The Sky Is Falling

"Angelica, what are you and the babies doing?" Stu asked in amusement. He and Chas had been bouncing tennis balls on their rackets while they watched the kids, only to stop when they saw the kids keep running inside and grabbing different things. Tommy had been bringing stuffed animals, Chuckie was dragging around blankets, and the twins kept snatching toys. All of which they were putting under the picnic table. Stu had assumed it was some game until Angelica dragged some wood from the side of the house and begun to work on propping it up.

"We're building a fort, Uncle Stu! To protect us if the sky falls!"

Stu chuckled at that. "Well, I suppose that is very important. But you know… I think a play house would be even better."

"But I can't fit in the playhouse. That is for the babies. I-" She stopped as she realized what her Uncle was getting at. "Its done? Its done?" She asked in delight.

"Almost. I wanted your help picking the finishing touches. Want to come down to my workshop and take a look?" Angelica nodded, Chas volunteering to keep watching the kids, and Stu took Angelica's had and led her inside.

Under the table the babies huddled, terrified at the idea of the sky falling. "It's the end of the world!" Chuckie wailed. "The end of the world!"

Tommy placed a hand on his shoulder. "It… it will be okay! I'm sure of it."

"Are you?"

An apple fell on the table and the babies cried out.

"I'm sorry we were mean to you Chuckie!" Lil said.

"Yeah, I wish we'd been nicer to you!"

Chuckie sniffed. "Its… its okay!"

"What matters is that we are here, together!" Tommy said as the four hugged each other close and waited for the world to end.

And when it turned out that Didi was serving them mashed beets for supper it turned out it really was the end of the world.
