Chapter 11: Recovering

Eddie chewed her food carefully. She struggled to swallow her bite of chicken. Jamie put a hand on her back and rubbed it.

"Eddie, are you ok? Are you choking? Can you breathe?"

Trying to swallow again, she found she couldn't. Jamie hit her back with the palm of his hand only to realize he made the piece of chicken lodge further down her throat. Getting up from his chair, he pulled Eddie up and wrapped his arms around her waist and gave her the Heimlich. The chicken became dislodged and landed on her plate. Eddie managed to regain control of her breath and wheezed out her answer.

"I don't know what happened. I've never choked on anything before."

Jamie had his own theory.

"Well, you were intubated for a month and then after you woke up you had a feeding tube in your nose. Your throat muscles aren't as strong as they used to be babe."

Eddie nodded and wiped her right hand under her nose. She gave a frustrated sigh/groan when she found blood. Jamie quickly grabbed for the tissue box and handed her a few tissues. She took the tissues and put a couple in her right nostril.

"I've been getting these on and off lately. They're just annoying is all."

Jamie gave a slight frown and picked up the dishes from the table.

"They didn't numb the back of your throat when they took the feeding tube out did they?"

Eddie shook her head.

"Not that I remember. I was just happy to have it out. I'll never complain about swallowing my pills again. Almost everything they gave me, was either given by iv or through my nose. I don't recommend it."

The couple had now moved to the couch. Jamie pulled Eddie into his arms and buried his face in her hair.

"Mmm, you smell good babe. I've missed this. You and me. I'm so happy to have you back home. You ready to go back to work on Monday?"

Eddie gave a small smile.

"Yes. I'm going a little stir crazy in this apartment babe."

Jamie gave a slight chuckle.

"I know the feeling. I remember that's how I felt when dad put my under house arrest when the Sanfino's had a hit out on my under-cover persona. It was agony."

Eddie moved her head so that their foreheads were touching.

"The agony? Really? Well, you didn't seem to mind when you had to stay in your old apartment when Price was after you."

Jamie pursed his lips for a minute and then gave a humorless chuckle.

"I was too busy actually being annoyed that you were taking over my couch, watching ESPN and eating the food you brought me."

Eddie laughed as she remembered eating the french fries she'd brought him.

"I told you; Muldoon and Sanchez were out on meal break. I thought I'd be nice and bring you something to eat. You would've wasted away without anything to eat. Where would you be without me?"
Jamie knew Eddie was only joking, but he pretended it cut him to the core.

"Ouch Eddie, that hurts."

She pulled away from him and got off the couch, making her way into the bathroom to check her nose. She sighed when she found the bleeding had finally stopped. Throwing away the tissue she washed her hands and turned the light off in the bathroom. Making her way back into the living room, she gave a Jamie a smirk.

"Where were we?"

Jamie smiled at Eddie and pulled her in for a kiss. It turned deep. There were so many things Eddie wanted to do, but she knew were off the table right now. Her hands wandered down to his chest and snaked their way under his shirt, beginning to wander. Pulling away for a moment, Jamie sucked in a breath.

"Eddie…"

In between kisses, Eddie voiced her thoughts.

"What… We both need something…"

Jamie grabbed a hold of Eddie's hands, and she hung her head.

"I understand Eddie. I know this is hard for you. But it wouldn't be fair for you."

Eddie moved closer to Jamie and curled up in his arms.

"I'm frustrated Jamie. I just want everything to be normal again. How can I feel like me if I'm like this?"

Jamie gave a sigh and ran a hand over her left arm.

"You are beautiful babe. This is a bump in the road. I have a good feeling about this year. I think a kidney will come your way before Christmas."

Eddie gave a sigh and nuzzled his neck.

"I hope your right babe. I'm starting to lose hope."

Jamie's face fell.

"Honey, don't talk like that. We have to stay positive here. Things are going to look up. You'll see. I feel it in my gut."

Monday finally came and Eddie came out of the ladies locker room to find the officers cheering for her.

"Welcome back Janko!"

Eddie felt a slight blush come to her cheeks. She waved at them slightly and went to her desk. Sanchez came over and sat on the edge of it.

"Welcome back partner. I got you some of your favorite tea, and some fresh berries. Since I know your diet is super restricted."

Bursting into a fit of laughter, Eddie gave Sanchez a smile.

"I can have a steak you know."

Shaking his head, Sanchez shook her hand.

"I know. But these are the healthy options."

Eddie poked a finger towards his chest.

"You are gonna regret that partner."

Sanchez smirked and stood up.

"Game on partner."

Eddie playfully threw a wadded-up piece of paper at him.

"You're not gonna know what hit you Sanchez…"
