Preface
Set somewhere in the Clone Wars and the Bad Batch galaxy - in the multiverse of things
Canon? What Canon? Never heard of it! Timeline? What timeline?
Crosshair loves the hover cars. Most likely as much as Tech does. And going fast? But of course! And when in trouble, left without a ride? Leave it to Crosshair to find and hot-wire one!
A comical short ficlet inspired by a fan-art pic I saw on Tumblr. Contains poor attempts of humour.
Part of Tales in the Bad Batch Universe of Things (one shots)
SNAFU? More like we need to get the Sith outta here!
'Sometimes one needs to be somewhat reckless to survive. Or then just for the heck of it!'
"We're pinned down! There is really nowhere to hide! We can't get out or stay here!"
Hunter's tone was clipped. With him were Echo, Tech and Wrecker. The four of them having been collecting intel while Crosshair had been their lookout, watching their backs. Alas things had gone wrong out of the blue for the four of them. And suddenly, Crosshair was getting panic filled comms from his Sergeant. Well, urgent calls.
"We're out of sight for the moment but that might change soon. There is only one egress for us to take but the hostiles have it covered. We need help! Now Cross! Hurry!"
Crosshair had pretty much witnessed the happening from his hideout. But having been unable to do anything about it as per Hunter's orders. The distance he was away from them did not help either with all the civilians on the streets strolling about without a care. Harming them not an option by random shooting. Shooting at the enemy soldiers would not only be giving away his position but Crosshair was still outnumbered by a lot and despite his sharpshooting skills he would not last long. The scenario leading to a giant disaster no matter how he looked at it.
And so, getting the permission from Hunter now to act, even if Crosshair would have most likely acted without the permission, saving his teammates being a no brainer. Crosshair was quickly thinking on his feet. Checking his options in the near vicinity while looking for anything and everything to aid him on this rescue efforts.
It did take some scanning for sure, but his hawk vision finally landed on something he could totally use. And so, a plan was formed in his mind. After all, Crosshair needed to act swiftly as time was of the essence. "Roger that Hunt! Be there in a jiffy!"
Crosshair quickly made his way down the ladder on top of the tall building having kept watch there while his team had made into the building on the side of the busy streets of the main drive of the city. With the target was in his sights, having spotted it from the heights Crosshair was on the mov. After all, this, was the perfect option for his rescue plan to succeed.
Getting down onto the ground, Crosshair moved in the shadows, hiding in plane sight only hoping the enemy soldiers would not be able to detect him. His cloak with the wide hat on top of his armour acting as a sort of a disguise. They all had one. After all, this was the city and clone troopers were pretty distinguishable in their armour.
It took mere moments for the feline like sniper to hop, jump and skip to where he found the target. The one single thing Crosshair needed for his plan to work. Standing there as if waiting for him to just come and pick up on the side of the street. Calling to him, his name!
Crosshair was there in no time. Checking his surroundings once again and then going to work. Picking the lock of the door was easy enough. Getting inside and finding the ignition was rather easy too despite the somewhat of an older make of a model. Crosshair's lips curled into a smirk.
Hot-wiring the vehicle he was about to annex.
"Easy, as mudpie!"
Committing a felony for sure, but extreme measures during desperate times and all that. The engines soon purred to life in Crosshair's able hands, literally. The sniper having connected the wires inside the ignition box with his long fingers reaching them just perfectly. It wasn't the first time Crosshair had done something like this and it would not be his last either. Stealing a car was loads of fun after all! Then sniper having been rather notorious in his past, taking off in other people's cars. Getting to trouble, sometimes. Even if he had mostly returned said vehicles after a joyride.
But today, the need was clear. This was a rescue mission after all. And so, Crosshair was off to the races!
The engine purring nicely, Crosshair was manoeuvring the vehicle the short distance towards his destination, Crosshair was flying through the air of the motor lane with the pedal to the metal, gaining more and more speed his intentions quite clear.
As it was all dependent on timing. With the time running short for the Batchers and the getaway needed to happen swiftly and with a surprise as well. Hopefully, alerting the enemy only after the fact. Then again, there were a lot of them there, standing by the doorway, so guess detection was unavoidable?
With the stronghold in view, Crosshair sped up the hover car. Soon enough playing chicken with the enemy. His options? His plan? To crash through it of course! Taking down as many of the enemy soldiers as possible in the process.
The doorway in his crosshairs, Crosshair sped up the vehicle one more time. Bracing himself for the impact, the seatbelts securing him from flying over the windshield. His grip tight on the steering wheel, one final push, the engine roaring now.
It was a blurry flash of something seen by the enemy as the hover car hit the doorway with such force it had no other option except to bend to the will of the impacting car. Crosshair was seeing stars! But he was hanging on, gaining momentum once again, the sniper was inside the building. Driving through the corridor and towards his team.
They were all hiding, but the sound of the engines were unmistakable.
"Crosshair?" Wrecker voiced the question on behalf of them all.
"Crosshair." Hunter and Tech repeated in unison, seeing the shocked look on their Arc Trooper just then.
"It's gonna be alright." Hunter assured Echo. The tactics of the sniper still something Echo was learning and guess this one, was new.
"Sure." Echo wasn't as sure though. Far from sure. The speeding vehicle approaching their hideout, fast. Oh well, when in Coruscant…
Alas, there were no time for contemplation or further questions. Crosshair's getaway hover car already there. The four of them simply gawking at the somewhat banged up vehicle which was surprisingly still in tact and in working order despite the clear beating it had endured most likely in Crosshair's hands.
"What're y'all standing around there for? Don't you know a breakout when you see one!?"
The others, Echo and Hunter shaking their heads though, simply climbed into the awaiting vehicle with Crosshair was already switching gears. There really being no space to turn the car around the only option remaining being to drive it out in reverse.
"You're driving out backwards?" Echo asked totally worried eyes darting back and forth.
"Yeah. How else did you think we were going to leave?" Crosshair's tone might have been snarky alas with a hint of mirth in there. As this was the most fun the sniper had had in a while!
"Trust him! He really is that good." Hunter assured Echo once again, the Arc looking none too convinced though.
But Crosshair sped the hover car through the long hallway towards their egress so fast their enemy hardly having managed to recover from the first hit and trying to shoot at them? But, Wrecker and Hunter were already prepped and ready, their blaster fire having started before the enemy could even see them approaching let alone react properly.
Firing their stun blasts, the two managed to subdue the resistance easily enough while Crosshair had managed to get them out of the building and into the streets.
Shifting gears in one swell swoop, the hover car tilted rather dangerously. Alas managing to control the beat up car, Crosshair had the vehicle turned around in no time. Their heading as far away as possible from this place. Crosshair once again pushing the pedal to the metal, the engine screeching nastily, the car jumping, but without incident, the Batch was on its way to safety. Their getaway secured by the sniper's quick thinking for sure!
The five of them hollering and hooting as they drove way past the speed limits of the drive lanes. But they were all having so much fun. Even Echo cheering on as they drove through the busy streets, towards the setting sun like the outlaws they most likely were. Or so they liked to imagine this scene they were in.
