Sophie's POV
Sophie walked into the doors of Havenfield, one thought in mind, "What am I going to tell Edaline?"
When she saw Edaline sitting on the couch she forced a smile for her adoptive mother's sake, hoping it looked realistic.
"Hey sweetheart, how was it?"
"Good," Sophie said, even though it was anything but fine. She had just started a war with the Neverseen, not that she felt entirely guilty, if they wanted to start winning then they were going to have to make reckless moves. But then she noticed, "Where's Grady?"
"I think he's in your room," Edaline replied, leaving Sophie to go see him.
She walked to the third floor only to see Grady looking into her room. When he heard her he spun around and gave her a fake smile.
"Hey kiddo," he said.
"Hey, is everything alright?"
"Yeah, of course, you sure you don't want to have dinner before getting ready for bed?"
Was he fidgeting, what was he so nervous about? Was he blocking her from looking into her room? What was going on?
"No, I think I'm fine," she said, desperate to see what he was hiding.
A very grim look crossed his face but was quickly replaced with a weak smile before he descended the stairs.
She rushed into her room and closed the door, the first thing she saw was Iggy's cage on her bed. When she saw the new colors on Iggy she noticed it wasn't Dex's style. Usually, he did one color, this time it was full of colors, there were even tiny black tiger stripes streaked across his body. She walked over to pet the little imp's cheek but then saw a letter by his cage, it had her name on it in Keefe's handwriting. She smiled as she realized that Keefe had dyed Iggy, but what was the letter for? She picked it up and opened it curious to see what was inside.
To the Mysterious Miss F!
Ugh—I'm already regretting starting this letter this way. But I don't have any extra paper, and crossing it out would make it look worse, so… I guess we'll just have to add it to my long list of mistakes.
Sophie's eyebrows scrunched together, she was starting to get worried about where this letter was going. She continued reading the letter, hoping he would prove her wrong.
And I know you're going to think that everything I'm about to say should also be in that long list of Keefe Fails. But I swear—that's NOT what this is, I'm not trying to fix everything or save anyone this time. I'm just trying to make sure I don't hurt anyone.
I can't tell you more than that without putting you in danger, so just… trust me when I say the powers my mom gave me are super bad. There seriously aren't strong enough words to explain how horrible they are. And I CAN'T control them—just like I can't stop my mom from forcing me to use them.
At this point, Sophie's legs started to shake and tears started clinging to her lashes. She knew she should sit down because there was no way this would end well, but she continued to stand, thinking that sitting and not taking the full blow would be betraying Keefe somehow. She took a deep breath, forced the tears down, and continued to read.
So… this is the only way. I don't want to do it. But I have to.
And I'm not going to ask you not to hate me. In fact, it might be better if you do, because I need you to PROMISE that you won't try to find me. My mom will be waiting for you to track me down—and since I know how stubborn you are, I want to make sure you understand who you'd be putting in danger.
She couldn't control the tears now, they were spilling. She didn't know why she felt as if her heart was being crushed just because of Keefe's letter, he hadn't gotten to the point yet, but still, she felt like the world was ending.
I'm going to be hiding the same way the Black Swan hid you.
That's why you have to stay away. Well, there are lots of reasons. So again, please, just trust me, okay?
And since this is the last time I'll ever talk to you, I just… I want to say that I'm really going to miss you. You mean a lot to me, Foster. More than you'll ever know.
Please be careful. Please be happy. And PLEASE forget all about me.
It'll be better for everyone that way. You'll see.
Love,
Keefe"
Sophie's legs collapsed from under her and she hit the ground with a loud thud. She buried her head in her hands and began sobbing. Keefe was gone, he was gone. She couldn't believe it. "Love, Keefe" were the last words he ever said to her.
All of a sudden Grady, Edaline, and Sandor burst into her room, they must have heard her fall.
"Ms. Foster, what's wrong?" he asked, clearly noticing how distraught she was.
She struggled around her words, "Kk-Keefe," she burst into tears again and Grady and Edaline rushed to her side and wrapped her in a hug. She continued, "K-Keefe's gone." Sophie hid her head in her hands again, not wanting to see their reactions. Even with her eyes closed, she knew their faces were probably full of shock.
…
Hi, so I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Sorry it was a little short, and also sorry in advance for all the cliffhangers that are going to happen. (I have a very evil one in my mind at this moment… :)) But aside from all the evil, thank you so much for reading this story. I am going to try to write the next chapter as quickly as possible. I don't have a schedule yet but I am working on one.
