Chapter 24: New life
Note: All right so in this chapter Daniel and his officers are searching around town. Also we'll see how this past month has been treating the barber gang. And we'll finish with Lucy having an important dream that will be the next step in her recovery arc. First Daniel, then the summary of the month and Lucy.
(Daniels POV.) I looked over at the two officers accompanying me. "All right men, we must find where Barker went. We talk to people around the docs, then we see if we can find some kind of hotel. I highly doubt they are still here, but we can't be too careful. Remember men we must find this bastard and bring him in for murdering the honorable judge Turpin.
Both Jeremy and Jason both nodded. "Yes sir," Jason said. First I called over a young man who looked a bit tired. "We are looking for a man who is wanted for murder. He should be accompanied by at least three other people, two men and one woman." "A lot of people have come here but I don't remember a two man and one woman party at all.
Though I did see a group of two men and two women." Could the barber have a bigger party than I thought? I need to know if I'm going to find the damn bastard. "Thank you young man." We talked to people for about an hour on the doc. We kept having it repeated to us that there was a party of two men and two women.
"That must be them," Jeremy said. "I wonder who the second woman is?" Jason said. "Whoever she is, I care more about finding that barber more than anything" I said. "Well we know they were here at least," Jason said. "Let's find out where the hotel is and see if we can't find any more information there" I told them. We had asked a woman where the hotel was and we began our trek there.
Once we arrived I had to admit that it was a rather handsome hotel. We entered and waited for the receptionist. We told them about the group and how one of them was wanted for murder. They explained to us how they had told them about nearby English speaking towns all within weeks of Brake. They then directed us toward the carriages. When we arrived we were told that the owner had left to bring them to one of the towns.
Unfortunately this meant we would have to wait for the owner to return so he could take us to the town they went to directly. It would not be long now. We also learned of a couple of robbers and murderers unrelated to the barber robbing carriage owners and killing them. (Carriage Owners POV.) I could not believe it. I was being robbed by a couple of criminals on my way back to Brake.
They were both ugly men and one of them was holding me at gunpoint. They had stolen all my money, and unhooked my horses. They fired their guns in the air scaring them away. "Now that you have seen my face, you could report me to the authorities, and I for one do not feel like going to prison." "No please, I won't tell the police let me go."
My eyes began to well up with tears. The last thing I had heard was the sound of the gun cocking and the trigger being pulled. (Daniels POV.) We would give the owner a few weeks. If he did not return we would have to try to find the barber and his accomplices ourselves. We will arrest you, you bastard.
(Sweeney's POV.) It had been a month since we moved into that hotel in this town. Johanna was doing amazing work sowing for the seamstress, and sometimes she would make new dresses for herself and Lucy. I was hard at work on the quarry. Despite my thinner stature than my coworkers, I proved I had the strength and endurance to keep up with the bigger men. Lucy sadly still was not stable enough to work a job, or be left alone.
So Anthony was kind enough to stay in the hotel and watch her. Our first goal was to start building our new home. First we needed the money to purchase some available land. Working in the quarry was not as bad as hard labor in Botany Bay because there were actually safety standards here. The men seemed nice but I didn't really trust any of them. It was dangerous to trust many people as far as I was concerned.
Things seemed to be changing in Lucy, she still could not remember me, but she seemed to be reacting differently to me. I would catch her gazing at me sometimes. I remember her staring at me like that the first time we met. Could I get my hopes up, was she falling in love with me again, was this cruel world going to let me have Lucy back romantically. If only she would remember me. She remembered Benjamin's name, but could not remember what he was to her.
So we continued to work and at the end of the month we had bought a small piece of land. Now we needed to work on finally finishing the house. It was getting late and I was finishing up at the quarry. It was another night and I had to work late. In fact I believe everyone was sleeping by now. I hated this, not being able to spend time with my wife and daughter.
(Lucy's POV.) It was a nice day to wake up to. The sun was really bright today, and it was a lovely time for a walk. I made sure my daughter was changed before I removed her from her crib. "Now, now dear, don't make a fuss. We are going to take a walk while daddy works OK.
There were a lot of people out today. Couples enjoying the sun, and the cool wind that often blew. My daughter squirmed as I put her in her tram. "Taking the baby for a walk today?" A plump blonde woman asked me. "Yes, to pass the time while my husband works." "So how is your husband's shaving coming along.?"
"Oh he is such an incredible barber. He has so many customers. All the men love his skills with a blade." I woke up with a start after this. So my husband was a barber, I remember that now. I smiled to myself, happy that I remembered something else.
Note: Next they will be building their house, and I think it will be time to touch bases with Lovett and Robert too. I'll cover how they have been coming along in their lives. So Lucy remembers her husband was a barber, hmm.
