Ozpin was simply sitting at his desk sipping on his usual blend of coffee, and quite enjoying it. This particular batch that he ended up ensuring that he would never run out of was made in Mistral over three hundred years ago. He quite remembers the very first time he had it and since he just wasn't the same without it. He used to be a tea man himself, until he finally found this perfect blend of coffee and gave up on finding anything better. The fact that it withstood the test of time, just like himself was also something he quite found remarkable about it. He usually found that what he enjoys fades away with the never ending flow of time, so to find something that like himself will continue onwards is quite soothing.
Just like the current situation that he sees present in front of him. Summer is coming up his elevator to his office in Beacon tower. Most likely she wants another mission out to Anima in hopes of finding Raven and reuniting the broken family that she has been taking care of for the last year now. Like all silver eyed warriors before her she fights on knowing that her life expectancy in her line of work is much lower than her peers. Just like those before her she chooses to be a light shining hope down on others and brings the best in them.
Letting her into the room Ozpin lets out a slight small and greets her "Hello Miss Rose. What brings you in today?"
"Hello Ozpin… I have to tell you something.." she replied.
"Oh? What do you wish to say?" Ozpin replies quizzically.
"I… I would like to retire." Summer replied.
Ozpin nearly spits out his drink as he chokes on it. His mind begins racing why such a woman with strong convictions would want such a thing, and can only wrap his mind around one possible option. So he decides to ask her if this is the possibility.
Frowning slightly he asks "Is this because you want to help Taiyang raise Miss Xiao Long?"
To his horror Summer just shakes her head and replies "No. This is for me and me alone Ozpin. After I retire I will not be seeing Tai any longer."
Ozpin feels his mind start to go into overdrive at trying to figure out this conundrum in front of him. She wishes to retire and never see Taiyang ever again, but why? They are the closest of friends and Ozpin bets that given enough time they would even start their own family together. In fact he hopes it for the next generation of silver eyed warriors. Yet here she is giving up all she has worked for and friends that she held dear, squashing the spark of hope for all those around her. It was her that powered both Taiyang and Qrow after Raven's betrayal to their cause and subsequent departure from their lives. It was her that turned a ragtag group into one of the best that ever was in Beacon, and yet now she is running from it. What is she running from?
"Miss Rose, why do you wish to retire now?" Ozpin finally asks in a hurt tone. He never likes wearing his emotions on his sleeves, but having what feels like another betrayal from what he once thought of as the best example on huntsmen became too much for him.
"I made a mistake and I wish to atone for it." she simply replied while holding her hand on her stomach.
Ozpin looks over the woman in front of himself and starts to piece the puzzle together. He isn't just looking at one of the best huntresses from Beacon, but a young mother to be. The sight brings a warm smile back to his face. Then the thought crosses his mind of who the father might be, according to his research Summer was closest to Taiyang. Yet by all accounts they have never crossed that bridge. Taiyang being too caught up on Raven and Summer wanting to help both her old teammates and closest friends.
"Who's the father, Miss Rose?" Ozpin asks out as he brings his fists up to cover his mouth. He wants to make sure that she sees little to no reaction out of him when she bears the truth. Any reaction could have a horrible possible consequence and drive her more away.
"It's… It's Tai. We drank too much and I took advantage of him." Summer replies with tears slightly forming on the edges of her eyes. The look of guilt hiding behind her eyes tells Ozpin that this is what she truly feels. She feels that she has destroyed their household and betrayed her old team and only friends. Ozpin was lucky that he hid his mouth as he felt pity towards her and it easily showed in his quivering lips. Summer herself was a bastard child and she knows the pain that something like this brings to a household.
"What are you planning on doing?" Ozpin breathes out as he tries to hone his mask on neutrality once again.
"I am going to live out in a small village and raise my child alone. Most small villages need anyone that is even remotely trained, and with my skills they will easily accept me." Summer replies matter-of-factly.
Ozpin nods his head in agreement. This is quite true as most villages would even accept an ex bandit if it meant another person to fight off the Grimm or the other threats of the frontier. Though he does not like the fact that the last known silver eyed warrior was going into seclusion, especially in a place where everyday was a blessing. If he was quite honest he would rather just house the growing family in his academy for their protection. Yet he knows that once this woman has made up her mind there is no going back, he has learned that enough throughout her time at Beacon.
"Are you going to tell Taiyang and Qrow?" Ozpin asks as he breathes out through his hands, allowing his aura to warm them.
"No. I know that once they find out they would try everything for me to stay with Tai and raise the children together." Summer replied sadly.
"Which I think is the correct decision. Raising a family alone is quite difficult, Miss Rose. Especially in a village, away from most necessities and knowledge for the child." Ozpin chimes in.
"I know Ozpin, but I don't want to repeat what my parents had done as well. I wish for my child to live in a home with only warmth." Summer replies as tears start rolling down her face. "I know Tai would be there for her but that would be wrong to Yang. Those outside the home would talk about it and eventually it would cause a rift between the children that can't be repaired."
"Miss Rose, I understand what happened to you. But times have changed and the Patch is a very accepting place. I have no doubt that they would accept you with open arms there." Ozpin warmly states.
"I know times have changed, but this is something that doesn't change Ozpin. It would be one thing if Raven had died, but she isn't. What happens if she returns after a few years of being gone and sees her husband and best friend had moved on without her?" Summer retorts with her lips quivering. She is unable to look Ozpin in the eyes anymore and darts them anywhere else in the room.
Ozpin sighs "You won't change your mind will you?"
With a faint smile that just adds to the pity that Ozpin feels towards her she says "Nope" with a pop on the p.
Nine Years Later
The little girl wrestled to open the door to her mother's cabin and after finally seceding was greeted by the bright warmth of the sun that lay beyond. She barely stood halfway up the door frame that she was currently standing in as she let the warmth rush over her. Her red hair shines in the light, allowing the lighter tips to radiate just like the fall leaves of the trees in the distance. The darker red that borderlines black higher up even shows its red hue stronger with the help of the sun, as if it is showing the girl that it wants to help bring out all her best qualities. Qualities that remind her so much of her extremely amazing mother. Such as the glowing silver eyes that she looks out onto the world with.
As she steps out of the cabin and closes the door behind her with just as much effort as she put into opening it she darts to her mothers garden. After running there as fast as any eight year old legs could go, she stops and finds her mother not there. Where could her mother be? She promised that they could work on cleaning Sundered Rose today. It was the little girl's favorite thing to do with her mother, other than baking and eating cookies with her of course! Ever since she was four she found taking apart and reassembling her mothers weapon to be one of the things she enjoys most. Especially because it helps her mother be the awesome huntress that protects everyone here in Ironforge! They work on it almost everyday, and if the little girl could have her way it should be two times a day at least!
Running into the village so she could get to the gate where her mother must be at this point the girl enters into the village. It is a small village with close to seventy houses, but most abandoned. A sign from its heyday before the creation of the CCTS and subsequent change of where to find weapons. For before the great war ended all the best warriors of the Kingdom took the journey to Ironforge to have their weapons crafted. Back then everyone wanted such legendary weapons, but as Atlas and Vacuo started to allow their works and technology to travel the world such a treacherous journey was no longer needed. Without the traffic it once had the village lost its importance and people began to leave the small village then stay within its confines.
Yet with all this history in front of the girl, she did not care. All she cared about was her mother and the nice people that were still in the village. Of course she was shy but after eight years here she had grown close to the small community cut off from the world. She happily waved to all the other villagers that gave her amusing looks as the little ball of energy shot towards the front of the village. Towards the very gate that many past adventures saw as the sign of this once great village. Towards her mother, the strong super amazing woman that protected all within after the last huntsman retired last year. Despite her mother working all alone as the sole huntress, the rest of the village still pinched in with guard shifts, as a way to ensure the mother still had time with her cute little ball of energy that she called her little Rose.
Upon reaching the gate the girl skidded to a halt on the dirt path, causing a huge cloud of dust to fly into the air. A cloud that reached to the top of the stone walls that protected everyone from the grim fate that awaited outside the walls. From the forest that seemed to stretch out in front of the village forever to the little girl, and the monsters that rested within it. As she was about to call out to her mother in her cheery voice a loud shot was heard from in front of her. It rang all throughout the village and bounced off the mountains behind it. The mountains that the village was built into for the very materials to create their legendary weapons. The girl covered her ears after the shot rang out from the sudden pain of the loud noise and left a ringing sensation within her ears. This helped as the second and third shots started to ring out shortly after the first.
With these shots the once peaceful village went into a panic, families rushing towards the old forge closest to the mountain as was planned incase of an attack. Children screamed and cried as their parents pulled them away towards the mountain, any man brave enough to defend their home and families quickly graving anything that they could possibly use as a weapon along the way. The little girl felt her knees begin to shake and bounce off one another and had tears rolling down her eyes. Yet despite all the fear that the little girl never left the spot, not because of shock but because her mother was somewhere in front of her. She was somewhere that she could not see because of the dust cloud that blocked the girl's view. She knew that her mom was the strongest huntress ever and that she needed to follow the villagers, but she couldn't just leave her mom behind. She was her only family and the little girl wouldn't leave her all alone.
Finally after a few moments that felt like ages the dust settled allowing the girl a view towards her mother. She saw her mother fighting off Beowolves, and tons of them! There had to be at least thirty! At least because that is all the young girl could count to reliably, often forgetting what came afterwards but still. She called out "Mommy!" towards her mother as she waved. The huntress in a panic killed the Beowolf in front of her and turned towards her daughter and shouted in a frantic tone "Ruby what are you doing!? You have to hide!"
The little girl started to pace her feet around, torn between listening to her mother or making sure she wasn't alone. Though that choice was taken from her in the next second as one lucky Beowolf found an opening against the distracted huntress and swiped against her back. The huntress screamed out in pain as she lurched forward, but not before turning her rifle into an ax and slicing its head off. The huntress sensed that she was vastly outnumbered and did the only thing that she could think of: protect her daughter. She darted towards the quivering girl and grabbed her under her left arm and ran towards their cabin up the mountain. By this point the rest of the village had already escaped towards the farthest reaches of the village leaving the two alone in the village as the monstrosities chased after them.
While running and holding her daughter in her other arm the huntress turned her upper body and used her weapon to shot any Beowolf foolish enough to chase after the two. This caused her daughter in her arm to scream out in pain and cover her ears, but the mother found this a much better issue than allowing such a beast to catch up with the two. After arriving at their cabin she kicked the door open and tossed her daughter inside.
"Quickly Ruby hide! I will protect you!" Ruby's mother yelled towards her daughter before slamming the door closed again. Ruby herself was still shaking from before but listened to her mother this time, she ran and hid under her bed while pulling her mothers latest gift down with her. Said gift was a bright red cloak just like her awesome mother and helped calm the girl down. She laid underneath the bed as she heard the fighting outside of her house growing in intensity as roars from both beast and her mother rang out behind that wooden door.
After felt like ages but was merely five minutes she heard her mother grunt before a thud was heard outside. She then heard the beasts run away from in front of her mother's cabin and off into the distance. That's when she heard the screams of the other villagers as the monsters came charging towards them. Ruby began quivering again and placed both hands over her ears as streams of tears rolled down her eyes. Trying her best to cover up the sounds of the attack was easier said than done, as even with her tiny hands over her ears she could hear the piercing screams and cries echo throughout the once quiet mountainside. This lasted for mere minutes, her mothers fight proving longer than the rest of the village and the girl waited for her mother to find her again. No matter what her mother was the best, no way that any mean monsters could take her down!
Before any of that could happen though loud hums of engines could be heard towering over the village. That was followed by shouts and gunshots once again as someone else that wasn't her mother was fighting the monsters now. That didn't make snes her mother was the only huntress in the village, so who else could be doing this? Whoever they were fought longer than her mother had as after twenty minutes the fighting finally died down and she heard men shouting for any survivors. Ruby continued to shake and not move, her mother told her to not talk to strangers and she didn't recognize these voices and she knew every voice in the village!
Finally the voices came from the other side of the door and startled her. "Tai come here! It's Summer!" yelled a gruff manly voice.
Soon she heard another set of feet dashing and stopping in front of the cabin "Oh Gods, what happened!?" a second manly voice shouted with what sounded like grief.
"We can't leave her here." the gruff voice said now also sharing a tone of grief.
"I know" replied the other voice as it fought back sobs.
"You can't take mommy away!" yelled Ruby as her voice cracked from all her sobbing. With that both voices stopped and after a couple of seconds she heard feet approaching the door. Ruby's shaking intensified as the unknown men came closer and closer to the door. Finally the door swung open slowly as two men stared into the cabin and eyed in on Ruby. The man on the left had black hair and sharp red eyes that had tears rolling down them. He wore a light gray dress shirt that covered the top of his black dress pants and a red tattered cloak. The other man had soft blond hair with equally soft blue eyes that also had tears rolling down them. He was wearing a brown dress shirt covered by a darker brown vest and brown cargo shorts. Despite never meeting these men before, Ruby instantly recognizes them from the many times that her mother had shown her the team of huntsmen that she used to work with.
"She had a kid.." the black haired man muttered, ultimately trailing off as he stared at her.
"Looks just like her too." replied the blonde man. They then turned and looked at each other in the eyes before slowly walking up to the bed that Ruby was hiding under.
"Hey kiddo, we have to go." says the black haired one as he kneels down and lifts a hand towards her. Still shaking, Ruby darts her eyes between the two men and violently starts shaking her head.
The blond man chuckles slightly and says "Just as shy as her too." With that he turns and starts walking towards the door once again. Ruby kept her eyes trained on him since he was moving around, but before she could react anymore a hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her out from under the bed. She screams out as the black haired man grabs her under his arm just like her mother had done. Flailing and screaming at the top of her lungs she tried to escape his grasp.
"NO! I want to be with my mommy!" Ruby screamed out as tears poured out of her eyes. They were trying to take her from her mommy! They couldn't do that, it doesn't matter if they were mommies friends! She was going to stay with mommy!
Once the man holding her stepped out of the cabin Ruby was blinded by the sun once again. This time however her eyes darted around to find her mommy and get these guys off of her. That's when her eyes caught the blonde man standing a little way off, looking down at something. Her eyes followed his gaze and she gasped as her body shuddered violently. Laying on the ground in front of her was her mommy, but now she was covered by a pool of blood. Her right arm twisted in a way it shouldn't be and her once vibrant silver eyes dull. The man holding her tried to turn and have her face another way so she couldn't see her mother anymore. She screamed out "No I want mommy! Let me see mommy!" as she continued to try to fight the man.
The black haired man shook his head and said "I'm sorry kiddo, but your mom isn't around anymore." in the same said tone before.
"Mommies right there! Let me see mommy!" Ruby cried out.
This time the blonde man replied with his voice muffled by his sobs "No she isn't anymore. Your mom is now in the sky with all the other great huntsmen of history." Ruby stopped all movement as her mind recollected something that her mommy told her. A story about how every huntsman goes into the sky to join all the other huntsmen once they pass away. Her tears start pouring out more and more as sobs start wrecking her tiny body. She brings in the red cloak that her mother gifted her closer to her chest and clings to it for dear life.
"No mommy is the toughest, she can't die!" screamed Ruby though her sobs.
"Sometimes even the toughest need to rest, kiddo." replied the black haired man in a soft mutter. After that Ruby couldn't remember much as the two men took her and her mommy towards the bullhead they used to arrive in. After it lifted off Ruby looked down into the village that was her entire world up until this point and saw it get smaller and smaller. The trees that were once the edge of her world turned into a sea of green, the only other color contrasting the mountains behind her village was the ocean that lay behind them.
Ozpin waited as Taiyang finished his story about how he and Qrow received a distress call from the once historic village that lay on the other side of the island of Patch and found almost all the villagers slaughtered. Including Summer Rose, the huntress that retired from his inner circle to start her family all those years ago. Yet another mistake to add to his long list of them, allowing her to go to any village was such a mistake. He knew that silver eyed warriors found an early death and he knew that she wouldn't use her gift in hopes to protect her child. Now said child was the only survivor of that village, because her mother had given her life to protect her to the end. Even gave the lives of everyone in that village to ensure her daughters safety.
Ozpin sighed "Do you have anything else to say?"
"Yes. Did you know that Summer had a kid?" Taiyang replied with.
"Yes I did know." Ozpin stated as he slowly closed his eyes. He was not going to like this conversation that was about to happen.
"Why didn't you tell us!?" Taiyang violently spat.
"Because she told me not to tell anyone about her child, or the reason for her early retirement." Ozpin calmly replied, still not willing to open his eyes. He knew this was nowhere near the breaking point of the conversation yet he still did not want to be having it.
"So you just listened to her!? Then why didn't you stop us from searching for her!? She was so close and yet we didn't know!" Taiyang fumed at the once mighty wizard. "Do you also know who her father is!?"
'That's the hardest part of this conversation' thought Ozpin as he rubbed his temples. How was he going to break this to Taiyang, without destroying the poor man? He already had his wife leave him, now he finds one of his closest friends dead and finds out her daughter is also his own. All something that Ozpin knew, but kept secret from him for nine years. With a heavy sigh Ozpin finally replies "Yes I did. You know better than most that once she decided something there was no changing it. Also I allowed you two to search for her because I didn't even know where she went. I had also hoped that you two could convince her where I had no success. Finally yes I know who the father is. She told me right before she retired."
"Then who is it!?" Tai replied with venom in his voice.
"The father is you." Ozpin calmly stated as he opened his eyes and stared at the blond man.
Visibly Taiyang paled at Ozpin's last sentence and started to shake. No matter what the man was expecting this was definitely not the answer that he wanted. Ozpin knew that, but this was the only way to keep the ball moving forward. Ozpin needed the girl protected in order to keep the silver eyed warriors around. The girl may not be willing to fight with all that she has witnessed, but as long as she has offspring that does not mean that there won't be future generations of silver eyed warriors. She needs to be protected from those that wish to see the silver eyes gone from Remnant and the best people to protect her now are her father and the closest thing to an Uncle that she has. Plus with a half sister around too maybe she could heal from the damage done this very day.
