Chapter 14
Bruno was trying to get Marie Little to talk in the Manhattan SVU interrogation room, but for some reason she was putting up walls. Here he'd told her that her husband could be in big trouble and instead of singing like a canary, trying to convince him that Alan was innocent, she was being obstinate and unhelpful. The younger man hoped that Fin was having better luck down the hall.
"Alan, we know your half-brother is in it up to his eyeballs. We've got DNA, some of which you share. So, when we get reports of possible fraud tied in with a rapist and murderer…" Fin gave the man a look. Alan had been looking like he was going to throw up this whole time. They'd been sitting in the second interrogation room (the scarier one in Fin's opinion) at Manhattan SVU for almost thirty minutes and the senior detective was wondering if Alan was going to pass out.
"I… don't… how do you have my DNA? I did that ancestry kit, but it didn't find any brothers," Alan said.
"You allowed your DNA to be used for law enforcement access, so that's why we have it. As for brothers, the website might not have found any, but we did. That's bad news Alan," Fin said.
"I don't know anything about fraud or about this man you're looking for," Alan told him.
"You know nothing?" Fin raised an eyebrow.
"I swear! I would never commit fraud and I certainly wouldn't help anyone who is assaulting and murdering people," Alan shook his head. Fin believed him. This guy was too much of a good person to be involved. He didn't have so much as a parking ticket and they had the forensic accountants digging through his business. No word from them yet to indicate anything was amiss.
"So why the ancestry kit?" Fin wanted to know.
"My wife thought it would be fun to discover more about my family and our history. As a family, we weren't especially close with members outside of our little nuclear group. Instead, what I got was you dragging me down here accusing me of horrible crimes. Worse still, the family history revealed someone I was looking for could be part of it too! I…" Alan heaved a sigh.
"Hang tight Alan," Fin got up from his seat and went out into the hallway. An officer was in place to guard the room so Alan wouldn't try to leave. The Sergeant found Bruno talking to Marie in the second interrogation room and he could tell that the younger man was getting frustrated.
"Good news Bruno," Fin said as he opened the door to the interrogation room.
"What kind of good news?" Bruno was surprised by the unscripted entrance but tried not to show it.
"Alan confessed. He's been committing fraud for years. Even better, he claims that the man we're looking for has been getting help from him," Fin told him.
"No wonder Marie here didn't want to say anything. Guess you were hoping that he'd keep his mouth shut. Know what though?" Bruno wanted to know.
"What?" The Sergeant asked.
"I get Marie helping Alan but a rapist and murderer? Why would she do that?" Bruno wondered.
"Don't know. Maybe she was concerned this guy would hurt her or Alan," Fin suggested.
"Well, they're both in here and he's out there…" Bruno pointed out. It was then that Marie caved.
"Alan was adopted!" She announced. Fin gave Bruno a sideways glance.
"And I'm guessing he doesn't know that…" Bruno said.
"No. I was lucky enough to intercept the results from the ancestry site before he got them. Finding out his mom lied to him… Alan couldn't handle that," Marie admitted.
"So, you don't know this person? Or have you been hiding him in your basement?" Fin wanted to know.
"We never met him. I just know his birth mother's name," Marie hung her head.
"Give us that. We have to catch this guy before he strikes again," Bruno told her. She pulled out her phone and pulled up the e-mail from the ancestry website before clicking onto the link. Marie had to login and then she showed them the name. It was time to do some research. They were almost there.
