(A/N): I don't know what to say. Here's chapter 301.
Leo
My blood turned to ice in my veins, and my heart sank as both Lisbet and I froze at Audrey's inquiry. No. There was no way. Play it cool, Leo. There's no way she actually knows.
"I'm afraid I'm not sure what you're talking about-" She cocked an eyebrow as she cut me off again.
"Yes, you do. My children may not have been old enough to remember what Tarea dedicated himself to, but I don't have that liberty." My mouth snapped shut, knowing that Tarea was, if not currently, at least previously a vampire hunter.
"We're- We're not here to do anything but protect you." She smiled rather sadly.
"If I had thought you were here to harm us, I never would have invited you in. Either of you." She eyed Lisbet, who was pretending- or at least I think she was pretending- to intently study one of the embroidered throw pillows.
"Ms Folley-" The very Elaine look on her face made me correct myself. "Audrey." I sighed. "Yes, Elaine knows what I and my family are. She's my best friend, and she has made it clear to me time and time again that she can be trusted with such a delicate secret." I shot her a pointed look, to which she had the decency to look vaguely chagrined. "My clan are small, but we would like to officially offer you our protection." Now, she looked amused.
"I'm going to guess that the reason you knew my ex husband showed his face here last night is because you have someone watching the house, is that correct?" I fought the urge to glance in the vague direction of where Danniel was hidden outside the house.
"Maybe." She crossed her legs and leaned forward.
"And I'm guessing this isn't a recent development." I swallowed and wished Lisbet would help me, but she had moved on to fussing with the blanket draped over the back of the couch to keep herself distracted.
"No, ma'am." She chuckled at me addressing her that way, but didn't tease me for it, like I knew Lisbet was practically begging to be able to do.
"And I'm guessing the reason you're coming to us now, instead of when the letter first arrived, is because you didn't consider what you would do if he was to show up." I winced.
"That was a miscalculation on my part, yes, but not entirely my fault." She seemed interested in where I was going with this, and accepted the cup from Jay as he brought it to her, before moving to stand behind her chair, one hand on its back, the other on her shoulder. "When Elaine got the letter and I expressed my concerns, she said he wouldn't show up. I insisted on contacting my family just in case, and she agreed- although mostly to get me to stop nagging her about it, I suspect."
"And how do you expect to be able to protect us from him? Its not like you can have someone stationed outside our house at all hours to escort him off the property." Jay scoffed, but I saw the knowing look in Audrey's eye, and knew she understood that not only could I do that, I had been doing it for months.
"That's very simple actually. A friend of mine made these," I pulled the two charms from my pocket and held them up so they can see them. "The base is just a knut attached to a chain, but they're enchanted so that you can get in contact if you need help, and do so discreetly." Even Jay seemed begrudgingly impressed by the concept. "One of my family apparates to you, and helps you deal with your intruder- whether thats to throw him out on his arse, or to mediate a conversation." By the looks on their faces, I could tell it would be the former.
"How do they let you know?" I pulled out my own charm from where it was hanging around my neck, hidden by my clothes.
"Everyone has one- and I'll hand deliver Elaine's to her when I get back to Hogwarts at the end of the holidays." Jay took his hand off his mothers shoulder to cross his arms over his chest, his face hardening, and I immediately felt Lisbet snap back to focus next to me as he became more aggressive.
"Speaking of Elaine-" I held my hands up in surrender, which stopped him dead in puzzlement.
"Elaine told me you weren't keen on me because there was a situation where she was injured, and you thought I was to blame." Audrey stole a glance at her son, and I knew he hadn't mentioned that to her either. Which was good, because at least I knew he could keep a secret for Elaine. "You don't have to believe a word I say, but anyone who has known me for even a second can verify the fact that I would rather cut off one of my limbs than even consider harming Elaine." Jay's expression softened, then hardened, then softened again. He looked like he didn't know whether to be glad that I wouldn't hurt Elaine, or mad that clearly our relationship wasn't quite so black and white if I were willing to do such a thing for her.
"Alright." He practically growled, before moving to flop into the free armchair facing the other end of the couch, and choosing to inspect Lisbet, who had once again returned to what I can only guess was counting the stitches in the couch cover.
"So, Leo. You should tell us who we should expect to show up if we use the charm." Audrey had a good point, and I considered for a second how to describe the members of my clan.
"Well... Besides me and Lisbet, there's Danniel, Jo and Shari. Shari... Shari probably won't be showing up." Audrey looked concerned, so I cleared my throat and continued. "She's going through some stuff right now, emotionally, and she's considering leaving the country in the next few weeks to take a break from everything." Audrey reached forward and before I knew it, she was holding my hand.
"That poor thing! Give her my best, will you?" I nodded dumbly, and briefly met Lisbet's eyes to tell her to keep her mouth shut as she looked like she wanted to tease me mercilessly.
"Of course. Um," I tried my best to ignore her hand holding mine. "Danniel is..." Outside right now. "Danniel's like a brother to me." And I had a lot of experience with those recently. "He's and Jo are young, only a few years older than me, but they're good fighters and some of the bravest people I know." I thought about when Jonothan had showed up with his group, and Danniel and Jo had pushed me behind them to try to protect me. That was the same day my father was killed...
Audrey squeezing my hand made me snap out of my thoughts, and I flushed.
"Sorry. We've been through quite a bit together. They're the people I could call, and no matter what, I know they'd be there for me. And I'd do the same for them." I tried not to think about the fact Danniel could hear all this.
"And Lisbet?" I blinked, and saw Lisbet's head snap up out of the corner of my eye.
"Um... what?" Audrey smiled at her, which was kind of insane to me, given that I knew she knew what Lisbet was.
"He described everyone else, but not you. I'm sure he has something to say about his favorite aunt?" Audrey knew she wasn't my aunt- it wasn't a good lie to begin with, and we certainly hadn't sold it. She was making fun of me, just like Lisbet usually did. I looked at the woman in question.
"Lisbet is a pain in my- behind. She's constantly ribbing me and teasing me about this and that. She doesn't sugar coat things, she tells it like it is, and she keeps me from getting too full of myself. She is my favorite aunt, because she's stepped up for me like no one else ever has, at a point where other people stepped out." I tried to convey to Lisbet how much I meant every word, despite the fact she looked uncomfortable. Ha! Who wasn't good with their words now, Lisbet?
"So...you said we just will these things to alert you, and they will?"
(A/N): Danniel outside: '...brother?! :')'
