Clang
The serenity of the morning in the forest was broken as the sword met whetstone. Sparks of chips of metal flew off as the steel gained a new edge.
Clang
The thicket of forest trees shielded the boy sitting under a tree with his back to the bark of a tree from the sunlight tricking from the morning sun as rays penetrated the hive of leaves and descended on the boy.
Clang
The blade was pulled to the eye level of the boy as he ran his finger over the edge of the blade, his finger flashing white as the blade tried to bite into his skin yet never leaving a mark.
Satisfied the boy stood as he pulled the blade in an upright position. The blade was a beauty, made of steel from generations ago yet the steel had an ethereal sheen to it. Its golden crossguard shared like a crown jagged at both ends shining from the trickle of sunlight hitting it from above. The blue grip and golden pommel and golden central ridge gave the sword an otherworldly beauty.
The sword of a king mayhaps, the blade of the word reflecting back two cold blue eyes of the boy holding it.
Kurokami Village, Near Atlas
"Get her", cried a voice in what seemed like a sea of people milling about in the village. Everyone eyed the man, then looked at the child he was pointing at and sighed, and went back to doing what they were doing.
"You will never catch me, Mr. Painter, this can is now the property of Enri", screamed the girl running as fast as her short legs could carry her with a large smile on her face. Everyone was looking at her, good. This painting was going to be epic.
"Get back here, Enri you devil child. When I get my hands on you..off", whatever the man was going to say was cut off as he collided with someone and fell down. The child never stopped running, laughing all the way.
The child stopped running coming across the edge of the village at a house with white paint and many drawings littered across its walls. This was it, on this canvas, she was going to paint her new masterpiece.
As the girl wiped her orange hair from her sweaty brow, two fox-like ears stood up on her head in excitement at her plan. Her white cheeks were red from the exertion, with a large grin on her round face. Topaz-like eyes shone with excitement as the thin girl went about opening the can she 'borrowed' from Mr. Painter in the village.
The girl pulled her paintbrush from her hair which was styled in a bun held together by the said tool, and her hair cascaded down to her midriff, free once again. Before the girl could dip her brush into her new can, a voice from interrupted her from behind.
"Back at it again are we, you little animal", said a boy no older than her with a sneer on his young face. With black hair and brown eyes, the boy looked at the girl with nothing but contempt. Standing beside the boy, his father who looked just like him only taller eyed the girl with nothing but coldness and hatred in his gaze.
The smile fell from Enri's face like it was never there. Her lips quivered as she shrank in on herself. She slowly turned towards the voice and lowered her gaze to the ground.
"Timmy, I .."
"Don't use my son's name, you fucking animal. Don't speak to us. No doubt back from her latest heist. What did you steal this time?", the man interrupted with a hiss as he advanced towards the child who was looking at the ground with her eyes filled with tears.
Before the man could reach her, however, the door of the white house opened, and out walked a tall, well-built man. His hair was as white as the coloring of his house, with white stubble around his face yet his dark blue eyes narrowed in at the man moving towards Enri. Although the man looked old, his presence filled the others with enough dread to stop whatever they were doing. His presence commanded attention.
"Back at it again, are we Mark? Is this the standard you want to set for your son? A vapid cunt who can't see at a child past their outer features. You truly are an embarrassment to this village" Said the old man as he moved beside the girl and softly patted her hair.
"Jacob, how dare you? Of course, you would defend this animal..", whatever Mark wanted to say further was cut short as in less than a second a gun was leveled at his head.
"Call her an animal again? Go on?" Jacob asked, with a voice no more than a whisper.
Noone moved an inch for a while with Mark looking at Jacob with fear in his eyes and yet never looking away from him. Gun still pointed at Mark's head, Jacob started speaking again.
"She stole nothing, whatever she took I will pay for it, just as I always do. Now if there is nothing else, leave before what last shred of respect I held for my late daughter vanishes and I bury a bullet in your brain", Jacob said before holstering his gun and turning himself and Enri around and walking away, softly pulling a tearful Enri towards himself.
As they walked inside his house, Jacob sat Enri on his chair and knelt before her softly wiping her tears with his rough and calloused hands.
'Enri, my child. Look at me, please?"
Enri slowly turned her eyes towards him as tears streamed down her red cheeks. Rough calloused hands wiped away her tears.
"Such precious tears are not to be wasted on morons, my Enri. The next time my idiotic grandson calls you names, give him a kick in his nuts." Jacob said with a smile and laughter bubbled out of Enri before she could stop herself.
Laughing still she threw her hands around Jacob as he slowly lifted her in his arms burying her face in his shoulders as he slowly rocked her.
"Why do they hate me, Jacob? What have I ever done to them? Timmy used to play with me, he was my friend once, and now... Why?" asked Enri as she lay he head on Jacob's shoulder.
"Forgive them, my child, they know not what to do with their pain. Pain has a strange way to warp your feelings. I should know, I have known enough pain in this long life." Jacob said as he looked away with sad eyes.
Jacob sat down in his chair and pulled Enri on his lap, softly petting her head.
"Now enough about Mark, tell me about your latest heist."
Enri's eyes sparkled with mirth and she jumped around and about explaining her heist with a large grin to the old man who was laughing at her antics. They talked for what felt like hours until Enri looked towards the forest which was visible from their home.
"Is it true what they say? The villagers?"
"And what do the villagers say, you little troll? Heard another story about a ghost in the woods, have you?" Jacob asked chuckling.
"No, they say in the woods lives a blue-eyed boy. He protects the villagers when they foray out of the village. They say he keeps the village safe from those black creatures", Enri replied moving her hands in exaggeration.
"They are called Grimm, Enri. And yes I have also heard tell of a boy living in those woods. Though I don't know if everyone speaks the truth. I have never met him."
Petulantly Enri stomped her feet, "Noone has ever talked to him, he doesn't come out of the forest. He just saves people and disappears back into the forest without answering anyone's calls"
"Well then, seems pretty clear to me that he doesn't want anyone to find him. Why the sudden interest Enri?"
"I heard Timmy and his friends speaking about the boy, they wanted to meet him. Speak to him, befriend him." Enri replied.
Moving towards the window looking over into the forest Enri asked, "Do you think if I find this boy, befriend him, then everyone will stop hating me? Do you think he will stop hating me?"
Jacob looked over the little child with furrowed brows and clenched jaws.
Slowly he turned her towards himself and hugged her to his chest, "Enri, Timmy.. he doesn't hate you.."
"He does. He does hate me. We played together all the time, he loved my paintings and then suddenly..after that day. Why can't I remember? Why don't you ever tell me?", Enri asked with a soft and muffled voice.
Jacob slowly kissed the top of her head as he responded," It's not a day worth remembering. Nothing happened that day."
"You are lying."
"Aye, I am. But today is not the day for truths, my Enri. One day I will tell you everything, until then please bear with this old fossil." Jacob replied drawing a chuckle from her.
Hugging the only family she had ever known with all her might. "I love you, gramps"
"I love you too, my beautiful Enri"
(Hours later, near sunset)
Enri knew if Jacob caught her, he would tan her hide. But she couldn't help herself. She had to see the blue-eyed boy for herself. Maybe then he would play with her again? Maybe then everyone would care for her again?
Slowly running through the forest in the evening light she traversed along the common path through the forest used by the villagers to collect wood and other necessities. Running as fast as her little feet could carry her she came across the pond.
Sparkling blue water called out to her invitingly, but before she could answer the call she was interrupted by the snapping of twigs. She immediately looked back, towards the treeline behind her.
In the dark, six pairs of glowing red eyes looked up at her.
The creatures that stepped out of the thicket shrubs were unlike anything she had ever seen. Black as the darkest of night, with bone protrusions coming out of their forearms and spines. Three looked like wolves and three like bears, and all of them had bone-white masks.
They were demonic nightmares. This is what they looked like, the Grimm.
She couldn't move, couldn't breathe. Her heart hammered in her chest. This was it. Jacob had told her time and time again to never wander into the woods and she had ignored him. She just wanted to meet the blue-eyed boy, she wanted to be his friend so she could tell Timmy about it. Then they would be friends again, then everyone would love her again.
Tears fell down her cheeks as the Grimm advanced on her, no one would miss her other than Jacob. She wept thinking of her gramps. This would kill him.
"I am sorry, gramps. I am so sorry. I love you.", she wept as she closed her eyes, shaking like a leaf as one of the creatures broke into a sprint and jumped on her.
Only for a flash of white light to shine over her and the creature fell down, dissipating into black motes of dust, decapitated.
She opened her eyes to see a tall boy standing before her, his back facing her. Standing in blue jeans and white armor coving his back and shoulders and forearms. In one hand was a white shield with two crescent moons one above another and in another hand a beautiful sword that was glowing white. A gust of wind blew his golden hair back.
Before she could even blink the boy had moved, moving with an unbelievable speed that she could barely track, the boy charged towards the Grimm.
Dodging a swipe from a wolf-like Grimm, the boy's arm moved as a blur as he swung his sword and cleaved right through the neck of his attacker. Not even a second later the boy jumped far higher than humanly possible as he somersaulted through the air and cleaving two more creatures from the middle as he landed behind the now-dead Grimm.
One of the bear-like Grimms charged towards the boy but the other moved towards the girl.
Enri turned sideways and started to run away only to trip up and fall. With widening eyes, she saw the bear-like Grimm towing over her, opening its jaws to kill her, only for a glowing sword to come through the back of its head through its open maw.
The creature disappeared in black motes. She stared up at the boy who looked at her with wild blue eyes. The moment he saw her, his brows lost their crease and his muscles lost all the tension.
With wide eyes, she exclaimed, "The blue-eyed boy."
That's all she could say before the shock of all the events caught up with her as she lost consciousness.
