Oops, What Did I Tell Charlie
rewrite
Chapter 1Charlie heard the stories about how people acted after getting their wisdom teeth taken out. Some videos he saw gave him a good laugh. So when Bella was told she had to get hers out he insisted on being the one to bring her. He was hoping for some good stories to tell his friends. What he did get however would change everything.
Coming out of the dentist's office Bella had walked straight into the door frame. "Sorry, I didn't see you there." She slurred as she patted the wall comfortingly.
Choking back a chuckle, Charlie thought, Ohh this is going to be good. He smiled wide as he put his arm around his daughter to guide her to the car.
Stopping at a red light on the way home, Bella spotted a woman walking a rusty-colored dog and gasped, she pushed her face against the window to get a closer look. Charlie glanced over and chuckled. "A Shiba Inu if I'm not mistaken."
"Huh," Bella blinked at him.
"The dog, it's a Shiba Inu."
"Oh," her lip trembled and she looked back at the dog with tears in her eyes. She sniffled a hitching breath as they began to pull away.
Charlie's brows knitted together. "What's wrong kiddo?"
"I miss Jake." She whimpered.
"Oh," Charlie breathed a sigh of relief. "You can visit Jacob tomorrow." He assured her. "When you're less loopy."
"No, I can't." she whined. "Edward won't let me."
"What do you mean, He won't 'let.' you."
"I mean he will stop me from going again." she announced.
"What?!" Charlie blurted in surprise. "What do you mean stop you again?!"
"You know. Like he did the last time I tried to go visit Jake. When he broke my car."
"The last time?"
"Yes, I told you. My car wouldn't start."
Thinking back, Charlie recalled the night he ungrounded his daughter. He had given her a stipulation of using her new found freedom to see some of her other friends, then revealed Jacob was going through a rough time and could really use her friendship. She quickly took his advice and left to go see the boy only to return just a few minutes later claiming car troubles. "It wouldn't start, because your boyfriend broke it?"
"Yes, he didn't want me to go."
"Why did you tell him you were going to see Jake?"
"I didn't."
"Then how did he know?"
"Alice told him."
"So you told Alice?"
"No,"
"Then, how did she know?"
"She can see the future," Bella said in a tone that indicated he should already know this. "But, she can't see the wolves." she sighed. "Lucky them."
He glanced over at his daughter. She had her forehead against the window and was tracing little swirls in the condensation left by her hot breath. "Wolves?" he asked.
"Yeah, She is completely blind when it comes to Jake and the rest of the pack."
"Alice can't see Jake? And what do you mean 'the rest of the pack'? What pack?" He asked in confusion.
"The wolf pack." she huffed an annoyed breath.
"Alright, what does Alice not being able to see Jake have to do with a wolf pack?"
"Everything, since he is a wolf." Charly could practically hear her eyes rolling.
He wasn't sure what Bella was talking about, but she seemed to think he should. Like all the dribble she was spouting should be obvious. He assumed Jake's school mascot was a wolf. That was the only thing that made any sense. This stuff about Alice seeing the future and Edward… well if it's true that he won't let her see Jake and even went as far as to vandalize her truck to stop her, then they had to have a serious talk when she was clear headed again.
Charlie decided to get as much information as he could while Bella's defenses were down. "So, does Edward stop you from seeing any of your other friends?"
"No."
"Do you think He might be jealous of Jake?"
Bella snorted a laugh. "No way."
Charlie was sure he was on the right track. He decided to take a different approach to get to the bottom of this. "Bella, how does Jake make you feel?"
"Jake, feel." She giggled. "He's so warm. His smile is so bright and happy, it makes me smile. I never have to worry about him judging me, or not being enough, being too clumsy, too weak," she snorted a breath out her nose. "Too human." before Charlie could ask what the hell that meant she continued. "I feel so comfortable around him. I could just be me, you know? He's like my own personal sun. The Sun," she laughed again, "There was this one time the sun hit him just right. I accidentally told him he was sort of beautiful. He could have made me feel like a fool, but he didn't. His insecurities showed through and in the end he just said, 'well sort of thanks I guess.'" her words were running together and she couldn't make the s sound but Charlie understood her perfectly.
"It sounds like you and Jake really care about each other."
"We do, He's my bestest friend. Don't tell Alice, but I love him more. But just a little bit! So we don't have to tell her. Right?"
"Right." her father agreed.
She sighed deeply. "He's mad at me though."
"Jake?"
"Aha."
"Why?"
"Because of Edward. They hate each other."
"Because of you?"
"No, that's ridiculous." She waved her hand dismissively. "It's because they're enemies."
Charlie narrowed his eyes. "Enemies?"
"Mhm, always have been, but I don't see why they have to be. I mean, can't we all just get along?" Bella nodded like she was agreeing with herself.
"Right," Charlie lifted his eyebrows. He was losing her again. Time for another change of topic. "What about your boyfriend, how do you feel about him?"
"Edward, mmm. He is like a Greek god, He reminds me of Michelangelo's David, a marble statue." her sneaky snicker turned into a snorting Belly laugh. For some reason she found herself hilarious. She finally calmed down and heaved a sigh and closed her eyes. A dreamy smile graced her lips. "He's perfect in every way."
Charlie scoffed but she didn't seem to notice. She definitely had rose-colored glasses on when it came to that boy. He shook his head. Trying to point out that her prince charming had flaws he said, "He won't let you see your best friend."
Bella nodded again. "Mhm," Then she shrugged. "He's just trying to protect me."
"Trying to protect you? From what?"
"It's silly, he thinks Jake is too dangerous."
"Dangerous! Jake?"
"I know, right!" she exclaimed. "I tried to tell him Jake would never hurt me, but he doesn't believe me."
"Why on earth would that boy think Jacob would hurt you?"
Bella just shrugged and let her head lul off to the side.
"So, even though for some odd reason your boyfriend thinks he's dangerous, you feel safe around Jake."
"Hmh." she started tracing swirls on the window again.
"Okay, how do you feel around Edward?"
"Inada-inadquate-in." Bella huffed out an annoyed sigh. "Not good enough. I will never be good enough for him."
"So to my understanding you have two boys in your life. Jake, who makes you feel comfortable, safe and happy, and Edward, whom you feel you can never measure up to, you will never be good enough for, and you are never at ease around. If I'm right and I believe from what you have communicated to me today. Why the hell are you dating Edward instead of Jake?
"Because if I chose Jake, I would grow old." The fear of aging showed in her voice.
"And Edward is so perfect, that dating him will stop you from growing old?" he was trying to point out how silly her logic was.
"Mmhmm, I will be young and beautiful forever, just like them," She said dreamily.
"Right," Charlie drew out the word. "How old is Edward?"
"Seventeen." She answered robotically.
That's still young, why did she seem to think the kid had a direct line to the fountain of youth. "When's his birthday?"
"June 20,"
Charlie thought he was seventeen last year. If he was born in June, then he was only sixteen when they started dating? Something didn't seem to add up. "He was born in 1989?"
"No," She laughed. "He was born in 1901."
Charlie slammed on the brakes. Loud car horns beeped behind them. He pulled over and turned off the car so he could look at his daughter as they talked."Did you just say he was born in 1901!"
"Yeah, geez dad, you drove like a maniac."
"Bella," Charlie breathed deeply. "If Edward was born in 1901, he would be a hundred and five years old."
"No," she pouted. "He gets to be seventeen forever."
Charlie swallowed thickly going over their whole conversation. He decided it would be best to start from the beginning. "Bella when you said Jake is a wolf you meant his school mascot was a wolf. Right?"
"No." she scoffed. "He's a wolf. As in he turns into a wolf." She rolled her eyes. At his gaping mouthed expression, she said, "You know, like ahh-woooo." She smiled, seeming so proud of herself, while Charlie still couldn't seem to pick his jaw off the floor. "You should see him. He's amazing and huge. I think he's bigger than a horse."
Charlie finally snapped his jaw closed and cleared his throat. "Let me get this straight. Jake becomes a wolf. Like he actually morphs into an animal."
"Yes, dad. He's a werewolf." Bella blinked at him like she couldn't understand why he didn't just get it.
"Oh," Okay, his daughter snapped. He nodded his head, she had lost her mind. "And Edward was born in 1901, and hasn't aged a day since he was seventeen, soo that would make him a what? A zombie?" He guessed.
"No Dad," She said with great exasperation. "He's a Vampire."
"Right." Billy put her up to this. He had to have. But then why was his stomach rolling with dread? "Does Billy know, Jake is a werewolf?" Come on kid burst out laughing and say 'we got you'. Jokes over now.
"Of course he does." she blinked at him again. "It runs in the family."
"Oh, soo Billy's a werewolf too."
"No, it skipped his generation."
"Right, right." There was no breaking her. She spoke so seriously, Charlie decided to go to; who he suspected was the mastermind of this elaborate prank, Billy himself. He expected to be laughed at for being so gullible. At least then I could stop having crazy thoughts he told himself. She was way too good at this. He was actually questioning his own sanity. Charlie started the car back up and headed straight for Billy's house. As they pulled up Jacob was on the way out the door.
"Where are you headed, son?" Charlie asked him
"Just going out with some friends," Jake said without stopping.
"Oh yeah," He was probably in on it too. The kid would be the first to brake. Smirking, Charlie snarked to the boys back. "So you're going for a run with the other werewolves?"
Jake froze, turning wide eyes on Charlie his skin paled significantly. Charlie's smirk fell from his face. Either this was for real, or these kids should really look into acting.
Resigned to the fact that this just might not be some elaborate hoax Charlie gave in to his paranoia. "I think it's time your father and I had a little chat. Don't you?"
Jake couldn't do anything but nod his head.
