Chapter 12: Lucy In The Cabin
Note: Lucy will get settled in the cabin, and they will talk some. I won't spoil what will aid Lucy in slowly getting memories back. Also I will give some insight into a certain character in this chapter.
We began to enter the woods the cabin was in. I had hoped Lucy would love the cabin. If she could talk with Johanna maybe it will aid her. I looked over to her to see her fidgeting as she would glance toward me occasionally. Anthony kept his eyes in front as we went. I could tell I was obviously familiar to her, and I hoped she would slowly come to understand.
I still couldn't believe Lovett had her put in bedlam when she should have gone to a hospital or something like that. She needed to pay with her life for this. Even in this state, I wanted to give Lucy the world, she will always deserve the best. I noticed that Lucy was becoming distressed, a wild look in her eyes. "Lucy, it's ok, we're going to the cabin." She looked at me and her eyes softened again.
"I'm sorry Mr Todd, I forgot where I was. Sometimes my mind blanks out." "Will be there soon" I told her. "The longer I'm with you the more familiar you seem sir." "It will come to you I'm sure, but I won't put pressure on you to remember." "I hope you'll like the room we built for you," Anthony added.
"You are a nice young man," Lucy responded. After a while more we finally arrived at the cabin. Anthony climbed out of the carriage first. I climbed out next and helped Lucy down. The horses counted on occasion as we climbed out. Lucy looked around and at the cabin beaming.
"Such a nice place to live," she said. If only I was the man I used to be or I would agree. This vile world did not deserve her or Johanna. "Are you ready to go in?" I asked her. The three of us entered the cabin. Johanna was sitting on the couch as we entered.
She stood up as soon as we entered. She and Anthony rushed up to each other and wrapped their arms tightly around each other. "You all made it back," she said. "I will always come back to you," Anthony told her. Johanna let go of the sailor and turned to me and Lucy. "Hello" Johanna said as she walked toward Lucy.
"My name is Johanna Barker." "You were the ward of Judge Turpin," Lucy said. "I was, but Mr Todd and Anthony helped me get away from him." "He didn't treat you well did he?" Lucy asked. "He never hit me or anything like that, and he gave me nice clothes to wear, but it was like a gilded cage. He could be kind, but he wanted me to marry him.
When he realized I would rather run away with Anthony then marry him, he sent me to bedlam until I came to my senses. So Mr Todd and Anthony helped me escape as I told you." "Oh you poor girl," Lucy said. Lucy stared at Johanna for a moment. "There is something familiar about you and I can't put my finger on it." "Why don't we go to your room ma'm" Anthony said.
So the three of us headed to her room. We showed her the nightstand, the closet, and the bed. She seemed gitty like a child, happy she had a soft bed to sleep on. She was also happy as we had new clothes for her to wear so she could finally get rid of her ragged dress. "Why are you doing this all for me?" "Because you deserve better than to live on the streets" I answered.
"Thank you kind sir." "It's late, I think I'm going to head to bed," Anthony said. "Lucy, why don't you and Johanna come with me, there is something I would like to show you. I brought both ladies into my room. I grabbed the picture of my family and turned to her. I handed the picture to her.
"Who are they?" she asked. "They were my family," I said, lowering my eyes to the floor. "They are so beautiful." "They are my whole world. Living without them is meaningless and empty." "Why are they so familiar to me?"
"Why don't you keep that for now" I said. "I think I'm going to go to sleep for now," Lucy said. "Goodnight" both me and Johanna said. Johanna sighed after she left. "I hope the picture will help her." "It will take time, Johanna, but I believe if we give it to her she'll eventually put the pieces together."
(Lucy's POV.) It was really nice of Mr Todd to give me a place to stay. I haven't had clean clothes for a long time. Sometimes my mind was a fog, as I could only fear being brought back to bedlam or trying to warn them off Lovett. Something sinister was happening in that pie emporium and I knew it. I sat down on the bed and looked at the picture of Mr Todd's family.
The woman was beautiful as was her baby. What bothered me was there was something familiar about her. Did I meet this woman somewhere? The baby was also familiar to me too. Maybe tomorrow I would ask Mr Todd? Hopefully I will remember where I am when I wake up tomorrow.
Sometimes I will completely forget where I am, and scare other people, at least that was what I've been told. Tomorrow I would ask where I could clean myself and change into these new clothes. It was so nice of this man to let me stay here. He was an intense looking man, but he was also handsome, and also familiar. I sometimes dreamed of a man when I was asleep. I couldn't remember anything before being sent to bedlam outside of Mrs Lovett sending me there.
She smirked when they took me away, I saw it. She had no pity in her heart, she was the devil's wife, she was evil. I was getting quite tired now, so I felt it was time to go to sleep. I pulled the covers down and climbed into bed. Listening to the sounds of crickets outside, I eventually drifted off to sleep. (Sweeney's POV.)
I climbed into bed and tried to sleep. But as always my racing mind made it hard. I only hoped that she would eventually recover her memories. But I understood she might never return to normal. (Daniel's POV.) The boat I was sailing on was tiring.
You would think a man who used to work at Devil's Island would be ok sailing, but it always made me feel sick. At least the captain was gracious. So I was on my way to London to meet the honorable Judge Turpin. So the man I was hired to guard in his cell had escaped and made his way back to London. He was always claiming to be innocent and moaning about his family. He was whipped more than once to make him shut up about them.
The judge wanted me to explain to him how Barker had changed in there. It was a long story, but his family was a catalyst to his change. At first when other less sympathetic inmates would insult them to make him shut up, he would collapse and sob. After a few years however, any insult to them involved him becoming enraged, and he would eventually attack those who did. We had to break up more than a few fights between him and other inmates, because he claimed they insulted Lucy's honor. Soon I would arrive in London to aid the judge in his apprehension, and bring Barker to justice once again for his thievery.
Note: He'll go into the backstory more in depth soon. Next chapter will go into Lucy's nightmares and Lovett will re-enter the story flashing back to her getting herself more capable of potentially being able to kill Sweeney as well as her relationship with a certain officer. I apologize if the next chapter comes across as padding, but I know it's best to show something and not just tell it. Eventually Lucy will be able to go into what happened between her and Lovett too.
