Jamie felt drained. He felt he needed to have a talk with Danny. Especially after a day like today. He didn't want to burden Eddie with what he'd seen. She had enough to deal with right now. Knocking the front door to his brother's house, Jamie waited. He didn't mind because it was now Spring and he didn't have to worry about being cold. The front door opened, and Danny appeared from behind it.
"Hey kid. Something on your mind? It's almost 10 at night. Come in."
Jamie came into the house and Danny shut the door. Going over to the couch he had a seat.
"Danny, I don't know where to start…"
Danny had two bottles of beer in his hand, one was open, and the other wasn't.
"Have a beer kid and take a load off."
Jamie shook his head no and leaned against the couch.
"I drove here. Otherwise, I'd take you up on your offer."
Danny took a huge swig of his beer and then spoke.
"Ok kid, spill. What was so pressing that you came to my door at 10 o'clock at night."
Jamie felt his shoulders slump.
"I ended up responding to a call today, a domestic between husband and wife, the wife was very sick and I um… I couldn't help but think of Eddie. She was so pale and thin, and the husband had completely lost his mind. When I pulled up, he was berating her. He had his fist raised above his head ready to strike. It took three of us to get control of him and in cuffs. I don't know why I'm letting that one call bother me so much, I just, the last year has had too many ups and downs… Eddie's been through too much…"
Danny took another long swig of his beer and then added his own thoughts.
"Eddie has gone through things most people in their lives never have to go through. She's 30 years old for crying out loud!"
Jamie shook his head. His mind wandered to Eddie. His beautiful wife who was struggling to take everything in stride.
"I find myself struggling sometimes just keeping track of her 48 different medications she's on. I can't remember which medication it is, but one of them makes her forgetful and becomes confused sometimes. Right before she got sick, we were trying to start planning for a baby."
Danny put his hand up and shook his head.
"I don't need the details of your love life kid. Besides, once she gets that new kidney, she's not going to be able to keep her hands off you. You two are going to have a beautiful baby girl."
Jamie looked at Danny sideways.
"You think we're going to have a girl too? You secretly still want a daughter, don't you?"
Danny gave Jamie a look.
"Eh once upon a time. I spoiled Nicky didn't I?"
Jamie smirked and shook his head.
"I think I spoiled her more…"
Danny shook his head.
"You were the one that gave her the biggest presents."
Jamie pretended to puff out his chest.
"Only because I'm her favorite uncle."
Danny let out a sarcastic laugh.
"You're her favorite? I didn't notice…"
Jamie gave a small laugh but then frowned.
"I guess I'm just trying to process what Eddie's going through. She's frustrated and I feel like I can't do anything to make her more comfortable and happier. There are other things she wants but some of those are off the table right now. I guess I'm just as frustrated as she is."
Danny sighed and finished off his beer.
"Kid, I can't even begin to imagine what the two of you are going through right now. My advice for you is to just be there for her."
Jamie let out a frustrated sigh.
"The look in her eyes sometimes Danny. It's different from the one's I'm used to. It's like she's asking for help, and I just feel helpless. I'm doing my best to help her out. She's getting restless and anxious. She's spending almost 9 hours a day on that machine. She's getting more tired. She's sleeping a lot more now. Her doctor said it wouldn't be too long before she'd have to stop working and be on her dialysis machine between 15 to 18 hours a day. She won't be able to leave the bedroom. So, someone will have to stay with her. I can't afford to stay home right now. I'm saving up all my time off for when she gets her kidney. The first six months after transplant are sometimes rough. She won't be able to go outside for a while."
Danny put a hand on Jamie's shoulder.
"It'll be alright kid. She'll get that kidney soon. Gut feeling. I'm sorry that none of us were a match. There is someone out there that is a match. Just haven't found them yet. Chin up kid. Send Eddie my love. Now go home to your wife. She needs you."
Jamie nodded and Danny pulled him in for a hug. The drive home was longer than Jamie thought. When he entered their apartment, Jamie was even more exhausted. Throwing his coat on the rack, he made his way to the bedroom and started to get ready for bed. Stripping down to his boxers, he climbed into bed next to Eddie and pulled her into his arms. She didn't budge. She was sleeping very hard. He placed warm kisses to the back of her neck and ran his fingers down her right side. He wanted to give her the world. Sighing, he buried his face in her hair and inhaled deeply.
"You are so strong babe. If it were me in your shoes, I don't think I'd be doing so good. You're the bravest woman I've ever known. I'm doing my best to make you as comfortable and happy as possible. Tell me what you need, and I'll do it. With the exception of some things. No matter what happens I love you baby."
Jamie hoped that everything was falling into place. Watching her sleep made him smile. He took comfort in knowing she was breathing and with him. Soon he drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the future they would embark on, and the child she would eventually carry. His child.
