if it wasn't.
"Yes." She admitted. "It was consensual."
That was a huge relief. "Then I need to know who the father is if it is indeed a crewman aboard this ship."
She didn't really want to say but rules and regulations existed for a reason. Colt took a deep breath. "Captain Christopher Pike."
That... was surprising to say the least. Dr. Boyce really hadn't expected that. He knew the captain could be a real charmer when he wanted to, but some light flirting was as far as it ever went with the female members of the crew. "I see. You know I have to make a report about this, correct? Especially if the captain is involved."
She finally turned to face him looking both down and resigned. "I know. But could you please hold off on that report for a little while? At least until I tell him myself?"
"Sure, I can do that." He assured her. Once the report was made there would be a hearing and all sorts of other things. "When did this all start?"
Yeoman Colt trekked her way back to the table before taking seat. "A few days after Talos IV."
She remembered that mission all too well. Her captain had been kidnapped by big heads to use as breeding stock for their planet. She also distinctly remembered being kidnapped as well along with Number One as a possible candidate for him and having her crush on him being made known, as well as her above average female drives.
"We just started talking and things progressed from there." The redhead explained. "Talking, laughing, missions, drinks. We just lost control one night and I... I didn't leave his quarters until wake-up."
Dr. Boyce nodded. "Did you do the deed any other time since then?"
"No." She answered.
"All right then." The doctor spoke calmly after this shocking revelation. "You're clear to leave. I'll hold off on my report for now and come see me again if you start experiencing anymore symptoms, understand."
"Of course." She answered back. She stood up once again and thanked Dr. Boyce before slowly making for the exit. As she did, she pondered just how exactly was she going to tell Chris what she'd learned. How would he react? Would he be happy? Sad? Angry? Would he want nothing to do with her anymore? Negative thought after negative thought plagued her mind and she had to remind herself just who her captain was. He was a beacon of light in the dark void known as space. He wouldn't hate her. He'd embrace her.
She took the elevator up and found her way into his quarters. There he was on the bed reading when he heard her approach. He smiled warmly and embraced her tightly. She felt safe in his arms and could feel the beat of his heart. She hugged him right back and melted.
The two locked eyes and shared a brief kiss.
"How'd it go with the doctor?" He asked as they sat down on his bed.
"I'm not dying if that's what you're worried about." She joked. That made him smile. She liked it when he smiled. It was just too bad he wouldn't be able to smile for much longer. "I do have something I need to tell you though."
He could tell it was serious and gently wrapped his arm around her shoulder to pull her in close. "All Right. Shoot."
There she told him the truth. She told him everything. She thought he would be upset or angry even, but instead he was just concerned for her. Whatever she wanted to do he would support her he said. Yeoman Colt could feel her eyes starting to water, though no tears fell. She wouldn't allow them to. She instead continued to hold her captain close and savored his warm embrace. Whatever happened they would face it together.
He was hers and she was his.
FIN!
Author's notes: I got this idea for a One-Shot after watching the two-part episode "The Menagerie". It's a very solid episode and it was cool to see the crew that was on the USS Enterprise before Kirk took command of it. I chose Yeoman J.M Colt instead of Number One because I felt Number One would be too obvious a romance choice for Captain Pike. Anyway I hope you all like the story and please don't grill me too bad if I got anything here wrong as I just started getting into Star Trek and I'm still in season one.
