What The Big People Do

"What are you doing, Didi?" Stu asked, watching as his wife sighed, staring at the corner of the their apartment.

"He'd play right there, Stu," she said with a soft smile. "Right there with a ball and blocks and a teddy bear…"

Her husband of only a year sat down beside her. "It'll happen one day, I promise."

Didi gently rubbed her swollen stomach. "Oh, he'll be such a happy baby! Giggling and laughing and making funny faces."

"I know," Stu said, leaning down and speaking to Didi's belly… and the baby within. "Tommy… we can't wait to meet you, big guy!"

"One day sweetie you won't be in here," Didi told Tommy as she sat by the incubator. She reached inside and gently ran her finger along the back of his tiny little hand. He was beginning to kick and wiggle and the nurses said that was a good sign. "You'll come home and we'll put you in your own crib and it will just be you, me and daddy. You just need to get a bit bigger." She smiled, tears in her eyes, when Tommy actually managed to turn his head towards her and grasp her finger in his hand. She could tell he wasn't scared anymore.

"Oh, such a squirmy baby!" Didi teased as she lifted Tommy up and walked him downstairs to get him a bottle. It was a little past 8pm, well past Tommy's bedtime, but he'd woken up fussy and hungry. He was clad in just a diaper, curled up in her arms, calm but still reaching out for everything. "One day Tommy you won't need me to carry you around. When you're a bit bigger you'll be moving around like mad, I just know it!" She laughed as she opened the fridge and, for whatever reason, Tommy threw his arms up and cooed in delight.

"Mommy's little racer!" Didi said as Tommy scooted about the carpet. He was sitting down, half hopping and half dragging his butt on the carpet to get around. Very close to crawling. Though she could tell from his glower he wasn't happy he couldn't get as far as he wanted. He just got tired. "When you're a bit bigger you'll be running around! Getting into such mischief!"

"He's walking, Deed! He's walking!" Stu said as Tommy, at 8 months old, toddled after Chuckie who'd come to visit.

"Look at him! Getting so big so fast!" Didi smiled.

"Oh honey," Didi said, taking the lipstick away from Tommy. But before he could fuss she gathered him up. "I know you want to play with it but you are too little." She smiled as she rocked him. "But soon you'll be bigger and be able to do so much!"

"Hey mom?"

"Hmmm?" Didi turned, looking over at Tommy.

"What ya doing?" Tommy asked, sitting down next to his mother, his son Louie in his arms.

"Oh… just remembering…"
